Sunday Sweets: A Memorial Day Salute

Our Memorial Day post from 2011 was one of John's favorites of all time, so he convinced me to use the same format this year, only with all new cakes. I hope you enjoy.
Today's Sweets are dedicated to the brave men and women who've given their all for our country. We are forever in their debt.
First to fight for the right,
And to build the Nation’s might,
And the Army goes rolling along.
Some super heroes wear capes around their necks.
Others wear dog tags.

Anchors Aweigh, my boys, Anchors Aweigh!
Farewell to foreign shores,
We sail at break of day, of day.
Through our last night on shore,
Drink to the foam,
Until we meet once more.
Here's wishing you a happy voyage home!

From the Halls of Montezuma,
To the shores of Tripoli;
We fight our country's battles
In the air, on land, and sea;
First to fight for right and freedom
And to keep our honor clean:
We are proud to claim the title
Of United States Marine.

Perfect.
Happy Memorial Day!
Maybe it is just time for my corset, but this post made me teary. You had me at "dog tags"
Love, love, love the first marine cake. Shows what an amazing sheet cake can be.
Love this. Thank you for sharing!
Aww how poignant :') Thanks for all who serve :)
Those were the most amazing cakes. I was blown away. This is a great way to celebrate Memorial Day.
Thank you from me and all my absent brothers-in-arms. TM3 (sub)
The third cake shown was made by my friend Janet. She still amazes me after all these years. You are truly only limited by your own imagination because she can make it all happen.
These are wonderful cakes, and - as the wife of a retired Coast Guard officer- I appreciate that you remembered the Coast Guard in the post. Terrific job all around !
With thanks and appreciation for those who have served and are serving now. Because you do that, I can do this.
Thank you for posting an honorable and lovely memorial day post. Thank you to all our fallen, those who have served and are still serving.
I'm a military wife and loyal Wreckie, and my husband just left for his second deployment two weeks ago. I think this is the first time I've teared up at a Cake Wrecks blog post, and it HASN'T been tears from laughing so hard. This really brightened my morning.
Thank you.
Wow. Beautiful cakes and a beautiful tribute.
As the wife, daughter, and granddaughter of veterans, thank you for this wonderful post. I look forward to Sunday Sweets every week, but this one is even better than usual because it's not just pretty cakes, it's pretty cakes that mean something very important to all of us.
I SOOO wanted to stand and salute while looking at all of those cakes. My husband is a Navy man and he LOVED today's cakes!
Beautiful cakes! However, as an Air Force veteran, I'm curious as to where you got the lyrics for the Air Force song. What you've posted is a mixture of two different verses. Not sure if you did that intentionally or not, but it threw me off a bit.
Beautiful work to honor amazing people.
Out of all the tributes this weekend, this is the only one that has made me cry. I blame the pregnancy hormones, goshdarnit.
Thanks for a great post!
You've brought me to tears many times over, Jen, but this might be the first time you had me all choked up. Beautiful. Just beautiful. Thank you.
A thrill in my heart & tears in my eyes. Just a lovely post today!! :)
Wow. Thank you, and thank you to all the bakers. (Shhh--it's JW Marriott, not Marriot--I grew up with his kids.)
*SNIFF*! Tearing up, here...My Mom and Dad (both gone, now) met in Florida while they were both in the Navy~1941.Mom was a WAVE; Dad was a Chief Petty Officer. They married & honeymooned in Miami...had three beautiful and precious children~one of whom is ME *wink*. So many wonderful memories of love and family today. I was actually born on the "real" Memorial Day (30th), and was TOLD that when I was really young, I thought that the Memorial Day parade was for ME. (What a dork!) I KNOW that both of my folks would have been FLOORED by these absolutely GORGEOUS works of tribute. I tip my non-military (and imaginary) hat to these cake artists! You just don't see things like this every day. Stunning.
=-^u.u^=
Gorgeous cakes! Wonderful tribute. A very heartfelt THANK YOU to all that have served, are currently serving, or have loved ones away from home. I am proud to be an American. Freedom is not free. <3
Awsome...thank you
Such beautiful cakes.
Very well done!
In the fourth grade, our teacher had us sing all four of these songs at the beginning of every day. Mrs. Lommers, I salute you and your efforts to instill a deep respect for the armed forces into the hearts of a bunch of 10-year-olds.
We're not all American, but I feel 100% less uncomfortable about this post if I just pretend they're all Captain America themed cakes...
It's amazing how they can go so WRONG when you see these gorgeous cakes! Wow. Beautiful!
You know [::pulls old fart pants on:;], there was a time when all kids used to learn these songs at school (at least the Navy, Air Force and Marines songs). Now I doubt anyone can sing along to any of the lyrics, unless they're in military families and have learned them. Sort of sad, really - and this is from a person who is as lefty as they come.
Proud to be the daughter of an Army veteran, though. Happy Memorial Day.
@gefeylich:
I hear you; I don't even know if kids recite the Pledge of Allegiance in school these days; it seems that I heard somewhere that they don't (?) Part of me thinks it's a moot point when really young kids are saying the words but not even "hearing" them. To me, it's either in a person's heart, or it's not.
I'm pretty "port"-sided, myself, but truly hope/strive to not let it totally trump any kind of possible open-mindedness. Nothing is true 100% of the time. (I'm 50% sure of that!)
*Sorry--this is NOT the place for this kind of serious and/or political jazz, anyhoo! Carry on, Cakeyness!
Jen, you can use this format every year. It is a beautiful way to give tribute to all the branches of service.
Absolutely beautiful. I got goosebumps multiple times reading through this. Thanks, Jen!
Can anyone tell me which branch goes with which song? I'm not familiar with all these tunes.
And beautiful tribute, Jen.
That made me tear up a little. Bless our troops, past and present.
We just lost my Army father in law on March 24. Tomorrow we will go to the National Cemetery Sarasota (FL) to pay our respects to him and all those other brave men and women who also served. This was a beautiful tribute to all of them. I too am in tears.
Thanks for such an awesome tribute; even sheet cakes can get love (What better way than to use a Marine's dress blues blouse!!)!
I got all choked up. Thank you.
Army daughter and mom here.. Beautiful cakes!
WOW!!! Amazing!!
Thank you for not saying happy, so many think it is BBQ weekend.
As the mother of a soldier - thank you!
