What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Totally '80s

Heyyoooooou guuuuuuuys!

That's right: put your hair in scrunchies and peg your jeans; it's about get all eighties up in here!

Sorry if I got your hopes up for a Goonies cake just now (that would be an entire post in itself), but how about an awesome Gremlin cake to whet your '80s appetite?

By eat Cakes

It's sweet little Gizmo! (This movie terrified me as a child. Possibly as an adult also).

I was born and raised in the '80s (and the U.S.A! Bruuuuuuuuuce!) so I totally remember getting a Rubik's Cube in my Christmas stocking ... aaand throwing it against the wall ten frustrating minutes later. Obviously mine was defective.

Submitted by Mira C; baker unknown. Photography by bunchofpants.

But there's nothing puzzling about this great cake, because it's hip to be square!

And speaking of squares ...

Submitted by Kim D. and made by The Cake Shop of San Jose

...that was the only thing I could ever produce on my Etch-a-Sketch. Well, that and stairs. Ahh, memories! I love the Superman logo here, it's a double dose of nostalgia!

If you were also a child of the eighties, I bet you can't look at this next cake without the theme song to Super Mario Bros plinking through your head.

By Icings by Ang

(Bing ding ding, da-ding da-ding!) I know you know what I'm talking about.

Or, if you preferred to get your video game fix by hoofing it down to the Qwick Stop with a pocket full of quarters, this might look familiar to you:

Submitted by Jenn F-S and made by Sweetest Perfections

Dragon's Lair! A total classic, and if that cake is life-size it could easily be the raddest thing I've seen all year.

And here are some familiar faces — Tom & Jerry, Spider-Man, Superman, and Looney Tunes to name a few. And Thundercats! HOOOOOO!

Submitted by Melissa K. and made by The Ladygloom

Although,I do see a few stowaways from the '90s getting a little ahead of themselves in there (I'm looking at you, SpongeBob). But to be fair, do you remember Pillow People? Pretty sure those were the early ancestors of SpongeBob.

These colorful confections are sure to make you smile:

Submitted by Jennifer V. and made by The Ladygloom

"Friendship is magic!" And so is cake! Especially when it's this cute! Wasn't Pinkie Pie everyone's favorite My Little Pony? (Or did you prefer that seahorse spin-off thing, Seawinkle? That one was weird).

Hey, Color Kids! Remember Twink, the loveable sprite sidekick of Rainbow Brite? Of course you do!

By Lisa A.

This wasn't made by a professional baker, but it's a) ten zillion times better than I could ever do, and b) so adorable I want to give it a hug!

Hang on a sec. I have to make a call. Because there's something strange ... in my neighborhood.

By Brendy's Cakes

Slimer! Check out all the great details on the Ectomobile here: that logo is spot-on perfect. I ain't afraid of no ghosts!(Ok, I admit ... I was also terrified of this movie as a child.)

And if you are craving more '80s hit movie cakes, may I present: Raiders of the Lost Ark!

Submitted by Shannon and made by Cakes by Jeanine

At least ...I think that's the movie this cake represents. Is this the one with the torture pit of lava? And the little snakes coming out of the big snake for people to eat? Yeah, still having nightmares.

Maybe I'll go cuddle my Cabbage Patch Kid for comfort.

Submitted by Jen M. and made by Charm City Cakes

OutSTANDING. Ha, get it?!

Yup, anyway you slice it,

By KAMI Cakes

...the '80s like, totally rocked!

But wait, why is the cabbage patch doll puking?

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRane

Based on the presence of the gold idol at the top of the Indiana Jones cake I think it is supposed to be the opening sequence from Raiders of the Lost Ark. Raiders has lots of snakes, Temple of Doom has lots of bugs and other seriously disturbing stuff.

[Editor's note- Thanks, Emily. All fixed! -john]

I'm SO glad I'm not the only one who was scared of Ghostbusters as a child! It was my husband's favorite movie and he teases me about it all the time!

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterWendy

Ghostbuster cake and Indiana Jones cakes make me happy :D but they were all great

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

Funny, my Rubik's cube worked just fine until I rearranged the stickers one too many times. It's much easier once it's all black, though!

Thank you so much for the trip back to my childhood!!

These 80's cakes really hit the spot for me! And for those really TURNED on by the My Little Pony cake, check out this squee-worthy site (which I had not idea of until about 5 minutes ago!): mylittlewiki.org

8-O Pinkie Pie... in between all those... CUPCAKES!??

