What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Truly Outrageous

Last week Katie S. e-mailed me a truly outrageous story of glamor and glitter, fashion and fame.

It was about her sixth birthday party.

"I don't remember much from the party, other than it was 1987 and my first "kid party," with all the kids from the neighborhood invited to play games like drop the clothespin, pin the tail on the donkey, etc. - but I do remember walking into the kitchen as my mom and aunt surveyed the birthday cake they'd just picked up from the local bakery."

At this point Katie tells me she heard words from her mother and aunt that her little 6-year-old brain couldn't quite comprehend.

Which is perfectly understandable, once you realize that Katie's mom asked for the 80s cartoon pop star JEM:

"Jem is my name, no one else is the same...JEM!!"

And got Beavis being attacked by a small purple Yeti:

"Trolo-lo-lo-llooo!"

To give this an audial analogy, that's kind of like expecting this:

And getting this:

(I dare you to watch the whole thing without crying.)

Oh, and did you notice that I managed to find the exact napkin design from Katie's party? Did you? I AM GOOD, y'all.

No, the guy in the video isn't deaf. It isn't the real audio. Someone overdubbed it. Find the real version and listen. He is singing.

Ah Jem. Great memories.

And the video clip of that guy was like a train wreck. I knew I should, but I just couldn't look away!

February 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterGrace

I try really hard not to be rude about other cultures and sound like an "ugly American" but that guy baffles me. I thought it was performance art until I read the comments. I did check out some other videos but couldn't last more than seconds into them. He makes Pat Boone and Lawrence Welk look cool (yes, showing my age)!

February 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

My brother and I sat through the Trololol video laughing our heads off.

But seriously, I used to watch Jem all the time. This is sad.

February 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBatman

Dare accepted. I laughed until I cried. Who is this man? Russian writing at the beginning...Did he work for the KGB torturing people? I can only surmise that it was television like this that made the Soviet Union collapse! That was a devious way to brainwash and torture my capitalistic mind. Cold war indeed! Very cold!

February 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMarnieB

Wow JEM! I'm going through my moms attic. There has to be a picture of another classic 80s wreck somewhere in there. Rock on JEM!

February 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterFsurica

Jem was awesome! I learned very important things from Jem, like not to get into a stranger's car and not to take medicine that isn't mine. I guess my parents also told me this, but they weren't as cool as Jem.

February 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterclipsnark

Oh how I loved Jem. Got the doll and stuff just don't think I had a cake of her lol. If I did I sure don't remember it. As for the videos I was too scared to watch the guy. And judging by comments probably with good reason :).

February 4, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

The weird thing is, that edward khil lipsynced the original video, and this version is way better syncronised, so it looks so real, it would make the misfits whimper in a corner and suck their thums. If jem only knew what a powerful weapon she could have had if she sang like that!

February 4, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPien

Didn't watch the Trololo I've scene it to understand Paul and Storm, and Wil Wheaton

That's it. *throws towel down angrily onto table* I'm seriously annoyed that these bakers consider themselves artists! Look at those arms?! How did they even THINK those arms were representative of a woman's arms?! *flail*

February 4, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterwildmaven

YUCK! How could you do that to our ears Jen? For penitence you have to put up the real trololo guy video on monday (with the cakes and humour you can provide of course ;) ) ok in reality I just want to see what kind of post you would make to incorporate the trololololo guy, he's awesome! way more awesomer than Jem. :P

February 4, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSam

If you liked Trololo guy, you'll love having that audio dubbed over a scene from LOTR...

At least.. you used the Trolololo video for a reference and not.....

February 4, 2012 | Unregistered Commentereviltone

Oh my fish. I did cry. I also am dealing with a small asthma attack from laughing so hard. Am I weird that I actually love the real trololololo guy better than Jem?

February 4, 2012 | Unregistered Commentervelda

That was seriously strange... I didn't cry, but my eight year old daughter started to! And not because she was laughing, that guy scared her to death! I'm sure she'll be up with nightmares tonight...

February 4, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkmac

Ok, I do not comment often but I must say that this video, being 2 minutes and 41 seconds has to be the most unproductive 2 minutes and 41 seconds of my life (even worse than losing my virginity lol) I think I lost 241 brain cells and 2 years and 41 days off of my life span....Why on Gods green earth would someone even waste the time to post a video like that to be found to begin with....WHY WHY WHY....I need therapy now! Bahahahahahaha

February 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMeg

And now the Jem theme song is stuck in my head. In the Best. Possible. Way.

Loved that show as a kid! Thanks for the awesome 80's memories!

February 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHairproductjunkie

He looks the "Bob" from the Enzyte commercial.... **shivers** I'm scared...

February 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMaraphina

I made it a minute and a half on the second vid. No tears, but my lunch is coming loose. I kept thinking, "He looks like he's rehearsed this!" Hard to believe it was deliberate!

