What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Here There Be MONSTERS

It has come to my attention that many people are afraid of monsters.

By CakeCentral Member Tompouse

 But why?

No, really.

Why?

Monsters aren't scary -- they're adorable! In fact, I think you'll agree the monsters you're about to meet aren't terrifying at all; they're just a bunch of cream puffs.

(OK, technically none of them are cream puffs -- but they are baked goods. Close enough.)

Let's look at the facts:

This is a One-Eyed, One-Horned, Flying Purple People Eater.

By pt4pastries

 (Check out her wings!)

Now, a One-Eyed, One-Horned, Flying Purple People Eater only eats purple people. It says so right in her name!

Are you purple?

I rest my case.

Then there's the Loch Ness Monster:

Do you know how many people are killed by Scottish lake monsters every year?

Zero.

Do you know how many people are killed by deer every year?

About 130.

So, tell me again why monsters are scary? It's Bambi who's the psycho.

"Hang on, what about Cthulhu, the dread horror that lies dreaming in R'lyeh?" you ask.

(Which is kind of silly, because I can't hear you. Still, fair point.)

What, you mean this Cthulhu?

By Geek Sweets

How can you call him anything but sweet? And maybe a little chewy.

B.O.B. from Monsters vs. Aliens isn't frightening, either.

By Yummy in the Tummy Cakes

In fact, as a chemically-altered tomato, he's probably a great source of lycopene.

(Not that that's relevant -- but it is good for your eye. Er, eyes.)

I've always thought if Cthulhu and B.O.B. ever got together, their kids would look something like this:

Let's call him Seymour, because of the third eye.
(I told you all that lycopene would come in handy...)

Even this guy isn't really scary:

C'mon, haven't you ever played with boats in the tub?

Think about it: If monsters are so bad, why do kids like the Wild Things so much?

And if a two-year-old can figure out these monsters are her friends before you can say "Boo"...

By The Royal Bakery

... then how hard can it be?

Look at Brobee here. He's just a four-year old drummer who lives in the woods:

By CW reader Yanira Raabe

He's not even remotely dangerous - unless maybe you hug him. (That green frosting can stain.)

And while I'll admit I don't know the first thing about Moshi Monsters,

By Little Cherry Cake Company

I think a sweet-tempered, fiercely loyal ninja cat like Katsuma would be a good monster to have living under your bed.

So the next time you walk into a room and find a monster ...

By McGreevy Cakes

... maybe try asking him out for ice cream instead of running away screaming.

(Hey, my motto's always been, "When in doubt, scoop, don't shout.")

Now, can we agree monsters aren't scary?

By Seahorse Sweets

Well, unless maybe you're a cookie.

:D

Monsters inc cake is so perfect in it's detail, and the bob/cthulu cake is actually very cute. :D The first one just makes me smile :)

Why doesn't Derek get to have a happy birthday B.O.B.? Who's this usurper Anna??

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRobynR

As Voltaire (the goth musician, not the author) points out, "the monsters are real but they're not in your dreams/learn what you can from the beasts you defeat/you'll need it for some of the people you meet." These are absolutely not scary monsters!

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCaroline

Aw! Those aren't vewy scawy monster at all! Love the cookie monster one. nom nom nom me want coooookies! nom nom nom nom

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMary

I love the Cthulhu cookie!

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEileen

What's the story behind the B.O.B. from Monsters vs. Aliens cake that says "Happy Birthday Derek (crossed out) Ava!"?

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterdutchgirl

Awww! I LOVE that little red octopus! ADORable!? And look at his EYE: he just LOVES his little boatie friend...((hug)) ("Awww!" again)
No WAY I could cut that. If it were my cake, that octopus would live in the freezer like a wedding cake topper.
=^~.~^=

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

? Just curious~~Could that "Derek-crossed-out-and-changed-to-AVA" cake have been made for a transgendered individual, you think?

=^??^=

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

LOL. I see Randall sneaking in the door on the Monsters Inc cake.

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDis Fan

Only the most adorable post in like...ever! Thank you!

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnne

A cake topped with a HUGE pile of chocolate chip cookies??? BEST IDEA EVER!! And the CoOkie Monster is the cutest!

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCanadian K

Will you just look at the "fur" on the bottom layer of Boo's cake? How did they do that? Seriously, how did they do that?

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPatti

Wow. I haven't even THOUGHT of the Purple People-Eater "song" since I was in...like, maybe the 3rd grade. Which was a little more than half a century ago. And now, I will hear it in my head for a week.
Thanks a big one, guys....

Those cakes are just wonderful. And all those cute little details, like the horns coming out of the tiers of the Monsters Inc cake or the purple people eater's spine. I never thought that I would ever want a monster cake but now I would like all of them :-)

And I would really like to know the story behind the cake for Derek/Ava, too.

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMiA

I want to hear more about the killer deer.

[They likely had good reasons....people being, well, people.]

=^-.-^=

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

I LOVE the Monsters Inc cake - one of my absolute favorite movies of all times! I want it for my next birthday :-)

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterbmbagain803

I just noticed the little brown blobs on the first one and realized that they're adorable little hedgehogs! Sweet!! =^~.~^=

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

The only thing scary about this post is the earworm!

*singing* He was a one-eyed, one-horned, flying....*

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJammies

Concerning the crossed out Derek in the B.O.B. cake I think it's referencing a joke from the movie. B.O.B. became fixated on Susan's ex and started inserting him in conversation or referring to him even though he never met the guy. So it elevates the cake even more!

