What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

The Far Side of Cake, Vol. 3

  Of course, the irony of Phil's phobia was never completely lost on him.

"The inspector listened to the woman's tale with suspicion. Sure, the dame SEEMED to be telling the truth about her husband's death, but he still suspected fowl play."

Thanks to Erin W., Lisa H., & Kimberly P. for allowing my inner Gary Larson to come out and play.

P.S. It's been a few years since I've done these, but here's what I consider Volume 1 and Volume 2.

One look at that second cake, and all I can hear is "Mah-na-mah-na."

Sung to "Mary Had a Little Lamb"

Gary had a little cake, little cake, little cake
Gary had a little cake
Spider arachnophobe

And everywhere that Gary went, Gary went, Gary went
Everywhere that Gary went
Blow creatures eyes would roll

His fowl was acting cruel one day, cruel one day, cruel one day
His fowl was acting cruel one day
And broke the murder rule

Jen made the readers laugh and say, laugh and say, laugh and say
Jen made the readers laugh and say
On Thursday, Far Side Rules!"

It's official. Jen is trying to kill me...

I can't remember if I've mentioned it here on CW before, but my dad was a huge fan of "The Far Side" when I was growing up, and some of that fondness rubbed onto me. I can only say: Well done! :)

Those are great!!

My younger twin (actually both of them, now that I think about it) are terrified of the regular brown house spiders. They'd die of sheer terror should I bring home poor Phil there. Has anyone ever SEEN a yellow-and-green spider? Surely he's more dangerous than the ordinary black one at his side. After all, in nature bright colors usually mean poison, yes?

September 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

My awesome boss has Far Side books in the lobby. I know what I'm doing today!

September 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

Absolutely brilliant -- you've captured Larson perfectly! (And, your other two volumes are just as brilliant.) No funny remarks from me today, 'cause, as MC Hammer said, "U can't touch this...."

CSI Far Side: "I guess this gingerbread man is ..... pushing up daisies!"

September 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterGingerSnap

Hee GingerSnap!

I am most disturbed by the trail of green and yellow...goo...left by that first spider. Genius!

1: Awww, "Phil" is CUTE! And I don't think he's afraid at all--he's SMILING at his little buggy-buddy! ("Say 'Hello' to my little friend!"...heh heh..)
2: "All fun & Games", huh? Yes, yes, I can see the "fun" part! they ARE sort of like a Mr.Potato Head (Hey, mel--*wink*) in that one gets to pick and choose what eyes to use...if any. e.e
3: Oh, the indignity of it all. First, the poor GB man is suffocated by a Peep; then, to add insult to injury, they have to go and smack a posy on the privates??
(Gotta say, though, G-man: You wear it well!)
=^~.-^=

September 12, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

I thought the third one was cute and didn't really see anything wrong with it . . . then I noticed the duck is sitting on the gingerbread man's face . . .

September 12, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterblissteach

I cannot handle the "All Fun and Games" Dept.... I will find a way to use this. I MUST!

September 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLindsey

I love Gary Larson, and own several of his books. For a long time, I was the only fan that I knew. Glad there's more of us out there :)

@ Sharyn: Well done with the song! Glad you were able to foil Jen's plan ;)

September 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEmily

@Jodee: Is your last name by any chance 'Flynn'?

September 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

@GingerSnap for the win!

I really want to know how the wreckorator thought that was even supposed to work and not be obscene O.O

September 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

That second picture gave me flashbacks to Galaxy Quest's Pig-Lizard Transporter scene...

"Did I just hear that the animal turned inside out, and then it EXPLODED?"

P.S. If you haven't seen the movie. Stop whatever you are doing and go watch it. NOW.... OK, after you finish reading here.

@Swampgirl Inez: Can you form a rudimentary lathe?

September 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

@SaraCVT ~ Nope. Should I be worried?

September 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

Why is that a thing? We have seen too many of these things for it not to be on purpose. Why? WHY? Hint to Wreckerator: it IS legal to make gingerbread in other shapes. Really. At least put that duck on a gingerbread house for crying out loud! Now I've got this whole crazy scenario in my head that ends with the duck tearfully whispering to the police detective that she thought old G.B. knew morse code...

September 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJust Andrea

@Swampgirl: "Maybe you're the plucky comic relief. Did you ever think about that?"
One of my favorite movies, EVAH!!

@Sharyn - Once again, you are triumphant!!

@Jen - You move me.

@Sharyn ("It's official. Jen is trying to kill me..."):
Aw, don't be silly,Silly! She probably sees you as a sort of "goose that laid the golden egg"(s) and wants to get some mileage outta ya before the well runs dry--(yikes--talk about your "mixed metaphors"!) Haha! Anyhoo-you know what I mean!! (Now, can you explain that to me?? I have no idea what I'm talking about, and I'm giggling too hard to care!) =^~.~^=
Anyway, here: I'll be a "cheerleader" : Sharyn! Sharyn! She's the onel! If she can't do it, it won't be fun... (??)...she'd better run? ..she'll come undone?
(Ah-I've got it: We need a pun! Mel !!)

@SaraCVT
possibly not universally-- Brown Recluses are brown (hence the name...), Black Widows-- well they have one bright spot, but those huge multi-colored striped garden spiders are pussy cats

For whatever reason, we have four MONSTER spiders that have weaved webs all around our house, including one outside the living room window that we torment by tapping on the window and making it flail its legs everywhere!!LOL giggle snort.....if they all looked like Phil I wouldn't mind them so much but these are UGLY spiders!!!! Besides, wouldn't it be really really fun to smash Phil.....?

