What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: So Stinkin' Cute

This week we're featuring some of the sweetest, cutest, most adorable, lovable, um... [consulting thesaurus] darling, bewitching, and fetching baby animal cakes you ever will see. Why? Well, if you must know, I'm feeling a bit sensitive this week.

This is john, by the way.

So, let me just get my box of tissues and we'll do this thing. Starting with Jen's favorite:

Found at the 2008 Orlando ICES Convention; baker unknown.

The hand-painted shading here is amazing. And the animals are adorable. And the lion isn't eating the zebra or the giraffe. So it's a win-win-win.

This cake is slightly more realistic:

Sub'd by Hilda F., and made by The Sweetest Thing Cake Studio

See how the monkey and giraffe cower in fear as the mighty tiger stalks his prey? Can you feel the tension? Can. You. FEEL IT?!?! No?

Maybe it's just me.

And now... sweet sleeping dragon!

Sub'd by Amelie B. and made by her sister Helene

Awwww. Okay. *sniff* I'm all verklempt. *sniff* I promised myself I wouldn't cry...

[blowing nose]

Hey! Look! Pandas!

Sub'd by Aljona and made by KralleCakes

And not just any pandas; these are the rare Russian Nesting Pandas. The mostly eat eucalyptus leaves and borscht.

Preeeesenting, the sweetest giraffe ever!

Literally. I think the lack of neck really adds to the adorabletude, don't you?

And because I have an inordinate affection for tigers:

Sub'd by Jade D. and made by Theresa Gue

So. Cool. Jen says this reminds her of some Lisa Frank folders she had in middle school. Which she claims is a huge compliment. So there.

And you know what else has stripes? (I am the king of segues)

Sub'd by Brenda B., and made by Lilo Taart

I'm digging the bow and the vintage 20's hair part. Just dandy!

And speaking of bows. (I'm on a roll!)

By Aletha B.

Baby Cthulhu!! AAAAAUUUGGHH!! SOOO CUUUUTE!!

And get this: this is Aletha B.'s first cake. Yes, really! Mike, Duff, and Bronwen better watch out, 'cuz Aletha B.'s coming, and she's got a Cthulhu.

And speaking of... cake. (Okay, that one wasn't my best work.)

By Ann N.

Adorable. And hip. Oh. Yeah.

Another of Jen's favorites:

Sub'd by Orna G., and made by Odelia

Hand-painted rosebuds, cuddly teddy bears, and a miniature cake on cake? I can bearly stand it!

And finally, for your viewing pleasure, allow me to present...

a unicorn with a comb-over:

Sub'd by Elizabeth A., and made by Sachi Swick

You're welcome.

Ok, these are all ridiculously wonderful, but I can't get over the pandas. Love!

My mind is adorablown by all this cuteness! I'm so happy nobody ever presented me with a cake like that. I wouldn't be able to eat it and then be heartbroken when it got mouldy.

I'd love the second book, but as a present for my dear, animal-loving, almost-as-sweet-as-the-sunday-sweets aunt in Florida.

I love the little stuffy looking baby animals....they make me melt. The First book please with the baby white tiger.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSarah McNair

Sooo cute!!! I LOVE the unicorn!!! And I love the second book

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJulia L.

The second book with the baby fennec fox is toooo cute!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKelly

I'm not sure what animal that is on the second book, like a chihuahua/fruit bat mixed breed, but I must have it. Also, someone should make a cake of it.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChandra S.

We're animal lovers, so we'd honestly be happy with either book. Thanks for the chance to win!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSarah (Sew Very Happy)

Ooooh, I want a book! I love the first one. But I love them both.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterB

i always love the baby cakes.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

As I see it, the two choices are titled "Zooborns!" and "Zooborns." Of the two, I would love "Zooborns!" But either would do really. Thank you! Molly H.

I live Sunday Sweets. Too bad it only comes once a week!! My kids would just LOVE the first book...and by my kids, I mean ME!!!

Definitely coming back to this post for inspiration for my daughter's 1st birthday in a few months! So cute! I thought the teddy bear cake was adorable! Love it!

PS - Definitely have to go with the Zoo Babies for babies book! :)

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCaroline

I would be so happy with either book, but would choose the child's book so I could pass it along to my grand-nieces.

I love the Cake Wrecks site. Thank you for so many laughs and smiles.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMaryA

I love all the baby books

I have to admit to a big case of cake envy with each Sunday's showpieces.

