What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Don't MAKE Me Count To Threeth

Remember the old saying?

"Twice is a coincidence...

"Three times is a pattern...

"And four times means there's some kind of voodoo curse involved."

Jennifer N., Amber D., Tara A., & Brynna R., you guys get the rooster tears, and I'll fetch a bucket of sprinkles. Meet back here at oh threeth hundred.

Wow, my 23rd birthday is this Saturday. Hope this isn't a foreshadowing of what's to come!

Whatth? I don't see a problemth.

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

If so many cake "decorators" write 23th, maybe 23th is correct and we've been wrong all along.
Come to think of it, I think c-o-n-g-r-a-t-u-l-a-t-i-o-n-s may be a misspelling of "congraduations."

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

Weird numbering or no, I am now craving strawberries after that last one. Yum.

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRena

Wow ironic because my 23th birthday is this Friday. Mebbe 23th is the lisp friendly version for those of us with speech impediments?

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBekah

Maybe it's done in old English?

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMarie

I missed my 23th birthday! :( I feel like I've been jipped.

Did you ever see that Jim Carrey film, The Number 23th
?

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDana

Today actually is my 23th birthday so thanks for the cake and making me laugh on my birthday!!

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterEmily

The real answer: All of these cakes are decorated by Castilian cake decorators, and thath the proper way to pronounth that.

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterpagopago

"You keep using that word. I don't think it means what you think it means!

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea

LOVE how on the last one they took the time to score lines on the icing so they would write in a straight line. Too bad that kind of prep work didn't extend to spell check!

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDawn

Today is my birthday, though not my 23th birthday.

Have a happy day, everyone!

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGary

Heh... I actually took until the third cake before I realized that it said "23th" and not "23rd".

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterElissa / Big Blog of Crock

But today is only the 14st. I think you should have waited until the 23th to post this.

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMelonie

My birthday is on the 23th! :D Maybe I should suggest a cake from one of these fine decorators...

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSabrina

I went to school with a girl who had excellent penmanship and perfect spelling, but just couldn't retain facts or solve problems. These cakes remind me of her. Impeccably decorated. Spelled "bithdya" correctly. Twenty-threeth.

Maybe the wreckerator had to work a bunch of consecutive shifts, and put the finishing touches on these cakes during the 23th hour. When you're that tired, your brain starts playing tricks on you. "'Third'? That can't be right; the 'r' should go right after the 'h'... but 'thrid' isn't a real word either. Threest? Threend? Threeth? That's it! Threeth! I'm so glad I figured that out!"

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNaomi

I agree with CAM- I missed my 23th too! Oh well, at least my 30rd is coming up soon- it's going to be a blasth! :)

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmber

Funny how it's always 23. This is a really easy mistake to make. I used to work for a newspaper and we had a little blurb on the front page that said the date and "this the 23rd day of the year" or whatever. After we messed that up a few times the editor told us to read it out loud. You just can't get your tongue around 23th or 1th or 5st.

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLeigh Ann

To quote the wisdom of Calvin & Hobbes, "This one's tricky. You have to use imaginary numbers, like eleventeen ... "

Or in this case 23th......either way.....

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermiss_paper

I love the chocolate one...it looks like it took them until they started to cut the cake before realizing the misprint...@sharyn(th) i'm so glad i wasnt drinking anything...since i got weird enough looks while laughing at your post...@andrea...very inconceivable....lolol

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJessica

Since today is actually my sister's 23th birthday, I had to send her the link. It can't be a coincidence.

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMimiheart

Little known fact, the 23th birthday come right after the 22st birthday and the 24rd. It's a very special year! haha

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLauren

Next month I'm celebrating my 42th birthday!

Happy birthday Gary & Emily!

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

Rooster tears?

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

um, just noticed on the top one- does the white blob of icing on the right look like it's giving us the finger?? or something even less kid-friendly?? (nudge, nudge, say no more)

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

I want a 23th cake! Even a 21th would be great!!

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLorrie

Oh, the comments are making me laugh even harder!

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLeslie

Just realized that I too missed my 23th birthday. FAIL. :( Therefore, to make up for this loss, next year I am turning 23th instead of 30! WIN! :)

Thank you Jen!

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLis

For my next birthday, I'm going to request a cake, and make sure 26st is on it. Perhaps they'll do a reverse wreck and actually spell it correctly, against my instructions?

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMiao

Hilarious. Saw this at Kroger the other day. Apparently the customer refused to buy it so they scraped off the words, cut up the cake and tried to sell it piece by piece.

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSamantha

Another request for explanation of rooster tears! Please! Can't find a thing!

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCloudy

haha, quite the coincidence! my birthday is TODAY aaaand it's my 23th! :D

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCoreyL

Just a question… does this only happen for the 23th birthday? There's no 33th or 43th? If so, then I, too, missed my x3th birthday. Deprived, I say, deprived!
(I'm hoping there's something in store for my upcoming 40rd birthday that will may up for it?)

I agree, the white bits on the first cake look almost indecent (the recipient's too young to be thinking "f--- my 23rd". I think that hits around 40). And why is Kyle's cake iced on the sides but not the top? (I do like how it was sliced then photo snapped). Christine's cake looks well decorated other than a "barely noticeable" error. And yes, chocolate strawberries sound delish.

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAliza

Thath tho awthome!

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJen

@Miao, PLEASE do it, AND tell us what happens.

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

Jesse's cake handwriting is actually kind of cute! Maybe on my husband's 31st, I will request it to say 31th or 31nd .Let's start something here!

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterlittle lovables

Oh THIS IS GOLD. Brace yourselves, people, for the eternal frustration that is lack of proper grammar epidemic in bakeries across America. These are too good to be true, and your comedic timing is the lonely-looking raspberry on the (misspelled!) sunday!

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterStoich91

Wow, must be a 23th virus going around! Everyone's catching it. I noticed that last cake has 12st strawberries on it.. Whew! 13st would have been unlucky!

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSally

@Aliza - I agree! I had my 33rd birthday, then went directly to my 34th - did I miss a year? Because if so, that totally sucks. I'm owed 33th party, cake, and presents as far as I'm concerned.

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCarrie

I can't even pronounce that! Seriously, our school system is really producing a bumper crop, huh?

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKim S

As my friend Robin says, they walk among us, AND they vote!

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterShannon

@Amber - 30rd.... LOLOLOL.... That's my new favorite number to say out loud. Say it with me folks... THIRTY IRD.... LOLOL.

September 15, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBets

@ Andrea - "You keep using that word. I don't think it means what you think it means!"

You made me laugh so hard. XD

September 15, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMin

Ah, yes, the Curse of the 23th. I was born on the 23th of April, so I'm quite familiar. Tidbit: Wm Shakespeare was also born on April 23th.
