Sunday Sweets: Threadcakes, Take Two!
August 26, 2012 Hot dog! It's time for the 2nd Round of Threadcakes!
To recap: Threadcakes is a contest hosted every year by Threadless.com and co-judged by her grand-high-cakiness herself, Jen! Bakers make cakes inspired by Threadless shirt designs, and I use the term "inspired by" loosely, because these cakes are more like perfect replicas. So exact, it's almost eerie. Like this trio of owls here:

Incredible how the baker captured this design's hand-sketched look in fondant. I also want to hang this one on my wall! I don't really have an Arabian-moon-colony theme happening in my home right now, but I'd be willing to consider it.

These designs are so darn creative! I think I need a murderous-handlebar-head-shark cake, too. Or the shirt version would be fine, if not nearly as tasty.

It's a Mount Rushmore of Muppets! I love how it plays with scale, from the big balloons above to the tiny little trees in the foreground. That, and Bunsen and Beaker on a bicycle built for two!

Ha! This one really looks like a drawing come to life with all the outlined edges. It must be a baby AT-AT, because the ones in the movies are nowhere near toilet-sized. (I actually have no idea what I'm saying and googled everything about that last sentence. Sorry. I'm just not that up-to-speed with Star Trek.) (KIDDING!)

Aw, Gandalf and Bilbo! This baker totally nailed Bill Watterson's 'Calvin and Hobbes-y' style, which is how I've always secretly wished I could draw. I'm tragically stuck in the land of stick figures and smiley faces.

Which is not such a bad thing, I guess. Because oh my goodness, this one is drawn to perfection. (Fondanted to perfection?) And how funny is the plight of the smiley? I can relate. That's basically my entire morning routine, right there.

Have you ever seen anything so lovely? I would wear this and eat it and display it and cradle it in bed with me at night. (Ok, maybe not that last one.) What insanely incredible talent.
I almost feel bad for Jen. So many amazing Threadcakes this year, how could you possibly pick a favorite?! (If you're curious, watch the Threadcakes site this week, because I think they're announcing the winners very soon!)

Jen, The AT-AT drawing looks like it was done by an artist in Jacksonville, FL named James Hance. His works can be seen on his page jameshance.com . His mashups of Winnie the Pooh & Star Wars are amazing. He has a kid's book titled "Wookie The Chew"..... and he also does wonderful stuff with the Muppets... check him out......... no cakes, but wonderful artwork.........
The neverending solo is just awesome. That smile factory makes me smile :D and the arabian moon one I could easily picture as a wall sculpture :O

WANT. OWLS. NOW!!! Either the cake or the shirt will be acceptable! Seriously, all of those cakes are incredible, as are the shirts, and make me doubt my own artistic talents. (Well, that's not that difficult for the cakes, as I'm pretty much a straight up "bake a homemade cake and slap some homemade buttercream on" kind of person - tastes fantastic, looks blah.) But I've kind of got a thing for owls. No one should ever ask me to judge anything that might involve owls or cats, because they would automatically get extra points just for being owls and/or cats, heh!
I think the adorable walker is from Star Wars, not Star Trek. Anyway, it's awesome-cute!
And I thought the last batch of Threadless cakes were fantastic. I don't think that I could choose the best one. What artistry!

I love the addition of the Elvish sign on the Halfling and Wizard cake. So creative!

AWESOME! I LOVE that Falcor looks even more real in the cake then it does in the shirt. Rebecca totally captured his spirit in this cake! And of course anything that Lizof Artisan Cake Co does is amazing! Great Sunday Sweets post!
Thread cakes are some of my all time favorite posts on CW. These are no exception! They are all amazing but that last cake...is absolutely breathtaking!!!!!! I mean, WOW!!!!!!! I would hate to be the judge of this competition, that's all I'm sayin'.
Love threadcakes! Since this week you did the exact duplicates, maybe next week you can do the awesome inspired by cakes! Some of my faves in the past were ones that didn't duplicate the shirt exactly, but played with the theme in a clever way (though the duplicates are awesome and amazing too!)
He's probably playing "A New Fondant Glory".
Ahhh Jen, once again reminding me why both Threadless and Threadcakes are so awesome.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got some t-shirts to add to cart in preparation for my next payday.

As the maker of the owl cake, I can confirm that not only are they all edible (and were eaten), I may also have to seek physiotherapy after making it. My neck and wrist were intensely painful for several days afterwards.

I have the owl shirt-so excited to see it in cake form, and so beautifully done.
If anyone is looking for the shirt, it is still up n threadless, just search owls. Now that I looked, I want the backpack, too. The artist is Rachel Caldwell, I have another amazing owl print of hers, as well.
Absolutely amazing! I'm not sure I could eat any of these cakes, but I'd sure like to try!

I think Cake Falcor looks way more like Real Falcor than T-shirt Falcor.
