What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: WoW

Some of you know that Jen and I are currently geeking out at the biggest geek fest in the south, Dragon*Con. (For the 98.6 percent of you who read this blog but are not, in the strictest sense of the word, "geeks", Dragon*Con is a convention where the majority of the attendees could tell you, without hesitation, the complete works of Joss Whedon and how Jar Jar Binks single-handedly destroyed Lucas' credibility. But, I digress.

This week, we're going to broaden your horizons with something so geeky that even I know nothing about it: World of Warcraft. Apparently, this is a "game" where "players" spend untold thousands of hours walking around and killing things and otherwise forfeiting what was left of their "lives." To do this, I asked Jen's brother Ben, who is himself a recovering WoW addict, to help decipher these cakes. So let's get started, shall we?

(Submitted by Kelly J. and made by Swank Cakes.)

Our first cake is a laptop with a screen-shot of a member of the Horde called the Tauren shaman. We think that the book cake under it says "Shaman for Dummies."

And here's another angle:

"Gold farming" is a term loosely defined as selling imaginary money for real money. Kind of like the stock market, only dominated by Chinese corporations. (Okay, exactly like the stock market.)

(Submitted by Rachel T. and made by Crazy Cakes.)

This next one is actually awesome even if you know nothing about WoW. Since I went through the effort of finding out, however, I might as well share. She is an Alliance Paladin. Or maybe a warrior. Do you feel more educated? Moving on then...

(Submitted by JJ T. and Made by Art Eats Bakery.)

Here we have a bunch of well-made boxes with a chest on top. The only real WoW reference is the red banner with the Horde symbol. I get the impression that everybody who plays WoW is in the Horde (the bad guys) and that the Alliance (the good guys) are all "noobs," or geeks of lesser standing (as determined by those who really are in no position to judge). Got all that?

(Submitted by Tess L. and made by Anne Marie Martino.)

Okay, now we're cooking with gas. This is a shield which has been emblazoned with the symbol for - say it with me - the Horde. Nice woodgraining though.

And finally, we have a cake based on one of the most popular places in the game, the bank in Ogrimmar, the capital city of the Horde.

(Submitted by Jennifer E. and made by Eden Cakes.)

For reference, here's a screen shot of the building in the game:

On a side note, see those itty bitty game people with the colorful words over their heads? Those are your IT guys, your Microsoft employees, and your computer repair people. In short, the folks who keep the internets running and, thusly, control the world. So be nice to them, or someday, when you least expect it, you just might find yourself barred from Facebook. And then what will you do? Call somebody?

A big thanks to Ben, logger of untold hours in Horde-y land, for finally putting all that knowledge to good use.

(Just kidding, Ben! We all know nothing good comes from the Horde.)

OMG love them. Hubby & I are total wowheads (ok him more than me, we are alliance but not teh noobs ;))

Point though, most wow addicts refer to gold farming as the arduous tasks of questing and earning gold to pay for absurdly $ things in game...not the annoying folks who buy gold. We just refer to them as idiots for short lol.

You say that the Horde are the bad guys, Alliance are the good guys... you KNOW you're gonna get in trouble for that... there are many good arguments that say that the Allies are the aggressors and bad guys...

For The Horde!!

I had to hide this from my offspring or they will al want one. We are a WoW family. Go ahead, say we're setting a bad example raiding on weekends or something, but let me tell you, WoW time is a great motivator for homework and chores.

We are mostly hordies, but one of ours seems to prefer alliance. I don't know what we're going to do with her (KIDDING)!

I always enjoy your site, but when I saw the WoW theme I knew we would all be in for a great treat.

OK, too funny, I'm a cake decorator AND a WoW Widow - I'm actually tempted to create a wreck-orated cake just for this very game...but of course it'd be on purpose.

"the game" is crazy, and as I type this, my Dearly Departed is saying ---WoW cool cakes! (of course...)

www.widowsofwarcraft.com (my online diary of being a widow...LOL)

Thanks Cakewrecks for finding the inspiration my dear husband thinks is to be his next birthday cake...

WOw I am most impressed by the lap top that was broken through! Did a non professional really make it or was it made by a non horde?
I still have no idea what that came is about or why it is even....

