What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Dreaming of Dragon*Con

As you know, John and I were at the ultimate geek gathering, Dragon*Con, last weekend.

[wistful sigh]

Ah, how I miss my people.

Fortunately, I have this week's awesome Sweets line-up to help heal the hurt.

By Nicole D., an amateur baker. (!!) Found here.

Beware the Cthulhu, a monstrous creature of gargantuan size which evokes terror in all it encounters!!

He also likes ice cream.

Made by Rebecca H, another hobby baker, and based on the artwork "Cthulu's Day Out" by Ursulav.

You score 10 geek points if you can correctly identify this next cake:

By Jane's Cakes

A better angle:

Did you get it? Did you guess Disc World?

Yes?

Wow, you guys are GEEKS. Yeesh.

:D

Here's a close up of the top:

That's all sugar! Oh, and it was a wedding cake.

Yep, these are my people, I tell ya.

Who out there remembers these?

Excellent.

If you're familiar with my other blog, Epbot, then you know one of my current obsessions is steampunk. Steampunk was also huge at Dragon*Con this year, with a fashion show, exhibition, and enough costumes to make this geek girl giddy.

So, imagine my glee when I saw this:

By Pastrygirl

Awww yeeeeah.

I'm not sure who this next chibi character is, but she's fondant-free and absolutely adorable:

I still can't get over the fact that Don uses nothing but icing to get that incredible shading. Wow.

[Update: I'm told this is "Saber from Fate Stay Night." Here's hoping that means something to somebody out there. :)]

And finally, a fitting homage to Dragon*Con:

Detail shot:

And that's it! Thanks very much to all of you lovely readers who found us and said hello last weekend; it was a blast meeting you! I can't wait to do it all over again next year.

Have a Sweet to nominate? Then send it to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.

That dragon is AMAZING! I want to order it for my hubby!

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTiffany

I'm not geeky enough to know what Disc World even IS, but what struck me about the piece is that it looks very much like "Turtle Island," which is what some First Nations groups call the Earth, to describe their own myths about our world..maybe that is where Disc World got the idea... it is a rockin' cake too!

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered Commentermizdarlin

Looks like the comments are turning into this into another "Epcot" post!

Did you know that chibi character is Saber from Fate/Stay Night?

XD

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered Commentermichelle

So, where can I redeem my 10 geek points? ;-)

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSusan

Ohhhhh, The Great A'Tuin! That's amazing! I am starting to plan my wedding and sort of wish I/we were a little more geeky so we could have that as our cake :-D

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTamsin

I totally got the Discworld cake.

I was at D*C too and there was much steampunk-related swooning for me.

(Is that Mur cake for Mur from I should be writing?)

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSaraT

Smile, I'm currently watching that series. I was certain she was Jeanne D'Arc...she's King Arthur? :gonk: WTF?

Yay for Terry Pratchett-based cakes. XD

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJen

It sure is weird that no one knows who that chibi is. *grin*

That discworld cake is amazing. I think my favorite of the geeky cakes featured here so far. Just awesome.

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMeg Spencer

That Great A'tuin cake was AMAZING. I can't believe the detail! And the elephants! And a;osidhfadigouhbadfgkljh I need one at my wedding! Or at the very least, a little Death of Rats serving a normal cake with his scythe.

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Every day at D*C, I became more convinced that steampunks have more fun than any other geeky subculture. You didn't mention it, but the steampunk ball was by far my favorite late night party of the convention.

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterChristy Admiraal

Great A'Tuin! Thank you so much for posting that incredible Discworld cake. Every single fan of Cakewrecks who loves it for it's humor & intelligence needs to read Terry Pratchett's works, if they don't already. Seriously folks, you will love his stuff.

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I love the shopping Cthlutu cake. Ancient demons like to spend money too.

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBree

Help! Can some of you CW fans give me a Terry Pratchett substitute? Now that I've read all the books (some several times), I need to move on to another smart/funny author. Any ideas for me?

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterThe Nolans

LOVE the discworld cake (and I'm not even a dedicated Pratchett fan. Unlike everyone else in my family. And the Steampunk cake - now that looks like a cake you could eat, I doubt there is much more than bones in the (beautiful) dragon!

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterShirley

I didn't just guess Discworld; I shrieked "DISCWORLD!" If I ever get married, that will be my wedding cake. It is decided as of today.

*is overflowing with geeky love*

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKatey

That last cake? HA!!! WROOONNG!!! No dragons at Dragon*Con!! I read all your blogs, looked at hundreds of pics. Liiiaarrr! (channelling Valerie from "Princess Bride").

