What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: So Stinkin' Cute

This week we're featuring some of the sweetest, cutest, most adorable, lovable, um... [consulting thesaurus] darling, bewitching, and fetching baby animal cakes you ever will see. Why? Well, if you must know, I'm feeling a bit sensitive this week.

This is john, by the way.

So, let me just get my box of tissues and we'll do this thing. Starting with Jen's favorite:

Found at the 2008 Orlando ICES Convention; baker unknown.

The hand-painted shading here is amazing. And the animals are adorable. And the lion isn't eating the zebra or the giraffe. So it's a win-win-win.

This cake is slightly more realistic:

Sub'd by Hilda F., and made by The Sweetest Thing Cake Studio

See how the monkey and giraffe cower in fear as the mighty tiger stalks his prey? Can you feel the tension? Can. You. FEEL IT?!?! No?

Maybe it's just me.

And now... sweet sleeping dragon!

Sub'd by Amelie B. and made by her sister Helene

Awwww. Okay. *sniff* I'm all verklempt. *sniff* I promised myself I wouldn't cry...

[blowing nose]

Hey! Look! Pandas!

Sub'd by Aljona and made by KralleCakes

And not just any pandas; these are the rare Russian Nesting Pandas. The mostly eat eucalyptus leaves and borscht.

Preeeesenting, the sweetest giraffe ever!

Literally. I think the lack of neck really adds to the adorabletude, don't you?

And because I have an inordinate affection for tigers:

Sub'd by Jade D. and made by Theresa Gue

So. Cool. Jen says this reminds her of some Lisa Frank folders she had in middle school. Which she claims is a huge compliment. So there.

And you know what else has stripes? (I am the king of segues)

Sub'd by Brenda B., and made by Lilo Taart

I'm digging the bow and the vintage 20's hair part. Just dandy!

And speaking of bows. (I'm on a roll!)

By Aletha B.

Baby Cthulhu!! AAAAAUUUGGHH!! SOOO CUUUUTE!!

And get this: this is Aletha B.'s first cake. Yes, really! Mike, Duff, and Bronwen better watch out, 'cuz Aletha B.'s coming, and she's got a Cthulhu.

And speaking of... cake. (Okay, that one wasn't my best work.)

By Ann N.

Adorable. And hip. Oh. Yeah.

Another of Jen's favorites:

Sub'd by Orna G., and made by Odelia

Hand-painted rosebuds, cuddly teddy bears, and a miniature cake on cake? I can bearly stand it!

And finally, for your viewing pleasure, allow me to present...

a unicorn with a comb-over:

Sub'd by Elizabeth A., and made by Sachi Swick

You're welcome.

awww! the baby Zoo Born book! My 20 month old loves animals! He loves looking at animal books- he sits there and says all the animal sounds. In fact, we were at the grocery store the other day and he happened to see a rather large woman in a light pink shirt and started snorting like a pig! So horrifying! I don't think she noticed, but I tried to play it off like, "oh yeah, that's right! What does a cow say?" Like we were playing some game.... lol maybe we shouldn't get one :)

OMG cute baby animals. you guys are going to be the death of me.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTT

Wow! That's a lot of comments! But, it's worth a shot. My daughter wanted that first book for Christmas, but her bad parents forgot :(.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBabsiegirl

Either book.

And that baby Cthulu is just da bomb :) with mama (daddy?) Cthulu's tentacles protectively reaching up....awwwww.......

