Sorry if I got your hopes up for a Goonies cake just now (that would be an entire post in itself), but how about an awesome Gremlin cake to whet your '80s appetite?

It's sweet little Gizmo! (This movie terrified me as a child. Possibly as an adult also).
I was born and raised in the '80s (and the U.S.A! Bruuuuuuuuuce!) so I totally remember getting a Rubik's Cube in my Christmas stocking ... aaand throwing it against the wall ten frustrating minutes later. Obviously mine was defective.

Dragon's Lair! A total classic, and if that cake is life-size it could easily be the raddest thing I've seen all year.

Although,I do see a few stowaways from the '90s getting a little ahead of themselves in there (I'm looking at you, SpongeBob). But to be fair, do you remember Pillow People? Pretty sure those were the early ancestors of SpongeBob.

But wait, why is the cabbage patch doll puking?
Based on the presence of the gold idol at the top of the Indiana Jones cake I think it is supposed to be the opening sequence from Raiders of the Lost Ark. Raiders has lots of snakes, Temple of Doom has lots of bugs and other seriously disturbing stuff.

I'm SO glad I'm not the only one who was scared of Ghostbusters as a child! It was my husband's favorite movie and he teases me about it all the time!
Ghostbuster cake and Indiana Jones cakes make me happy :D but they were all great
Funny, my Rubik's cube worked just fine until I rearranged the stickers one too many times. It's much easier once it's all black, though!

The My Little Pony seahorses were called the Sea Ponies! I only remember because they were featured in like the first episode of MLP and they sang a ridiculously catchy earworm of a song. Whenever you needed their help, they'd show up singing "shoop shoop shoop-shoop-be-doo."
Clearly, I'm a child of the 80's.
I think scrunchies were a 90's phenomena, actually. I believe they first reared their ugly heads circa 1992...
How big is that Dragon's Lair cake?!
How is that giant Rubik's cake only worthy of third premium at the fair?? Were seconds and firsts even more amazing? Or were the judges a bunch of old farts or young 'uns who do not have nostalgia for the '80's?
I know you're not supposed to feed a gremlin after midnight, but what about eating gremlin cake after midnight?
Didn't the original Dragon's Lair box say "Don Bluth's Dragon's Lair" all over it?
I enjoyed watching people play it, but I was never tempted to drop quarters for what was basically waiting until it was time to push the joystick in the right direction.
I am a child of the '70s and teen of the '80s, and to me, the phrase "Hey you guuuuys" brings back memories of the Children's Television Workshop/PBS series "The Electric Company." I wonder if it's used as some sort of homage in "Goonies"? I was too old when that movie came out to want to see it, so I'm not sure of the context.

Very cool 80's cakes. If my hair was longer, I'd totally pull it into a side ponytail and, like, go hang at the mall. ;-) Totally. Instead, I think I'll get out my box of original My LIttle Ponies and spend some quality time grooming them with my daughter.
This is the perfect post for my sister's birthday weekend. She was born in 1980, loves '80s nostalgia, and--since she's the best sister--deserves such an awesome Sunday Sweets post. Thanks, guys!
that rubik's cube has green on BOTH sides of the corner! No wonder they can't be solved! (They can't be solved, right? I mean that's the thing... unsolvable rubik's cube... tell me it cannot be solved!!)
I'm pretty sure that Dragon's Lair cake is a reference to the book/movie Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. There's a character named Brian in the book series that is totally addicted to that game and plays it everyday.

These cakes are awesome except for one grammatical error: it's the '80s not the 80's. The apostrophe means that something is missing (19 from 1980s).

am especially impressed by the rubik's cube but really intrigued by all the cool little cupcakes. know that you're generally not a fan of them, but the ones you feature are always fantastic little works of arts. (maybe a sunday sweets devoted to cupcakes? just a thought...)
Pinkie Pie wasn't a part of the original My Little Pony's cast. Obviously Dr. Whooves (http://mlpfanart.wikia.com/wiki/Doctor_Whooves) has taken her time traveling with him. :)
The Rubik's cube would have been super awesome if the colors hadn't been messed up. Took it down to just awesome

The Indy cake does look like it's supposed to be the beginning of Raiders, but Temple of Doom has the lava pit and the little snakes baked in the big snake.
Awesome cakes but that Superman logo on the etch-a-sketch would have been impossible as drawn. The lines have to all be connected, and there was clearly white space in between. Still, quite impressive!

What a great walk down memory lane! I was a teen in the 80's and I thought Gremlins was scary, but that little Gizmo cake is cute as can be. Dragon's Lair was a favorite video game, but due to lack of quarters and coordination I never got very far. Ms. Pacman...now there was a game I was good at.:-) I love the Sunday Sweets today. Such happy memories!
Ghostbusters was one of my favorite movies as a kid! My husband is under the delusion that the second Ghostbusters is better than the first, but he is seriously mistaken on this issue.
I made my daughter a Slimer cake for her 3rd birthday, she was totally taken by the Ghost Busters, although the slime in the the bathtub of GBII creeped her out for years. Suprised not to see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, her second favorite 80's toon. Yes, for Halloween one year I went as April the reporter and my little sprite went as Shredder. Now she is embarrassed if I ever bring up the subject of TMNTs, "Oh, moTHER!"

This is a cute post (even though I'm a child of an earlier era), but it causes me pain! It's '80s -- the apostrophe indicates missing numbers or letters, not possession -- 1980s, '80s. It's especially hard seeing it wrong on that cool cake at the end.
[Editor's note- Yup. I changed the title earlier but didn't think about the 14 times we said 80's in the post. However, the cake at the end is not my fault. I do have to wonder though... can '80s be possessive? And, if so, would it be the '80's rock? Hm... -john]

so, ghostbusters scared you huh, ME TOO, and then i went in my room and had one of those hobby horses, whose shadow on the wall looked like the dogs that came out of the fridge, yep, my parents had to spend some time moving that OUT of my room so i could sleep!!!!!
To the people remarking about the My Little Pony cake- I did some research. Ghostbusters terrified me as well. Still to this day I can't look at pink slime or portraits of sorcerers from the middle ages without shuddering in abject horror.

I love these - I just wish the maker of the Rubik's Cube cake paid more attention to detail. It's a great cake, but the first ting I noticed was the fact that it could never be solved, if it were an actual puzzle.

OMG I LOVE the Dragon's Lair cake, that brought back memories! My brother ran the local arcade, and he and his friend "acquired" a laser disc player and brought home the laserdisc from the game, and we just sat and watched the entire game sequence with all the possibilities, like a movie. Revolutionary game for its time :) I'm also in love with the Twink cake, super adorable
While these are all really amazing cakes, and as a fellow child of the 80s I recognized them all, I definitely sucked in some air when I saw the first one. Gremlins have always creeped me out.
Love these. I've done a spate of 80s cakes for my family...including my own Velma cake last year...or is she 70s? I did Rainbow Brite for my daughter and TMNT Raphael for my son (http://www.flickr.com/photos/booturtle/sets/72157625114620020/). But I'm no professional...I"m always praying I don't end up in your bad cakes albums. :D
