Sunday Sweets: Villain Edition!
July 15, 2012 San Diego Comic-Con is going on right now, but tragically I'm not there, which means I've been obsessively checking my Twitter feed all weekend so I don't miss anything. (It's not easy living vicariously through blurry twitpics of celebrities and great cosplay [and sometimes celebrities IN great cosplay] - but by golly, I'm trying.)
So since I've got major geekery on the brain anyway, I thought I'd focus today's Sweets on - what else? Geek cakes. But more than that, I've decided to feature geeky villain cakes. 'Cuz geeky villains are cool. (It's the outfits, am I right?)

I am deeply ashamed to admit that I've never read Dune, but I'm going to assume the giant sandworms fall more on the "villain" side of the spectrum:

WOWZA. Look at all that detail on the gate! And the watery texture on the event horizon! Seriously, this cake is encoding and locking ALL my chevrons, IF ya know whatta mean. (Stargate humor. Heh. Aheh. Heh.)

Vader!! Shiny, shiny Vader. Seriously, I have my own Vader helmet at home (don't ask), and it's not half as shiny as this cake. I think this cakes looks better, too. Seriously amazing.

WOW! The Queen of Hearts cake, Storm Trooper cake and that Tower of Orthanc are just amazing. Actually all these confections are drool-worthy but those three really blew me away. And actually yes, the sand worms from Dune really aren't evil... or good. They just ... are. They are important to the story, and that is a very cool wedding cake!

I hope the sandworm thing doesn't reach Epcot proportions.
While the worms are often dangerous, they are no more evil than lions. They do what they do, and that is often at odds with what humans want to do. That doesn't make them villains.
I don't think it's much of a spoiler (of a fifty-year-old book) to point out that they can be ridden, since that's what the cake shows.
Those are all so awesome! They don't even look like cake. :O
Also, where have I seen that second one before?
OMG the last cake is amazing-some geek somewhere would LOVE that as a sculputure :O I love th Sauron eye cake. The alien predator cake is cool, and the couple that ordered it must have a great sense of humor hehe ;)
Ok am I the only one who saw a flaming hoo-ha instead of an evil eye? Cakes are gorgeous, don't get me wrong. I guess I looked at it while my mind was doing some gutter diving. Carry on.
Thanks. After reading two really depression items in a row this morning on FB, I really needed to see the awesomeness of this week's Sunday Sweets. As someone who's tortured herself by reading all the Dune books, I especially like the sandworm cake. Shai-hulud would be proud...and then he would swallow up the cake and anything-and anyone-nearby in one super-heated gulp and plunge deeper into the desert.

Black Cherry is part of Little Cherry Cake Company. All the geeky/dark/twisted/horror cakes get labelled as Black Cherry. They are my favorite type to make! x
What George P said. The worms do what they do. They are wild creatures of the desert.
And please, at the very least, read the first Dune book. It is one of the best sci-fi books ever written.
Wow. Just wow. (and somehow, saying "just" doesn't cut it as these aren't to be dismissed by any means. I am awed.)

Sandworms are wild animals, and as such -- especially being about 30 feet tall and about 300-400 feet long, IIRC (the one on the cake is definitely scaled down, compared with the humans on it) -- if you go into their territory and mess with them, they can be very dangerous. Being a villain requires both intelligence and evil intent, and sandworms have neither.

Sandworms generally don't take on a "villain" or even "monster you have to fight" role in the books or movies; instead they're more "hazard" or "conveyance" (or, since the sandworms produce the Spice that the books hinge on, "plot device."
Now, if one were talking about the sandworm/human hybrid that is the epinomious _God Emperor of Dune_, that might be a different matter.
Okay, first, the Startrooper being eaten is really kind of disturbing, although I concede it proves your point. Second, please please please tell me that Alien cake wasn't for a wedding...

