What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Truth In Advertising

The Promise:

The Delivery:

Oh, they'll never forget it, alright.

Thanks to wreckporter Robert W., who tells me this cake is currently sitting on a bakery counter - right next to that first picture - as a means of advertising. Or, as Robert suspects, perhaps more as a warning.

P.S. The longer you look at this, the funnier it gets. Seriously. Can we take a moment to "appreciate" those bottom borders? And the fact that the baker used the giant shell tip to do all the delicate piping work? Huh? Can we?

Seriously that bakery manager should have not let t hat cake be used as a display. The flowers are gum paste that bakeries can purchase already made from either Bakery Crafts or Deco Pac.

It's like the acid tests, where you can see the effects of LSD that render a person's drawing increasingly abstract, and lines disconnected/unrelated to each other.

I'll take the second cake please. No CCC in that sucker at least!

Oh. My. Word.

I've seen some pitiful messes in my time - but this (excuse the pun) takes the cake.

I can see the scene now.

Bride: "Oh... hunny... look at that picture! That cake is perfect!"

Groom: "Wow... you're right sweetie... it's gorgeous! I can't wai... er... OH HECK NO! Dear GOD What is that thing! It looks like your Aunt Myrtle's lost her girdle again! We can't get our cake here.."

Bride: "But.. But.. But.. the PICTURE. That cake is perfect!"

Groom: "Mary, put your glasses on and look at the cake next to it"

Bride: "Oh, alright" *puts glasses on* *looks at cake* *Shreiks and faints."

Groom: "Someone call EMS!"

And then comes the paramedics to remove the poor shocks and scared-for-life bride from the bakery... what's she saying? We can barely hear her whispering to herself "but the picture was perfect... the picture was perfect... "

Gary,

You win the interwebs for the Dickens reference.

The ad appears to be from a company I used to decorate for a few years ago...They expected you to have a bare cake completed from base ice to last sprinkle in under 15 minutes, no matter the size or complexity of the design. So maybe the decorator skipped the "finer details", like a smooth base ice or a tip under #8 to make up for that time...
Ok, who am I kidding? It's bad. But unfortunately I could see the time constriction would not help. We just blew it off and the manager was so rarely involved he never knew, but not all are that fortunate.

So, at least we've confirmed that the flowers were brought in! LOL. I have made a couple of cakes that I just beat into a cake-pop-to-be pile. Not once did I think of using then as effective advertising for my work!

Ummm . . . the Wreckerator definitely changed tips at least once; the (relatively) little smooth, white dots were absolutely not made with a star tip of any sort. Were they well-made dots . . . ? Well, that's another story.

It *is* possible to decorate a cake beautifully and completely using the same tip - look closely at the "ad" cake, and you'll note that it was apparently done with only one tip, a smallish round one. The key is that the decorating tip for the ad was in good proportion to the size of the cake, which the tip used on the poor copy (in several sense of the word) was not.

Bummer - it comes so close to being nice!

The wreck has clearly suffered damage whilst on display, but I've gotta agree with several other commenters that the butercream surface wasn't well-smoothed to begin with.

Is that the large-print edition?