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMiss Daphne

So, can anyone explain why the figure on the breaking out of the laptop cake has a mortar board (aka graduation hat)on its head?

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMiki

I just have to add another pro-Alliance voice. There are most certainly "noobs" in both factions, just as there are good players in both. Some people get WAY too into the "My side is better than yours!" debate. Make sure you take everything a WoW player says about their faction and the opposing one with a large grain of salt.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKelsey

The Horde tends to attract the braggarts and troublemakers, not necessarily "pros."
Feel free to visit the following website - http://www.realmhistory.net/arena-statistics/battlegroups/5v5.html. Blue numbers represent Alliance teams, red numbers Horde teams. Note the even split.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commentertara

AMAZING!!!!! I LOOOVE these cakes! however you did get some stuff wrong, the Horde aren't "the bad guys" niether side has much good from it. Also, statistically there are A LOT more alliance players :p among other things. Anywho, the new design is amazing! Great job!

i just don't understand why people who play wow are considered huge nerds. Honestly - my better half is the biggest scariest trekky i know and I consider him a nerd lol. I will be waiting out back for all of you to stone me rofl.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLauren

I had a sneaking suspicion there were a lot more of us "WoW addicts" that frequented your blog than you might have expected. Love the cakes! Love the new look!

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle S.

For the Horde!

Us Horde players totally didn't need another reason to be superior to Alliance, but only one of those cakes was Ally... enough said.

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterduhbell

Ok, I'm about to let my geek flag fly! (be kind)

A few years ago before I started playing, I created a WoW themed birthday for my hubby. I printed out out a quest scroll and had him answer WoW related trivia; If/when he answered them all correctly he gained entrance to Onyxia's Lair.
The awesome bakers at my local grocer made an edible image cake with the lovely dragon herself amidst yummy flamey frosting. His cutting of the cake symbolized his "slaying" of Onyxia. His gifts were in gold foil covered "treasure chests" which were various WoW/Blizzard related items.

Needless to say he loved it! The ladies in the bakery had a lot of questions for me when I went to pick up the cake.

Yeah, so why no Alliance love huh?

Oh my gosh!! I'm at Dragon*Con right now myself! In fact, I am reading this post in my hotel room in the Hilton. Awesome to know you're a fellow geek!

Awe and amazement over that first cake.

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

WoW, you people,

First off, I know nothing about WoW except:

1. My brother-in-law used to play it for sixteen hours a day only stopping to work, sleep and poop. Thus the "life" joke. Kidding!

2. People dressed up in WoW costumes at Dragon*con carry exclamation points on sticks which I actually think is pretty cool.

3. I avoid WoW for the same reason I avoid drinking, gambling and prescription drug use: I will get hooked on it and it is probably not in my best interests.

So, in closing, thank you for clarifying all those things in my post that need clarifying but it was all meant in good fun. You guys (and girls) are sweet, brilliant and know how to laugh at an uneducated stereotype.

Hey give us Allies some love. That faction prejudice goes both ways.

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTiger

I made the 2nd Cake. It was a UT graduation cake for a WOW addict. That explains the Graduation cap. It was 100% edible as the screen was Cherry flavored pulled sugar (hard candy). The keyboard was chocolate cake. The character was Gum paste. This was an earlier cake I did prior to starting a cake biz.

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCrazycakes

Hey now, not all of the alliance are n00bs :( Some of us-who are actually adults with lives-play for the alliance (because our friend chose that before we started playing). And we even have jobs and lives and such... we just don't bother watching tv anymore and play WoW instead.

that all being said.. nice cakes :)

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNimnyn

So, I see from previous comments that I don't need to give you the correct spelling of Orgrimmar. Whew! I never have time to play anymore, but it's a lot of fun when I get around to it. I like the pally jumping out of the laptop the best--although if anything jumped through my screen I'd squash it.

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGhost Rider

Fab cakes yet again.

Was surprised to see you had written this though, and not a guest writer, you seem to be a bit over your head with this one, and the jokes weak.

Ah well guess you're busy with everything - heres hoping the quality comes back soon!

