Sorry if I got your hopes up for a Goonies cake just now (that would be an entire post in itself), but how about an awesome Gremlin cake to whet your '80s appetite?

It's sweet little Gizmo! (This movie terrified me as a child. Possibly as an adult also).
I was born and raised in the '80s (and the U.S.A! Bruuuuuuuuuce!) so I totally remember getting a Rubik's Cube in my Christmas stocking ... aaand throwing it against the wall ten frustrating minutes later. Obviously mine was defective.

Dragon's Lair! A total classic, and if that cake is life-size it could easily be the raddest thing I've seen all year.

Although,I do see a few stowaways from the '90s getting a little ahead of themselves in there (I'm looking at you, SpongeBob). But to be fair, do you remember Pillow People? Pretty sure those were the early ancestors of SpongeBob.

At least ...I think that's the movie this cake represents. Is this the one with the torture pit of lava? And the little snakes coming out of the big snake for people to eat? Yeah, still having nightmares.

super cakes! But I had an etch-a-sketch in the 60s. It must have been an 80's reissue.
Cyberjar, boomboxes first came out in the late 1980s, at least in the area where I grew up. Alas, the '80s also brought us parachute pants, jelly shoes (and jelly bracelets), Adam Curry's hair, and "We are the World." (Well meaning song played far, far too often!)
The Cabbage Patch Kid had one of those noise makers that was used to blow out the candles. It was pretty cool. I was at the party- it was at the Times Square Toys R Us to celebrate the 25th birthday of the cabbage patch kids. Oh, and the older man in the picture is Xavier Roberts! The line to meet him was longer than the line to get cake!

@Fran: I remember scrunchies as far back as 1987. The reason I remember is because another teacher at a school I taught at said they looked bunched up wet panties. Okay, yeah, that sounds really nasty putting it like that, but she explained that it was like if you had gone swimming in your clothes and how your underwear gets all rolled up when you take them off. Why that story sticks with me I have no idea.
I don't really think of Etch-a-Sketch as an '80s thing. I had one when I was a kid in the early '70s!
I went to a church this morning whose congregation is largely around the 15-25 yo range. The pastor asked how many people has seen Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and maybe 15 people raised thier hands. I have never been more disappointed in our society's youth.
The pastor also compared the angel's visit to the shephards (Luke 2:1-20) to the movie, which makes him pretty awesome. :3
Seriously a crime to cut into and eat any of these cakes! They're brilliant!

Here's a piece of trivia for you - The movie "Gremlins" came out in, I believe 1984, and due to the rating many parents thought it was a non-scary/feel good movie (like ET) and took little kids (5 and under) to see it. This movie as you know isn't anything like ET and and the only thing not creepy and disturbing is Gizmo and the family that adopts him. Polly Holiday (currently the only character name I remember is Billy)is frightning, what happens to Gizmo is really scary and they mention that there is no Santa Claus. I'm even going to touch on the actual gremlins themselves. Kids were terrified and parents were outraged. Because, originally,there was only G, M (was changed to PG in the early seventies), R, and X ratings, parents demanded a new system be developed, And that is why, today we have PG - 13 and NC - 18. I was in my twenties in the '80s and I remember a college professor sounding off his outrage at the trauma these children were going through because of this movie.

LOVE the Indy cake! The little gold idol on top defintly marks it as a Raiders of the Lost Ark tribute, but the lava pit and disturbing meal were in Temple of Doom--which terrified me as a kid, and a teenager, and an adult. The only thing keeping it on my shelf is the fact that it fills out the classic trilogy (Kingdom of the Crystal Skull never happened).
Gremlins TERRIFIED me and my sister. In fact, my Mom took us from the theater crying if memory serves me correctly....
The Pinkie Pie cake is awesome. I tried to make a MLP cake for my daughter one birthday and made the mistake of just doing the head. When it was done, all I could think of was,"Oh my gosh, this looks like something from The Godfather." A total wreck to be sure, but fortunately she loved. it. Of course, she was only 4 at the time, so her taste was suspect....
YES! The Dragon's Lair Cake is DEFINITELY a reference to the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants-- 80s references AND secret nostalgia for my mid-'00s middle/high school days? WIN, Cakewrecks, win.

My 21 yr. old college student son is a 'Bronie' and he would quite literally bite your head off (in a 'Friendship is Magic' kind of way) for the 'Pinkie Pie' mistake. When I mistakenly refer to it as 'My Pretty Pony' his eyes nearly roll right out of his head!
He and his roommates stay up all night to catch the latest 'Pony' episodes on The Hub every Saturday morning at 7:00am (Redmond, Washington, DigiPen Institute of Technology time.) I'll have to send in a picture of the 'My Little Pony - Rainbow Cake' he and his roommates created... Then again, maybe I shouldn't... They're RTIS students, NOT cake decorators.
What?! No Strawberry Shortcake?? I still have all mine in their original boxes. BRAND NEW! I LOVED my dolls! I had them all. The miniatures, the bigger ones, the rag dolls, the baby shortcakes that wet themselves... You missed Care Bears and Smurfs too! :)
Ugh... yeah, that's the old Generation 3 "My Little Hippo" version of Pinkie Pie. Pass.

Wooo - child of the 80's here too. So I'm gonna have to get up on my high horse here (ha, get it?) - Pinkie Pie isn't an 80's pony. That cake is fabulous, but nope, PP wasn't around till this past decade.
And Seaponies were fabulous -and yes I can still sing the theme song for them too.
The Ghostbusters cake is fantastic too - and yes, that movie was scary too me as a kid, the part where she gets grabbed by the couch and then pushed into the creepy hand doorway. Ayie!
Do not like Gizmo. Cake looks nice but very scary.
Cake Wrecks has turned me off eating thing with eyes and a face on a cake. Ever since the creepy baby cake - I don't even want pics or anything.

Yeah, Pinkie Pie is a G3 pony from the 2000's. A more apt G1 pony would have been Gusty, Cherries Jubilee, Firefly or even Applejack.....

I think all of these are great! I love the Gremlin cake--Gizmo was generally harmless anyway, just don't get him wet or feed him after midnight. Otherwise he was and is just adorable!
I love the 80's so it was inevitable that I would love this post! Some of those cakes are so detailed, I would have never guessed they were cakes if you didn't tell me. Especially the Dragon lair arcade game! WOW! THAT'S talent!
I am just became a fan of this site so I have some catching up to do. The eighties were great. About the only thing I didn't own was a Nintindo. I was not much of a gammer in those day. Even still today I prefer computer games over game system games. But those cakes are well made. The only the I could draw on an etech a scetch was a a square and stairs as well too so I didn't find them so fun. My first Rubiks Cube after a while I peeled all the stickers off and matched all the colors up calling it done. I thought why try to work this complicated thing when there is an easier way to do it. lol
