What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Villain Edition!

San Diego Comic-Con is going on right now, but tragically I'm not there, which means I've been obsessively checking my Twitter feed all weekend so I don't miss anything. (It's not easy living vicariously through blurry twitpics of celebrities and great cosplay [and sometimes celebrities IN great cosplay] - but by golly, I'm trying.)

So since I've got major geekery on the brain anyway, I thought I'd focus today's Sweets on - what else? Geek cakes. But more than that, I've decided to feature geeky villain cakes. 'Cuz geeky villains are cool. (It's the outfits, am I right?)

First up, the horniest Loki cupcake you will ever see:

Submitted by Sarae B., made by Nerdache Cakes

*snerk*

I discovered this Tumblr blog a few weeks ago, and just about flipped for all of Ant's nerdy cupcakes. (And she's only 19!) You should click over and check it out - so much geek glee.

It takes a special kind of couple to have a Predator/Alien-themed wedding cake:

Submitted by Kenkire, made by Black Cherry Cake Company

Specifically, a couple who should be friends with me. (Oh, and to whoever decided to put a tiny top hat on the Predator: Bravo. BRA...VO.

I am deeply ashamed to admit that I've never read Dune, but I'm going to assume the giant sandworms fall more on the "villain" side of the spectrum:

Sub'd by Rebecca A., made by Jana's Fun Cakes

(I'm sure you guys will correct me in the comments if I'm wrong.)

Also, this is another wedding cake, if you can believe it. Check out all the tiny teeth!

Now here's a classic villain from my childhood, so I know him well:

Sub'd by Nick B., and made by Truly Scrumptious - the same folks behind that jaw-dropping standing Cyberman I featured last April.

It's here to EXTERMINATE your hunger, haha! (Sorry; obligatory Dalek joke.) I like how Dalek dresses are all the rage at conventions now, too. Who knew killer robots wielding bathroom plungers could be so chic?

Speaking of chic, here's the best-dressed villain in today's post:

Yes, really - she's handmade, and edible! (Check out another closeup here.) By the always-amazing Highland Bakery.

I have to take a quick break from the villains to show you the best Stargate cake I've ever seen:

WOWZA. Look at all that detail on the gate! And the watery texture on the event horizon! Seriously, this cake is encoding and locking ALL my chevrons, IF ya know whatta mean. (Stargate humor. Heh. Aheh. Heh.)

Ok, back to the bad guys:

Sub'd by Kat B., made by Cake O'Clock

I'd like to thank Cake O'Clock for going easy on the raspberry syrup. Thank you.

And now, perhaps the most iconic villain of all...

Sub'd by Elizabeth A., made by Crazy Cakes

Vader!! Shiny, shiny Vader. Seriously, I have my own Vader helmet at home (don't ask), and it's not half as shiny as this cake. I think this cakes looks better, too. Seriously amazing.

Of course, we can't have Vader (or at least his helmet) without an official Storm Trooper escort:

"Hi."

That, my friends, IS the dessert you're looking for: a life-sized Storm Trooper cake!

Don't believe it's cake? PROOF:

Oooh. Stabbed in the back - that's cold.

We haven't had enough comic book villains yet, so...how about Venom?

Sub'd by Gayle G., made by Chocmocakes

And an adorable stylized Harley Quinn?

By Dream Day Cakes

I love this style SO MUCH. I only wish they had a matching Joker cake, too!

It's amazing what some bakers can do with just buttercream; check out this Sauron's Eye cake:

Sub'd by Claudia S., made by Emily/ emzstar

"I SEEEE YOU.

"So stop picking your nose. Srsly. That's disgusting."

And every evil disembodied eyeball needs a giant evil tower, right? Right.

BEHOLD!

By Cakes by Erin

This cake - yes,  CAKE - was over two feet tall, and set on a One Ring cake base.  Look at all the crazy detail in there:

I'm at a loss as to where - and how! - you'd even BEGIN to cut this. Care to weigh in on that, Erin?

Well, that's it for this week's Sweets, guys! So, to those of you enjoying the nerdvana that is Comic-Con right now: have fun! I hate you a little! And to the rest of you: mosey on over to Epbot for some of my favorite pics and video (ESPECIALLY the video - funniest thing I've seen all week) from SDCC - there's plenty there to make your inner geek squeal.

And, as always, if you have a Sweet to nominate then please send it to me at Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com!

WHAT? When it's an Alien cake there is no such thing as too much raspberry syrup! Call yourself a geek?

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJo

WOW! The Queen of Hearts cake, Storm Trooper cake and that Tower of Orthanc are just amazing. Actually all these confections are drool-worthy but those three really blew me away. And actually yes, the sand worms from Dune really aren't evil... or good. They just ... are. They are important to the story, and that is a very cool wedding cake!