Admittedly, the cake wrecks you post make me feel very proud of my own work.

Do you give points for honesty?

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterldeberville

Well, we just had our first grandbaby, born to our cake baking kids at The Sweet Life Bakery in beautiful south Jersey! I think the ZooBorn book would be a perfect addition to his library! Please pick baby Berkeley as the winner! And we LOVE both your sites.

Either book! Thanks to your post, I've already planned out my baby shower cake (hippos, unicorns, and giraffes, oh my!)...and I'm not even preggers yet.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCat

I can't choose a favorite! They are so adorable!!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDJ and Jill

The adorableness is overwhelming.

Not surprisingly, there are a boat-load of comments on this entry to rival Noah's boat-load. Nevertheless, I wanted to pay my compliments to the chef(s)... bakers... whatever.
I'm a guy hoping to win a book of cute animals. Leave me alone!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJohn Daniel

I'd take either book. I have 2 two year olds that love baby animals and we love all of todays sweets.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRobin Pennington

Cute cakes!!!
I love the first zoo book.

~Michelle

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMBailey

Cutest cakes ever! I think I may have to copy the Cthulu cake for my baby shower!
I would love either book to read with my 2-year-old, whose favorite things are books and animals!!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMary Claire

ooohhhhh!!! How I wish I could make cakes like these! So adorable and much too cute to eat!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBarb

I don't understand how anyone could cut into any of those cakes with a knife?

I'd prefer the 1st book. My niece is expecting twins in June and I'm working on being the bestest Great Uncle ever (or is it Granduncle?)

wv: rupsim.
I ate too many burritos and now there's a 'rupsim' going on in my shorts.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJeffrey

I think I just melted into my chair....so CUTE!! The Unicorn made me squee with happiness and I would agree with Jen, the tiger looks an awful lot like Lisa Frank. I used to have stationary and folders with the sunflower kittens. =)

Both of the books are absolutely adorable, so either one =)

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAddie G

The cuteness! I'm melting!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKristen C.

such a cute cthulu <3 -Bri

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterbrianna

Awww, they are all sooo adorable. But the Russian-Nesting-Pands were the best!! Soooo cute and just adorable!

As for the books - Either would make my bookshelves look coyyyyute!!!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTammie.Banks

The baby cthulhu made me squeal so hard I scared the cat. The cake tentacles! The pink bows! Aaagh!

Also, I find the unicorn cake so impressive - the cake is adorable, sure, but the fact that it coordinates perfectly with the wallpaper is what really gets me.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterabi

Oh my goodness! My 9yo daughter would die (no not literally) for either of those books.. she loves learning all she can about all living things, even spiders.. eww, just thought of spider cakes.. Any way, love CakeWrecks!!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRae

I'd like the 2nd zooborn book - the one for everybody!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJade

So much squee!

I would adore that first book. Or the second book. You can't say no to that much cuteness.

Pretty please pick me?

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJess

I want to win the first book!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJason & Lizzy

I love how sensitive you have been today! Love all these cakes. I would like either book it doesn't matter to me I jsut want to win!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNona

All the baby animal cakes are so cute! As a Grandmother to 3 little girls I'd love to win the baby animals edition of the books.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKathleen

SQUEE!! Nesty pandas!! So cute!!

And I would LOOOOOVE to share the zooborns second book, the whole family one, with my little ones. They adore you site, begging often for "CAKES! PLEASE!," which only sometimes means eating cake, mostly looking at hilarious cake pictures, thanks to you. My baby, who is two, is somewhat addicted to what his siblings call "the cute kitty site" (Icanhazcheseburger... though I might periodically have to edit the language) and the "baby animals site,: meaning cuteoverload, of course. My older ones love all animals and researching them. This would be rgeat for both the big and littles!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCarolina Nightingale

Too. Much. Cuteness! I love the sleeping dragon! My daughter would love that first book :)

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKatherine

I have two little girls and the Kid's Zooborn book would mean unimaginable squeeing over here! The likes of which you have never heard before! Which is actually a good thing... I promise!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

I was in a really crabby mood... And then I saw the cake with the pandas. And now I'm not in a crabby mood any more.

2nd book

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterEtoile

I'd like the one for kids - I'm going to have a baby in April and I'm sure she'd love looking at the baby animals!

-Amy E.

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

I love zooborns!

January 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRobbie
