What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Wedding Cakes in Chocolate

Hey girl.
Today's post is dedicated to you.

By I Dream of Jeanne Cakes

That's right, to you and every other chocolate-loving chocoholic out there who can't quit craving the sweet stuff and have long since polished off the last 3 Musketeers bar in your kids' Halloween candy stash.

You know who you are.

So come along. Let's take a ride on the gentle waves of chocolate's sweet caress:

By Sweet Gems Cakes

Let's set sail on the decadent seas of sensory seduction.

Submitted by Debbie C. via Style Me Pretty. Photography by Julie Mikos; baker unknown.

Smell the chocolate. Feeeeel the chocolate. Taste the chocolate. BE the chocolate.

Let chocolate's smooth tendrils of tantalization entwine you.

By Layers

Embrace the chocolate! Let its sweet siren song wash over you and take you to a place where a rose is just a rose, unless it's a chocolate rose...

By Baking Arts

Because then it's like, a way better rose.

Unless of course, it's a painted chocolate rose. With ruffles. And twirly things.

By The Paul Bradford Sugarcraft School

Twirly things of temptation!

So surrender! Surrender to chocolate's rich and creamy charms!

Let the fermented bean pods of the cacao tree seep into your soul as you... um... wait.

By Cakes by Occasion

OK, so maybe that's not the sexiest description of chocolate you've ever heard. Sorry.
I'm running out of adjectives here.

Bottom line, chocolate is pretty much perfection.

By Wilton

Like this cake. Such perfection, I'm having trouble believing it's real. Look at those razor sharp corners!

And the only way this curvacious cake could be better is if there were even more of it:

Sub'd by Mary G. and made by Premier Pastry

I can't spot a single thing wrong here, either:

By The Pastry Studio

I'm just dotty for it! (The kids still say 'dotty,' right?)
(No? Well, I'm not very hip. My pajamas have cats on them.)

Of course, sometimes even the most fervent chocolate lover needs a break:

By Margaret's French Bakery

Like this. This is the perfect chocolate break.

Who could resist a cake literally paved in chocolate?
I can't. You can't. Don't even try.

Anyway, if you love chocolate so much, why don't you marry it? I think you should.

Sub'd by Jennifer K. and made by Kanya Hunt

If only for the cake.

The only thing wrong with that "dotty" cake is that I don't have a piece of it in front of me!! A totally chocalicious post if I ever shared one (on FB).

Show of hands: who heard the first half of this post entirely in Barry White's voice?

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNaomi

Thank you for making me drool all over my keyboard! Those cakes are unbelievably beautiful. Someone please send ALL of them to me for Christmas!

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDonkaloosa

Naomi, I think I went a little more basic than you. I was hearing Kaa the Snake (Jungle Book, voiced by Sterling Holloway) and his hypnotic "Trust in Me" song through the first part of this.

I can't decide which I like best: the lovely square-tiered cake with chocolate-embroidered white runners down the sides & the most beautiful bow EVER on top, the amazingly folded & pleated confection that doesn't even look like a cake, or the last one with that intricately patterned ivory layer and the brooch on the bottom that I would wear as jewelry. Every cake in this post is a work of art!

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterbmbagain803

The first cake is from I Dream of Jeanne Cakes in Boston, MA; it was in a Real Weddings feature in the Knot magazine a while back....

*Sigh* I just discovered that when I lick the computer monitor it doesn't taste like the cake I'm viewing. (I tried at least twice...) These are spectacular and, yes, I did hear the first part of the post in Barry White's voice. Thanks for reminding me of my own chocolate wedding cake. It wasn't a show stopper like these, but it was beautiful and boy, did it taste good! (And we're still going strong 23 years later -- I can't say for sure it was the cake, but I'm betting it was a contributing factor. Why take the risk? Get a chocolate wedding cake...)

After seeing these, we may want to renew our vows...

Thanks for starting my day with one of my favorite things, Lindsey, and making me want it SO MUCH.

And not a poop swirl in sight. :)

I love the 4th and 5th ones and the last one the most.

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJo

All this chocolate and not one thing that looks like poo? I barely recognized that it was Cake Wrecks!

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCaren

You know me too well. I had several Dove chocolates for breakfast this morning. The only thing better would be these cakes. Mmmm.

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterShauna

Naomi, I was going to say the same thing. Barry White with "Sexy Sax Guy" playing in the background. Then I heardthe needle stop on the record player and the voice became a woman going on and on with much enthusiasm about chocolate.

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTarahCurrie

Totally heard Barry White as I read this! I love every one of these, must go get chocolate for breakfast now.

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAudrey

Hand is up for Barry White! Does it get any better?

After so much indulging this week, I didn't think anything could make me hungry. I was wrong!

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTLC

I totally heard Barry White too! These are all beautiful! The 7th one down is just amazing! I keep going back to look at it, I'm so impressed!
I totally want a chocolate rose!
Just got caught up on the last couple of days posts. I tried to check in over the weekend but it was just so busy, then I broke my foot yesterday at work. Nothing like a broken bone to make you slow down! <sigh>
Hope everyone had a great weekend! I missed you guys!

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJodee in WA

Is it wrong that i didn't even care how pretty they are? I just wanted to bite them. No plate, no cake slice. Just face first into chocolate flipping happiness.

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKellyH

Okay, I'm in love with the 7th one down, the one from Cakes by Occasion, with the swirled sorta-lace-like chocolate wrap... and dare I say it, I'm not even really much a fan of chocolate.

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterOathy

I love the one with the white bow the best. The crispness and cleanness of it is amazing. I have to admit I really like the pine-cone cake stand too. How simple and beautiful.

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLizzyBean

@Jodee in WA: So sorry to hear about the foot. I'd send you one of these cakes if I could! I hope it heals quickly!

