What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Wild Kingdom

Today is my birthday and Jen is taking me to Animal Kingdom because Jen is awesome.
(Also because the temperature here finally dropped below 100.)

So naturally, I have to post amazing animal cakes. Begin!

(By Mike's Amazing Cakes)

D'awwww. Look how cute! And now I want a flamingo. I wonder if you can litter box train them...

Prepare yourself for this next one:

(By Simple Wish Cakes)

*sniff*

So beautiful.
[composing self]

Also, look at the way the water in the painting comes out onto the cake board. So impressive.

Turtle time!

(By Wild Flour Cake Co.)

And check out all the different types of coral. Now I want to go snorkeling.

I feel like this next one might be the most majestic animal cake I've ever seen.

(By Highland Bakery)

Seriously. Look at the detailing and textures. Masterful, I tell you.

O.o

(By Gateaux Inc.)

"We're majestic, too..."

Yes. Yes you are.

Jen and I just went to the Georgia Aquarium and spent no less than 2 hours watching the otters frolic. Because frolic is the only word to describe what otters do. And float. They do a lot of floating.

Look! An armadillo!

(By Alliance Bakery)

Funny story. We have a motion sensor on our back porch light and when it turns on, most of the time it's one of these guys. The rest of the time, it's possums. And cats. And possibly ax murderers.

But you know what never wanders through my back yard?

(By Truly Scrumptious Designer Cakes)

Swans. Although, that would be really cool. And I can't even fathom how long it took to place those feathers. Awesome.

And now, an adorable zebra:

(Also by Mike's Amazing Cakes)

You know, sometimes I forget that these are all cakes. Can you believe the structural engineering that went into balancing that cake on one leg. That's why these bakers are the best of the best.

And finally, my favorite animal ever:

(By Avalon Cakes)

Just look at that airbrushing. Perfect.

Thanks for checking out today's Sweets! Happy Sunday!

Happy Birthday, John!!!

The only thing that would make that flamingo cake any better would be a yo-yo. :-)

Happy Birthday to ya from the right pectoral region* of Texas! :-)

I am absolutely floored by the gravity-defying flamingo and zebra (is that Marty from the Madagascar movies???) cakes. I wish there were links to how they were constructed!

*(It's not quite the "heart" of Texas, just a smidge to the West of it...so...)

Happy Birthday, John! May you have more fun than a bathtub full of otters!

November 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJammies

A group of otters is called a "romp". Fitting isn't it?

Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday dear John
If you ever come visit

For some reason, we have a large number of swans around here.
Enjoy the aminals!

Happy Birthday, John! We appreciate all you do to keep this little cake blog going!
Have fun at Animal Kingdom. I have never been to Florida, but when I do get there, AK will be my first stop!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, John! I'll bet you don't look a day over whatever you're telling everyone you are! Anyway, age doesn't matter unless you're wine or cheese. I too love tigers. I was born in the Chinese-astrological "year of the tiger" (for whatever that stuff is worth). Hope you two do some REALLY fun stuff today!! Show us pictures if Jen gets you a birthday wreck! =^~.~^=

Happy Birthday! It's mine too! I'm not doing anything quite so exciting, lol. Woo hoo laundry!

November 2, 2014 | Unregistered Commentertjbmurph

Happy birthday, john. It's my birthday too. I happened to go over to Google to search for something today and discovered that the Google doodle is cakes. On your birthday they give you a special Google doodle and if you hover over the cakes it is a personalized birthday greeting.

Happy Birthday John! Hope you enjoyed your day at AK. It's the perfect day for it.

November 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterClaire T

Happy Birthday John! Have fun at AK!

Also - you don't want a swan in your back yard, they are loud and mean and leave a lot of green slimey poo everywhere. (thought you needed to know that)

November 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterGaylin

Happy Birthday John! I wonder if that armadillo cake happens to be red velvet?

November 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKatherine

The flamingo cake--how is that even cake? How would one even begin to cut that thing, but why would you want to?

Okay, I am officially old when I see the otter cake and think "Cialis ad"! I hope you are not old as me, John, but you'll get there!

Swans are the Mean Girls of the animal world--pretty to look at, but mean as heck! You're not missing anything by not having them around.

November 2, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterpikkewyntjie

Happy Birthday, John

Don't get a flamingo as a pet. Evn if litter box training is possible, the shrimp budget would kill you. It's all they eat other than algae.

An otter, on the other hand, would be a lovely pet. Maybe they have a spare one at AK.

Enjoy your day.

November 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJane

If you truly love tigers and live anywhere near Florida, you should check out Dade City's Wild Things. You get to "frolic" with actual tiger cubs. That's a birthday gift, right there.

I hope your birthday is crack-a-lackin'!

Hope you have an amazing birthday, John, THOJ--you deserve it.

I'm with @Jess . . . I wouldn't want to eat these cakes.
OK, I might lick them a little bit . . .

How DID the baker make the zebra stand on one leg??

November 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterFM

Happy birthday, John! Enjoy the animals! I've enjoyed these ones!

P.S. The temperature is *under* 100? Where I live, it's snowing. :( Be glad you're not here.

Hoping your birthday is even more spectacular than all these cakes! Thanks for being born. we are so glad you're alive (and taking care of Jen, just read all about the Halloween lab trip)

Happy Birthday, John.. Hope you and Jen had fun at AK. Thanks for sharing at least part of your day with us. Love the animal cakes. The artistry here is AMAZING. Have no idea how anyone can make a cake that balances like that flamingo or that sweet zebra, but the realism on the gorilla, rhino and tiger are breathtaking.

Speaking of cool animal experiences. If you ever have the opportunity, The San Diego Safari Zoo in Escondido (about 40 miles north of San Diego) offers several difference Safari experiences where you can interact with some of the African animals. I had the chance to feed giraffes and even rhinos on the two hour Safari trip. It was awesome. And at the San Diego Sea World there were opportunities to go behind the scenes and interact with Arctic animals like Beluga whales, walruses, and arctic foxes. Even got to feed a baby beluga whale. I did both of these on vacation to San Diego...

November 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAddie

I would not be able to cut any of these cakes. I would need a set up cupcakes to give out if anyone really wanted to eat cake.

November 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterStephanie

Happy Birthday, John!! Enjoy DAK!!! I luv it so much there!! It makes the cut when I go down next week for a grand total of 60 hrs in the state of Florida!!

Did u know Lakeland has an entire lake filled with swans, both white and black! (But not the scary ballet black swan type, tho they can chase you if provoked!!!) It's true, and the legend says they were given to the city by the queen of England. I only lived there when I was in school, so you know how legends grow on a college campus!!

Plus, if you live the tigers, you need, NEED to be following BigCatDerek on vine, YouTube, instagram, etc. He lives at a big cat rescue in Texas and films the kitties everyday!!! They've even got some lion cubs right now that are so adorable!!!!

So, yeah, those cakes are pretty awesome & happy birthday, John!!

Hi Jon,

Beautiful cakes, great post, but just a little, itty-bitty typo...American marsupials are called opossums, not possums (possums are Australian). Thought you'd like to know.