September 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterWildDuck

The third one is kinda cute except for the duck sitting on the poor gingerbread or possible teddy bear's face. And it seems like the flower stem might be stabbing it in the eyes. Of course we can't tell if it has eyes with the duck in the way. The first cake kinda creeps me out. It looks like it is trying to escape.

September 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara

What is this "Far Side" and why can't I find it in my comic section?

September 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAIsha

Spiders (which I'm mostly afraid of now thanks to @Haiku Joy) are seriously crazy in my neck of the woods right now. The general consensus around here is that I have a spider bite on my hand. It must have happened in my sleep because I can promise you it wouldn't have been touching me long enough to bite me had I been awake! The first person to tell me how many spiders the average person ingests in their sleep will be turned over to Theardare and his special room!

Anyway, the point of this is that Phil isn't so bad. Except for his size.

@sending ~ Your Sharyn cheer reminded me of Mike Myers as Cat in the Hat o.O

September 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

@SaraCVT AND DBC:
THANKS whole huge bunches, you meanies! I'm terrified of spiders. (And it's not because they can hurt/poison/or even kill you. For me, it's because that they just plain CREEP me OUT.) Maybe it's the way they MOVE--or something. I can't explain it, because it's completely irrational. (And it's not a stereotypical "girl thing" either, because I think scorpions are kind of awesome, and I LOVE snakes!) Oh, well--to each her own! =^o.0^=

The second cake looks like the Martians from Sesame Street.

September 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterIsolder74

September 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymoose

@ Isolder74: Do you mean the YipYips? (I had to YouTube "Martians Sesame St. & got them.) Yeah, they kind of do look similar. But at least these ones are QUIET. Those YipYips...yikes. I watched only a brief clip, and was just about ready to open a vein. Ay caramba...! =^>.<^=

September 12, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

I love the Far Side! I've got a slightly twisted sense of humour and some old Gary Larson books in the closet. But the second photo... What are those???

September 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDiana

@ ALL the awesome Galaxy Quest fans:
"It's a ROCK! It doesn't have any vulnerable spots!"

LOVELOVELOVE that movie!

And regarding Wreck #2 - I thought it looked suspiciously like QBert: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_kvy3e9Wmb11qzeetoo1_400.png

September 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterGrace

@ Sendingtheclowns:

Those are the ones. Old classic Sesame Street didn't always mean normal. The only time they were quiet was when they were looking at their book.

I've heard them called YepYeps too.

September 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterIsolder74

I'm blaming it on being tired but I couldn't figure out the first one for the longest time. :D
It looks like he saw the mini-him and slid as far over in the carton as he could go!

The third one is just obscene. Flower crotch or duck ass face? Neither is appealing.

Maybe I need to watch this Galaxy Quest...

September 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

@ Jodee:("Mike Myers as Cat in the Hat") ...yeeaahhhHhhhNO. I just checked that out, and I think that's just about the creepiest thing I've seen in...well....EVER? Who thought THAT was a good idea? Psychiatrists who are counting on the money from years and years of ongoing therapy for traumatized children?! I hope that thing was rated "R" (for Repulsive)! =^Q.Q^=

September 13, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

@sending: I am truly sorry. No harm was meant; I surely didn't mean to be a "meanie". Look at it this way: Do you like flies? No? Then spiders are your buds. The vast majority of spiders you meet (and I've met a lot, big and small) are completely harmless, more terrified of you, the mind-numbing giant than you are of them. When I was seven or so, I even made a pet of one who lived on my ceiling. He/she (probably she) was a pretty little thing, with a yellow zig-zag on her brown abdomen. Zip never once hurt me or even frightened me, particularly. Just catch your spiders in a glass or jar and let them outside. They're usually happier out there, anyway.

September 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

Kudos to Jen for getting it just right, and thanks for the reminder links to the earlier editions. I miss The Far Side: for instance, "Bummer of a Birthmark, Hal."

Also, @sendingtheclowns may want to skip this but... @SaraCVT, my favorite spider (which I've only seen in photos) is the Hawaiian Happy Face Spider, which is small, non-poisonous, and quite colorful, often sporting yellow & red markings.

Sounds like maybe I need to watch Galaxy Quest too.

September 13, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterhyphen8

Shame on the Terry Pratchett fans!
The proper response to the gingerbread man is : what duck?

September 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMudmusher

@hyphen8:
Okay, I caved-- I HAD to look! I'm perverse that way...and, guess what? I think that spider is pretty darn amazing, and fascinating!! Maybe even "cute"...(that's my final offer!). But,hey-it's more than I would've expected from me! Thanks, sort of...=^~.-^= {I'm not easy, but I can be had...}

September 13, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

@SaraCVT:
Oh, my goodness--I was only kidding when I called you a meany!! I have a thick skin & I can take it on the chin!
Don't give it another thought, please!! =^~.~^=
And @hyphen8: I didn't "skip" it, I LOOKED at it! (I'm a perverse bird, uh-huh!) I thought it was actually quite...er, charming! Yeah-that's it... No-SERIOUSLY, that is one *happy* arachnid....fascinating. You may just make me a convert.......baby steps, though. Baby steps. =^-.-^=
