What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Avengers, Assemble!

Greetings, Wreckies. I know you've been waiting for some Avengers Sweets, and here they are! Brought to you by me, Lindsey, the least qualified person on earth to write about the Avengers. It's a movie? With superheroes? Something about a hammer? Don't hurt me.

Right then, I'll just fake it. Here we go.

One of the original Avengers, as everybody knows, was Wolf-Spider-Man.

By Andrea's SweetCakes

No? Not a real thing, you say? Well, it should be, because I would be way more afraid of him. Wolf spiders are TERRIFYING. (The cake is 100% cute, though!)

(PS: Spider-Man and Wolverine actually were original Avengers. See? I do know a little something.)

(Ok, fine; only because Jen told me.)

And here we have Thorn and his mighty meat tenderizer!

By Don Buciak II

I kid, I kid.  I've actually seen Thor, and I even liked it. (Chris Hemsworth, what?)

And what I love about this cake is not just the fantastic frosting graphic, but also that it doesn't have the typical birthday-cake script. That's a Thor-approved font, I'd say.

Who's the leader of the club that's made for you and me? (If you and I happened to be superheroes?)

Submitted by SuperChunks and made by Royal Bakery

Captain America! He has ever so neatly popped out of this cake to save the day.

(He is the leader of the Avengers right?  He's, like, in the middle of all the posters at least.)

(I really need to see this movie.)

Look, I can name most of them. Here we have Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, don't know, don't know, and whats-her-bucket:

By Sarah Trefny of Klickitat Street

But enough about me: let's talk about how amazing these cookies are! Smoosh your face up close to your monitor and drink in all that detail. What a shame to eat them!  My favorite are Hulk's little toes. Nom.

And how could you not love Hulk's fist punching through this cake?

By rebbateman

I like the bricks flying out from the sides. Simply smashing.

For this next cake I consulted an expert on all things Avengers: my ten-year-old son, Blake.  However, he was appalled that Thor was using a binky, and exclaimed "Thor is like, the second-manliest one of them all! They should have given the binky to Iron Man!"

[Note from Jen: I just sprained something laughing. Please thank Blake for me. And ask him who the first-manliest is.]

By HummingBread

I tried to explain that this was a cake for a one-year-old, but by then Blake had stomped away in disgust.

Good thing, because I don't know how kindly he'd take to these Hello Kitty Avengers.

Submitted by Sarae B. and made by Animated Cupcakes

But, seriously, aren't they the most adorable things you've seen all day?!

Stop.

Mjölnir time!

And I also spy Captain America's shield, and ... a defibrillator?  The All Spark?

I have no idea what I am talking about.

[Note from Jen: It's Tony Stark's arc reactor. Never change, Lindsey.]

And finally: Avengers, assemble!

By Cakes with L.O.V.E.

Blake has informed me that Thor's hammer should not be on top, because it would smash through all the other layers. Hmmm. That would be a shame. Better pass that piece to me.

Have a Sweet to nominate? Then send it to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com!

@Major Ypres (*salute* Major Ypres) - But the ARC reactor 'plugs' into Tony Stark's chest. Batteries are sources of power and I've never seen one with an outlet.

Better get some info from Blake before the Epcot happens. Or our minds explode from the suspense. My vote for manliest is Captain America. Hawkeye is the most 'normal'/un-altered of the guys, but he's no Cap.

Hawkeye is the last superhero. I had to click on the link because it was bugging me not to know all the names. Figured I'd share in case anyone else is as CDO as me.

Obviously, Black Widow is the manliest. Duh!

Love the cakes.

