What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: A Salute To All Nations, But Really Just America

You guys, we've only got a few days left to whip up some patriotic Sweets for the Fourth of July!

But don't worry; you can totally make this:

By Cake Central member CakeADoodle

Er...right?

I mean, just whip up a three-tiered cake, and then hand cut all that little bunting and stars and stripes, and then sculpt a cute little Uncle Sam, and you're golden!

Or, if you're more of a cupcake kinda gal:

By Cakes by Jyl

I like the springy bits shooting out of the candle.

Also, for future reference: when I say I'll just have one cupcake, this is the size I'm talking about.

Here's a rockin' abstract design:

By JessiCakes

I'm digging those fireworks bursts - they remind me of all the cool retro styles from the 50s.

And check out the adorable ribbon bow and curly Q top spray on this one!

By My Cake School

If cookies are your thing, then you're going flip for these perfectly piped firework cookies:

By Sweet SugarBelle

(Hit the link for a how-to!)

I couldn't find a Declaration of Independence cake, but I like the aged "parchment" scrap on this one:

By M-I-Reilly

 Pretty roses, too!

It's always a treat to see mostly fondant-free Sweets with icing this smooth and corners this sharp:

By Cake Central member Krystina418

Simply gorgeous. And don't you love that font for the USA?

If you can't decide between cake and cookies, here's an idea: put your cookies on your cake!

By CC member GeminiRJ

What a great idea! Cookies are a much tastier alternative to fondant accents, too.

I just realized this next one is the only sculpted cake in today's post:

By CC member Connie1027

So hats off to you, Connie!

This final Sweet was made for the Fourth, but it'd also work beautifully for Memorial Day. It incorporates WWII recruitment posters printed in edible ink, one for each branch. I'm not usually a fan of edible images, but this time it really works:

By LuLu's Sweet Art

I love the ribbon and classic stars and stripes bunting, too.

Have a wonderful Fourth, my fellow Americans! And happy Canada Day, Canadians! And to everyone else: I hope you enjoyed the parade of red, white, and blue. :)

[Editor's note on Canada day- Hi guys! Here's an interesting back story for our little cake site. When we miss doing Sweets for a serious American holiday like Memorial Day, we get loads of angry email and people tell us we suck. And because we were so beaten up over that, we totally forgot about Canada Day. Which stinks. Luckily, you guys are awesome and exceptionally forgiving which is amazing. It's probably why Jen and I want to move to Ottawa so much. That and the poutine. So please accept our apologies and have a Happy Canada Day! -john (We now return you to Peachkins comment)]

Love all of these cakes. The fireworks cookies are adorable. It's nice to see a proper way to decorate a cake using cookies. Keep in mind, there is a wrong way:

Happy (almost) 4th of July! :)

Shout out Sam Eagle!!

Love Sam Eagle! Great title for today's post!

Wow, I'm actually tearing up a bit. I guess I'm a bit patriotic sometimes,or I really like good cakes. The parchment is realy cool.

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterdoodlebug

Once and only once I watched Martha Stewart. She was showing how to make checkerboard cookies. She sounded exactly like that first post. The only difference is that SHE was serious.

And Happy Fourth of July to y'all.

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterOldish Lady

Happy CANADA Day!

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTrish

Happy Canada Day to all. Happy Independence day when it comes time as well. Would have been nice to see maybe just one Canada cake, but perhaps they were difficult to find.

Cheers!

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKara

Happy Canada Day everyone!

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPaula

@TRISH - yeah, exactly! Happy Canada Day! I'll wish the American half of me Happy Fourth of July on the fourth of July...

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMe

Happy Canada Day!

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMelissa

Oh, come on. It's Canada Day and you post Independence Day cakes? You could easily have done Independence Day cakes on Independence Day. You do have lots of Canadian fans, you know.
Oh well -the cakes were still quite nice!
Happy Canada Day!

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMM

The last one would be a wonderful cake for Veterans Day too. Those are all fabulous and a nice tribute to the 4th.

