Sunday Sweets: Drama Queens

In a world ...
where it seemed ...
that most cakes were chewed first and THEN sold ...
one cake dared ...
to stand alone.
Made by Sylvia Weinstock Cakes for Jennifer Lopez's birthday
This summer ...
Sunday Sweets presents ...
the story of an elite group of renegade cakes ...
By Confectioneiress Cupcakes and Sweets
...who could no longer bear to stand idly by and watch the unknowing public be content with things like CUPCAKE CAKES, or NAKED CAKES, and instead decided to show the world, once and for all ...
What a freaking amazing cake really looks like.
With an all-star cast led by Tiersten Dunst, Garnish Paltrow, and Jane Fondant, with a special appearance by Posh Spice,
it's ...
By Anna Elizabeth Cakes, as featured in Wedluxe magazine
DRAMATICAKES.
Prepare to be amazed,
enthralled,
flabbergasted...
and hungry.
Hold on to your seats, as this visual thrill-ride takes you beyond the average world of poorly-piped productions, and into a snowy scene where silvery footprints lead you through a filigree-framed trompe l'oeil forest:
Where larger-than-life seahorses actually *gasp* look like seahorses.
Where you'll find yourself asking in disbelief more than once ...
'Are those real?'
(I'm talking about the flowers, of course).
See why critics are raving:
"Two enthusiastic forks up!"
"I was on the edge of my plate!"
"The taste good movie of the year!"
DRAMATICAKES.
Coming soon ...
To a bakery near you.
(If you're lucky).

Wow.
These are wonderful! And nice job featuring two from Cake Opera up here in Toronto. I can spot their work on site. The very definition of dramatic!
I can't even fathom having to eat these magnificent works of art. At first I was like "the fourth one is my favorite. That is the coolest thing," and then I scrolled down and I kept saying, "nope, that ones my favorite! no, that one! I LOVE THEM ALL."
Absolutely spectacular - the pink one took my breath away. And if the yellow one is lemon, I may as well die now because I'll never be more satiated in my life. Wow. Just....wow.
Simply unbelievable-especially the tulips and roses! How can they BEAR to cut into them? I'd have to be blindfolded, and even then, I'd almost feel like I was "killing" something! Magnificent.
=^0.0^=
Good grief...I just went back through more carefully, and started to follow the footsteps into the trompe l'oeil forest... It is unreal. I could almost hear the crunch of the snow under my feet. What art! I'm in awe!!!
=^u.u^=
The "trope l'oeil forest" is actually a copy of an art page in The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe. (read the books, they're awesome!) It's amazing to see it on cake!
OMG those are fabulous cakes-sooo beautiful :D
WOWSERS! Truly terrific and amazing.
Want. Want them all.
You took our breath away.
Rated G. For Gorgeous.
Beautiful.
Did anyone else hear the movie announcer guy's voice in their head as they read this post? :D
And once again all is right with the world!!
Un.Believe.Able! Stunning (squared)! And a great narrative! Well done, Lindsey!!
as usual, the sunday sweets do not fail to deliver -- all are fantastic and show a great deal of skill and, shall we say it, artistry. but the one with the trompe l'oiel from opera cake co is particulary amazing. one small miscalculation and those trees go from looking tall and gorgeous to broken and misshapen! congrats to all the bakers and thanks as always for sharing.
Search site: brown roses
Here, today, brown roses on a cake featured in SS. I knew they could be used to good effect!
I love how the vine on the forest cake seems to be sprouting little snowballs!
And, I don't think I could help myself-- if I were anywhere near that adorable seahorse, I'd want to grab him and run home with him and give him his own room! I'd even give him a name: "SeabiscART" !
=^~.~^=
Just amazing, as usual... HOWEVER:
Not sure if it's an adquired reflex, á la Pavlov dogs, but whenever I hear/read JLo all I think about whatevee I see is "have you ever the expression heard less is more? ·Ever heard of simply elegant as opposed to overly ornate meaning expensively cheap in a drug cartel boss style?" Ok ,maybe it's just me...
And fell in love with the 3rd one though (see the less is more rant)
The only time the "less is more rule" does NOT apply is when chocolate in any form is involved (see 5th cake, which would do with less flowers for me, just to be picky).
Right there with you, Bev...definitely movie announcer style & not Pan-Wow infomercial... :-) The detail, the craftsman(or woman) -ship, the lifelike-ness...
Best. Sunday. Sweets. Ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-)
Ha - amazing as usual. I read 'coming soon to a bakery near you' and instantly said, "If you're lucky."
Scrolled down, aaaand, yep. It's clear I've been addicted to this site for more than 5 years! :) I remember reading one post and laughing so hard that I thought I was going into premature labor. That little girl is almost 5 now, so...yeah. Good Luck in China!!!
I have a strong desire to rip off one of the tulips from the 8th cake and nom on them......if they're actually frosting.
I like eating my leafy greens, but not in that way...
Edible marcasite!? Unbelievable. This is just jaw-dropping, dramatically gorgeous! =^0.0^=
So did anybody else look at that trompe l'oeil forest and immediately searched for a lamp-post?
I love the yellow cake, number 9 down. Such a simple idea, some swirls through color, but it's beautiful!
I shudder to think of what some of our local bakers would do to these cakes. They are all simply lovely; I might get married all over again (to the same fellow) if we could have Torte di Nadia cake.
Yay, the spirit of Don LaFontaine lives on!