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterakathleen

*looks at gold item behind the Queen*
Did the Queen of Hearts wet herself?

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterlz

I hope the sandworm thing doesn't reach Epcot proportions.

While the worms are often dangerous, they are no more evil than lions. They do what they do, and that is often at odds with what humans want to do. That doesn't make them villains.

I don't think it's much of a spoiler (of a fifty-year-old book) to point out that they can be ridden, since that's what the cake shows.

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterGeorge P

Those are all so awesome! They don't even look like cake. :O
Also, where have I seen that second one before?

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSydney

OMG the last cake is amazing-some geek somewhere would LOVE that as a sculputure :O I love th Sauron eye cake. The alien predator cake is cool, and the couple that ordered it must have a great sense of humor hehe ;)

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

Ok am I the only one who saw a flaming hoo-ha instead of an evil eye? Cakes are gorgeous, don't get me wrong. I guess I looked at it while my mind was doing some gutter diving. Carry on.

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDana

Thanks. After reading two really depression items in a row this morning on FB, I really needed to see the awesomeness of this week's Sunday Sweets. As someone who's tortured herself by reading all the Dune books, I especially like the sandworm cake. Shai-hulud would be proud...and then he would swallow up the cake and anything-and anyone-nearby in one super-heated gulp and plunge deeper into the desert.

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJanna

Yay! The Alien Loves Predator cake is mine :)
Black Cherry is part of Little Cherry Cake Company. All the geeky/dark/twisted/horror cakes get labelled as Black Cherry. They are my favorite type to make! x

What George P said. The worms do what they do. They are wild creatures of the desert.
And please, at the very least, read the first Dune book. It is one of the best sci-fi books ever written.

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTMac

Wow. Just wow. (and somehow, saying "just" doesn't cut it as these aren't to be dismissed by any means. I am awed.)

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

What George said above. Sandworms are wild animals, and as such -- especially being about 30 feet tall and about 300-400 feet long, IIRC (the one on the cake is definitely scaled down, compared with the humans on it) -- if you go into their territory and mess with them, they can be very dangerous. Being a villain requires both intelligence and evil intent, and sandworms have neither.

Angie

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAngie

Sandworms generally don't take on a "villain" or even "monster you have to fight" role in the books or movies; instead they're more "hazard" or "conveyance" (or, since the sandworms produce the Spice that the books hinge on, "plot device."

Now, if one were talking about the sandworm/human hybrid that is the epinomious _God Emperor of Dune_, that might be a different matter.

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermneme

Okay, first, the Startrooper being eaten is really kind of disturbing, although I concede it proves your point. Second, please please please tell me that Alien cake wasn't for a wedding...

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPersephone

Psst! You didn't credit the buttercream eye cake...

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKayla

I want the Dune cake. You should read the series immediately.

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLara

Are you implying that Teal'c is a villain? Because he's not.

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCyberjar88

*picks jaw up off floor* Wow. Those are *awesome*! I bow down to Erin, maker of the incredibly awesome and mind-blowingly detailed Barad-dur. The Vader helmet totally rocks as well, and--they're all awesome. I'm not worthy!

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCheryl

I would say "off with their heads!" to anyone who dared to cut into the Queen of Hearts cake. "Breathtaking" doesn't even come close. WOW.

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJules

I really have no idea about this geek stuff, but the craftmanship is totally amazing. The life-sized storm trooper--wow! I don't even begin to know how a cake that big is made.

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterdoodlebug

Frankly, Jen, I would be more surprised if you didn't own a Vader helmet (home edition).

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNaomi

To akathleen: The Tower is Barad-dur, not Orthanc. Orthanc is the Tower at Isengard. Don't mean to be snarky, just informative. I'm just really, really nerdy and can't help it.

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLOTRLover

HOW did they make the Vader helmet so shiny? I've never seen a shiny cake before - love it!

All are wonderful - but the Queen of Hearts is A-Freankin-Mazing.

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSara

You're not missing anything not having read Dune, I promise.

Love the Storm Trooper - amazing!

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterrenee

I don't know what type of cable you have (if any) but channel G4 is playing live content from SDCC. Better than twitter perhaps?

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJen

Dude. Where are the GLaDOS cakes? I mean, even though it's hard to build a cake upside down, GLaDOS is the best villain ever. Don't you Portal fans agree with me?

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAmalyaSoramuni

Here's a fun factiod. The Dune cake was made by the same person who did the "You remind me of the Babe" cake. I know this because, after the "Body of eck that shArt" cake, I went to her website to she hadn't done it. I spotted the Dune cake instead.
And yes, it seems that the sandworm cake *is* reaching EPCOT proportions.