*picks jaw up off floor* Wow. Those are *awesome*! I bow down to Erin, maker of the incredibly awesome and mind-blowingly detailed Barad-dur. The Vader helmet totally rocks as well, and--they're all awesome. I'm not worthy!
I would say "off with their heads!" to anyone who dared to cut into the Queen of Hearts cake. "Breathtaking" doesn't even come close. WOW.
I really have no idea about this geek stuff, but the craftmanship is totally amazing. The life-sized storm trooper--wow! I don't even begin to know how a cake that big is made.
Frankly, Jen, I would be more surprised if you didn't own a Vader helmet (home edition).
To akathleen: The Tower is Barad-dur, not Orthanc. Orthanc is the Tower at Isengard. Don't mean to be snarky, just informative. I'm just really, really nerdy and can't help it.
HOW did they make the Vader helmet so shiny? I've never seen a shiny cake before - love it!
All are wonderful - but the Queen of Hearts is A-Freankin-Mazing.

Dude. Where are the GLaDOS cakes? I mean, even though it's hard to build a cake upside down, GLaDOS is the best villain ever. Don't you Portal fans agree with me?
Here's a fun factiod. The Dune cake was made by the same person who did the "You remind me of the Babe" cake. I know this because, after the "Body of eck that shArt" cake, I went to her website to she hadn't done it. I spotted the Dune cake instead.
And yes, it seems that the sandworm cake *is* reaching EPCOT proportions.

Gotta chime in - Dune is a must read! And, true the sand worms in Dune are just 'there' and quite symbiotic with the Fremen; however, they would seem villainous if you dared to lump them into the same type as, say, the worms in Tremors. (Oh good lord, did I just admit to having seen that movie?).

I've been reading your blog for ages but never commented before but now I must! These cakes were absolutely mind blowing! I love pretty cakes (no idea how to make one though) but geek stuff! Wow! I'd sooo love that Alien loves Predator cake, I would definitely have it for my wedding... Note to myself: find a bloke who wants to be Predator...

I LOVE Scotts comment above! Only way is to cut from top to bottom and very carefully. This was one of my favorite cakes to make. I am a huge geek myself so it was a total labor of love! More nerd work to come!!!

Wow. I don't remember that many jaw-droppers all being in one post for a while. It's probably just my inner geek, but wow. I thought the Stargate was the best, then came the stormtrooper, and then, holy crap, that Tower!!!!! AAIIEEEEE!! So amazing! That's one of those cakes you preserve forever to just stare at in awe. Re Dune, just watch the movie ,its tosh but has some pretty looking men in it and the books are just too much like eating sand....I have no idea what it was all about and it was incredibly hard work, still get a sick headache thinking about all that ..."stuff" 35 years after I tried reading it because its a "classic"

Ooooh...I Luurve Darth Vader. My mouth watered at that one. And the storm-trooper is amazing. I have no idea how anyone makes a life-sized cake anything, so those deals always amaze me.
Love these cakes. The tower...the queen of hearts...the sandworm. Dune was the first sci-fi book I ever read and got me turned on to the genre. I read the 1st three but after that they weren't (in my opinion) very good. However, the original Dune might be worth the read! Just so you know about it, just sayin'
Actually, the sandworms of Arakkis (DUNE) are more god-like to the Fremen (the native people of Arakkis) than they are villians. The sandworms are misunderstood by the Harkonnen and Atreides clans (as well as the Emperor of the known Universe) and are essentially left alone, as the beasts can become huge. But within the mythology of the Fremen, the sandworms are "Shai-Hulud" beasts that are worshipped and respected). The sandworms create the Spice which is used by many different guild factions within the DUNE universe, and are essential for space travel.
So no, not a villian. :) More a god in disguise.
I was lucky enough to be at the con where that Storm Trooper cake was served (though I didn't want to wait in line to taste it)! I grabbed the baker's card to keep on hand for when I get married. :D
Just throwing this out there. If you read the post, she says she is going to take a break from the villains to show the Stargate cake because it's awesome. Read it again. She wasn't implying that Teal'c is a villain. Hate when people correct things when they obviously didn't read the post.