To SaraCVT: Yes, I did! Did anyone besides me notice the initials S and L on that same cake? it must be the bride and groom's first initials. These cakes are all beautiful. I couldn't pick just one!
I really like #9. Simple, elegant, beautifully executed. That Is a cake I can picture actually eating, rather than the ones that look like fondant encrusted sculptures. (Sorry, number one.)
@SaraCVT--me too! Looks like Spare Oom to me!
I,too, shudder to think of the wreckage that will be inspired by those last two. Clearly greatness takes more than just a clever idea. The craftsmanship takes them from drab to fab.
@SaraCVT - Yes!
@M - "If less is more, think how much more more would be!"
Just wanted to give credit where credit is due - the 1st cake after the Sylvia Weinstock cake was made by a local bakery outside of Indianapolis called Confectioneiress Cupcakes and Sweets in Zionsville, IN. My cousin had them make her wedding cake which was amazing in decoration and taste and we regularly buy their cupcakes. They also make some of the best macaroons I've ever put in my mouth. If my husband and I ever renew our vows, Confectioneiress is as the top of the list for our cake!
[Editor's note- Hi Liene! Thanks so much for clearing that up. We only had her Cake Central name so we linked to that but I just changed it to her site. Thanks again. -john (thoJ)]
I cannot wait to see the wrecks that emerge from these gorgeous examples!!!
Wow...scrolling down... sslloowwllyy...the eyes taking in these creations...like being in an art gallery...strolling past the masterpieces...virtual visual velvet... and then-- !BAM!.
Suddenly you're at the end, and the "MORE! MORE! MORE!" section, with the spectacularly horrendous "works" of wreckage (scary-looking clown-headed thing, a dead pig, and who knows what else, because the images change). Talk about an exercise in contrasts, from the ridiculous to the sublime! Starts AND ends with Wow.
=^~.~^=
Holy cake-oli! Those are just stunning! I'm also guessing every single one of them would cost so much I'd have to re-finance the house! Like it says though, a girl can dream!
The big blue cabbage rose (?) is amazing and the one by WedLuxe... OMG! I just want to stare at it in person. And someone please please please tell me the yellow is lemon or pineapple flavored!
I'm afraid two or three reminded me of elaborate toilet paper covers. Splendidly executed, but a little tacky. But there are the others. I love the simplicity of the swirly yellow cake and immediately tasted the tartness of lemon. I also am very taken by the chocolate roses and ruffles in loose tiers with gorgeous flowers growing in the cracks. What lovely flowers and what a cool concept. And the footprints, of course, are glorious in every detail.
I'd love it if you would do some Game of Thrones cakes for Sunday Sweets sometime...
Oh, I do SEW verymuch think that the brown cake would make an EVER-so-STUNningly lovely hat for Her Majesty the Queeen....I can JUST picture her sporting it with her yewsual panache...Cawn't yew, now?
=^u.u^=
A bakery named Cake Opera Co. has to be amazing ... and it apparently is, based on the beauties showcased here.
@M: Ahhh...I think I get what you're saying: you mean something like Connie's wedding cake hideosity in The Godfather...the cake that rode in to the wedding like Cleopatra coming down the Nile in a barge. Like that, right? =^~.-^=
@ zoomom, Well if less is more, more is obviously less. Like less elegant, less tasteful, less ... insert any adjective of your choice which conveys the idea of "complete opposite to vulgar", "complete opposite to tacky"... or, according to me, "complete opposite to anything JLo (or any Miss Venezuela) stands for".
I can't stress enough this does NOT apply to amounts of chocolate, though. If Wallis Simpson once said "you can't bee to thin or too rich", I say "you can't have too much chocolate on anything".
Hi, Lindsey! (waves cheerily) For some reason it feels like I haven't seen your name in awhile. Could be the heat...
I can't decide between the chocolate cake with the pleats or the swirled white and yellow number that looks like summer sunshine through home made lemonade in a handblown glass pitcher. ;)
@ deb:
Two words: Pina Colada.
Yeah? Yeah?
(I really have no idea, but it sounds good to me!)
MMMMmmmmm!!!!! =^~.~^=
That yellow ombre one is amazing. It actually looks like you could eat it.
Trompe l'oeil forest cake is now my top favorite of all time. Breathtakingly lovely artwork. Never eat it!
@Barbara Anne: "summer sunshine through home made lemonade in a handblown glass pitcher"
~~Oh, that just sounds so refreshing!!! I want the pitcher to be a very pale, cool shade of green, and set halfway between the sun and the shade....ahhhhh!! =^u.u^=
@Teal ("That yellow ombre one is amazing. It actually looks like you could eat it.")
~~~~~
And that should be considered a high compliment around these parts! But seriously-you're right!! Too many of the heavily-fondanted (if that's even a legit word, which I doubt it is) ones look as if they'd taste about as yummy as tire casing. Personally, I'm not a fan of coating cake with something that can be peeled off like a skin. It just seems too...durable. =^e.e^=
Can someone explain to me the anatomy of a cake like the seahorse? What's inside past the fondant? Is it even a cake?
@ sendingtheclowns Will I be allowed to post here again if I admit I just don't remember that cake in The Godfather? I've seen the whole trilogy, and absolutely love it (well, at least the 2 first films) I promise I have, just not recently, I mean in recent years, or decade...
But yes, what you describe sounds just like what I mean, maybe my memory deliberately repressed that image.