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBea

The My Little Pony seahorses were called the Sea Ponies! I only remember because they were featured in like the first episode of MLP and they sang a ridiculously catchy earworm of a song. Whenever you needed their help, they'd show up singing "shoop shoop shoop-shoop-be-doo."

Clearly, I'm a child of the 80's.

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterjessica

I think scrunchies were a 90's phenomena, actually. I believe they first reared their ugly heads circa 1992...

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterFran

How big is that Dragon's Lair cake?!

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterClassic Steve

How is that giant Rubik's cake only worthy of third premium at the fair?? Were seconds and firsts even more amazing? Or were the judges a bunch of old farts or young 'uns who do not have nostalgia for the '80's?

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterlz

I know you're not supposed to feed a gremlin after midnight, but what about eating gremlin cake after midnight?

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPhil

Didn't the original Dragon's Lair box say "Don Bluth's Dragon's Lair" all over it?

I enjoyed watching people play it, but I was never tempted to drop quarters for what was basically waiting until it was time to push the joystick in the right direction.

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGeorge P

I am a child of the '70s and teen of the '80s, and to me, the phrase "Hey you guuuuys" brings back memories of the Children's Television Workshop/PBS series "The Electric Company." I wonder if it's used as some sort of homage in "Goonies"? I was too old when that movie came out to want to see it, so I'm not sure of the context.

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterShasta

Pinkie Pie wasnt an 80's pony ^^

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKatie

Now my (soon-to-be) 10-yr-old wants that Indiana Jones cake.
Very cool 80's cakes. If my hair was longer, I'd totally pull it into a side ponytail and, like, go hang at the mall. ;-) Totally. Instead, I think I'll get out my box of original My LIttle Ponies and spend some quality time grooming them with my daughter.

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJasry

This is the perfect post for my sister's birthday weekend. She was born in 1980, loves '80s nostalgia, and--since she's the best sister--deserves such an awesome Sunday Sweets post. Thanks, guys!

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterYet Another Jen

that rubik's cube has green on BOTH sides of the corner! No wonder they can't be solved! (They can't be solved, right? I mean that's the thing... unsolvable rubik's cube... tell me it cannot be solved!!)

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterbrianwrestler

I'm pretty sure that Dragon's Lair cake is a reference to the book/movie Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. There's a character named Brian in the book series that is totally addicted to that game and plays it everyday.

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJoy

Love these, especially the Gremlins cake!

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMelanie

These cakes are awesome except for one grammatical error: it's the '80s not the 80's. The apostrophe means that something is missing (19 from 1980s).

[Editor's note- Bwoops. Umm, late night editing and all that. Thanks for the heads up! -john]

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRen

am especially impressed by the rubik's cube but really intrigued by all the cool little cupcakes. know that you're generally not a fan of them, but the ones you feature are always fantastic little works of arts. (maybe a sunday sweets devoted to cupcakes? just a thought...)

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermickeyp415

Pinkie Pie wasn't a part of the original My Little Pony's cast. Obviously Dr. Whooves (http://mlpfanart.wikia.com/wiki/Doctor_Whooves) has taken her time traveling with him. :)

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDotti

The Rubik's cube would have been super awesome if the colors hadn't been messed up. Took it down to just awesome

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBill

Perfect timing! I've been on an 80s kick thanks to Ready Player One. You have read it, right? If not, you must read it immediately, or, better yet, let Wil Wheaton read it to you! (He narrated the studio book.)

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJoy

The Indy cake does look like it's supposed to be the beginning of Raiders, but Temple of Doom has the lava pit and the little snakes baked in the big snake.

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterToby P.

Awesome cakes but that Superman logo on the etch-a-sketch would have been impossible as drawn. The lines have to all be connected, and there was clearly white space in between. Still, quite impressive!

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKimberly

Is that Terry Pratchett in the Cabbage Patch photo? The older guy in the awesome hat?

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKat Hepworth

Yeah, that's from Raiders of the Lost Ark, but you're describing Temple of Doom, which was by far the creepiest.

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterErica T.

I was sooo afraid of my cabbage patch doll!!!

