What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Getting a Bad Vibe Here...

Attn Parents: This post is not appropriate for young children. Or adults, really, but I won't tell if you won't.

Since I know you're curious about the behind-the-scenes workings here at Cake Wrecks, I thought I'd provide you with the actual dialogue between me and John while discussing a cake.

This cake:

Ready? Here goes.

Me: [calling to other room] "Hey, you don't know any vibrator puns, do you?"

John: [crossing the distance in approximately .7 seconds] "What are you working on?"

Me: "Oh, it's this one. I've got the 'bad vibe' thing going for the title, but now I'm at a loss. What else do you call these things? Do you know any euphemisms?"

John: [staring] "What's it supposed to be?"

Me: "Beats me. It just looks like a giant pink finger."

[both of us pause]

Me: "Hey, I bet that's one."

John: [unable to speak due to laughter]

John: [getting his breath back] "You HAVE to write this down."

Annnnd that's about it. By the way, I feel this is an excellent time to mention that, yes indeedy, we actually get paid now to do this. Living' the dream, people. We're livin' the dream.

Oh, and neither Lis B. nor I have any idea what that cake is supposed to be. However, since it was in the "kids cakes" gallery on the bakery's website I'm guessing it's probably some perfectly innocent character from a cartoon or something. No doubt many of you are preparing to point this out in the comments, too, so that the rest of us look like pervy malcontents. So, you know, I've got that to look forward to.

Livin' the dream, man. Livin'. The. Dream.

With that smile on its long, tubular face, all I can think about is having a "happy period". Sing with me now; "Luuuuv, is a long and slen-der thing......"

it's number one from the number jacks on cbeebies.

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKiki

The second I saw it I knew what it was - it's the number one character from a UK kids show called Numberjacks!

September 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterElaine

I thought it was a baby cake, swaddled or something like that. Obviously, poorly done! But all the other answers are FAR more creative than a swaddled baby, so I'd go with one of those LOL

It is definitely Barbapapa. A cartoon based on a children's book from the 70's. It originated in France I believe. Here is a youtube clip of Barbapapa. Why someone would want to make that cake is beyond me....looks like a large pink maxi!!

Ha, it reminds me of a kitschy phone receiver.

September 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKecen Zhou

It's Numberjack 1 from Numberkjacks - a CBeebies programme in the UK.

September 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKell

Can't really see from the angle of the photograph, but does it have bristles underneath?
Looks like the back of a toothbrush to me!

September 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLisa P.

omg that is just plain creepy
it does kinda look like a finger... in a forest... with no trees... and pink animals!!!

September 28, 2011 | Unregistered Commentercrystal

It's a number one. What a let down.

Too bad it's a children's cake as after eating it, I would like to say "I'll have what she's having"

September 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNatalie

I laughed till I cried just reading the comments. I haven't laughed this hard in ages.

October 6, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJenM

Looks like a birth control pill. Orrrr a maxi pad. Yeah, I'd say it's perfect to have "the talk" with!

October 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHeather

I almost woke my son up laughing so hard at this one! I can see the "vibe" you got! It also does kinda look like a maxi pad like some people commented on. Then i read the comment about how it looked like a cartoon character named Barbapapa and i followed the link to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbapapa
the picture on there is almost as great as this cake!! you should add the pic!

Ummm I used to sell adult toy products, and I have NEVER came across anything this.....umm.....like this. One that looks like that flower on the side sold for about $8.00, so maybe that pink this is the clean up towel???

October 11, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLala

It is number one from the numberjacks. very famous british bbc kids programme.

October 12, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMe

a lady radioactive finger O_O you've got too much lipstick!!!!!!!!!

October 17, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterlily

Femke got it right - see above. My awesome research powers (ok I cut and paste the url into Google Image search) yielded this: http://cakecentral.com/gallery/312393
which tells us what the cake is supposed to be. It's #1 from Numberjacks. Of course!!! (??)