Unicorn with a comb-over. Undescribably adorable.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBrandy

Ok you two are amazing. I spent the entire page saying 'ooh! No, THAT'S my fave!" It's hopeless. You find/receive the most incredible Sunday Sweets. I must admit I am tempted to doubt the one tiger is not a stuffed toy ;) but as always I marvel at the talent out there and love the commentary. (adorabletude... That is what the two of you have.)
Re: the books I am perfectly happy to receive either were I to be selected (but like so many of us, 'I never win anything') ;) yeah I'm the whiner that was first to not get your book at your San Diego signing. I fit into the age group of the second book but have a gorgeous new cousin once removed who is as cute as the cakes and would be delighted by the first book.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRbeforeE

Those cakes are absolutely adorable!
And the books look sweet too! I'd be happy with either but my kids would probably love the kids' edition!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKristin Markus

I also like the first Zooborn book, but wouldn't mind winning either one. Cakewrecks gives me so many laughs I don't need to win anything!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle O'Neill

I love it! The baby book is precious.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJoellen

ohhhhh the zooborns!! My toddler would go nuts for that one!f

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAllie

That is seriously her first cake?!?!?!!! Could she please share some of that talent with me? The bestest cake has to be that first one. The little blue lion? A.dor.able!

As for the books? If, by some miracle, you choose me...surprise me. Either book would be loved in this house. :)

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCassidy

The Cthulhu cake was admired by my whole Dungeons and Dragons group, which consists of 5 college guys who eat anything and everything without looking at it. So that's saying something! I would love the second ZooBorns book for my little sister, who loves all animals, but tigers especially.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRayrina

AHHH!! The cuteness is overwhelming!! My kids and I love cute little animals, so the first book would be so awesome to win.

Oh man, that unicorn with the comb over. The nesting pandas!! I can barely stand it!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commenter*sarah*

Thanks for sharing the link. I would like the second book, if I win please!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMrs. B

Oh my goodness gracious, I want a real plush version of the giraffe on the 5th cake! He is too sweet :)

Any baby animals are okay by me!

PS- thank you for making awesome cakes my favorite part of Sunday. Cake Wrecks rocks!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKate M

Oh. My. God. Not only are the cakes adorable (even the slightly disturbing but still AWESOME baby Chthulu), but you're giving away those ridiculously cute books too???? Sign me up for the second one, please!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCourt

Oh my I would love the second book! Baby fennecs are a near-fatal level of adorable.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChristine

I would like the second book. Thanks!!!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMegan

Seriously?! Are those three bears covered in fluffy icing? That is amazing! And Jen is right...that tiger is totally a Lisa Frank throwback!

Oh yeah, I like the 1st Zooborn book!

My 8-year-old enjoyed looking at all the cute cakes with me, and then was excited about the zooborns books. She would love the zooborns book for kids.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBecky

I want the first book please. I'm 6 (almost 7) and I love your cake pictures. I look at them with my mom. Thank you.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCole

I'd love the second book. Or the first! I have five girls -- cuteness overload every day! But they voted for the hippo as their fave. Love the Israeli teddies too!

#4 Everyone knows the Panda eats, shoots and leaves. (Probably not the first to come up with that, but I don't have time to read 1100 comments right now.)

#6 looks really cool.

#8 I thought maybe there wouldn't be a 'borderline' today, but was (happily) wrong. 'Happy Birthday 222'? Must be the 2nd birthday of triplets. One hopes. Although I saw a cake picture over at worth1000 dot com under the heading 'wishful thinking' that said "Happy 200th Birthday, Dad." Which really did 'get' me (miss you, Dad!).

#10 My Sweetheart (ok, and I) like teddy bears. Actually, she loves them; I 'like' them. Just wanted to clarify that. ;-)

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

I LOVE the unicorn comb-over! And Lisa Frank my first thought too...

(and I like the second book.)

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLeona Anne

Baby animals for my baby boy! (okay, so I'm in denial that he'll be 2 soon. But he loves books! And animals! And books about animals!)

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnna B

Cute cakes! And who would have thought of a baby Chthulu cake all cutesy-like? That second book, the one "for everyone else" would be my top pick, if I am the lucky one.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterH, R, E, and C

I like the first one! Also, the baby Chthulu was awesome.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLinda

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

Love the first book!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMolly

I'd prefer the second book. Somewhere along the way I picked up an inordinate attraction to Fennec Fox. So cute with big ears and the eyes and those ears!
Thanks for the chance to win. And for the adorable cakes. Made me smile today. Thanks again.
