Sunday Sweets: Halloween Treats

Sooo, what are you going to be for Halloween this year?
What's that you say?
You don't KNOW!?
Well, let's fix that problem right now.
How about a ghost?
Submitted by Patti and made by Cakes by Erin
WooooOOOOO!
Spooky and easy! A ghost costume, that is. This cake looks anything but easy with all the tiny spiders and snakes and spooks popping out all over the place.
Or, if scary isn't your thing, you could be an adorable little kitty cat, like this:
Submitted by Carrie C. and made by Wendy's Taarten
Everything about this scene is SO cute. Even the headstones look cheerful. RIP, okie dokie!?
Or, a vintage kitty cat! It's the same thing, only with a trendier name!
This artwork really takes me back. To where, I'm not sure. I can't remember if this was a picture book or a cartoon, but it is SO familiar. Anyone?
Anyway, is your issue that you just can't make up your mind? Witch, pumpkin, skeleton ... what to choose, what to choose...
Submitted by Sarah M. and made by Megan Babuska of Classic Cakes
Hey, why not be all three? A skele-jack-o-witch! A witchin-jack-o-ton! A jack-o-witchy-skels! I don't know. Just be generous with the glitter and you really can't go wrong. (I LOVE the hat, it's like The Sorting Hat goes to a formal occasion).
Dracula is always a classic crowd-pleaser:

And vampires are like, so hip right now. At least the broody teenage variety. (And, hey, you can be generous with the sparkly glitter on those, too!)
Speaking of broody, have you considered being Frankenstein? (I know, I know, don't tell me. Frankenstein was actually the name of the doctor who created the monster. I know. Ninety-nine percent of planet Earth still calls him Frankenstein anyway.)
'Course, the only thing I'm calling is the cops, because there's a monster decapitator in the area! Seriously, this things looks so real, I half expect it to start talking to me. Creee to the pee.
Still undecided? Well, it's not Halloween yet. You've still got time to go over-the-top with your costume. How about an alien Cthulhu!
(Be kind to me; I have no idea what this thing is. After many fruitless attempts to spell it, I finally had to Google "tentacle beard." It is awesome nonetheless. As is any cake with nipples).
And now, a few helpful Halloween tips from me to you:
Don't forget to wear reflective clothing. Don't go out alone. Look both ways. Carry a flashlight.
And don't let anyone jack your candy.
Also, only trick-or-treat at homes you are familiar with. This one looks ok:
This one, I'd probably avoid:
At all costs.
And please, if you must drink,
...drink responsibly.
And most of all...
Have a Very Happy Halloween!

Lolol@witch in cauldron it's awesome :D Love all of this weeks cakes :D
I'm pretty sure that's what you call a Star Spawn of Cthulhu, though it needs some wings. That way it can be big, without being freakin' 'uge enough to crash a steamship into (remorseless spoiler for those who still haven't read the story, published almost 90 years ago).
Very nice Boris Karloff cake, there.
You've never read H.P. Lovecraft? Or am I just not getting what you're saying?
My self-assigned task for the week is to try to work in the phrase "cree to the pee" at the office.
Too bad there wasn't a way to get mini replicas of my favorite cake wrecks! I'd have quite the collection - these are great! Happy Halloween!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At risk of blasphemy, it sort of looks like cthulhu buddha.
Cthulhu is the high priest of the Elder Gods. He comes from stories written by the father of horror science fiction, H.P. Lovecraft. I highly recommend giving him a read if you manage to find the time. H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) based a lot of his stories around New England and is responsible for creating The Necronomicon, and The City of Arkham (from which Arkham Asylum in the Batman Series gets its name).
On the one you thought was so familiar - maybe you are remembering those vintage greeting cards? That's what I thought of when I saw the cake.
Hmm. Why is the bonfire built on top of a hardwood floor and why isn't it also on fire? Hmm. Maybe witches brew bonfires follow different rules.
These are all so superb. Though I think that my favorite is the vintage kitty. I -adore- that hand painting on the sides and the colours are fantastic!
@Alicia I was thinking the same thing! We can blasphemy together.
This year for Halloween I'm a dying glitter fairy. Get it? Instead of flying glitter fairy? I was kinda proud of myself with that one. Anyway, next year I'll have to take your suggestion and go as Cthulu.
If you must drink, don't dive.
I like the Cthulhoid. The face tentacles are caconical.
Wonderful cakes all! I'm especially fond of the black-and-white skeleton one, but props to the Cthulhu cake - it's hard to do an eldritch abomination in a way that (almost) makes it look appetizing! [For some fun Cthulhu viewing, check out the 2005 film Call of Cthulhu, which was made in black and white, and silent, as if made in the '20s when the story was set; see more on the official site, cthulhulives.org. It's a labor of love by fans, and a very good translation of story to screen - and the "making of" commentary is great fun too.]
@Alicia: It does indeed look like a Buddha version of Cthulhu.
Also, Cthulhu is NOT an alien.
all great cakes, but that first one really is a stunner!
Cthulu looks like he's on the toilet.
My favorite has to be the kitty cat. With bonus ghost! It's almost too cute to eat!
Awesome Halloween cakes. LOVE that cauldron cake with the witch, that just cracked me up. And yes, cree to the pee MUST become the next "in" statement.
@khereva: That Cthulhu does have wings, they're just really small.
@Cyberjar: Don't the Old Ones--including Cthulhu--come from across the stars?
So many fun, spooky cakes! I like the three-tiered one with the hat on top. And you're right, it does look like the Sorting Hat all dressed up for a formal occasion. (-:
I love the pumpkins coming out of the chimney! Adorable.
VAMPIRES. DON'T. SPARKLE.
Jen, the vintage kitty cat cake looks to me to be inspired directly from the art of Johanna Parker. Check it out.

Wow great cakes!!! I cant pick a favourite! Though I am with Trista, and will be trying my best to use "cree to the Pee" in a sentence this week!!
Diane
I love Halloween! And I love these cakes! I'll take them all, thank you. Great collection, I must go bake and pretend my cake will be half as awesome as these!
"It is awesome nonetheless. As is any cake with nipples." You know that you will come to regret that statement, right? That is, if you haven't already disproved it somewhere in your archives... I just worry someone will take that as a personal challenge.
The cat in the pumpkin reminds me of Oolong, the cat done by Bonzo's creator, Studdy. But, as another commenter pointed out, it also looks somewhat like the old decorations you used to see on Halloween noisemakers.
The Cthulhu very much resembles the Ood of Dr. Who. Now that would be a creepy cake!
Cthulhu is an alien-he is not of this world. He dwells somewhere in the South Pacific (47°9′S 126°43′W, if you want to be specific) in R'lyeh, imprisoned until "the stars are right", and R'lyeh can rise and he can take over the world (your standard "bad guy" plan).
"That is not dead which can eternal lie; and with strange eons, even death may die".
If you're interested (and can find it), Neil Gaiman had done a wonderful short story called "I, Cthulhu", where Cthulhu explains his origins. And it has a great little ending.
Vintage Cat Cake is adorable. Reminds me a lot of Becky Federico's creations, who does some amazing Beistle-style halloween stuff.
Great cakes, but I'm not sure why Cthulhu has breasts and a navel..is it a mammal? :p
I think the vintage cake design is inspired by the old cardboard cut-out Halloween decorations made by Beistle :

Which I LOVE, and I love that cake!
My birthday is the day before Halloween and I love love LOVE Halloween cakes!!
my very favorite is the house you would avoid at all costs- do you have any idea how freakin' hard it is to do a black/white/silver cake and make it so beautiful?? truly, they end up looking awkward as it's so hard to shade those colors together- you end up with a cake that looks top heavy or dumpy even if it isn't!! (steps off soapbox)
anyone else like the cute, smiling spider on the cauldron cake? I love the "Sorting Hat goes formal" one, too!
I think the spider pushed the witch into her brew. Just look at that smile!
Witchy in the cauldron is a hoot! And cthulu tentacle beards seem to be following me around at the moment - about four different people pointed me to the cthulu tentacle face beanie thing on 'what not to crochet' the other day, even though I'd never expressed an interest in tentacles or beards. I must just look like that sort of person. :/
Thanks so much for highlighting my cake on Sunday Sweets! My chubby Cthulhu does have rudimentary wings, but they're very small.
-Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!
Love love love all of these wonderful sweets! My favorite is the cute kitten with cheerful tombstones "RIP, okie dokie!?" LOL
And that last one is amazing! I love topsy-turvy cakes (done right, that is)
Vintage kitty is awesome. And Frankenstein's head is for sure Creee to the Pee! I almost pee'd myself when I read that!
Spooktacular Sweets! Thanks! And a Happy Halloween to the whole CW family!
I do like the smiling spider on the cauldron with the witch.
Also, I think that's an Ood Cthulu. Just my opinion.
That first one has got to be one of the most amazing cakes I've ever seen in my life!!! Seriously amazing!!
You may be familiar with the vintage kitty because Martha Stewart did a segment on vintage Halloween collectibles a few years ago. It's very much in the style of 1920's and 1930's decorations, to which many Johanna Parker designs pay tribute. It's not preciisely in the style of the Biestle vintage decorations, but hails from the same period.
Did anyone else see at cake 9 see that the ghost is actually floating (far right).......Cree to the pee....
That last one is gorgeous!
LOL! I'm just glad I'm not the only one who thought it looked like Cthulhu was on the toilet!
Thanks for posting my cake, it is the second one. The cute one with the kittycat.
I'm shocked that an astute steampunk lover like yourself would be unfamiliar with Cthulu. Put Lovecraft on your rainy day reading list; your efforts will be well repaid!
Huge fan of your site; the Sunday Sweets always make me smile.
The vintage cake reminds me of the vintage disney Halloween cartoons!! :)
Like this one:

Felix the Cat cartoons. That's what you were trying to think of. Dead ringer there.
I Cthulhu
Serendipity! I just checked a friend's twitter and he has a link to a download of another Cthulhu story!

The artwork on Cake 3 is very reminiscent of the Beistle Company's die cut Halloween decorations from the 1970s. (Are you even old enough to remember those?!?) The cats and the owl in particular looks like variations of the style. This blog has a number of pictures of the old school decorations that match the theme of the cake. Enjoy!
The Vintage Kitty is based on the Halloween decorations I remember from the dime store about 1950. They were not just cardboard cutouts. There were all sorts of metal items. I have a noisemaker shaped like a small frying pan (about 5" across) that has that cat on it. On eBay I find several similar noisemakers. They call them "Kirchof" so I suppose that is the name of the company. Anyway, they are great designs. If not really frightening, the cats, etc. look distinctly lunatic!