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkelticat

Thanks so much for including our cake with these other magnificent submissions!

p.s. We are still hoping someday you'll forgive TX for making you all sick and come to our cake show!

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKyla

Whoops! I knew that- sorry! That's what I get for posting before my brain cells are fully activated...

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterakathleen

Gotta chime in - Dune is a must read! And, true the sand worms in Dune are just 'there' and quite symbiotic with the Fremen; however, they would seem villainous if you dared to lump them into the same type as, say, the worms in Tremors. (Oh good lord, did I just admit to having seen that movie?).

LOVE the Queen of Hearts cake!

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle P

I've been reading your blog for ages but never commented before but now I must! These cakes were absolutely mind blowing! I love pretty cakes (no idea how to make one though) but geek stuff! Wow! I'd sooo love that Alien loves Predator cake, I would definitely have it for my wedding... Note to myself: find a bloke who wants to be Predator...
You cheered up a rubbish Sunday, thanks!

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEdith

One does not simply CUT into Mordor...

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterScott

Love the Stargate Cake. The stormtrooper cake is incredible! And Sauron's tower... very cool.

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCarole M

So who gets to eat the Stormtrooper's butt?

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterShanti

I LOVE Scotts comment above! Only way is to cut from top to bottom and very carefully. This was one of my favorite cakes to make. I am a huge geek myself so it was a total labor of love! More nerd work to come!!!

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterErin (Cakes by Erin)

Love these cakes! I hope the Vader helmet cake was red velvet on the inside!

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

The Queen is fab- and now she go cry herself to sleep on her HUGE pillo', seriously, it's a virtual planetoid! (Sorry but it seemed no one else picked up on the SIMAAM refs)

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterStineB

I am fan-girling over here because CAKE WRECKS SUNDAY SWEETS.

Wow. I don't remember that many jaw-droppers all being in one post for a while. It's probably just my inner geek, but wow. I thought the Stargate was the best, then came the stormtrooper, and then, holy crap, that Tower!!!!! AAIIEEEEE!! So amazing! That's one of those cakes you preserve forever to just stare at in awe. Fabulous cakes today. Thanks for the geekery!

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLaura P.

Yay! I've been waiting for you to post the Loki and Stormtrooper cakes. Thanks for another wonderful Sunday Sweets. <3

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSaraƩ

The Dune cake is spice cake, right?

July 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

Bravo Scott!

And my husband's comment on the subject? "One cake to rule them all!"

July 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCapt_Video

great cakes! I saw a flaming hoo-ha too BTW
Re Dune, just watch the movie ,its tosh but has some pretty looking men in it and the books are just too much like eating sand....I have no idea what it was all about and it was incredibly hard work, still get a sick headache thinking about all that ..."stuff" 35 years after I tried reading it because its a "classic"
Herbert is up there with Ron L for inventing seriously odd stuff.

July 16, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterdiddleymaz

All those comments and not one on the hand grabbing a big handful of Storm Trooper crotch cake?

July 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBL

Teal'c most certainly was not a villain.

July 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

Ooooh...I Luurve Darth Vader. My mouth watered at that one. And the storm-trooper is amazing. I have no idea how anyone makes a life-sized cake anything, so those deals always amaze me.

July 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRed

Love these cakes. The tower...the queen of hearts...the sandworm. Dune was the first sci-fi book I ever read and got me turned on to the genre. I read the 1st three but after that they weren't (in my opinion) very good. However, the original Dune might be worth the read! Just so you know about it, just sayin'

July 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKalendi

Actually, the sandworms of Arakkis (DUNE) are more god-like to the Fremen (the native people of Arakkis) than they are villians. The sandworms are misunderstood by the Harkonnen and Atreides clans (as well as the Emperor of the known Universe) and are essentially left alone, as the beasts can become huge. But within the mythology of the Fremen, the sandworms are "Shai-Hulud" beasts that are worshipped and respected). The sandworms create the Spice which is used by many different guild factions within the DUNE universe, and are essential for space travel.

So no, not a villian. :) More a god in disguise.

July 16, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterlaura

I was lucky enough to be at the con where that Storm Trooper cake was served (though I didn't want to wait in line to taste it)! I grabbed the baker's card to keep on hand for when I get married. :D

July 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLaura B.

Just throwing this out there. If you read the post, she says she is going to take a break from the villains to show the Stargate cake because it's awesome. Read it again. She wasn't implying that Teal'c is a villain. Hate when people correct things when they obviously didn't read the post.
