What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Whatever Happens, Let's Be Prefessionals

I'm pretty sure today is one of bakers' least favorite holidays ever, if only because it's so stinking hard to spell:

(I admit it: I had to double check that there aren't two Fs in "professional.")

(Just to be clear: there aren't.)

"Proffional"

"Profissional"

I like how this baker just omits the word entirely:

...and yet still falls down on "Adminiestrations." Heh.

I'm curious to know how THIS happened:

SO CLOSE.

Still, you've got to hand it to the baker: at least "professionals" is right! After all, that's a tough word to spell. Just ask a team of editors, proofreaders, graphic designers, and one sheepish cake blogger:

(Just in case anyone out there is still wondering why there's a sticker on the cover of Wreck the Halls. :D)

And finally, though today used to be known as Secretary's Day, you should never call it that. And if you're a boss of the male persuasion with an assistant of the female persuasion, then you should especially never call it that, misspell "Day" and then pair it with a Betty Boop figurine:

Don Draper called, and he wants a glass of rye. Chop chop, darlin'.

Thanks to Al D., Nancy P., Mary P., Jennifer C., Dana F., Ellery T., & Piper S. for all the assistants!

This is why we need the administrative professionals. They're the ones who know how to spell!

So many syllables. Too many syllables.
It gives me the nerbs!

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

Thanks for the much needed laughs -being downsized sucks :( bahahaha@your book error

Sung to "9-5"

Stumble into work
Start mumbling in the kitchen
See a cake that saps your ambition
Yawnin', wretched, count F's once, then twice
Guess you should be glad that they got you something
But that half-sheet's got your eye twitch jumping
You work for jerks who can't spell to save their lives

Working 9-5
And this is the thanks you're given?
Must be wonderin' why
Clear instructions just weren't given
They think you won't mind
They want you to give them credit
That cake's just enough
To make you crazy if you let it.

I am guessing the "Administratibe" was the result of it being spelled out over the phone to a English-as-a-second-language baker.

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterStella

Profission: a facial tick that commonly develops among workers whose bosses format all their correspondence in purple Comic Sans. Your doctor may prescribe Proffional to control the symptoms, but there is no cure.

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNaomi

Take a letter, Miss Jones. Preferably one of the spare 'f's.

Is there a Wreckerators' Day? There should TOTALLY be a Wreckerators' Day. Picture the hilarity/irony/confusion.

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJoan

As an Admineastrative Preffesional, I heartily endorse this post. Even though I didn't get a cake of my own today. *sigh*

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSharon

I'm pretty sure that "administratibe" is what it sounds like if you say it with a seriously bad head cold...

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAmelia P.

"Administratibe" probably had a Spanish speaker somewhere in the chain--the two letters are pronounced very similarly.

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnn

Just when you think that "Happy Secretary Day" was bad enough - you realize that it actually says " Happy Secretary Dad".... so, um, Dad? Why is your Secretary happy?

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterShelley

"Profissional" — it's an office for a nuclear power plant, a nuclear weapons site, or a radiation research organization.

"Administratibe" — the message was typed, but the typist hit the 'b' instead of the 'v'.

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJoel Polowin

That last one made my day!

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAndi

Administrative Profissional's Day? Is that like a holiday for Kim Jong Un? Because he's pro-fission? *looks around sheepishly* I'll just be leaving now...

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMatt J

In all fairness, maybe the last cake is for a guy whose daughter holds a Cabinet-level position in some government. Which involves Betty Boop Diplomacy. And pink icing...

...
...

I'm in deep, here, aren't I?

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

At the risk of being a bad feminist, I hereby offer to get Don Draper/Jon Hamm anything he wants.

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMissy

@Sharyn ~ I really less than 3 you today! I needed that! (although around these parts it's 8-5)

Umm.. isn't Proffional the drug that killed Michael Jackson? There's a day to celebrate that??? Huh, who knew!

@Matt J ~ Just so you know, snorting hot coffee out your nose hurts... a lot!

@BADKarma ~ Would you like a shovel?

Sadly, I haven't seen cake in my office yet, but it's only 8:30 here so there's still time...

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

Saying that today is one of cake bakers' least favorite holidays "because it's so stinking hard to spell to spell" doesn't really mean much when you've demonstrated that "birthday" is *also* so stinking hard to spell and, all too often, "day" seems to be out of their reach as well.

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

@JimL, it's true. Back in the day, the admins were the best spellers and grammarians in the office because fixing typos with a typewriter was a much bigger hassle than it is now.

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKate

See, if you hadn't told me about the book cover, I would have assumed that it was a really clever in-joke that only the very observant got to enjoy....

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKHandcock

I was thinking 'Administrative' would have been the harder word to spell, but I suppose it is spelled just how it sounds, while 'Professional' has that extra 's' (and sometimes 'f').

Maybe, on the Betty Boop cake, the boss hired her dad as her secretary...at the Betty Boop Museum?

@Jodee: Giving @BADKarma a shovel will just make things worse! : )

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJust Andrea

Did Dad enjoy his secretary until he was served with the summons for the sexual harrassment lawsuit?

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTLC

Maybe that's why my department calls it "Princess Nerd Day"- way easier to spell.

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNagzilla

Sadly, ive seen 'Administrative' gifts that are way worse than a misspelled cake could *ever* be. Hopefully a cake is good for some noms!

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNiri

**Shoveling**

Wait, I know... Just Andrea is correct! Dad IS the Secretary, and his boss is Betty Boop, and he's just ECSTATIC about the whole situation, and...

**digdigdig**

CLANK!!!

... Um, guys? I think I just hit the Bunker...

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

Quote "Thanks to Al D., Nancy P., Mary P., Jennifer C., Dana F., Ellery T., & Piper S. for all the assistants!"