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKatja

I agree - I must know the story behind the Derek/Ava issue. Details!! We need DETAILS!!

My guess: they were expecting a boy but got a little pink surprise instead. :)

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterabudoggie

Since these are sweets, we must assume the crossed-out Derek and bad grammar "Wylan is a wild thing TWO" are actually correct? (By the way, do not search Wild Thing 2. It isn't a children's film).

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMeghan

Some of the monsters on the first cake look like they might be more colorful distant cousins to Unown.

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNyperold

I love the flying purple people eater.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DL1ZH0Ke92A

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJane

@Meghan: I think the "two" is referring to the fact that the cake is for Wylan's second birthday. Derek/Ava, I have no idea.

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEileen

Meghan; "Wylan is a wild thing TWO" says to me that Wylan is turning two years old! Thus, it's a clever and actually grammatically correct play on words. Nicely done!

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterChenaya

Cookie Monster, chocolate chip cookies, cake...brilliant!

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLizW

I was so hoping for an "Aaahh!!! Real Monsters" cake. Looks like there are a couple of those out there on the interwebs.

Or am I the only one who remembers that show?

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRoy

I Think Katja Solved The Mystery! Thank You! I Was So Confused.
Love These Cakes!

The Cookie Monster a day after an article on Cracked about really disturbing fanfics... *twitchtwitch*

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJen

I said "Mr Purple People Eater, what's your line?"
He said "Eating purple people, and it sure is fine. But that's not the reason that I came to land. I wanna be a star in a rock 'n roll band!"

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTana

The "Derek/Ava" thing is because in the movie, B.O.B. keeps talking like he is Susan (the really tall girl) & her husband's name is Derek. He says "Derek, we are over. I have found someone new. ..." It makes perfect sense if you have seen the movie!

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

As a mother of a mother, I go by the moniker Grandmonster; so named for the growling chase games in the hallway. My grands will love monsters and the associated cakes!!

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

Wow, have this many people not seen Monsters vs Aliens?? As Katja mentioned, B.O.B. became a little fixed on Derek. Well more on the Derek story, and often became confused by things. Which is understandable, because he doesn't really have a brain. So sometimes he would think that thing that happened to other people happened to him, and he would also get people's names confused sometimes. So it makes TOTAL sense that B.O.B. would get confused and put Derek instead of the birthday girl's name.

RICER. It's called a ricer--for the shreddy-looking things. My stinkin computer's acting up so I don't know if this will show up once , more than once, or not at all. I feel like getting drunk, but I don't drink.
Arrivederci , bebe =^-.-^=

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

I wonder what the EPCOT threat assessment will be for this one.

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAyla

@Patti. I believe you could use a grass tip for the fur! These are adorable cakes! I wish I liked fondant better!

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterFlorellis designs

when i was very little (about 4-5 yrs old, the flying purple eater song was very popular. I only remember this because I had gotten stung above the eye by a bumble bee and my eye was seriously swollen and black and blue and older boy cousins all sang that song to me every time they saw me.

Never in my wildest dream did I imagine someone would come up with a cake that embodied whatever it was that that song was supposed to be about... I LOVE that cake. Brought back a whole stream of childhood memories (and that was A LONG TIME AGO).

Of course all the other monster cakes are AMAZING too, but the purple people just spoke to me this afternoon...

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAddie

Oh, and can somebody PLEASE stand the whole "Cookie-Monster-On-Pile" upright? (Or make him step away from the cookies?) I can see that the height of the photo could cause a possible space/cropping issue or some such thing, but his Leaning~Tower~of~Pisa act is making me feel tipsy, and seems to be REALLY doing a number on ole' Cookie! ~^@.@^~

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

I love the Cookie Monster one and I'm going to try and copy it!

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPierrette Carriere

"...So next time you see a monster, do not scream and shout!
This sort of situation is not cause for freaking out!
Simply smile at him, and ask, 'how do you do?'
'Cause that monster in the mirror, he just might be YOU!"

Yup, thanks to this post, I have entirely different song in my head now^-^.
These cakes are adorable (I totally want the Monsters, Inc one), and I'm sure monsters everywhere appreciate your PSA on their behalf.

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterStevie Lou

While I don't usually like other baked goods being stuck on top of cakes, little Ian is going to talk about that last one for years. "I had a cake--an' it had Cookie Monster--an'--an'--it had cookies on top! Chocolate chip cookies!"

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJenny Islander

I love the lycopene jokes. And I didn't even know there was such a thing as lycopene jokes until today!

June 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

OMG NESSIE CAKE! I was obsessed with Nessie as a kid, and still sorta am to this day; back in '99, the first thing I ever entered into the search engine of my then-new computer was "Loch Ness Monster".

We were *this close* to having my Vulcan promise in our wedding vows to protect me from monsters, but then we decided it was kind of a weird promise to make to a Klingon woman; monsters should fear ME. So it remains as it has always been; a private and most excellent promise. (But when he forgets to lock the door, I yell at him, "OI! I thought you were supposed to PROTECT me from monsters, not leave me open to attack, you berk!")

Your Pal,

Storm

That four-tier cake from Royal Bakery has got to be the best thing I've ever seen on Sunday Sweets. Seriously! That bottom tier--I love the blue shag!!

On another note....B.O.B. really gives new meaning to "one-eyed monster." **looks around smiling sheepishly**

June 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAngie

The Sendak one is really timely, because his 85th birthday is today (Monday). LOVE it!
