What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Cake Talk

Sometimes cakes can tell their own story.

 Oooh. Now that's cold.

Thanks to Ally H., Jessica P., Wendy R., Megan M., Sierra Z., & Tori B. for the reminder to always be nice to mom. ALWAYS.

Too cheap for a card
when I've already bought cake.
Time to eat my words.

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHaiku Joy

Wow, I feel bad for whatever child/children received the dinosaur cake. :( "Hey, I know you're defective merchandise and all, but Jesus is obligated to love you nonetheless."

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda H.

Wow - actually - "how dare you" is a pretty nice looking cake - regardless of the sentiment. :) Love your blog!

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBarb

Oooo... Ouch!
The yellow one hurts my eyes O.o

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

Ok, I think I speak for everyone when I say "Back stories! Please, oh, please, oh, PUUUUHHHH-LEEEEAAAASE!!! :-)

And as for me, the 1st one is a riot but the last? Ouch!
It reminds me of when I came home after my first year at UT-Austin.
My dad said, "I'm proud of you, Chelle."
"Thanks, Dad."
"Yeah, I didn't think you were going to make it."
(In high school, I was an honors student, took advanced classes, didn't smoke/drink/do drugs/get pregnant, and he didn't think I'd survive even my first year @ UT?!) Thanks for the vote of confidence, Dad. Glad to see that your knowledge of my childhood learning disabilities didn't prejudice you...Geesh!

Sung to "Everybody's Talking at Me"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AzEY6ZqkuE

Every cake is talking at me.
Apologizing to mad neighbors
I dare say remorse will change their minds
It's OK, cake's blaring
Wipe off those unhappy faces
Moms will always win, you realize.

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

Ohhh, the eyes on the "smiley face" cake... holes of despair.
HA!
We actually had neighbors like the first cake, only they didn't give us a cake afterwards. And it was our front walk not the trash can. And it was 3am on a Wednesday. Actually, I don't think a cake would have been enough of an apology!

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterdannysmom

I am drawn to the Remorse cake, but not the dinosaur with goiter problems.

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterFluffy Cow

I agree with Fluffy Cow. The Remorse cake is very appealing. I love the bright, cheerful colors--they contrast nicely with the sentiment.

There *has* to be some back story with the adopted kid and "you lost" cakes.

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterElissa

My thoughts on the remorse cake - Oh, wow that is... bright. I love it!

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDegera

I hereby officially request smiting for the person who made the dinosaur cake for the adopted child. And the people who served it. Horrifying!

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTLC

When I first saw the dinosaur cake, I had a little trouble determining that it was not, in fact, some cross between a dino and a squid...
And the last one? Wow. Just wow.

For people who don't know about The Game, here's its page on the Know Your Meme website: http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/the-game (page should be safe for work, although some of the other pages on the site aren't).

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDotti

>.<;; Gosh darn it. I just spotted profanity on the Know Your Meme link I submitted. Make that page _not_ safe for work then.

Sorry, everyone.

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDotti

Fluffycow, glad you made it, and ignored your dad. Sharyn and Haikujoy hehehe. I,like everyone else MUST know the story behind the dinosaur cake PLEASE

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

I'm very impressed with the How Dare You cake, but not the sentiment. I didn't know they made embossing mats like this. Very unique!

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSharon's Edible Art

Did you notice how the word vomiting is starting to smear? How appropriate! Hose it off! Hose it off!

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSharon's Edible Art

Do people still play "The Game"? Oh, right: Supposedly you're always playing.

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterClassic Steve

When my kids were in high school, they had a game with their friends where you were not supposed to think about "The Game." As soon as someone thought about the game, they would have to tell someone else, "I just lost the game." Then of course, that person lost the game because they were thinking about it, too. Maybe this cake is Mom's way of playing the game.

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJessica H

Not in your trash can, but on your trash can. Ewww!

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNaomi

The remorse cake is awesome. I would love to hear the story on that one.

