What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Tuning in for 80s Cartoons

Sunday Sweets is my weekly NON-Wreck feature, the better to show how wrecky the Wrecks really are.

I'd like to say today's post will remind many of us of our childhood, but if you're like me you were probably watching some of these into your teens. (I especially loved Animaniacs in high school. Aw, great, now I'm going to be humming "Pinky & the Brain" all day. Dum da dum da dummm...)

First up, ZOINKS! It's Scooby-Doo!

(By the Cake Fairy, found by Margery S.)

And the Smurfs, too!

(By Sweet Treats, found by Jessica M.)

(By Nati's Cakes, found by Dorothy.)

Go Go Gadget Cake!

(Hand-painted by Denise at Cakes for You.)

How about a little classic cartoon violence? You know you miss it!

(Made by Karina's friend Cathy, who is not a professional!)

Now, some of you are going to take issue with the fact that this next one is a wedding cake, and therefore potentially worthy of ridicule. Still, it made me laugh, so I'm posting it. So there.

Cowabunga, dude! They even made a female Mutant Turtle for the bride topper - that, or they stuck a wig on an action figure - I can't quite tell. Either way, it's hilarious, and nicely done.

(I've had that pic on my hard drive forever, and have no idea whose it is. E-mail me if you know.)

Even ThunderCats gets some representin', and by Snarf no less!

(By Have Your Cake and Eat It, found by Laura.)

And lastly, you know how I've been badgering y'all to send me a Snorks cake? Well, my lovely Wresksistant Anne-Marie took it upon herself to surprise me with this last week:

Once I stopped laughing, I had to ask her how she even did this. You've got to understand: Anne-Marie is the best cook I know, but she's not a decorator. So considering she free-handed and decorated this using nothing more than a few tubes of store-bought icing, I think it's pretty darn good. And sweet, since she just wanted to ensure the Snorks were present in today's post. I just wish she didn't live on the other side of the country, so I could have had a slice. [crossing arms & pouting] Hmph.

Of course, AFTER Anne-Marie made that one, Pennie K sent in a more official Snorks Sweet:

She tells me she made it for her own birthday. Isn't it cute?

And yes, I AM happy now, thanks for asking.

I'm actually watching the snorks right now! LOL! Love the 80s cakes!

I forgot how much my brother and I used to love Thundercats as hildren! And I never missed an eposode of Scooby-Doo. Happy memories. :)

There was a female Ninja Turtle for a short time. Her name was http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus_(Teenage_Mutant_Ninja_Turtles)" REL="nofollow">Venus. She stared in one of the many cartoon series, but she wasn't around for very long.

"but if you're like me you were probably watching some of these into your teens."

I'm STILL watching some of them! The advent of all our favourite old TV shows on DVD is a wonderful thing! I have the Animaniacs and the Tick, and I spent $170 on the ginormous shiny box set of the Real Ghostbusters...

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMorgi

Don't be too hard on the Ninja Turtles as a theme for a wedding cake. It's simply melding popular culture with the ancient belief that the world rests on the back of a giant turtle. The loving couple simply want their marriage to be based on such a strong foundation! Right? Besides, it could have been worse. It would have been the Herculoids.

Wow! Those are all great! And I have now officially been a contributor!

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterkarina

oh my gosh! i LOVED the smurfs as a kid. then i watched it again recently and it seems to have lost some of its charm... i don't understand! it was so cool!

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered Commentervery married

The Fraggle Rock cake from last week is still the champ but I LOVE the TMNT wedding cake. Even if it is snark worthy.

It is YOUR wedding day and if you want to celebrate ninja turtle love then why not?

I want to see a JEM cake. So much wreck potential.

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered Commenteramroyo

I would love a TMNT wedding cake.

Back in 1986, we had a friend in college who was a huge Inspector Gadget fan, because she loved Don Adams. Her birthday happened during one of the breaks, so when we all got together again, we gave her a cake with his image that said, "Happy belated birthday, Lori. Sorry about that."

OK, "Sorry about that," was a Get Smart catchphrase, but she was thrilled.

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTychaBrahe

Super cool cakes for today! The Snorks make me happy too!

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered Commenter:::b r a n d i:::

that wedding cake is the sweetest thing I've ever seen!

I've got to watch the Snorks. I've never seen it!

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSophia

Loving the TMNT wedding cake! The only way to make it better would have been if the tops of the layers were decorated like manhole covers. Makes me wonder if they color coordinated the rest of the wedding - can you imagine the bridesmaids' dresses?

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTiff

I'm sorry but that last snorks cake looks like it's made of play-doh. ew.

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDNfromMN

Those are awesome. Now where's the Schmoo cake??

I push the button!

I don't think Anamaniacs was on before I was in high school, but I was a huge fan. I worked in an animal lab throughout my undergrad and had two pet rats named Kinky (bent tail) and The Brain that I sneaked out in the early years.

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterdp

Wow! So many memories! Thank you! I was watching the Animaniacs in my teens and 20s and LOVED them, too. Remember Freakazoid? That one was fun, too.

