I don't actually have a piping bag, but Pinterest tells me I can make snowflakes with glitter and a glue gun. It's basically the same thing, right?
But back to the splendor of winter:

Just imagine the snowflakes gently falling, the poinsettias fragrantly blooming ... wait, do poinsettias actually have a smell?

Whabam! I like how the beaded garland is just a bit skewed; it keeps the cake looking playful instead of too perfectly perfect.

Why do people feel the need to add flotsom (in this case a bird and some flowers) to an otherwise stunning cake? Take the flotsom off and let the cake speak for itself (which it does beautifully).
I wanted to have a December wedding, but hubby was worried about the weather - what if it snowed and no one would show up? :rolleyes These cakes remind me why I wanted a December wedding.

Sometimes I regret that choice of June, back in '68 (never the wedding itself, nor the groom, though)... But then I realize this sort of decorating wasn't "done" then, so I still wouldn't have had a cake like these, anyway. *sigh*

We had a December wedding -- back in the day when cakes weren't this spectacular (but mine was 100% chocolate, so there!) My florist did a 12-foot Christmas tree decorated with 500 red roses, baby's breath, wide red velvet ribbons and wide lace, and hundreds of white twinkle lights. Then, after a 68 degree day, it snowed 17 inches that night (Hello, Boulder.) That's why, although every cake here is spectacular, I LOVE the white cake with the roses and evergreen -- it reminds me of my wedding tree and lots of snow.
My sister is getting married this afternoon. I still think she's crazy for getting married two days before Christmas, but I have to admit, the decorations are stunning.
Is it just me or is the second cake from the bottom modelled after a scarlett o'hara outfit?

I'm hoping the pine cones on the first one are edible- I'm ABSOLUTELY certain the pine straw is chocolate covered spaghettini...(don't tell me otherwise!)

@Sharyn ~ That tree sounds amazing! I'm in Western WA so you get the snow, we get the rain... although we may have a white Christmas this year...
from the start, my mouth was agape. (then i looked and saw that first one is from none other than martha herself -- well, it SHOULD be spectactular! it's martha friggin' stewart!) many gorgeous ones here -- something about an all-white cake really gets me (in a good way). also love the little bit of fairisle and chevron in the fun tiered cake.

@SaraV -- the best part was she did it at cost (she's a friend) as our wedding present, or I could NEVER have afforded it. And, since it didn't fit in our townhome, we flagged down a passing lady with a sled and a bunch of kids and gave it to her. She and the kids were so excited, it made our Christmas.
I love that I've been reading Cakewrecks long enough that I can now distinguish the writers (usually) before reading who wrote it at the end. I love Lindsey's style!
Oh, these are stunning, and make me wish that our New Years Eve wedding was large enough to justify one of these gorgeous confections, but we only had ourselves and ten guests. Still, with everyone in red, white or black (or a combination of the three) and my SIL's gorgeous tree in the background (we got married at her place) we had the most amazing, intimate ceremony and celebration. Winter weddings rock!
Okay, houndstooth on a cake, AND pom poms!!!!!! How perfect is that?! What an ideal winter cake. Oh how I wish I could have a do over (just for the cake, of course!) Houndstooth is my new favorite cake decor and yes, Jen, it does need to be made into a sweater. Desperately.
Also, those tiny little icicles hanging off the edges of the tiers on the last cake? Too cute!

What is that topper supposed to be on the knitted reindeer sweater cake? it kinda looks like a man kissing a half human/half reindeer mystical beast?
@Hilary: It looks to me like it's meant for a same-sex wedding. It's two men.
My second favorite (gingerbread men is the number-one favorite) is the fourth cake down. I just love the red and white color scheme! And that lazy ribbon flowing down the side!
That is a lovely cake topper, now that I realize the part extending from the figure on the right is a scarf and not an incredibly awkward arm. But that red one is quilted and makes me shiver (delightfully)!

I thought the sweater cake topper was a guy kissing a sheep on its hind legs. Wondered where that wedding was legal. But otherwise a very cool looking cake

Are you sure the kissing topper for a same sex wedding? I think the taller one (without the scarf) has a hair bun. Not that guys can't have long locks - my Mr. Haiku is leonine - but now it's a puzzle I'm trying to . . . puzzle out.
You know, I was looking at these cakes and suddenley realized OH MY GOD TOMORROW IS CHRISTMAS EVE!!!!!!!!!! Dang, I'm stressed.
The last one looks like a teetering stack of toilet paper. Granted, very pretty toilet paper. But I can't not see it.
#1 I'm pretty sure those are chocolate-covered pine needles. Euell Gibbons was right; many parts of a pine tree are edible. Just be sure to use lots of chocolate. [Bwahahaha]
To me the topper looks like a male on the left and a female, leaning over, to the right- and I think they're holding snowballs behind their backs. Her scarf is hanging down and his hat is topped with a pom pom.
I'm wondering if the last one is for a second wedding, with the old looking wedding picture next to it. Which of course would just make it sweeter.
Also, the sweater cake topper 'tails' I believe are their hands clasped behind their backs.
I'm glad other people saw people with tails. I am dying to know what in the world that topper actually represents.
These are some beautiful cakes! Love the Martha Stewart one, and the one below it is really pretty, too. Makes me happy I had a winter wedding with bridesmaids in velvet sheaths!
I also thought "Pom-poms and houndstooth!" There are other cakes I found more to my usual taste, but I just loved those details.
Also, regarding the gay/leonine/sheep cake topper, I think they have their hands clasped behind their backs, not tails. Maybe?

Yup I see toilet paper and gold edges on them too. Now I can't unsee it.
#9 I see a man and a woman -- both dressed in winter garb that trades the ability to move for comparative warmth. (At least when you are bowled over by anything from marauding kids to a light breeze, there is no chance of harm -- you just can't get up again without a team of assistants.) The woman is wearing a scarf.
*Not that I'm against cold weather or anything -- so long as I can have the thermostat set to 78 and don't have to go anywhere until there's at least an hour of daylight after lunch, I don't really care how cold it gets outside.
My hubby and I celebrated our 12th wedding anniversary on 12/23! It was a magnificent day, complete with snow...something that doesn't usually happen here in St. Louis (like this year...no snow). Our cake was reminiscent of the cake at the end of White Christmas...complete with candles! The guests who came are the people I most wanted to share the day with anyway, so it was just perfect.
@Elizabeth, I hope your sister had a beautiful day and I wish them many years of happiness!