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCookieD'oh

Well done, Haiku Joy, well done.
Thanks for the wrecks, Jen!!

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMaureen

I'm with the above -- the Remorse cake is bright and cheery, aside from the remorse and all. If one must have remorse, why be glum about it?

But it's the last one that caught hold of my imagination. What game? What game?? I must know!

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKristin

The Remorse cake had me at Remorse. I love whoever thought of using that word on a cake!

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnnie

Okay, I give up. What are the yellow blobs on the dinosaur's neck supposed to be? Is the dinosaur, which sort of contradicts Creationism, supposed to represent the adopted children that Jesus loves too? Is that a question mark ending the writing on the dinosaur cake?

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJoel Polowin

I think this is a probable explanation for the last one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Game_(mind_game)

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTrekkie Gal

Sharyn - brilliant as always.

dannysmom - aw, come on! Cake makes EVERYTHING better!! *eyes "How Dare You" cake above* Um, scratch that.

Personally, I think the dinosaur suffering from severe thyroid problems is, in fact, a metaphor for how messed up adopted kids can be. Maybe Jesus loves them out of pity. Or maybe they're only damaged after they receive this cake. I'm not really sure.

Moms - the source of the best burns on the internet.

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterShannon

Wow, I am trying, and failing, to imagine the circumstances of the dinosaur adoption cake! It seems clearly meant for kid(s), with the dinosaur, but the sentiment is shocking! Good grief, as adoptive mom I nearly spit my coffe at that one! Phew, Jesus loves our kids. Wasn't Jesus kind of adopted by Joseph (his father was God), Joseph stepped in to love and raise him on earth!

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCanadaLes

Dang it Jen! What's with the sneak attack Game reference?? Man!

For those who don't understand it... check out http://www.losethegame.com/

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea

Here's what I assume the back story is on the "you lost" cake.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Game_(mind_game)

My daughter and her friends were very hung up on it for quite a while. It's funny, but also very annoying after a while.

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJo in OKC

That "adopted kid" cake is COLD. Although, to be my own devil's advocate for a moment, perhaps it was to make someone feel better after they were spoken to nastily by someone about adopting a child? (Unfortunately, there still are people who think there's something wrong with adopting a child, I've learned. :( ) But I love the "how dare you!" and "remorse" cakes -- although their sentiments definitely need a backstory, at least they're beautifully done, unlike most cakes we see here!

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

O-o while I get most of them, I'm REALLY confused on that dino cake...

Does he have a thyroid problem? Swollen neck glands? Super jowls? Hodgkins? Neck Cancer??! WHY OH WHY!? POOR MR. SAUROPOD!!!! D:

Oh....its suppose to be a bow?......*squint*.....BS! It's the color of puss, it has to be some disease!! I'm going with Thyroid problem, because well...Sauropods are big, and that's what all big people claim is their problem.(Certainly ain't my reason for being fluffy, I just like food :D)

BUT, since we've covered that. WHAT ON EARTH does a sick sauropod have to do with an adopted kid? Was the sauropod raised by velociraptors or T-rexs? Or did HE adopt a t-rex like Littlefoot?...

Or is this some kind of really BAD reference to Jesus with a Raptor?

Also, Jesus loves everyone, so why are we also telling the cake receiver he's loved even if he's adopted? Is this some kind of evil passive-aggressive Mean-Girl cake or something??

The Questions, they will never cease!!! @_@

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterWhitney

For those who needan explination for the "you just lost the game"cake. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Game_(mind_game)

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterlil

So with that last cake, I think their mom is letting them know they just lost Portal.

...OR DID THEY???

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHarold

D'aaaww, those got to be the funniest cakes ever seen here in CW. Of course, it could be even better to have the answers featured here. Mine would be like:

Cake #1 - "That's okay. Sorry for scratching your car, slashing your tires and smashing your glasses while then :)"

Cake #2 - A cake so cute needs an equally artful answer... "Simple. By having no shame."

