What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Taste The Rainbow

Who says you have to have a white wedding? These bright beauties are proof you can have your color and eat it, too.

Daisies are red, violets are blue...

 By Sweet Disposition Cakes

Okay, before we head to the Epcot bunker: they're actually hand-painted poppies, and they're beautiful!

Orange you glad I found this gorgeous cake?

 By iHeartCakes

Such a great color. Everything should look that cheerful.

Or, if that's too much orange (never!), here's a way to stand out with classic black and white:

Look at the little bows! Clever, indeed.

This mellow yellow is a stunning way to add some unique detail:
By The Couture Cakery

Okay, those may actually be daisies.

Still, I'm a girl who wants more bang for her buck:

By Superfine Bakery

BANG!
I love the vintage feel.

For a more elegant style, this bakery muted the colors and added more feminine detail:
By Criollo Cakes

Those piped pearls are divine!

If this doesn't make you green with envy, I'm not sure what will:

By Bella Cupcakes

Wedding in the garden, perhaps?

How about a classic design with a kick?

By Pink Cake Box

Going green has never been more tasteful.

This blue beauty was inspired by sun-printing:

By Once Wed

Totally mod - and what a cool technique!

Moving down the spectrum, these violet violets are just adorable on a modern cube cake:

Made by BethAnn at Studio Cake Design

Simply beautiful.

And if you can't decide on just one color, why not use them all?

By Sweet Element

I love love love this striped summertime sweet. I only hope they used Fruit Stripe gum for wedding favors.

However, I don't think I've ever found a wedding "cake" I love more than this:

By Maki's Cakes

Rainbow-colored cake spheres? Roy G. Biv would be proud!

They didn't actually *use* sun printing did they? Because, you know. Cyanide.

Hi, Jen! I just wanted to say congrats on your move and make a dumb observation... since the font on your captions isn't the same as the old site, it almost seems like it isn't you "talking." Anybody else feel that way, or am I just a weirdo who's obsessed with fonts? :) Anyway, keep up the great work - LOVE this blog and Epbot! :)

Barb,

You're killing me! I spent like 6 hours with my designer making sure the font was exactly the same, both sites open, looking back and forth.

"I don't know... I think the L is a little fatter... did the G have that little squiggle?"

Of course, today's post was written by Number 1 so that might be where the feeling is coming from.

Anyway, thanks for being awesome.

1. Those cakes are GORGEOUS.
2. Are you ready for me to be a stinker?? The orange cake puzzles me. The flowers are FLAWLESS...and the symbol on the disc looks like a BADLY botched treble clef. Am I missing something?? Is it supposed to just be an S?

Sorry. I told you I was a stinker. I love these Sunday cakes, though!!!!

Fruit Stripe gum makes me happy! :)

(and congrats on your new digs!)

I like how the post is available above the comments now; before, I opened a second instance in a new tab so I could refer back as needed.

@gormster, never assume. ;-) "Odd flavor... Was this made with almond extract?" "Er, yeah. Almond extract. Yeah, that's the ticket!"

@Aunt LoLo, I thought the same thing about the orange cake, but I didn't want to say anything. I finally decided the design was a snail. I don't know why there would be a snail on a wedding cake. Maybe they had a really long engagement. Come to think of it, this cake would be perfect for my wedding.

You may have been asked this already, but have you ever thought about a database of trustworthy cake decorators so we don't end up with a wreck? So if I was looking for a wedding cake in Atlanta, it would be easy to find a trustworthy decorator?

As a University of Virginia alum, I must say that I think the third cake is NAVY and white (with touches of orange), not black and white!

Now,
these
are dasies!

I really love the 'cake balls' reminds me of something I tried previously with my marshmallows!

John,

I think it's really really really close but maybe just a teeny bit more squat than the last font. No biggie at all, didn't mean to trivialize your hard work - I love what you guys do!!! :)

LOVE the geeky science ROY G. BIV reference!

When I saw that last cake, an imaginary audience in my mind went, "Oooooh!"

August 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGiGi from Austin

I'm guessing the Temari cakes were made like this: http://cakecentral.com/gallery/1523981 ? Her book's supposedly coming out soon! I really love the blue cake; we did sun prints every summer as kids!

Hah, finally I can come out of the closet as a long term reader of this blog and fangirl of the awesomeness that is Jen Yates by saying: That second cake is actually a repost! Yes, I believe you managed to be completely repost-free for over two years, which is pretty impressive for a blog that updates daily.

P.S.: I love you guys!

The poppies are stunning, the photo paper is wonderfully creative, but oh the spheres! I adore the spheres!

August 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMin

Thanks for this post - the cakes are gorgeous! I am in the process of planning my daughter's wedding (or, I guess, WE are planning) and looking at these just whets my appetite for the day when we choose a cake. I love, love, love the temari balls and checked the website: they cost 11 pounds each (I don't know how to make the British pound sign) which is about $22 a piece. That's per person, like a zillion dollars for the whole wedding. eek! I think we'll stick with a standard layer cake and hope we find a baker that doesn't make Simpson cakes. (see Tues. 8/9) Love your site!

August 9, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterphysicsmom

Oh. My. God. These are AMAZING. THIS is how I want my wedding cake.

August 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKaija

The first picture is a cake with poppies on it, which are red... They are not daisies. And I think it is stunning!

August 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSarah Jean

You have a bunker?

August 14, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKate

I absolutely love all the cakes but in particular the blue cake, it is just beautiful and unique. Did she use a stencil and airbrushed it?

August 18, 2011 | Unregistered Commentercakeaholic

I'll be honest with you, the orange cake is gorgeous except for the little design in the circle. To me it looks like a really bad backwards treble clef.... I can't get over it!

August 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBonnie

Wow, ALL of these cakes are truely amazing! I went throught the pictures trying to find my favorite one but they all have something special about them. Cakes such as those would be something wonderfull to have but they all most are to pretty to eat!! But if they taste as good as they look i wouldnt be able to resist myself. Very talented!!!

August 29, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterErika Thornsberry

really hard to believe that those are actually cakes that you can eat! i cant even imagine the time that had to be put in to make even one of those cakes!

September 1, 2011 | Unregistered Commenteralishia

All the above cakes are gorgeous, I absolutely love 'em all. Obviously the 'spheres' cake was to my taste the greatest, although I think it is also nice to have in a kids birthday party or something a bit fancier like 'Bat Mitzva' for a Jewish girl.....The spheres though I would make them smaller as I suppose one sphere is equal to one cake portion.
The cakes above was definitely NOT wreck cakes.
Thanks to you and all the people who sent the photos.