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterQueen Rosebud

My childhood is coming back to me! I used to watch Scooby-Doo every single day after school. (I still watch it sometimes. xD) And the Ninja Turtles and animated Inspector Gadget! They were awesome. I still love Pinky and the Brain...

Thanks for this trip down memory lane. ^_^

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterChey

I vote "FRIGGIN' SWEET!" on the TMNT wedding cake. That definitely belongs far away from the "wrecks" category!

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGeeRome

What, no Animaniacs cake?

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Even though I spent my early years in the early 90s I loved inspector gadget and get smart. Although I must point out that Scooby Doo is actually a 1970s cartoon, and tom & jerry have been around since the 1930s (although some my favorite cartoons of T&J were made in the 50s/60s) although I thought that the Tom & Jerry cake had to be the best!

Would these really qualify as 80s?? I mean I was born in 1991 and i grew up on most of these shows too. LOL! love 'em either way

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBittersweet

More cute cakes this week!

TMNT cake should have had April on the top!

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Uhm...what's with the matchsticks surrounding Snarf? o.O

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSharon

I'm nearly 18, and I remember most of those from my early childhood...I loved the smurfs, and I was sad when they weren't on cartoon network anymore. Most of what aired after that was awful anyway....so yeah. The smurfs were good.

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHannah

Brilliant! Of course, now I'm going to be running around going "Snaaarf" all day...

Given the recent wreckage, I'm surprised we haven't seen a He-Man cake -- y'know, to redeem the genre of "Cakes Modeled After Rippling Torsos."

SUNDAY SWEETS!

Hoooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGlory von Hathor

Those smurf cakes/cupcakes are amazing! I want one!
And the TMNT bride has more than a wig... it looks like they gave her cleavage, too! Haha. Shame it makes her look like a body builder.

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnne Marie

I loved Animaniacs too, but I have trouble watching it now that my college roommate dated and married the kid who did the voice for Skippy the Squirrel. It's too weird.

I don't know if my roommate reads this blog... I guess I'll find out now. :)

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

I always felt like the Snorks were underrated, being in the shadow of the Smurfs and all. I'm happy to see the Snorks get some recognition in the form of a yummy dessert!

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCarlyn

Ohhh! I love the TMNT wedding cake! it's fab XD

Aww man, one time I saw a mystery machine in a thrift store that looked like that cake, hahaha!

Not only am I still watching these, my kids are. I love 'em.

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJess

Great call on the wedding cake--it's adorable! I wonder if there's a backstory to why the couple chose it.

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I love the Inspector Gadget one...=DDD

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAja

Tom and Jerry cake! It's so cute and cartoonishly violent! Man, I used to love that show.

And I'm still wondering where the She-Ra cake is.

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterElectrogirl

Great cakes :) I loved the Smurfs as a kid and Scooby Doo (the newer version sucks now, though). I LOVED Schmoo and Captain Caveman. That last cake is the cutest!!! Holy 80's flashbacks, Batman! The Animaniacs seriously seemed like a cartoon for adults with the guise of being for kids (lots of jokes that adults would catch, but not kids). The Mafia Pigeons were too funny as well.

My 6 year old son is now heavily into Pokemon now. Would LOVE to see a Pokemon cake!!!

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTrish

Not so bothered about most of those, but Snarf did it for me.. i loved the Thundercats!

I want that Snarf Cake!

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKaishay

Ok, I TOTALLY loved today's post! So many great cakes... and great memories. :)

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMommyAmy

I don't know about anyone else, but I wouldn't mind doing 80s Sunday sweets for the rest of the year! I loved the Smurfs and Inspector Gadget.

Please let us know when you find an Animaniacs cake. I watched that show in junior high, and I still love watching it because now I get the jokes that used to go over my head! :D

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I know a couple who would totally have had that TMNT cake at their wedding!

Love the Smurf cupcakes (cookies?) but WHERE is Azriel?

I DEMAND ANIMANIACS! (I briefly dated a guy who did a spot-on Wacko and knew ALL the lyrics to ALL the songs - off to Amazon to find that CD...) Morgi, marry me. Or at least burn a copy of them for me. please? "o)

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterErica

I only know these characters because our daughters watched all these shows...but I have to say that I think the Ninja Turtle wedding cake is my favorite.

As always...Sunday Sweets are always so much fun.

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterwolfmom

I love the Thundercats cake!

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHolly

I can't believe that Tom and Jerry cake isn't professional! She should be a professional, if you ask me! Great work!

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMichele

I need to show that TMNT wedding cake to my brother. He is still obsessed 25 years later. :)

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJenn

Snorks! I'm so glad that they haven't been forgotten :)

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKristen

Animaniacs was the BEST. I watched it obsessively, and was thrilled to get the entire series on DVD for Christmas this past year! (Before that, I actually had a bunch of episodes on homemade DVDs that someone burned off of the TV somehow, thanks to my also-Animaniacs-loving best friend who contacted the person and got copies for both of us.) You should find an Animaniacs cake if possible-- that would be faboo!

March 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBecky

TMNT cake is great!! I would love to see a Voltron cake. Of course, He-Man and She-Ra would be cool, too.
