Sunday Sweets: Getting Crafty
Today on Sunday Sweets we are exploring the world of crafty cakes. And when I say "crafty," I don't mean like "Hey, that is some serious cake craftsmanship!" I mean actual crafts. With yarn and stuff. Woo!

That's not to say that this caliber of crafty cakes doesn't require craftsmanship as well. I mean, you are looking at a pair of edible scissors!
(Note to kids: please do not attempt to eat any household scissors.)
I should also warn you not to eat crayons either, as my son once had to have a chunk of crayon surgically removed from his lung, true story. But cake crayons? Now that's a cake of a different color! Har.

I could totally make this cake. Except for the paintbrushes, tubes of paint, exquisitely detailed painter's case and palette. But the blobs of paint, yeah, I could totally do those.
And now, please hold on to your socks, because they are about to be knocked off:
Hey, check for holes while you're down there holding your socks, because I wouldn't be surprised if this thing could fix them, it looks that authentic.

Sew AMAZING! Prize-winning ribbons are just piling up around this cake left and right!
Submitted by Sarah M. and made by The Sugar Syndicate
I hope Rita enthusiastically high-fived whoever made her this amazing cake, and then told them appreciatively that the "embroidered" name was an extra-clever touch.
Have you noticed that ruffles are slowly overtaking the world? I've seen them on shower curtains, pillows, headbands, diaper pails, birthday cards – you name it, some crafter has ruffled it. So why should cakes be left out of the fun?
They shouldn't!
Simply beautiful.
And I'm quite sure that this perfectly pleated cake is prettier than my entire wedding dress.
But not all crafts equal ruffles and buttons and flowers, no! Sometimes crafting has an edge to it. Yeah, that's right. Real dangerous stuff. Stuff like ...
broken glass!

Spotted at the 2010 Boston Flower and Garden Show; baker unknown.
Like a mosaic! On a cake! What a brilliant combination. Say it out loud: "Mosaic Cake!" It's like it was always meant to be, much like my favorite snack, peanut butter and butter. Don't judge.
Or how about this Mondrian-inspired work of edible art?
Submitted by Vanessa M. and made by Colette's Cakes
Or this stained-glass masterpiece:

I don't think I would have the heart to eat this. That would be like going up to Da Vinci and being like "Hey man, great job on this Mona Lisa. Really beautiful. Mind if I lick it?"
Well, that's all for now! See you next time, and don't run with the scissors!

Wow! I'm more than blown away. As a crafter, these cakes speak to my heart and the first one is spectacular. The detail on the yarn is amazing. I'll have to show my spouse as inspiration for my upcoming birthday. (Ha, like that'll happen). Then you show the sewing box and the sewing machine and the Mondrian cake (the cake stand is awesome too) and finally the Tiffany cake - just exquisite! Such skill is priceless (and I'm sure the cakes were almost priceless to purchase too). Swoon...
They are all great. However, I spend a LOT of time making ribbon roses and a lot of time making things OUT of ribbon roses... so you can guess which of those cakes is a favourite!
sometimes a photo elicits a big shout of excitment and sometimes quiet awe. you had both kinds in there. then, the lick the Mona Lisa comment made me laugh so hard I snorted. :)
I love the Singer sewing machine cake. I can even make out the bobbin winder! Want. Totally want.
Two-ply textured yarn FTW! WOW!
Anyone that could cut into these works of art is just plain cruel lol that or hungry. Either way I wouldn't want to eat them they look too lifelike. Wow.
I have eaten peanut butter and butter sandwiches my whole life and never once thought that it was strange. I make them for my boys everyday so they think it is normal too. The school tuckshop makes it the same way also, so I am sure the practice will spread quickly to the next generation.
The sewing machine isn't cake either, it's styrofoam...still impressive, but I thought you'd want to know.
[Editor's note- That's entirely possible since often, sculpted cakes are either styrofoam or rice crispy treats. I didn't see that info on the baker's site, though, so I'd love to know where you found it. -john]
That crayon one would be a lot cuter without that freaky little Liza Minnelli doll sitting on it!
The yarn in that first cake is grade a amazing! It looks like actual yarn! And that Singer sewing machine - there were different models with different little designs on them, so I don't know if those are entirely accurate. But it is so detailed and such a great representative of the old fashioned Singer look. I would just die if I got a cake like that! (But not until after eating some. :D)
Thanks for posting these awesome cakes.
Pity we can't 'like' comments. Hanna Solo would get one for the Princess Bride shout-out.
Wasn't wearing socks today, but still had an amazing time looking at all these cakes. Gorgeous swoonworthy craftsmanship, each and every one.
those are just amazing! -Molly
And the Sunday Sweets post was signed by Lindsey, not Jen or Jon... She's the one that posted the Sunday Sweets about furniture-cake.
Your son?
Did I miss something?
Holy buckets! The sweets just keep getting sweeter! The detail of that yarn basket, and Singer sewing machine blew me away, but the Mosaic and Stained glass cakes are beyond awesome!! My jaw is still on the floor. I'm in complete awe of those who create such works of art... Simply awesome.
Those cakes are SO awesome, I'm only SLIGHTLY disappointed there are no scrapbooking cakes!
The mosaic cake is just beautiful! I also love the artist's box and paints set, the singer, and the cake that looks like expensive stained glass! Can you even begin to imagine how long that would take?!
a bunch of those look like they have real yarn on them. unless had said so i would've thought it was yarn.
Awesome!! Each one of the cake looks the best. Cant take my eyes off...great workmanship exhibited in all. Cheers to all of them who made these cakes.
Beautiful! These are just beautiful!
AAAAAAAAHHHH! I WANT those first two!!!! I'm an Uncontrolable knit-a-holic and LOVE crayons!!
By the way, those all took INSANE skills. My jaw dropped at the sewing baskets and stayed there. wow.
On her blog, she says it's polystyrene (styrofoam's British name, right?): http://smallthingsiced.blogspot.com/2010/11/vintage-sewing-machine-2.html#comments
I thought I was the only person who ate peanut butter and butter sandwiches! Actually, I had one for breakfast today.
Now about the cakes...I can't believe some of those aren't real crafty things. I think my favorite is the sewing machine.
I have a Singer just like that! That cake is incredible.
The pictures of the cakes above are great. It shows the makers creativity in styling the cake. I plan to study on how to make designs like this as well. It's quite appealing to look at. I really love this post!
Mind if I lick it? LOL!
Oh my ears & whiskers! Absolutely speechless.
The cakes are fabulous! That stained glass is just amazing. I am in awe.
Peanut butter and butter on rye toast and a glass of milk. My favorite evening snack. Tasty and sticks to your ribs. I didn't know anyone else ate Pb&b either. Small world.
These are the most AMAZING cakes I have ever seen!!
some of those arent cake.
