Sunday Sweets: Villain Edition!
July 15, 2012 San Diego Comic-Con is going on right now, but tragically I'm not there, which means I've been obsessively checking my Twitter feed all weekend so I don't miss anything. (It's not easy living vicariously through blurry twitpics of celebrities and great cosplay [and sometimes celebrities IN great cosplay] - but by golly, I'm trying.)
So since I've got major geekery on the brain anyway, I thought I'd focus today's Sweets on - what else? Geek cakes. But more than that, I've decided to feature geeky villain cakes. 'Cuz geeky villains are cool. (It's the outfits, am I right?)

I am deeply ashamed to admit that I've never read Dune, but I'm going to assume the giant sandworms fall more on the "villain" side of the spectrum:

I have to take a quick break from the villains to show you the best Stargate cake I've ever seen:
WOWZA. Look at all that detail on the gate! And the watery texture on the event horizon! Seriously, this cake is encoding and locking ALL my chevrons, IF ya know whatta mean. (Stargate humor. Heh. Aheh. Heh.)

Vader!! Shiny, shiny Vader. Seriously, I have my own Vader helmet at home (don't ask), and it's not half as shiny as this cake. I think this cakes looks better, too. Seriously amazing.
Of course, we can't have Vader (or at least his helmet) without an official Storm Trooper escort:

These were really amazing cakes. My favorite is the Queen of Hearts. It looks like it was made of porcelain. I kept doing double takes. Incredible.

I most certainly did read this post. I even read where she wrote, "Back to the bad guys." However, Teal'c is still included on a post about villains. Which, he obviously never should have been included on.
I must recommend reading the first Dune book - it's heavy slogging sometimes, but it's a fully realized universe and well worth the read. And has the best named side kick/second in command ever: Duncan Idaho. Sandworms and Spice, matrilinial accession, time folding, etc, etc,. Seriously, required reading. Beyond the first book, though, lies chaos.
That Queen of Hearts is a work of art.
Those are awesome. I didn't even realize that Storm Trooper was a cake until I scrolled down. And Darth Vader is so shiny.

As others have said, sandworms are just animals. You can't stand on top like that, though -- you'd end up on the sand when the worm gets going and the wind comes up. You have to take a hook and grab one of the scales and stay there as long as you can as well as using your hook to make it go where you want it to.
OMG thank you for introducing me to Nerdache cakes. I am now getting NOTHING done. That girl is AMAZING!

The codpiece area was a base layer of crisp rice treats since it molds well, covered in about a 2 inch thick layer of royal icing and fondant. Say what your will about armor over a small package. I ended up waiting for a generous slice of rice treat calf myself. That bakery did a fantastic job.
On Vader's helmet, you can make fondant shiny with an edible spray lacquer or by applying steam on the surface. You can see the latter technique used on Cake Boss.

If it's any encouragement, it took me two or three tries to get all the way through the first Dune book. But you like many, many of the same books I do... I saw your post the other day :-)... and you'd probably like Dune. Or at least, you'll like having read Dune. Or you might like Dune.

Those are all wonderful art, but why on earth would you want to go to all that trouble creating something so cool only to be eaten?
Jenn, how can you call yourself a geek and NOT have read Dune? I always thought of the sandworms as "forces of nature"; both dangerous and beneficial. You should at least read the first novel of the series, "Dune". I found it a difficult book to start reading, with many "wheels within wheels". I had to start it 3 times to finally get through it. That was when I discovered the glossary in back. Go ahead, read it. You might be intrigued enough to read more of the series. Or not. Some of the prequels written by Herbert's son are pretty good.
You would not believe my amazement when I saw the eye of Sauron in cake form, I'm an absolute freak when it comes to the lord of the rinds! I twas amazingly and terrifyingly accurate, not to mention the tower and the wring base. Imagine all of the hard work that goes in to making one of these things. I struggle trying to frost and decorate a simple cupcake without it falling apart or smudging terribly. I love bakers and their knack for decorating, it's simply amazing.

Codpiece was cake, not krispy. Only krispy we used was the bottom of the head and from the knees down. One couple in line REALLY wanted the crotch so I gave it to them :)

Wh...wow. I just discovered this ca... ehm... this site today, and I already think I"ll stick with it. For a looong,looong,loong time. I drooled at all cakes, but what won me was the Dalek cake (and the joke cracked me up).

The queen of hearts looks so amazing and classy, but I think she peed...then I realized that was a continuation of her beautifully itricate dress.
When I saw the Predator <3 Alien cake I thought of one of the "How It Should Have Ended" (HISHE) videos on YouTube or howitshouldhaveended.com. :-) I think the gold thing under the Queen Of Hearts is a base for support
