What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: So Stinkin' Cute

This week we're featuring some of the sweetest, cutest, most adorable, lovable, um... [consulting thesaurus] darling, bewitching, and fetching baby animal cakes you ever will see. Why? Well, if you must know, I'm feeling a bit sensitive this week.

This is john, by the way.

So, let me just get my box of tissues and we'll do this thing. Starting with Jen's favorite:

Found at the 2008 Orlando ICES Convention; baker unknown.

The hand-painted shading here is amazing. And the animals are adorable. And the lion isn't eating the zebra or the giraffe. So it's a win-win-win.

This cake is slightly more realistic:

Sub'd by Hilda F., and made by The Sweetest Thing Cake Studio

See how the monkey and giraffe cower in fear as the mighty tiger stalks his prey? Can you feel the tension? Can. You. FEEL IT?!?! No?

Maybe it's just me.

And now... sweet sleeping dragon!

Sub'd by Amelie B. and made by her sister Helene

Awwww. Okay. *sniff* I'm all verklempt. *sniff* I promised myself I wouldn't cry...

[blowing nose]

Hey! Look! Pandas!

Sub'd by Aljona and made by KralleCakes

And not just any pandas; these are the rare Russian Nesting Pandas. The mostly eat eucalyptus leaves and borscht.

Preeeesenting, the sweetest giraffe ever!

Literally. I think the lack of neck really adds to the adorabletude, don't you?

And because I have an inordinate affection for tigers:

Sub'd by Jade D. and made by Theresa Gue

So. Cool. Jen says this reminds her of some Lisa Frank folders she had in middle school. Which she claims is a huge compliment. So there.

And you know what else has stripes? (I am the king of segues)

Sub'd by Brenda B., and made by Lilo Taart

I'm digging the bow and the vintage 20's hair part. Just dandy!

And speaking of bows. (I'm on a roll!)

By Aletha B.

Baby Cthulhu!! AAAAAUUUGGHH!! SOOO CUUUUTE!!

And get this: this is Aletha B.'s first cake. Yes, really! Mike, Duff, and Bronwen better watch out, 'cuz Aletha B.'s coming, and she's got a Cthulhu.

And speaking of... cake. (Okay, that one wasn't my best work.)

By Ann N.

Adorable. And hip. Oh. Yeah.

Another of Jen's favorites:

Sub'd by Orna G., and made by Odelia

Hand-painted rosebuds, cuddly teddy bears, and a miniature cake on cake? I can bearly stand it!

And finally, for your viewing pleasure, allow me to present...

a unicorn with a comb-over:

Sub'd by Elizabeth A., and made by Sachi Swick

You're welcome.

I like the first Zooborn books - babies from around the world! This post was so cute, made me 'awwww' the whole time.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterjen

Loved today's cakes. My 2 year old son watches me as I read the CW blogs and laugh my head off. Now he comes over to check out the cakes, does his own laughing impression and then says "EW" or "That's scary!" to most of them! Love it!

So if we are chosen for the book prize today, I think my son would dig the 1st book. He's an animal freak!

I would totally love either of the books.
Those cakes are so stinkin' cute! The first one takes the cake for me though - the blue lion is so adorable!

-Get it? Takes the cake? I can be witty too!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLori

either of these books would be awesome, almost as awesome as the dragon cake!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMe

Cutest cakes ever! They were all so great I can't even pick a favorite out of the bunch. Speaking of favorites, (how is that for a segue?) I love the cutsie fennec fox on the second book!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCatherine

I love the little fox on the second book! So sweet. Whipping out the gumpaste tomorrow--inspiration!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJordan

Since I am horribly bad at time zones, don't even know which one I'm in, here's hoping it's before midnight wherever EST is. :D But as an avid reader of cake wrecks, but never posted before, I humbly submit my first comment hoping to win an adorable zoobook for my kiddos. They would like either one, but my personal fave is the second one. crossing my fingers, but will continue to amuse myself greatly reading cakewrecks whether I win or not.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMom of Many

I am overwhelmed by sugary cuteness.
If I got the Fennec Fox book I would have to faint from the joy of baby critters.
Thanks Cake Wrecks!

OOOOHHHHHHH Zooborn for kids! My 2 yo would adore that--she's obsessed with all things baby!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMargot

That Chthulu is the cutest ruler of the underworld ever! It makes me want to replace all my "r"s with "w"s.

I'd be happy with either book, but my young son would much prefer the one for kids :) Adorable!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTori

Either book would be fantastic! My girls wold love either!

I would love the second ZooBorn book. I read the RSS feed of the website so having the book would be awesome!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLeAnna

comb over...unicorn...I don't think I've ever heard those two words used together, ever....

Love both those books, would be happy to have either one....