February 5, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermouse

the Jem video brought me good memories... the other caused that I smashed my head against the wall

Beavis attacked by a purple Yeti!!!! LOL XD

February 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPaty

I think the first time I watched trolololo guy, I cried I was laughing so hard!
My favourite is Saruman trolololo - I still get the giggles watching this!

Thanks for sharing

February 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEm

I adore the Trololo video. It makes me laugh so hard I cry nearly every single time.

February 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCalamity Wren

My 6th Birthday, in 1987, I ALSO had a Jem cake.. However, until this moment, I thought it was TERRIBLE!!! (My mother made it, and cut that same Jem out of a paper plate and laid it on top.) I would have to say, at least it looked like Jem, and was chocolate fudgy delicious..

February 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDawn

Awww, Trololo. He's the only Edward for me.

February 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLisa

Truly, truly, truly, outrageous.

February 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTaric

I posted that link on my FB account and got the same reaction: "I don't get it". I had to explain that the audio was dubbed over the actual footage. And that Lawrence Welk was probably waiting in the wings. With that said I did cry from laughing so hard.

February 19, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEirekitten

Thanks for the biggest laugh I've had in a long time with these videos - truly hilarious. Love the blog, keep 'em coming!

February 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSheryl

I'm sorry I couldn't watch all of that video. I can only endure so much pain!

February 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCandace J.

Just watched the video with my 16 month old son...he LOVED it...although I thought really odd...really, he was clapping and hitting the screen screaming!

February 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAshley

You do realize that is NOT the original sound for that song AT ALL right?

March 4, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterVictoria

Oh, I was such a huge JEM fan back in the day (I'm a year younger than Katie, the victim of the birthday cake). I would have been upset about this cake!

As for the video...I have an earache and my left ear is plugged with cotton to hold in the pain relief drops, but it didn't block out the audio. It looks like Russia's answer to The Lawrence Welk Show, except this doesn't pass for singing. When he did the spin-around with his hand in the air...I had to stifle my laugh. So ridiculously funny!

Love your site - I'm a first time visitor. I will definitely be returning!

March 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAllison

Can I just say that I ave been singing the "trol lo lol lo lol song in my head forever! I love that when you search for him on youtube you can type in "weird Russian guy singing and this comes up. I show him to lots of people just so I can forever ruin their life and make them sing this forever! LOL I love how he shows off his range!

March 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNicole

He's making my brain hurt!

March 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTamara

Where in the world did you get that second video? And why is the audience cheering? That is Odd!
Perfect comparison. Whoa!

March 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLKK

why are they applauding?!?!???????

April 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCory

I have to agree with many of the previous comments. Esp the two about SNL doing that as a skit, and the Dr. McCoy from Star Trek, She's dead Jim (Jem). LOL

Seriously though! WHAT was that?! If he didn't blink his eyes so often I would have said he was a Russian Robot!

Scary!

April 17, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkimrogue

OMG... I totally love you. I've been giggling my a$$ off since I watched that second vid. I only discovered the Trololo guy fairly recently, and I was totally taken by surprised by the take-off. That was sheer genius.

I'm STILL giggling. Thanks!!

I've never posted here before, tho I've been lurking for years. This one, I HAD to say "thanks" for. :)

April 30, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTickleddragon

Hahaha! My 10 month old daughter found that guy hilarious!! Me... just bewildered

May 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterShell

There are so many altered versions of the Eduard Khil video out there, it even took me a while to find the true original. It's odd, but not nearly as odd as the one in the post. Here's the real thing: <href a="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEHXDUE2h48">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEHXDUE2h48

My baby burst into tears when she heard the guy singing.

March 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJemfan

Very disturbing video. I wonder if I'll be able to go to sleep tonight.

March 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterChris

Guys -- that video was overdubbed as a joke. The singer is Eduard Khil, a renowned Russian baritone. Here's the real thing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEHXDUE2h48

March 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBob

OMG ~do you think Mr Bean was watching?

March 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAJ

Okay everybody, this is a CollegeHumor video, not the *actual* voice of Eduard Khil, a.k.a. The Trololol man. He can actually sing quite nicely; well he used to anyway, he passed away not too long ago. He became somewhat of a celebrity in Russia after the original video went viral . RIP Trololol Man

March 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBrandy

You're right, I couldn't watch the Trololol video without crying.. with laughter.

April 6, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterElli

Jen...my husband and I have been huge fans of Cake Wrecks ever since we stumbled upon your first book in Borders (back when it still existed :( ) and made the staff and customers nervous from our cries of laughter and nearly passing out on several occasions. On top of that, I constantly visit your site for a fun laugh. I have to say, this is your BEST POST EVER!!!!! We near passed out from laughter until we couldn't take it anymore! Thank you, sincerely. We really needed that today. :)