And a further search reveals the source - another creepy computer animated "educational" show from the UK. They have a disturbing need to slap faces on blobbish critters, and make them babble at toddlers. Here's a link about the show.
http://www.numberjacks.co.uk/adults/content/view/108/61/

The actual No. 1 character looks more dildoesque than the cake.
The website tells us some fun facts about our gynelogically inclined friend, who is a 2nd banana character it seems (but take that 3 & 4, you don't got no cake!)

"1 is nice, a bit self-centred and rather immature. She doesn’t jump very much and is still very much at the centre of her own universe. Well-meaning but sometimes the source of the problems, she can make 10 with 0. "

This description really invites more inappropriate comments, doesn't it?

First look before reading the story I thought it was a pregnancy test and they were announcing it was a girl. LOL

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

It's from the UK kids tv show "The Number Jacks" http://www.numberjacks.co.uk/kids/ and yes it's a number "one" :)

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKat

I think it's supposed to be a telephone receiver, like for a teenage girl.

November 12, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSusyQ

I think it looks like a purple tombstone. Maybe for a kids funeral? Or maybe its a purple happy tampon.

November 13, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterFaith

People, people. This is no maxi-pad or er, vibe producer.

Remember, this is a cake. It's obviously a Ladyfinger!

November 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMayRee

The Map from Dora?! That's all I can think of, and even that's kind of a stretch, though, because I definitely thought it was a Maxi Pad!

November 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDani

Ladies! You disappoint me... Learn what a 'giant pink finger' is... not slang, but really one of those things.

November 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Maybe it's Stick Stickley's girlfriend...

November 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterApril

It's definitely "One" from the Number Jacks kids T.V programme, and to be honest who ever made it did a pretty good job, I only saw the thumbnail and was wondering why you were calling "One" a vibrator, oh and yes I have 3 kids so I'm not just a weirdo.

December 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

Maybe it is Marzipan from http://homestarrunner.com/vcr_marzy.html?

December 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDen

Is that supposed to be a worm????

December 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Funnily enough, in Texas they're called "cake toppers" because there is apparently a law that says you can't call them, um...what they're commonly called. :)

December 12, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLindaK

It looks like Numberjack number 1. It's from the kids programme Numberjacks. If it's not that then i have no idea

December 17, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterbarbara

It looks like a giant tampon to me! LOL

December 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHeather

I think it is meant to be a 'Number Jack" a UK kids TV show....it is meant to be purple though, not sure if that would make it better or worse!

Happy earthworm in a garden?

January 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterFizzy

See, now I think I am too innocent. I thought it was a giant, pink, strawberry, yogurt, popsicle thingy. lol. I really must dirty my mind more so I can keep up with society. Too pure for a 30 yr old. I know...I will just read this site more often! lol. LOVE the humor. been reading ALL afternoon! Thanks!

January 5, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterimommi

It's Barbapapa, a French cartoon character.

May 19, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterlinda

I know I'm kind of late but the moment I saw this cake I thought it was Barbabelle, Barbapapa's daughter, even if the shape was wrong and her naceleck was missing, the face, the flowers and the colour reminded me of her. I suppose Barbapapa was never known in the US but those were popular characters for kids growing up in the 70's and later in Western Europe. I hardly recall the show, but I do remember having some books.

http://www.coloriage-1.com/galerie/barbabelle/166.jpg Obviously some kind of wreck anyway.

June 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterM

June 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJenifer

June 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPaula

It's a character from a UK children's show Numberjacks! That's "one" :)

July 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterGhostG

Perhaps this cake is a literal take on a "lady finger"? ...

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAn Cailleach

Errm...maybe it's a finger puppet used in a PSA? SA had this add with talking condoms in (it was hi-larious) so I could see that this could be the spokesperson for maxi pads. It still looks kinda yum, though...

March 15, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterIsobel

Barbapapa!

March 17, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterdecoluvj

Hi All, I realise I have entered this at a very late stage but only just found the website. Love it! Anyway I think this may be Numberjack number 1. Numberjacks was a kids TV show about animated numbers (0 - 9) who save the world but it hasn't been on for a while thank goodness. Not sure, but it looks about right.

March 18, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterEmabell
