Sunday Sweets: Getting Crafty

Today on Sunday Sweets we are exploring the world of crafty cakes. And when I say "crafty," I don't mean like "Hey, that is some serious cake craftsmanship!" I mean actual crafts. With yarn and stuff. Woo!

That's not to say that this caliber of crafty cakes doesn't require craftsmanship as well. I mean, you are looking at a pair of edible scissors!
(Note to kids: please do not attempt to eat any household scissors.)
I should also warn you not to eat crayons either, as my son once had to have a chunk of crayon surgically removed from his lung, true story. But cake crayons? Now that's a cake of a different color! Har.

I could totally make this cake. Except for the paintbrushes, tubes of paint, exquisitely detailed painter's case and palette. But the blobs of paint, yeah, I could totally do those.
And now, please hold on to your socks, because they are about to be knocked off:
Hey, check for holes while you're down there holding your socks, because I wouldn't be surprised if this thing could fix them, it looks that authentic.

Sew AMAZING! Prize-winning ribbons are just piling up around this cake left and right!
Submitted by Sarah M. and made by The Sugar Syndicate
I hope Rita enthusiastically high-fived whoever made her this amazing cake, and then told them appreciatively that the "embroidered" name was an extra-clever touch.
Have you noticed that ruffles are slowly overtaking the world? I've seen them on shower curtains, pillows, headbands, diaper pails, birthday cards – you name it, some crafter has ruffled it. So why should cakes be left out of the fun?
They shouldn't!
Simply beautiful.
And I'm quite sure that this perfectly pleated cake is prettier than my entire wedding dress.
But not all crafts equal ruffles and buttons and flowers, no! Sometimes crafting has an edge to it. Yeah, that's right. Real dangerous stuff. Stuff like ...
broken glass!

Spotted at the 2010 Boston Flower and Garden Show; baker unknown.
Like a mosaic! On a cake! What a brilliant combination. Say it out loud: "Mosaic Cake!" It's like it was always meant to be, much like my favorite snack, peanut butter and butter. Don't judge.
Or how about this Mondrian-inspired work of edible art?
Submitted by Vanessa M. and made by Colette's Cakes
Or this stained-glass masterpiece:

I don't think I would have the heart to eat this. That would be like going up to Da Vinci and being like "Hey man, great job on this Mona Lisa. Really beautiful. Mind if I lick it?"
Well, that's all for now! See you next time, and don't run with the scissors!

OMG those are amazing-they are almost too pretty to eat D:
My God, the *embroidery floss* is fondant.
The best cake ever.
Well, actually, it *and* the Crayola cake with the cute little lady wearing little awesome boots.
These are gorgeous! I love all the craft cakes, but the ruffly quilted one and the wedding pleated one....wow!
Lindsey, I just have to say, that peanut butter and butter sandwiches were my very favorite food growing up. My only judgment is that you rock, my friend!
I think if I ever manage to rope someone into marrying me I'll want a stained-glass wedding cake :D
I actually and involuntarily gasped when I saw the last cake. Un-be-frickin-lievable. It is, indeed, a work of art.
All of these cakes are great, though; I love the yarn basket with that wonderful yarn texture, and the Singer machine like my grandmother's, and, well...all of them.
I'm still trying to get past the first cake -- how did the baker make the yarn look so real?
Awesome cakes and great commentary! As soon as I saw the comment about your son inhaling a crayon I thought, "I bet this is a Better After guest post!" Doesn't that make you proud?
My mom crocheted all her life and her name was Margaret. Was a special treat to see that first cake with the yarn and her name, on this the 19th anniversary of the day she passed away. Beautiful remembrance for me.
All of the cakes are wonderful, but the sewing themed ones are truly outstanding.
I would sooner destroy a stained glass window than a cake like that.
stain glass and that sewing machine!!
Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!!! With the obvious amount of time required for these stunners, are the cakes even edible once one has the heart to cut into them? Or are they rather stale?
Ooooooohhhhhh!!! Aaaaaaahhhhhh!!!
The crayons! The baskets! *The Singer*!! **THE MOSAIC CAKE**!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think I may have lost my jaw, please excuse me while I hunt on the floor for it... ;)

OMWORD!!!!!! Those are amazing and awsome!
Uh...um...I am speechless. Those are amazing cakes, top to bottom; I am in awe! I usually will show at least one or two of the Sunday sweets cakes to my husband and family, but I wanted to show them all of today's cakes. (And are any of my family here to look at them while I am bubbling over with excitement about showing them? No, of course not. Sigh...)
I thought I was the only one that liked peanut butter and butter sandwiches....Glad to know I'm not that weird after all. :)
My husband always has thought I was strange for putting butter on my peanut butter sandwiches! Glad to know there are others out there.
These cakes are all amazing though I wonder how much actual "cake" is in some of them. Blows my ,mind to think of all the time put into some of these.
Fear not, my fellow friends. I, too, ate (and still eat) peanut butter and butter sandwiches. I always thought my grandpa and I were the only ones. But it seems like the awesomness is well spread! ;)
I was reading this on my RSS reader, and didn't realize which blog had come up, and assumed it was a different one when I saw the first photo and was just trying to figure out how they got the yarn to stay like that.
The stained glass cake is absolutely incredible!
i had to stop and really check it out, b/c that singer sewing machine is incredible! it looks just like the one i inherited from my grandmother. and then i continued to scroll down... that stained glass cake at the end!!! omg... that is truly amazing. i agree, i don't know that i'd have the heart to eat that. (but then, how would you actually preserve it? wouldn't it get a little.... gross... after a while?)
thanks as always...
Oh my holy moly. Such awesomeness!
While the cakes are gorgeous, and as a crafter I truly appreciate them, I have to say that the line about licking the Mona Lisa actually made me laugh out loud. :-D
Nice to see some great cakes, and these are really great. Does everyone realize all those notions and tools on the craft cakes is edible? - really, really amazing. The stained glass cake is my new favorite wedding cake.
I have fantasies that I can make beautiful cakes. Every time someone has a birthday I make a freakishly complicated in my head amazing cake. Then it turns into a wreck. Like this past one... all my icing melted so I just made boobies. It was supposed to be a bass.
These are beautiful... maybe I should take a class- because it'd be a lot easier to make a couple of balls of yarn into boobies (always the fall back)
Fortunately, I was not wearing socks when I read this post.
Yay! Someone else who loves peanut butter and butter! That was and is still the only way I make peanut butter sandwiches or toast. My mom thought I was nuts, but she was always good enough to oblige me as a kid.
As for the cakes, I am just blown away, especially by the stained glass and mosaic cakes. The detail is just too perfect for words.
Socks completely GONE! Amazing!
Wow. Wow. Wow. I couldn't believe that first one was cake.
<Does the "we're not worthy" bow.>
"Small Things Iced" sounds like it should be on a hitman's business card.
These are so lovely! Thank you for sharing such creativity.
Son? Son?! Who wrote this post? This is the first I've heard of a son on Cake Wrecks!
LOVE! LOVE! LOVE the crafty cakes!! Speechless at such intricate detail! Wowzers!!!
Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the floor.
As a knitter, I need that first yarn cake. Margaret is a lucky lady.
And as a human being, I need that stained-glass cake. As a lamp. I would design a whole freaking room around that thing.
The bunchofpants sewing basket is truly amazing. So much perfect detail work, it's really astounding how perfect it is.
Collette's Mondrian-inspired cake is also outstanding, just think how much time went into all those little square. *shakes head*
And PB&B sammiches are the best!
My mom's favorite sandwich was peanut butter and butter, so no judgement here. My 7yo didn't believe me that those were cakes. "There's scissors on cake?" "No, the scissors ARE cake." "What?!?!"
Wow! That sewing machine looks just like my 1926 Singer. In fact I'd better go and check it's not actually made of cake. Though it'd be a bit stale by now, right enough.
simply amazing!
I didn't know you had a son! I thought you and Jon didn't want kids!
AMAZING cakes, by the way.
Love, Love, Love the Mosaic Cake!! They are all amazing!
*sighs with pleasure at the beautiful cakes...
The stained glass cake is amazing, very Frank Lloyd Wright(ish). Love it!
I am *so* not leaving this page. Ever. My jaw has been stitched to the floor with that Singer cake.
Just thought you should know...I love peanut butter and butter, too!
Wowza. If my cakes ever look an 1/8th as good as those ones I'd feel like I'd won the lottery. I'm blown away by the talent. I LOVE the wedding cake.
I like peanut butter and butter too. I toast the bread and then make a sandwich. It's best with chocolate instant breakfast drink!
These cakes are all amazing. I'm a crafter, so I was excited to see this posting. My favorite is the ribbon roses -- so textured, each one different. If I ever have a wedding cake, I want those roses cascading down it. Probably in different colors, though.
And I second the surprise at the heretofore unmentioned son. Details, please.
Holy crap! I mean . . . holy crap!
I want that sewing machine. It looks too real. My mom had one like that for years (and probably still does. Oh, and the crayons. Love it.