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Love the cakes.

I played WoW for about 3 months. Then I decided that while fun, the regular subscription fee was too much to justify. I can see why it's adictive, I just didn't get addicted.

From what I could tell, the pepole who play the horde tend to be more helpful and generaly freindly when you are new. My brother says that's because they tend to be older, but I'm not sure where he got the information so it may have been a guess.

Spicy, there's plenty to do that isn't about leveling up. Also, my friend says if too many pepole reach the highest level, they'll just bring out more levels. I'll beleive that, since it's kind of in their interests. It only gets boring fast for some pepole. That should be evident form the fact that there are such high levels.

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

@Spicy: There are loads of EndGame things to do like raids, instances, and trying to gear up. My whole family plays (Myself, my husband, my mother-in-law, and we even have toons for our kids). *I* am not as hooked as my MIL or my husband, but I still think it is fun.

Can't wait until the release of Cataclysm!

Oh, and yeah... these cakes are AWESOME! Oh, and Jen? I am pretty sure the toon bursting out of the laptop is an Alliance human Paladin. :D

FOR THE ALLIANCE!! (and no, I am NOT a n00b!)

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterB

You could easily just post the pictures without the condescending tone. Just sayin'. They're some awesome cakes though.

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Oh, Jen... *sigh*

Gold farming isn't the act of buying gold. It's the act of trying to raise gold. There are gold farmers, though, who then sell that gold for real money, which is against the law in China now...but that doesn't seem to stop them. Actually farming gold, however, is not wrong. We have all done it at some point. How else would you get your epic flying? Geez. :)

That is a human paladin bursting from the computer screen.

Not all people who play Alliance characters (or "toons") are noobs. It really depends on your server. On mine, the Horde players are all 11-year-old boys. The adults play Alliance characters. :)

Also, Ogrimmar is just ONE of the capital cities of the Horde. This capital is the home of orcs and trolls. They also have Silvermoon City, Undercity, and Thunder Bluff. As an Alliance player, though, I could have missed one. We stay away from those places. :)

@Spicy, it's not just about leveling. Once you hit 80, then you can raid with your guild. I think if you were on a public server, you would see what else there is to do in the game. Yes, it's addictive. I said I would NEVER play. I mean, I'm not that geeky... yeah, my boyfriend plays. It started off as a way to spend more time together and it was a cheap date. LOL. I'm as addicted as he is, though, but we like different parts of the game. He likes to kill stuff and I like the social aspect. :)

Anyway, Jen, you might be surprised, but we aren't all your stereotypical dorks! :)

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterClandahlina :D

I'll spare you the "Orgrimmar" correction, but "gold farming" is the act of grinding for hours to earn gold. The act of Chinese people illegally hacking accounts and selling the virtual proceeds is called "gold selling". Also the Horde are the good duys, the Alliance are formed of genocidal racist freaks ;3

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I'm trying to be good and do my homework and not log in and play my Orc Hunter.

I agree with where is the Alliance love, currently my only lvl 80's are all Alliance.

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterYiota

As a WoW playing, Mac using librarian, that first cake is full of win! The shield cake and the paladin cake are amazing. Thanks so much for the roundup. Have fun at DragonCon!

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRowan Fairgrove

@ Crazycakes

Thanks for the clarification. I thought maybe it was some sort of faction symbol... of course, as it -is- a UT mortar board, it is one after all.

*gets out dice, pencils and paper*

Anyone for a round of Chainmail?

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMiki

For the Horde! I wish I could get a cake like these for my husband's birthday. Unfortunately, I don't think any place near me is capable of making anything other than regular cakes with the little plastic figures on top.

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNina

Proud warcraft gamer chick myself. The cakes were fantastic representations of the game! Showed my hubby and he was impressed too!

