What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Threadcakes 2012

It's that time again! Yep, my favorite cake competition of the year, ThreadCakes, is going on NOW. The rules are simple: make a cake based on your favorite Threadless t-shirt design, take pictures, and submit them for a chance at fabulous prizes.

I've been asked to help judge the entries again this year, which is always a big honor, tons of fun, and so stinking hard. Don't believe me? Then just keep scrolling to see some of the fab entries that have come in so far!

(Actually, keep scrolling even if you DO believe me - I wouldn't want you to miss out.)

I'll be posting the Threadless design first, followed by the cake entry. Hit the links to see each entrant's page, complete with process pics and descriptions.

"Pillow Fight Champion"

Look at all that detail! And those spindly little legs! This Champ is no featherweight - so how is he standing up?

"The Original Copycat"

Awww-dorable.

"Day of the Dead Panda"

So perfect - you couldn't ask for a more exact replica than this.

"Your Love Keeps Lifting Me" (Muppets)

WHOAH. Once again you've got to wonder: how is that standing? Is the cake levitating? 'Cuz I think I'd give extra points for levitating cake. Just sayin'.

 "Sushi"

 By Natasha Tantama

I think I'll let sleeping sushi lie.

 "Butterfly Effect"

Ok, yeah, it's creepy.
Creepy COOL.

 "Knight Owl"

I like the little plumes on the helmet. Such a hoot. :)

"A Room With A View"

These colors are the stuff that dreams are made of. In fact, I think the cake just might be prettier than the original design! Gorgeous.

"Friendship Totem Pole Muppets DTG"

By Nanthini Retnam

It's the Muppets again! [Kermit flail] Yaaaaay! Love this design - and I never would have guessed it'd look this great in cake. I highly recommend clicking over to see all the in-process pics, on this and all the cakes today. You'll be blown away by the amount of detail and effort and time that went into each one.

And while you're at it, click over to the Threadcakes gallery to see all the other Sweets I *didn't* feature today. You'll love it.

The contest is open 'til August 13th, so if you like to bake, why not give it a try? It's great fun, and most of the entrants are hobby bakers, so don't think you have to be a pro to enter. And hey, if you mess up TOO badly, you could still send me a picture. You know, for an amateur Wreck feature. ;)

Have a Sweet to nominate? Then send it to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.

That sushi cake is the cutest thing I have EVER seen!!! Now I have to get the t-shirt!

OMG those are awesome. I love the copycats and the sushi cake :D and the muppet balloon cake is amazing :O

July 29, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

Obviously, the floating Muppet cake has a small anti-gravity generator inside. Duh.

I love Threadcakes, both because the cakes are incredible and because it introduced me to Threadless, which has THE COOLEST t-shirts. (Ninja Cat, Haikus are easy, What Would Macgyver Do?, Mr.Mitten's Big Adventure, Rebel Lighthouse...) I desperately want the "Copy Cat" one -- it was out last time I looked. I also want one of the fondant copy cats -- just because.

Sunday Sweets continues to amaze me with the mind-blowing amount of talent it showcases. I don't envy you the judging. You'll post the winners, right?

So many awesome cakes! My favs are "Room with a View", "Butterfly Effect", and "Cherise", which you didn't feature here: http://www.threadcakes.com/entries/view/1400#0

Lovely!

And now I have to order the panda shirt. Those are amazing!

THE LITTLE COPYCATS! I WANT ONE! Too freaking cute...

July 29, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMichelleH

Amazing!! I'm always in awe when it's Threadcakes time.

P.S can we have Olympics themed cakes next week? Living and working in London I can't get away from it but having cakes would make it a bit more bearable!

I love Threadcakes! Just like Sharyn, Threadcakes introduced me to Threadless. Love those shirts. :) Can't wait to see the winners!

I could never be a baker. First of all, I don't have the talent or skill to do that. But, the main reason is: When I see the photos of the cake cut and served, it makes me CRY!!!! I couldn't handle seeing the cut cut ("destroyed") like that!!!

For the first time since I've been viewing the Threadcakes posts, every cake is either exactly like or even better than the t-shirt graphic! Since all the graphics are amazing, that's saying A LOT! The cake versions of the copy cats are too adorable!! I'm mystified by the floating Muppets (though, Sharyn's theory of the anti-gravity generator does seem the only plausible explanation), and am totally in love with the Knight Owl!!

These are amazing- all of them are. You guys really do a great job each Sunday for your 'Sunday Sweets' feature. Out of all of these AMAZING cakes, I especially like Claire Murphy's (Day of the Dead Panda AND The Original Copycat) and the Knight Owl cake.

Too cute!

For Andrea: I don't decorate cakes professionally, but when I make a cake, set it up, etc and it doesn't get cut...it upsets me. All that work and they don't cut it or eat it; why bother ordering it?!!

Knight Owl and Copy Cats are way too cute!! Love the Muppets ones too, but that could be because my dad's real name is Kermit

take a look at this Mermaid one http://www.threadcakes.com/entries/view/1455 it's got amazing details added that weren't in the original but work perfectly

July 29, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLegotech

Wooooooooooooooooo! I've been taking decorating classes all year in the hopes I'd wind up on this page, and I'm on it twice (obsessive much?). You've made my day

The copycats were damn hard to eat, as were the cakepop versions I made with leftover cake.

(I've also just noticed that I'm currently the most prolific baker, with 16 entries across 3 years. It's a weird thing to be proud of...)

July 29, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterClaire Murphy

That owl is sweet! And the kitties! OMG, the kitties!

I agree with Laura, could we have some Olympic cakes for next weeks Sunday Sweets? That'd be awesome. (-:

When it comes to cutting the cake, I really don't mind. For me, all the fun is in decorating it, I lose interest once it's finished. I normally just give my cakes to classmates, who then regard me warily as they slice into it. It's like they think I'll murder them for daring to eat the cake I just told them to eat

July 29, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterClaire Murphy

Keep rockin it, Claire!!! Looks like you have a profession ahead of you! (Professional CakeWrecks Star!) :)

July 29, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterdnana

wow, how would you possibly judge? wonderful!

July 29, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterletitia

The "Knight Owl" shirt is my favorite from Threadless (and I have a ton of their shirts, so it's hard to pick a favorite), so of course I love the cake based on it. If only I could have a sculpture like that for my apartment!

July 29, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMollie

Amazing. But they don't look ... cake-like. I do love the Knight Owl - just a pushover for puns, I guess.

Wow. I love, Love, LOVE the sushi with little blankets! But I gotta say if the top of that Muppet thing is actually edible then you have got to give an extra point or two for the levitating cake! And it's not just the fact that it IS levitating.... it's WHAT is levitating! Awesome! :)

Wow, these are all awesome. My favourite has to be A Room With A View! Can't go wrong with the trees, blues and the record player.

July 30, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterchristopher

Love Knight Owl and on the site, I liked the Ghostbusters one! Cute idea!

July 30, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterlisadh

When I saw the creepy baby during the opening ceremony, I immediately thought of Cakewrecks! Then, when Matt Lauer said it was creepy, I broke out laughing. Somehow, I knew there would be reference to it here.

July 30, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHeidi Littenberg

Copycats FTW! I have a lot of experience with cats and one thing I am sure about is if a cat is going to use a copier, he is going to photocopy his butt!
