What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

When The World Ends, Blame The Ninja Deer

You know how sometimes we like to zoom in to see all the wrecky details?

Well, it turns out sometimes we should zoom OUT.

Take this wedding cake, for example:

While I think you'll agree that finger-smeared "camouflage" is a true wonder to behold, there's no way for you to fully appreciate the entire artistic "tableau" - the one hinted at by that snippet of caution tape in the background - until you zoom out a ways:

I'll forgive the balloons, the little boot vases, and even the toy tractors - but two plywood boards balanced on a used tractor tire? That's time to take a stand, people. And burn it.

And, ok, since you insist:

Whoah, whoah, whoah. Where did those tiny deer come from?!

No, seriously, did you see any tiny plastic deer in those first two photos? 'Cuz I didn't.

Wait.

I just thought of something:

What if the deer were wearing camouflage?

{***}

That sound just then?

That was your mind being blown.

Many thanks to Anony M., who also provided a photo of the bridal party, but I've decided to protect the identities of the guilty. After all, any bridesmaid forced to wear a camo dress with a neon orange petticoat and cowboy boots has suffered enough, don't you think?

I'm confused by the cake knife/server. Were they trying to make them look like hooves of something????? :/

I dunno - it looks like it was a fun wedding! And yes, I've already seen the pics of the wedding party - I know where they could buy those petticoats - any square dance shop - and I'd totally be out there line dancing with 'em! I will admit the the cammy frosting's pretty messy - but it maybe once s/he got started, the wreckorator couldn't see the cake properly (cammied, y'know) and was just guesstimating on where to place the smears?

I *can* believe every bit of this is a real wedding after watching Redneck Weddings on CMT. That's right, this cake and breath-taking description of the bridesmaids dresses is pretty darn tame compared to the weddings on that show....."To the pain" indeed!

To the person that asked:
You can get an orange petticoat at Petticoatjct.com
Please do not ask me how I know this.

Tracy, are you Tracy from Durant? If so I also want to know which of our relatives got married and didn't invite me either.

Stealth deer! Now I wish I had those on my wedding cake.

if i didn't know better, i'd say a little kid was playing finger paints.
love the caution sign...that's just what you want to see at a wedding celebration.

October 5, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterali

I think the caution tape in the back ground really ties the whole wedding theme together.

SO glad some people have a sense of humor! Why do a traditional thing that means nothing to you when you can have a unique day with unique details? I think this is awesome personal and the camo dresses with hunter orange petticoats sound great!!! Make it your own, people, NOT the same thing everybody else has!!! :):) you GO, tractor-lovers!

That isn't plywood, that is barnwood. And just because they are farmers and want to incorporate that into their wedding isn't a completely awful and horrible thing. That being said, the cake does look like crap and I wouldn't have it at my wedding. But they deer, I'm sure they are there because it is a John Deere hay roller in the background.

I think the whole wedding is very cute- the cake, not so much :)
Heaven forbid that the bride and groom have a wedding that reflects their personalities and lives- far better to have a boring white wedding- SO much more tasteful.
It looks like it was a fun party!

October 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJalla

Well, put me in the minority but I'm going to stand up for the bride and groom doing things their own way. It's not to my taste, but isn't that the point? Instead of some boring "traditional" white cake and silver monogrammed expensive thing, the bride and groom personalized it and had the wedding they wanted.
So I'm not going to criticize the wedding, but I will say that I don't think that cake was well done at ALL. The camo is messy, the deer are dangerous and the lacy heart topper just does not go with anything else on the cake.

As soon as I pick up my jaw off the ground, I'm going to request a picture of the bridal party! Blur out the faces if you must, but I wanna see those dresses!! :-)

Do not advise me what this means about me: my sole issue with this cake is the red and yellow flowers on top of a camo cake. Yeah.

My mind wasn’t nearly as blown by this as that Boop pic yesterday.

(Okay, the border isn’t on the edge in that last pic but it did leave room for the deer so I gave it a pass.)

Cake Wrecks team, you all are my heroes. Thanks for the late night editing tonight on the other post. You made my evening.

Is the heart behind the couple on top one of those poppuri filled lace things of the 80's?

October 6, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSusan

That's the kind of wedding my husband's band plays for all the time!! We live in rural Georgia...

October 6, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Tacky, tacky, tacky, tacky...I can't type the word "tacky" enough.

Jeez.

October 6, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSalannB

OK - my son so wants to see the wedding party pic, he so far wants a camo tux and her in orange for his wedding....please share

October 6, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRilekat

I want to see the groom's cake. Thinking it might be roadkill red velvet. You must post the wedding party pic.

October 6, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterOMGTexas

Wow, my four year old son just asked me if it fell down in the grass! I can't see anyone choking on the deer because I can't see anyone actually eating that cake. Seriously, just lost my appetite.

October 6, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMelly

It almost looks like another cake with the deer. The icing is a lot darker than the first two. Even if the lighting was different.

October 6, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLori

One cake vs. several cakes: I'm just happy you post them.

Anyway, sometimes one cake deserves a special focus. Betty comes to mind: she's such a star! :p

@Isolder74 - You nearly made me breathe my beverage, I laughed so suddenly at your comment. Red Green!

Other than that, I can't bring myself to be horrified by this concept. It's interesting, although far from unique in my little corner of Pennsylvania. Here south of Pittsburgh, we're like a little bubble of deep south transplanted north. In the 15 mile radius surrounding my house, I can think of at least 7 large functioning farms, and most of us are very proud of our redneck status. There isn't a Jeff Foxworthy joke that doesn't apply to one of my relatives. Cars on blocks and random appliances abound in yards with weeds 4 feet high, Earnhardt Sr. is a minor deity and up for canonization, high school graduation usually happens after one's 20th birthday if at all, and high school pregnancy is so common our high school offers free daycare so the teen moms can keep failing classes. Heck, a few years ago, the theme for the senior prom was John Deere, complete with green and camo decorations and couples arriving on tractors instead of in limousines.

I do, however, think the cake is a wreck. Not because of theme, but because of execution. In fact, whoever mangled camo that badly is due for an execution. Either the deer are a choking hazard or someone chose the wrong tip for their icing bag and made hugely oversized icing scallops. And the lace heart mirror on top completely ruins the theme. More appropriate would have been a barn silhouette behind the cowboy hat-wearing miniature people kissing.

Somebody, please 'splain. Why do they call it camo when if you wore it, you couldn't sneak in at midnight during a power outage and a total eclipse of the moon?

October 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBerk

Where's the cake? I can't see it.

October 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLindaLou

I have seriously looked at the top two photos three times trying to find those deer. Still can't see them.

October 7, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterlilmrsmchenry

I am just wondering if you noticed that the cake is in front of a straw baler? Granted, it looks like a nice straw baler but my goodness people!

October 19, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJustin

I was laughing SO HARD at 11:24 at NIGHT....I'm sure my neighbours heard me LOLing....

November 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCandiceWhiskeyD

C'mon this has to be the Ozark wedding of the century! and I actually was scrolling up and down trying to find the deer in the first picture...

September 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDawnG

Is that an /actual/ cake? Sometimes I think people try to get on this blog... I need to stop hoping.