Speaking of grammar, did you mean assistance (not assistants) ? Maybe this was a test on your part to see if any one was reading who could spell and correct grammar? ( ;

[Note From Jen: After all these years, do you really have to ask? ;)]

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnnne

This is why I always break out the spell-check for big ol' words like that.
Oh, and I also peeled off the sticker from my copy of Wreck the Halls. MUCH better that way. ;-)

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJasry

OK, I get it now! I see so many people use the wrong words that I forgot that it might actually be a joke on your part! Love this site and especially Sunday Sweets!

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnnne

Waaa! I thought the sticker on "Wreck The Halls" was deliberately misspelled!

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterThe Cupcake Lady (SA)

Hmmm, thinking back, 'way back to the olden days, when it was called "Secretary's Day", and dinosaurs (called "Executives") roamed the corridors of MajorInsuranceCompanies... it was observed more in spirit than in act.

One boss offered me half his morning muffin - if I would go fetch coffee for both of us.

One boss took "all the girls" out for lunch. Except me - someone had to cover the phones, after all!

One boss gave every "girl" on the floor a flower - a daisy extracted from a street-corner bouquet.

And one boss threatened to have me fired for "reading the paper on company time" - which was part of my job, searching the Wall St. Journal for articles about "our" clients for the files.

So, is "Administrative Professionals Day" better now, office workers of the world?

Gimme that shovel.
Digging a hole to the moon.
Smarter life-forms there.

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHaiku Joy

Oh, ho ho! Thse cakes are actually not wrecks, (tongue in cheek, Theadare), done on purpose by decorators who read Cake Wrecks. (stay with me!)

They miss the good old days of word verification, so they decided to decorate these cakes and let the folks at the offices come up with a definition. It's a team building game! Right? Right?

<crickets chirping>

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterScaperMama

Maybe the persons ordering the cake were waiting for spell check to indicate a misspelled word?

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered Commentercal331

All those secretaries who can' t even spell... this country is in sad shape.

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMeg

@Sharyn-At this very moment my daughter's drama club is rehearsing for this weekend's production of
"9 to 5." (Great seats are still available! Tickets are $10.00 each, $8.00 for groups of 12 or more. Just let me know how many you need.) She swears that they'll be singing your version at least once tonight, if only to drive the drama teacher insane. So if your ears start to burn tonight, you know why.

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

Administratibe: An online order where someone accidentally hit the "b" instead of the "v." The missing day? Who knows?

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterWreckophile #1

THat last one really had me going. I still keep snickering.

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersparkling74

Almost 4:00 here and no cake :( But we DID get a case of beer! And no, I'm so not even kidding!

Hey Craig, looks like the bunker might need some repair work. And maybe you should take that shovel away from BADKarma. Yeah, I KNOW I put it out there but it was supposed to be used for GOOD not EVIL! And since you're, ya know, so tall and built like, ya know, YOU can be the one to take it away. M'kay? :-) Hush KarateLady, I'm not blushing **much** ;-)

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

@Jodee - Oh yes you ARE!!! :-)

@BADKarma - Hey, you should see the suggestive, sexist, email that Verizon sent my husband when we took a line off our family plan. A picture of a nice young cutie (though not terribly suggestively dressed) with this message: "Steven, it's just not the same without you. ...What can we do to win you back? Call ###########."
(Although, hubby argues it's not sexist because, he assured me, it would be a handsome young hottie pictured if *my* name was on the account...)

@Jen - Sure, it was an accident & not an inside joke. Totally on porpoise, right?! (Get it? Porpoise?!) <crickets chirping> Uhhh... Is this mike on?

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKarateLady

@mindy1 HUGS

re: cake 4 ("Fruitful Fantasy")
you take the greenery off the strawberries if they aren't being served quickly
you just cut the tops off and plant the strawberries in a swirl of icing, pointing to the sky

now, I want someone to do a cake with deliberate mythspellings and underline them with red squiggles

the sticker came off my "Wreck the Halls" within 1 minute of its arrival. ahhhh, much better! ;)

April 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

We got pizza today for lunch in my office. And it was gooood...

Now I gotta go get the 'f' outta here.

April 25, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLindarella

It's getting so I have to prescreen the comments before I look at them. If that makes sense, don't worry -- it just means you've come to the right place.

I had seen the shovel before; I just assumed it was Theardare's. You know, because he's into gardening and stuff when he isn't conducting...er, seminars. Yeah, that's it: seminars in...that room where he is. I don't know too many gardeners who prefer to work by moonlight, but to each his own.

I'm sure BADKarma will put it back where it came from.

Cake-related content: I'm pretty sure an "administrative profissional" is someone who oversees a nuclear power plant. No cause for alarm, so long as a wreckerator doesn't wind up doing that.

April 25, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

Jen, I think you meant "prooffreaders..."

:)

April 25, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBeekerBeeBee

Lol sheesh. I never knew how hilarious it is to see so many variations on how to spell professional and administrative. Always amusing and cheering me up. Thanks :)

April 25, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

Huh, I wonder if this is why the one person
asked for admin assistant to be on their cakes?
Although I do know how to spell & if I'm not
sure about something I have a dictionary

April 25, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAna

ALL UR SHOVILZ R MIEN!!!!! MWA, HAHAHAhAHAhAhAhahAhahAhAhAhAhahAhAhaAHAHA, etc.

April 25, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

If there isn't a red squiggly line under the word then it's good enough for me.

April 25, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKristen C.

Uh oh...Theardare alert. Veteran scratchers, be on the lookout.

That didn't sound right. People who are experienced in scratching Theardare behind the ear, be on the lookout. Veterans can do their own scratching, unless it's that one place on the back between the shoulders, and you know the person.

That is all.