Anyway, nice cakes, Dragon*Con looked fun and cool, but, seriously...THERE WERE NO DRAGONS! ;p

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKfirah

Wow, a Hellboy cake! I wouldn't have expected that character to get the cake treatment...and by an amateur, at that. Impressive!

I used to love playing Space Invaders on my cousins' old Atari when I was a kid.

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Now I want to break out my Discworld books again.... And eat cake!
I was so caught up in the dragon, I didn't even notice Bilbo. Or perhaps he was wearing the Ring when I was looking, hmm?

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJasry

*steals Great A'Tuin when no one is looking* >.>

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterksaldria

Awesome! I knew the Discworld cake right away--I've been tearing through all of the local library's Terry Pratchett books lately. That is really, really cool.

WV: marin. The giant turtle is part of the local marin life.

those joysticks!!! and the little ghosts are too cute

You guys think Dragon Con is the "ultimate geek gathering" on Labor Day weekend? Try PAX Prime, the 60k+ in attendance gamer convention that happens in Seattle that same weekend. It's really not very far from Portland, I suggest you guys check it out. Or maybe try PAX East that happens in Boston during the spring so you could still go to Dragon Con. It's smaller than Prime, but should have the same feel.

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I'm deducting 1 geek point from you for misspelling Discworld as two words. I'm very ashamed.

On the other hand, that's a really good Great A'Tuin. Clearly I need to find someone to marry so I can get a cake like that.

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAlex F.

Discwo-- DAMMIT! YOU BLEW MY POINTS BY ANSWERING IT.

Ah! A manga cake! I must admit, I'm not familiar with that anime, but seeing that a chibi in CAKE FORM could be accomplished made my day, since I've wanted to eat Tachibana Kanade's face for a long time. Points and a virtual high-five to whoever can identify who that is!

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I now seriously want to cry that I have never had, and probably never will have, an amazing A'Tuin cake. I love the dragon cake, too, but to someone who's life motto might be "De Chelonian Mobile," it's hard to beat anything Discworld, let alone something that amazing.

The Nolans - have you checked out Neil Gaiman? He does tend to be darker than Pratchett, but he still makes me lol.

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterskcallahan345

I don't know which is my favorite- the dragon or the atari!

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJessica (aka Faeanne)

DISCWORLD!!!! Four exclamation points being the sign of insanity!!!!

Ahh, I love those books (Death rules). Awesome cake! :)

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRiley Joy

Ah, the good old days of cheesy arcade games. Check out this piece of nostalgia.

This was my first year at D*C and I can't wait until next year already!

Where were you located? There was so much to see and do, I spent most of the with my friends in The Weyr over in Vinings. Next year I will be moving around more and hopefully will find you.

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterev

YES. I want that steampunk cake for my birthday.

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNerd Tootsie

Thank you for posting my cake (Cthulhu)! Since I sent you the photo over a year ago, I was sure it was never going to make the Sunday Sweets cut. You made my day! I'll make sure the cake recipient and the artist know it's here as well.

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterr-is-for-rose

And, since nobody has mentioned it, I'm thinking the Cthulu birthday cake was for Mur Lafferty. But her birthday was in July so perhaps not. hmm... Anyway, thanks to combining two of my favourite things - D*C and Cake Wrecks. This was my 8th D*C and it's always awesome.

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterPretentious Wombat

I'm a big fan of steampunk, and I want that cake for my next birthday!

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered Commenteraimee_not_amy

Steampunk? *worships*

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I completely forgot to breathe when I saw the Discworld cake! Then I started pointing frantically at it while yelling, "For my birthday! For my birthday!" at my husband. It's PERFECT!

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

That chibi character is Saber from Fate/Stay Night.

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDiane

@SaraT Yup- that was my birthday cake from July 2009, a most awesome present. Rebecca is a BIG CW fan.

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMur Lafferty

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterarchersangel

My sis & her hubby were there and even looked for you! They had probably as good a time as you did! Oh and the #1 cake is in the #1 spot for a reason. Love Big Red!

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJude

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMelanie

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterpastrygirlpdx

Dying about that Discworld cake! Too cool.

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJessi

Very happy to see Smaug and Bilbo.

Thanks for the links to Steampunk @ D*C on your alternate blog. Love the fashions.

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Need more love for the Hellboy cake -- that is awesome!

The only thing that would be better would be a side of pancakes to go with the cake.

Or maybe a cake made to look like a stack of pancakes...

And, of course, the Right Hand of Doom!

September 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterStressfactor

Aaagghh!!!!!!! I will DIE if I don't get a Discworld cake like that for my birthday! I've read all his books SO many times.