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCharlene

Super cute cakes. I really liked the pink hippo. I liked the first Zooborn book.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

My girls would love the first Zooborn book. I personally love the baby Chthulu.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMickey M

I like the baby animal book..so cute!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHope

Having trouble posting. Here goes again ....

These are amazing! The baby Chthulu (or perhaps just a Chthulu getting all dolled up) is amazingly creative. You know that was for the parents as much as it was for the child. I haven't read the Zooborns books but with six nieces and nephews under age 7 (and one nephew arriving in April), either would be an awesome win to have on hand for visits! I also work as a doula and keep kids' books on hands for wee siblings-to-be to read while mom labors, so why not add to the bag of tricks? Side note: I can't wait to search online to find a fennec cake! (The big-eared beauty on the cover of the second book is a fennec and is just made for over-the-top cuteness.)

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChanel

Oh my word! So cute it hurts! Especially that DRAGON! This couldn't have come at a better time either. My baby is turning one on Thursday and we are doing a zoo theme! Oh I wish I could get a cake like this for him!

I love both books!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTeresa

Ooh, I bet my boys would adore the first book.

Meanwhile, I just can't get over how stinking cute that panda cake is.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterkadusey

Very super cute cakes this week!! The Chthulu has to be my favorite!!!

I would take either book, but have a 4 year old and baby on the way who I think would like the first better.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMorgan H

The baby animal cakes remind me of a cake a friend of mine baked which features nuzzling giraffes and said "happy every day". I've wanted to submit it for a while. guess I should have!

As far as books, I would love to have the second book for myself, but I'd also love to send the first book to my sister's family. She is a zoologist and her two boys get to have be best of animal encounters.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMelody

Pick me, I'd love to have the second book!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChristine

OK, My daughter Jenevieve (yes, another Jen) aka 4boys4me, makes cakes for her kids, and they like Cake Wrecks.
I can just see one the boys requesting the Cthulu cake. Why? Because their mom is weird enough to make it for them.
And book two would be fun.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAuntie M

baby animals....my girls would just die for it!!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commentersarah

So damn cute...love the dragon. And, I'd love to win the book for kids.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKristin

I like the second book. I did my daughters bday cake upon request. She thinks it should go on the Sunday sweets. I see a big fat pink wreck! That's for "encouragement" that I too can make a cake! -natalia

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commenternatalia

*love love LOVE* the sleeping dragon! I want it for my bday!

Cuteness overload! but would love the second Zooborns book. My son adores the ZooBorns page.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJenna Lee

Hope I am not to late to leave a comment. Love the blog, love, love the witty quips and would love to have either book! Keep up the great work!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTera

I would totally take the second, since I'm a cute animal loving adult person! (and may I ask for the cake with the lion living in harmony with the rest of the animals as well?)

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterToute La Monde

My daughter would loooove the Zooborns book!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChristine

Oh heck, who am I kidding, I want the first as well. I am practically a kid anyway. My drawer full of crayons and coloring books and my THREE shelves of cartoons and kid movies (out of 6) say the same too.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterToute La Monde

Whoa, 1300+ comments?

I think I'm now at cute overload for the week, but I'm not complaining. Either the first cake or the http://www.san-x.co.jp/suama/suama.html" rel="nofollow">Tare Panda cake is my favorite.

I think the pandas actually make more sense as cake - I've never understoond why they have that "Russian Nesting" look (thanks for the great description, BTW, I'll always think of it when I see them from now on), but it actually makes sense for a layered cake! :p

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterhyphen8

So Cute! I was just looking at the ZooBorns site today and loved the first book for kids, but both are so stinking cute!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKy

Am i too late??
Darn Arizona for not taking part in daylight savings!

I'll take Zooborns for $200, Alex!

My kid and kid-on-the-way love animals. Did I mention yesterday was my baby shower and you didn't get me anything? Shame on you. Shame on me for not inviting you. But, it's not too late to send me a book which the kids will love! please, please, please!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJedi Knight Ivyan

Adorable yes.
Accurate in the description of their diets, no.
Someone by now has surly addressed the fact that the Russian nesting Pandas eat BAMBOO and Blinis, right, not Eucalyptus and Borscht.
I mean only Russian nesting Koalas eat Borscht.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMaggie

LOL: had to add this bit of synchronicity - my PBS station is showing this episode all about baby animals tonight - http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/episodes/born-wild-the-first-days-of-life/introduction/5258/" rel="nofollow">Born Wild: The First Days of Life!

Oh, and not to add to the Epbotness, but regardless of what regular pandas eat, maybe Tare pandas do eat Borscht. I don't read enough Japanese to be able to tell, and Wikipedia doesn't say. :p

January 31, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterhyphen8

We have little kiddos, and would love to win the Kiddie one. Thanks for a chance!

January 31, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKeidi

The baby Cthulhu is just a riot, and oh, so cute!

And these cakes are, as you said, fetching. Wonder if any of them will fetch me some cake?
