The King Coup

Happy Fat Tuesday, everyone!
Or, as John and I call it, FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT'S HOLY JUST DON'T TALK ABOUT KING CAKES.
Yep, per our new household tradition, all King cakes and other deep-fried donuts are strictly off limits.
And just to be safe, Queen cakes are getting the boot, too.
Plus drawing on cakes with magic markers.
(The walls of your bedrooms are still fine, though, kids.)
Jokers, however, are perfectly acceptable.
Ahh, Mr. Seymore Buttz, you never fail to amuse.
Fortunately, most bakeries know they can just throw a few plastic beads and carrot-less jockeys onto pretty much anything and people will buy it, thereby enabling a blissfully King-cake-free holiday.
I hear the fun part is watching beads come out of your 3-year-old.
This next one is so sad I actually had two separate wreckporters submit photos of it:
And if that doesn't capture the spirit of exuberant revelry, nothing will.
Also, John says he's pretty sure that cake is deep-fried.
And finally, did you know that Mardi Gras was actually first celebrated in Boston?
They'd swap Boston Cream King Pies and brag about who had the best foliage.
It's true! I checked Wikipedia and everything.
Thanks to Sylvia F., Kelli W., Patty S., Kati C., Bunny G., and Eleanor B. for the wicked awesome history lesson.

@ mel tip of the hat to you, sir! well played
Four times in the last month I have put a “King Cake” box mix (complete with colored sugars and plastic baby) into my shopping cart to send to J&J. Four. (sigh) this stoopid “being nicer” resolve rears its ugly head at the worst times.
Next year, anyone wants one and I’ll send it to them. :)
My daughter decided that the odd green things looked like sad trees - trees sad because of being polluted with plastic Mardi Gras beads. Such insight from a 10 year old!
Let's be honest, I was going to yell "KING CAKES" no matter what you posted today and dive for the bunker!
Well that's double the sadness for that poor CCC. Lol have never had a King cake but would love to try one as long as I wasn't the one to get the baby and accidentally break a tooth on it. Cannot wait for the Easter lamb catastrophes to start showing up lol.
Gotta say, I was half relieved to see only 50+ posts this late at night, and kinda sad... There was so much fun and festivities and learning that went on last year, I was hoping we could do it all again!!
What would holidays be without a major dust-up over how certain dishes are made, who comes from where and who gives a fig. It's like a tradition or something.
By the way, I think 'Deep-Fried Thoughts' is one of the best ripostes in the history of comebacks.
The EPCOT that preceded it is all the more hilarious -- in hindsight -- for running directly counter to the imagery of 'let the good times roll' and 'the Big Easy' that many people (but not me, of course) associate with this particular time of year.
This really explains something for me--as a religious, I expect King Cake on the Feast of the Epiphany. I didn't know bakeries associated it with Mardi Gras. I don't know why bakers associate it with Mardi Gras. What am I missing? :-)
Look at us, a year later and still alive. I'm with all the others who said that it seems like only yesterday we were in the midst of an all-out war.
We seem to have emerged slightly brighter, because I have yet to read the exact same comment slightly reworded from 50 different people. It was after that post that I vowed to never again click on "Notify me of follow-up comments via e-mail."
Man, I could go for some ethic food... What's the difference between Creole and Cajun again?
Sorry, I may be suffering from PTSD after my 187 e-mail alerts last year. Also, I now want an "I survived King Cake EPCOT '11!" shirts and commemorative keychains.
*tilts head* Is it just me, or does the Mardi Gras mask cake look suspiciously like a recycled Valentines' day heart cookie?
Madi Gras in Boston LOLOLOLOL
In the UK they call Shrove Tuesday "Pancake Day" and everyone makes pancakes. Which are reportedly more like crepes than American pancakes, but either one sounds like a vast improvement over King Cake.
Is it just me or is the really really sad one also a CCC?
I just can't top that haiku from 2 years ago. I just can't.