Cake #3 - "Apologies accepted!", in black and grey icing, and nothing more;

Cake #4 - "Now, about your 'parents'... " Uh, that does not make a good answer, but I do imagine a second cake on the side saying that. I am sure it would be a CCC. Oh, which leads us to...

Cake #5 - "8:B", on a REAL cake, thankyouverymuch! Freakin'. Cup. Cake. CAKE!!! (Ew!)

Cake #6 - Uh... dammit, ran out of ideas... "NO U!!!"? "FFFUUU"??? (Ahem, open to suggestions!)

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterGutz Grilla

How dare you....poop roses on my cake!?

There's definitely something off about the dinosaur but I'm more upset by the passive-aggressive sentiment.

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEsty

I choose to believe the mom who gave that last cake was playing "the game" and is therefore super awesome and sneaky.

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSweetums

Jesus loves adopted children,
And the dinosaurs who ruled the world.
Red and aqua, yellow bright,
That remorse cake’s a delight.
Not so much cakes from the neighbor who hath hurled.

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

crud. now i've lost the game!

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered Commenteraimee

These are hilarious. (Mostly.) I especially love the "Remorse!" cake with it's cheery flowers and brightness.

The adopted kid Jesus dinosaur cake? Not so much. It just seems... cold hearted, I guess.

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNoey

"Remorse!" is definitely my favorite. Hilarious.

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMelanie

That last cake is an example of how stressing certain syllables changes the whole meaning of the sentence. I'll give mom the benefit of the doubt and assume that she wanted to cheer up her child after a loss, as in:
You JUST lost the game (meaning one game is insignificant)

Contrast that with:
YOU just lost the game (it was definitely YOUR fault)
and
You just lost THE GAME (that game was a matter of life and death)

Sadly, frosting does not convey such fine nuances.

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPrincess Fiona

I must say, that's the most festive "Remorse!" I've ever seen...

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

How dare you looks like a Costco cake. But the dinosaur one actually made me gasp, because I have a niece and a nephew who are adopted. What on earth were they thinking?!?

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNagzilla

http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/the-game

That last one!!! Why would you do that to us, Jenn?????

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKelli

I was more depressed after noticing the comment on the dino cake has ! ? after it.

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterThe Former CB

#1: I like how the baker made the word 'vomitting' actually appear to be vomitting.

#2: "I am so shocked and appalled by your actions that I am going to bake a cake and painstakingly decorate it just so I can write on it how shocked and appalled I am!" Teehee!

#3: I agree with Elissa on the this one. I like it. Er, that is, I WOULD like it if it were not a wreck. *looks around nervously for Theardare*

#4: I am assuming (hoping?) this one is a joke cake. I am curious: 1) What is that thing on the Dino's neck? 2) Are those the actual colors of the cake, or is the picture in grayscale? 3) Why is there a question mark after the exclamation mark at the end of that sentence? Are you asking us or telling us?!

#5: That's pretty much my facial expression whenever I see a CCC (patooie!).

#6: I couldn't figure out what "You Just Last The Game" meant. I seriously read it like five times before I got that it says "Lost". If this is a game of wills regarding not eating cake, then I love it. If this is a baseball or somesuch sporting event type of game, Mom has very little faith in her child and/or child's team to have pre-ordered the cake. : (

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJust Andrea

I have to admit I chuckled at the "lost the game" cake. Oh, random mom, you crazy!

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMatt J

@Classic Steve: Is that a Keen Eddie reference? Loved that episode!

These cakes ... hmm, there are no words. None I can use here in any case. Thanks for the laughs!

April 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBubbe

@SuBee - You win the internet today.

I'm afraid how my husband, who's adopted, would react if I show him the dinosaur cake.

How would you like to be the baker/decorator of the bright cake, and instead of "Happy Birthday" or "Congratulations" being written on the cake, the order is for "Remorse!"