WOO HOO!!!!!! Does this make me the first baker to have both a Wreck (See "It's Rude to Stare") AND a Sunday Sweet???? I totally want a trophy or a medal, or something! :))) Thanks so much for featuring my cake today!!!! -Kate

I just HAVE to brag on the best cake wreckerator in the whole wide universe! Kavingate (aka: Kate the Amazing) made the Avengers cake for my son's fourth birthday party last year (basically a year and a half ago now. I know, we're totally ahead of the curve, we're just *that* cool). I love her to death and she totally deserves to be in a Sunday Sweet, in fact for a while now every cake she has made for me I tell her that it should be Sunday Sweet-worthy. Because, you see, Kate has also been wrecked; she did the amazingly done, but disturbingly themed belly cake made w/ red velvet (it's what she was asked to do! and she did it so well too). So she is not only the first person to claim her wreck, but now the first person (that I know of) to be wrecked and sweeted. She should totally get a prize. Or a post dedicated to her awesomeness. Because she is the most awesome person ever. Seriously. Like, make a free wedding cake for the doctors receptionist because they didn't have a big wedding awesome. Email me if you would like some more pics (or stories) of her awesomeness (though I think most, if not all, are on her flickr page). CONGRATULATIONS KATE!!!!!!!! YOU TOTALLY DESERVE THIS!

Ok, I have official confirmation. I just asked Blake who the manliest Avenger is. Answer: Hulk. When I asked him why, he looked at me incredulously and said, "He just IS."

LOL @Di, love the Gunsmoke reference. Don't worry too much about it giving your age away though. It's a classic western and still gets plenty of play on TV Land. My 13-year-old daughter loves watching it with her grandpa, though she prefers The Rifleman and is hoping to have a gun like Chuck Connors' someday.

@Major Ypres: No, Tony would be fine. He replaced the original arc reactor in the first movie, and *very minor spoiler* replaced the replacement in the second movie. I also wouldn't be surprised to find out he'd made a spare, after everything that's happened.

I second John's "Wait, what?". That's taking EPCOT in a direction I don't even want to go. I'll be in the lab. Family filter on the computer is ON. C ya!

Hello Kitty + Avengers = AWESOME 8D

I wouldn't eat them though XD

@Peggy: I totally agreee with you. I never cared much for Hawkeye in the comics, but Jeremy Renner made him beyond awesome in the movie. Swoon indeed.

I love the way Cap pops out of that cake. In fact, I love everything about this post, including the comments. Yummy and funny. :D

Not sure whose wreckporting I enjoyed more, Lindsey's or Blake's!

June 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKayne

I really need to see Thor. Also, all these cakes are cute!

June 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterErica

Awesome post, Lindsey!
I never read the comics, but am a HUGE fan of all the associated movies (have seen "The Avengers" three times, already). These cakes are just the right touch of sweetness. The baby Cpt. America cake for FOX is just perfection!! He's my favorite Avenger (although, he and Thor need to have their shirts off more so that I can decide for certain!).

;-)

Love Blake's responses, too! Ha!

I JUST GOT IT!!!! 'NOM-inate' - CAN'T BELIEVE IT TOOK ME SO LONG. Light dawns on marble head at last. I'll never be able to say that word out loud now, it's will always come out as 'om, nom, nominate'. LOL :)

So I'm NOT the only person who hasn't seen the avengers movie? SWEET!! (Although I'm probably the only 12 year old.)

June 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKarateLady's Daughter

I agree with your son....the binky should have gone to the hulk....these are the awesomest cakes! I'm a Thor fan!

June 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterVictoria

Loved this post. It's good to know I'm not the only one who has only a small clue about the Avengers. But the cakes are impressive. Love Sunday sweets. Thank you for this blog. I love it <3 Love love love. :-)

my 4 year old got the 1 year old cake he said look a baby thor. but asked why thor had a hammer and not a rattle. his fave was the second cake and the cookies.

June 19, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKatrina

Just for giggles RE: Thor's manliness, and ability to remain very grrr in all situations there is a story in Norse mythology where Loki steals Moljinor and gives it to a giant, in order to retrieve it Thor dresses as the giants bride and takes the hammer back, and still remains a super manly god! seriously look it up!

June 21, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAngel

It's your fault for not knowing comic book heros. Nerds, like me, know who these people are and most of these cakes make sense. I will say that Thor with a pacifier does not make sense.

June 21, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTrue Geek

The cookies are from top left to right is Capt. America (Steve Rogers), Iron Man (Tony Stark), the Hulk (Bruce Banner), Thor Odinson,( alter ego on Earth, Donald Blake), Bullseye (crazed assassin), Nick Fury, director of S.H.E.I.L.D. and last but not least the Black Widow, (Natasha Rominov). Avengers Assemble!