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterev

HAPPY CANADA DAY!!!!!!! :)
Not liking the fact that you guys are posting 4th of July cakes on Canada Day. Not cool.
cute cakes though

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterShannon

Great post for the Sunday before Independence Day, Jen. Which also happens to be Canada Day.

Think I'll head on over to the Bunker. Hot dogs, apple pie, and of course, maple leaf cookies. Eh.

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

To those complaining about Independence Day cakes on Canada Day: today is Sunday. Sunday is for Sunday Sweets, the rest of the week is for wrecks. That includes Wednesday, actual Independence Day. So it was either do the Independence Day cakes today, do them next week *after* the holiday had passed, screw up the same format the blog has been used for years, or skip Independence Day entirely.

Also, the author is American. And it's not like she dissed Canada anywhere.

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

Seriously? No Canada cakes? Its Canada day, you could have at least stuck one in there :'(.

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTenille

I'm in the "Probably could have had at least one Canada cake today, was disappointed when the page loaded, fourth of July is days away... ect" boat, so happy Canada Day! and Happy Fourth of July when it arrives, the cakes are rly well done, wish I had that talent.

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDez

The cakes are lovely, but the Muppet Vision reference truly made my day!

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCatherine

Love the post! Hate the grumbling about Canada Day. Sounds like someone needs a little sugar. Hopefully these adorable Canada Day cupcakes from pie with sparkles will ease some of the international relations tension displayed here. : ) Check them out at:

Have a sweet Red White and Blue Day no matter where you hail from!

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDeborah Stauch

Hi, Jen & John (the hero of Jen)!
(waves cheerily)

Love you lots (in a non-creepy way).

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

Aw, I was hoping for some *good* maple leaves today!

Gorgeous cakes though, my dual-citizen kids will love them. :-)

Here in Ontario cottage country, we have a lot of US vacationers this time of year, so there are american flags and canadian flags all over the place this weekend. Which is funny, because the area is also FULL of war-of-1812 bicentennial celebrations this summer (we won, donchaknow?)

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKate

I'm loving these cakes, especially the cookie cake with the perfectly painted cookies, those awesome rockets on the hat cake and the armed forces cake. I'm also loving the little picnic set up in the background of the first cake. Happy Canada Day to everyone as well. Make some room in the bunker for me, Craig, and turn on the DVD player. I'm bringing along some Red Green for entertainment.

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered Commenternormajean

Also, I clicked on the link to that last cake to see if there were more pictures of the other posters. Unfortunately, there weren't, but I found this amazing cake: http://cakecentral.com/gallery/1607213/lifes-a-bowl-of-cherries
I love the little mice in the bowl of cherries and the blue piping is exquisite!

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered Commenternormajean

I think it's darn sweet of our intrepid Wreckie bloggers to mention Canada Day at all, considering that they are American and have had at least two Canada Day posts in the past (as well as some other Canadian-themed blogs). Do Welsh people come around and give them hell for ignoring March 1st? Don't embarrass me, my beloved fellow-Canucks. We're better than this. A very happy Canada Day to all of you and a pleasant Sunday to everyone else.

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPersephone

Yesterday was also Armed Forces Day in the UK. Couldn't find a cake from this year but here's one from last year.

Cute patriotism-Love the last cake, and the cake with cookies :D

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

OMG, that 3rd cake! I just sat and stared at it for, like 5 minutes.

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKhymera

Seriously? The whiny Americans aren't bad enough? Now we have whiny Canadians? I didn't even know there were such a thing. You people always seem so easy-going. Now where am I going to fantasize about moving to? As to the cakes - awesome as always! I'm left wondering the same thing I always do on Sundays: Can those be real cakes?

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRPainter

Love the Sam the Eagle reference!
For the record, if you were a Canadian blogger, based out of Canada, I would expect Canadian cakes, because today is the for Canadians to be grumpy, apparently.
This being America and all, I love the Sweet sweets today! They help me get in the mood. Somehow it's a July and it feels like it should only be May.