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAngel

WoW cakes! I'm so torturing my local baker asking for one of these :D

I'm actually surprised that EVERYONE I know either plays WoW or dates/is related to/knows someone who does. And some players are people I never thought they could be ('cause they looked "too cool" for that). So, WoW is not only for geeks :)

For the Horde! (I'm a Blood-Elf Rogue :)

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEstivalia

I know the stereotype is just for fun -- that said, I'm always amazed by the diversity in WoW. Our guild (top guild on horde side, working on Algalon) has 2 doctors, 2 lawyers, consultants, a data analyst, 2 engineers, a rocket scientist (no really!), 2 graphic designers, a 3rd-grade teacher, an 11th grade teacher, a community college professor, full-time moms, students (of course!), a project manager, etc.

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

OMG these are so awesome lol! I found this site via Crowdeye and I'm so glad I did. Thanks for the laugh. I am a hardcore WOW fan...

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterWoW Strategy

I should have had that delivered to my husband.
After I left him because of his W.O.W. addiction.

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Regarding the 4th cake down; this was my wedding cake. I'd just like to note that the banner is not THE only WoW reference; the chest is modeled after the chests in WoW and each "box" is done in leather and wood grain to match textures found in many Horde cities. The leather lacing and rivets are common armor texture and the teeth that adorn the cake are modeled off the teeth on the shoulder armor of the Orc guards in Orgrimmar. We met in WoW and put a lot of thought into the design of this cake and I just HAD to make this clarification. I love all the other cakes, nice work!!! Just got back from DragonCon.... goodnight! Thanks JJ, love ya. ~Auntie Laura

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Hey folks-
Read that? They met IN GAME. It doesn't really get better than that. Also, first person reference, the cake was delicious. Mmm, wood grain.

Glad to finally see it featured!

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterjj!

Yep @anonymous. Of my circle of pvp friends, there is a rocket scientist, two doctors, a navy pilot, a network television actor, and a professional poker player. A group of us migrated to our server from another game which had an international player base. I have played with people from Denmark, England, Japan, Canada, Australia, Holland, etc. My current guild has a doctor and a physicist, some farmers, and many homemakers and college students. All circles play WoW... not just the stereotypes. ;)

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle S.

Those cakes really made me say WoW! Can't believe how geeks are really creative. Actually, I didn't know those are real cakes if you haven't mentioned it. What I thought is those are some sort of World of Warcraft figures.

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterwow gold

FOR THE HORDE!
...No one's said it yet. Just representin'.

As an avid female WoW player (Shadow Priests = love :3) I grinned from ear to ear when I saw the Org bank cake. Ahhhh, even the mailbox is there! Yay for geeky bakers :3

I love the new site design, Jen! Made me "wow" in surprise ;P

September 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I've never had any interest in WoW, but I'm a long-time DragonCon fan. I haven't been in a couple of years but I already have plans for next year. I *would* have gone this year if I had bothered to read the guest list. Freaking William Shatner was there this year!

Know nothing about WoW (except that it exists and is a huge timesink), but man, that exploding laptop is the ultimate.

September 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMelissa (& Billy)

Those are awesome! For my birthday last year, my sister wanted to get me a WoW cake, but since she couldn't afford something really cool(plus she doesn't play so she wouldn't know where to start in designing one anyway) she bought a ready-made cake from WalMart and wrote "Your World of Warcraft Cake!" on top of it in nasty cake gel. I enjoyed the joke and appreciated that she at least had the idea of a WoW cake, and it was a great birthday.

September 8, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterblagger

Actually, there are tons more alliance than there are hordies. On our server? About 75% alliance, 25% horde, and there is always some stinkin' gnome or space-goat shammy tinkin' my ores. I think horde folks tend to be older folks with jobs---the kind who can afford to order cakes.

I roll horde because Thrall is hot. *grin*

I LOVE the wow wedding cake, LOVE that the person whose cake it is found this entry and commented, and now I love this blog.

September 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJoshilyn Jackson

I would just like to point out that because most of these cakes are Horde cakes, the Horde players are the "noobs" as they are more obsessed with a computer game they must shout it to the world with a cake. We, the Alliance, are much more subdued with our addictions.
Eternal enemies aside, these cakes are amazing!

We enjoyed making the "laptop on books" cake. The joke is that the "Shaman For Dummies" book is sooooo thick. You can view a clearer angle of the book on our blog and website. Thanks, Cake Wrecks, for posting the cake!!