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered Commentertiny p. elephant

What a great walk down memory lane! I was a teen in the 80's and I thought Gremlins was scary, but that little Gizmo cake is cute as can be. Dragon's Lair was a favorite video game, but due to lack of quarters and coordination I never got very far. Ms. Pacman...now there was a game I was good at.:-) I love the Sunday Sweets today. Such happy memories!

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMarnieB

Ghostbusters was one of my favorite movies as a kid! My husband is under the delusion that the second Ghostbusters is better than the first, but he is seriously mistaken on this issue.

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterShannon

I made my daughter a Slimer cake for her 3rd birthday, she was totally taken by the Ghost Busters, although the slime in the the bathtub of GBII creeped her out for years. Suprised not to see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, her second favorite 80's toon. Yes, for Halloween one year I went as April the reporter and my little sprite went as Shredder. Now she is embarrassed if I ever bring up the subject of TMNTs, "Oh, moTHER!"

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAdoAnnie

Thank you BrianWrestler! My (not even fake) OCD went haywire when I saw that green corner. I'm glad I wasn't the only one to notice.

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterFreakedoutbunny

This is a cute post (even though I'm a child of an earlier era), but it causes me pain! It's '80s -- the apostrophe indicates missing numbers or letters, not possession -- 1980s, '80s. It's especially hard seeing it wrong on that cool cake at the end.

[Editor's note- Yup. I changed the title earlier but didn't think about the 14 times we said 80's in the post. However, the cake at the end is not my fault. I do have to wonder though... can '80s be possessive? And, if so, would it be the '80's rock? Hm... -john]

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered Commenteremcat

Here's another Rubik's Cube cake - not professional, but based off an actual scrambled cube so it's actually accurate!

http://www.pimpthatsnack.com/project/343/

That whole site's kind of neat, actually. Not much cake, though.

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLita

Pinkie Pie is awesome but not one of original My Little Ponies!

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnon

I believe that I got my first Etch A Sketch in the early 1960s.

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJohn

I LOVE these cakes!!
I want the My Little Pony, Cabbage Patch Kid, and Twink cakes!!!
My sister got her hubby a Nintendo groom's cake at their wedding....and it had a Star Wars game with it. I think they kept the controller. :-)

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterWhitney

so, ghostbusters scared you huh, ME TOO, and then i went in my room and had one of those hobby horses, whose shadow on the wall looked like the dogs that came out of the fridge, yep, my parents had to spend some time moving that OUT of my room so i could sleep!!!!!

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterbibef

To the people remarking about the My Little Pony cake- I did some research. Apparently, there *was* another version of Pinkie Pie, back in the G3 days: http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/G3_Pinkie_Pie So y'all are right that she wasn't an 80s pony (her G1 equivalent would be Surprise), but she's not exclusive to Friendship is Magic.

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKim

Ghostbusters terrified me as well. Still to this day I can't look at pink slime or portraits of sorcerers from the middle ages without shuddering in abject horror.

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterShishkaBerry

LOVE todays sweets. I'd eat them all..now. and then save some for later.

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJulie

I love these - I just wish the maker of the Rubik's Cube cake paid more attention to detail. It's a great cake, but the first ting I noticed was the fact that it could never be solved, if it were an actual puzzle.

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLuna

Had my first "wait, that's a cake?" moment with that Etch-A-Sketch. Brilliant!

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNaomi

Nope, sorry, Snake dinner and lava pit are from "Temple of Doom". Good try though ;)

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHannah Baker

OMG I LOVE the Dragon's Lair cake, that brought back memories! My brother ran the local arcade, and he and his friend "acquired" a laser disc player and brought home the laserdisc from the game, and we just sat and watched the entire game sequence with all the possibilities, like a movie. Revolutionary game for its time :) I'm also in love with the Twink cake, super adorable

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNiki

While these are all really amazing cakes, and as a fellow child of the 80s I recognized them all, I definitely sucked in some air when I saw the first one. Gremlins have always creeped me out.

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMelody

Love these. I've done a spate of 80s cakes for my family...including my own Velma cake last year...or is she 70s? I did Rainbow Brite for my daughter and TMNT Raphael for my son (http://www.flickr.com/photos/booturtle/sets/72157625114620020/). But I'm no professional...I"m always praying I don't end up in your bad cakes albums. :D

December 18, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterbooturtle

DOC is on the job, I see. ;-)

Maybe the decorator of the Rubik's Cube cake likes to mess with people's minds.