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAnne

Any chance of doing a Canada Day Sweets next Sunday to make up for missing it today? Pretty please!!

We Canadians love cake too! ;)

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCeleste

Gorgeous goodies today, but am I the only one who thinks the fireworks bursts on Cake #3 look like smooshed spiders? (And if so, what does that say about me...)

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDegera

I have to say, I got a little scared when I saw referrals to my blog from Cake Wrecks... Cause I love your site (and books!), but hope I never get featured as a "wreck"!! Thanks to Deborah Stauch for posting a link to my Beaver Cupcakes. I'm glad you enjoyed them!! Happy Canada Day!! :D

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEmilyD

Hmmm.. All of these totally just make me think of Captain America. I have the urge to watch Avengers again!!

Also, I wonder how many Canadian websites remember all of the American holidays? :P

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJabby

Fer cryin out loud, people, really? You're really gonna be all rude over Canada Day cakes? I'll admit I expected to see a mix of Canada Day and Independence Day, even submitted one for Canada Day - and I'm an American! But srsly... sheesh...

Happy Canada Day to those of you Up North, enjoy your day off tomorrow.

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterWendy

Dare I ask out loud-
what happened to Haiku Joy?
(It's loud in my head)

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkatie

I don't know what you Canadians are complaining about. It's my birthday today, and I wanted to see some amazing birthday cakes instead of a bunch of Fourth of July stuff. This time of year is always so all about America and not nearly enough about me. ;-)

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAnita

Beautiful! But....today is Canada Day - where are the Canada sweets??? I feel unloved....

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAmber

So, uh, whilst you guys are all either hiding in or bombarding the bunker, I'll throw this out.

Anyone else notice how the Uncle Sam in sweet #1 resembles the Burl Ives snowman from Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer? Love.

Happy Holidays to you all!

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterannie

Well said @Persephone !

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCynthia

Theardare is pestering me to take the Manilow songbook out of the safe. I may have to relent...

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

I laughed at the Muppet Vision quote so hard it was quite awhile before I got around to looking at the fabulouos cakes!! Thanks for the giggles!

July 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMinde Brisco

Dear Amazing Jen and John (the awesome hubby of Jen):

Thank you for making me smile every single day with your blog, AND showing me all sorts of cool stuff over on Epbot. Please ignore the whiny and selfish "why didn't you have _____" comments.

That is all.

July 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDiana

We're sorry you forgot Canada Day. D:

July 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBea

And now for a post that's *gasp* actually about cakes, instead of what day the cakes were supposedly-erroneously posted on.

That little Uncle Sam on the first cake is totally adorable! He reminds me of the snowman narrator from Rudolph! All of these cakes are beautiful in their own right, but I really love the cookie-decorated one. Great idea!! (unfortunately one that I myself would not be able to pull off)

July 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

@katie, I've wondered the same! Haiku Joy, please come back! We miss you!

(In the case that you're taking a sabbatical from the internet, enjoy your vacations!)

July 2, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterthe other katie

Great title for this post...I love Sam the Eagle...best quote in the whole show!

July 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterArianna

That's it, I'm totally deleting my bookmarks for this site now since you ignored Canada Day!

:)
Hey as a Canadian I love my country, and would love to have seen a cake featured for it especially since Sunday WAS Canada Day, but I also totally understand that John & Jen would probably have been lynched/hung/drawn & quartered for not featuring Independence Day cakes. And I'd much rather see them healthy and whole and continuing on with giving us great stuff to enjoy :)

July 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAnnette

"It's a glorious 3-hour finale"

"You've got a minute and a half!"

*GASP*

July 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPatti

Really, people. What the hell? I am trying to imagine myself getting torqed up because a Canadian site did not celebrate the 4th. Nothing. Really more upset about Joy. She isn't Canadian is she? Gads.

July 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKatie

Tell me you noticed those ADORABLE mini hamburgers in the background of the first cake picture. It looks like there may be a hot dog there, too and...Gasp......a mini plate of star cookies????
