What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Drama Queens

In a world ...

where it seemed ...

that most cakes were chewed first and THEN sold ...

one cake dared ...

to stand alone.

Made by Sylvia Weinstock Cakes for Jennifer Lopez's birthday

This summer ...
Sunday Sweets presents ...
the story of an elite group of renegade cakes ...

By Confectioneiress Cupcakes and Sweets

...who could no longer bear to stand idly by and watch the unknowing public be content with things like CUPCAKE CAKES, or NAKED CAKES, and instead decided to show the world, once and for all ...

What a freaking amazing cake really looks like.

By Tickled Cakes

With an all-star cast led by Tiersten Dunst, Garnish Paltrow, and Jane Fondant, with a special appearance by Posh Spice,
it's ...

DRAMATICAKES.

Prepare to be amazed,
enthralled,
flabbergasted...

and hungry.

By Ivory Cake Company

Hold on to your seats, as this visual thrill-ride takes you beyond the average world of poorly-piped productions, and into a snowy scene where silvery footprints lead you through a filigree-framed trompe l'oeil forest:

Where larger-than-life seahorses actually *gasp* look like seahorses.

Where you'll find yourself asking in disbelief more than once ...
'Are those real?'

(I'm talking about the flowers, of course).

See why critics are raving:

"Two enthusiastic forks up!"
"I was on the edge of my plate!"
"The taste good movie of the year!"

Brown roses have never looked so good.

While I'm not normally a big fan of lemon, the yellow cake looks delicious.

@M: Heavens to Murgatroyd! I forget what DAY it is half the time! (The other half of the time, I just don't give a flying fox.) I just remember that scene because it was just so over-the-top and ridiculous in its excess. All that gaudy crap that was supposed to be impressive because of how powerful/rich/ etc they. Blech. Anyhoo, that cake was just as "too, too" and ridiculous..((And some cakes don't LIKE being made to look ridiculous!!) heh
=^-.-^=

All the cakes are gorgeous!! Great eye, CakeWrecks.

Since I always like following Sunday Sweets' thoughtfully provided links to the cake artists' websites in hopes of seeing more beautiful confectionery, and am often disappointed by the contrast between fantastic cake design and hideous website design, here's a bit of feedback on the companies' homepages. I hope other fans of great cakes will encourage the bakers they admire to put some of the same care they bestow on their art into the design of their advertising materials!

Confectioneress (www.confectioneiress.com/): Elegant and informative! Unobtrusive slideshow in the middle of the page doesn't distract from surrounding contact information and crucial links. One click from the homepage takes you to basic Menu including prices, or to Gallery full of mouth-watering cake porn, or to About page with bakery hours and directions. Perfect marriage of high style and user friendliness.

Tickled Cakes: No website link? How quaint.

Jana's Creative Cakes (www.janascreativecakes.com/): Good basic website, lots of lovely high-quality photos. No pricing information anywhere I could find, but the Contact link has everything you need to know.

Mike's Amazing Cakes (www.mikesamazingcakes.com/): Excellent website! One-click access to Gallery, Contact information, Cake Info, and other material; you do have to "read the fine print" a bit in the Cake Info link to find out about prices. Well-organized abundant detail about menu options as well as the baker's other activities (classes, cake-making tutorials and DVD, cake-tasting calendar, etc.). This is "multifaceted specialty business" online PR done right.

Anna Elizabeth Cakes (www.annaelizabethcakes.com): Well, la-di-DAH: very pretty though a bit precious. No pricing information is available, but at least it only takes one click to find that out. Beautiful cake-porn pictures, although even the non-thumbnail images are pretty small and you can't enlarge them. The Menu page at first glance looks a little silly, with nothing but the same schematic image of a layer cake repeated multiple times in different colors, until you figure out that there are mouseover labels telling you about the flavor combinations. I enjoyed looking at the portfolios but got a distinct "what are you doing here, peasant?" vibe from this website.

Ivory Cake Company (www.ivorycakecompany.co.uk): Another winner. One-click access to superbly organized "Info and Pricing" link, and many of the gallery photos pair a full-view shot with a corresponding closeup: very nice touch for us cake oglers. I'd like to see a homepage-level link to the photo galleries directly, but I had fun poking around for them. Tone is friendly without being corny, self-confident without being snooty. A fun read and a breathtaking cake-gawking experience.

Cake Opera Company (www.cakeoperaco.com): Takes the concept of "photo gallery" a bit too literally: come on folks, you're a baker's website, not actually an art museum. Slow-loading images, pretty though they be, are not really enhanced by fancy rococo frames. As in many real-life art galleries, the vulgar matter of pricing is apparently considered too gauche even to mention: I could not find any information about prices anywhere, not even a discreet message explaining how to ask about them. The "Contact Us" page shows what appears to be a showcase of baked goods in a storefront and provides a location map, but there's no information under the "Hours" heading.

torte di nadia (www.facebook.com/torte.dinadia): Facebook link only, apparently.

Sylvia Weinstock Cakes (sylviaweinstock.com): THE WORST. Literally NOTHING but a pretentious 45-second video slideshow with unnecessary and eye-watering visual effects, followed by a final slide with contact information. No links to anything except the baker's blog, which has some impressive-looking cakes rather unimpressively photographed, as well as some unintentionally amusing text (jokingly admonishing Texas with "Don't succeed [sic] from the union!", for example). Beautiful confectionery creations, but the cake I really want to see this baker make is the one for her web designer's funeral.

My husband and I both follow Cakewrecks. I was showing him the lemon ombré cake. He looked at it for several seconds, gave me a blank stare and said "I don't see any cowboys". He thought I said Hombre and not ombré!

That is beyond amazing. These bakers do with frosting and fondant what Leonardo da Vinci did with paint.

These cakes are almost too beautiful to eat! If they taste half as good as they look, they've got to be the best cakes ever!

Sweet mother of cakes. These cakes are so beautiful, I am truly amazed, it’s like they are edible works of art, I will say it will be a shame to eat them but I think they are very delicious. This really brings out the best of the culinary art.