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

OMG those are mazing :D omnomnom

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

OOOHH!

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKarenJ

I'm pretty sure those pictures just put me in a diabetic coma. ;)

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermillbrit

tantalization IS A WORD!!!!!! I looked it up! Thanks! Jen, for expanding my vocabulary
Oh, yeah, my hand is up!

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

I'm not a big fan of eating the frosting flowers on most cakes but those chocolate roses on the cake by Baking Arts (the 5th cake down) make me think I'd give them a try - so pretty and so chocolatey!!! and that cake with the gorgeous chocolate swirls by Cakes by Occasion is my favorite - very different and delicate and of course oh so chocolatey too!! yum..

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAddie

I was scrolling along, eyes half closed, grooving to Barry White's voice and drooling over these gorgeous cakes... when the comment "My pajamas have cats on them" popped up and I lost it. I'll be giggling over that all week.

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDegera

I totally heard the post in Barry White's voice too. I have to say, the third cake is my absolute favourite - and I'd totally have it at my wedding...but I need to find a groom first ;) - but they are all gorgeous....and as others have noticed, nary a poop-swirl in sight!

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEmily

So nice to see chocolate confections that don't look like they've come out of the bum-bum. Proof that the colour of chocolate has nothing to do with, *ahem*, crappy cakes - just the skills, or lack thereof, of the baker.

I can imagine the feeling the semi-firm fragile swirls of chocolate from cake #7 breaking between my lips... MMM-mmm.... Swirly, chocolaty bliss.

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNaomi (a Canadian fan)

I was feeling vaguely scandalized that this was sounding like (whispers) "porn" until I got to "BE the chocolate" and totally heard Carl from "Caddy Shack" (aka Mr Bill Murray). Yeah. Like a bucket of ice cold water, I'm tellin' ya.

BTW, I heard Lou Rawls.

Of course, it's all chocolate so I'm a happy woman...of course, I would still have eaten all the turdkeys from last week that were chocolate, too. (hangs head in shame)

@Jodee, hope you mend quickly!!

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

@Sharyn ! Thanks! Any one of these would make it totally worth the big(ger!!!) butt I'm gonna get now that I'm not even supposed to walk! <sigh> Somebody better hide the chocolate from me...quick!

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJodee in WA

The paved chocolate cake reminds me of the ears from a Mickey Mouse ice cream I would get from the ice cream man as a kid. Chocolate ice cream coated with crunchy milk chocolate. I wonder if they still sell those... I'm having a craving!!

November 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJabby

One of my Top 5 Reasons For Getting Married Dressed As A Klingon; it was the perfect (and only) excuse I needed to have the triple chocolate wedding cake I'd always dreamed of! Sweet Mother of Bowie, that was a good cake; everyone enjoyed it so much, I barely managed to save the Anniversary Slice! Of course, I probably would've still gone chocolate even if it'd been a "normal" wedding; white cake and frosting suck AND blow hard as an old vacuum. If I'm spending a fortune on a bloody cake, I want to make sure I ENJOY it, tradtion be damned!

November 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterStorm

*Raises hand* Yep, Barry White voice here too! And "My pajamas have cats on them" = gigglesnort!

November 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLis

OK, that was torture. I'm reading that Monday morning at work. Without any chocolate. Not a spec in sight. It'll be hours before I can get access to any decent chocolate <whimper>

Plus, if you'd posted this before my wedding, I could have had the chocolate wedding cake decorated appropriately (not sweets-worthy, but at least chocolately looking).

November 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAliza

My favorite post ever!! They are all incredibly gorgeous!!

November 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHannah

Is it bad to get divorced and find a new husband so I can get one of these cakes?

November 26, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterchez

This post was callin' my name the whole way. Chocolate ...... mmmmmmmmmmm ...... chocolate .... must go get some chocolate ......

November 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTrudy

AMAZING cakes!!!! I want to eat them all!!! Hugs!

November 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMumzy

wasnt allowed to have any chocolate on my wedding cake. hubbys best man/best friend is deathly allergic to chocolate. DARN IT. i wanted an all chocolate cake

November 28, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterbecky

@ Barbara Anne - I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling hot n steamy over the narration...until the cat's pajam...uhhh, I mean the pajamas with cats part...wait, was that Lindsey's way of slipping in a 'sex kitten' reference? ;-)

And yes, this reminds me of how my wedding cake was *not* chocolate. I *LOVE* chocolate. My sweet sixteen (ok, fourteen) birthday party was 100% CHOCOLATE. Chocolate milk, chocolate cake (a fancy chocolate mousse from a baker in the fancy part of town!), and Rocky Road ice cream. So, naturally, I wanted a chocolate wedding cake. But, my future sis-in-law-law (wife of my hubby's brother) had a cake decorator relative & *everyone* wanted me to get her Italian creme cake. They said it was "to die for!" So, in the interest of future in-law harmony, I did. BUT, I insisted on a chocolate groom's cake, thinking I'd get some that way. *WRONG* Gone in a Flash! :-(

And the Italian creme? It tasted good but didn't "grab" me. Though, everyone else raved about it afterward, including the hotel chef. He asked for the recipe but was refused. (The recipe is a family secret. Funny, they haven't shared it with me either...)

November 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKarateLady

Whoooa! Such awesome cakes! Too bad they're all chocolate....that's waaay too much chocolate for me. I think its only ok to begin with, but the amount of chocolate on those cakes would make me sick.

November 29, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterOhcake

That first cake is sloppy, sorry. Probably delicious, but if you're going to put lines down the side of the cake, they should be both straight and parallel. I wouldn't be happy with that at my wedding. The others are beautiful, though.
