What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

I Think the Baker Used Too Much Oil...

I hate to jump on the BP-bashing wagon - and I hope you'll forgive me for being crude - but this sarcastic eco-wreck cake was simply too slick to pass up.

Thanks to skooksie & craftylildevil for spilling the...beans. By the way, I hear cake goes great with Texas tea.

UPDATE! Today, we have a special treat for all our RSS readers: an ad wreck!

Isn't it ironic? Don't ya think?

At least they're not whispering it in your ear.

(side note)It's kind of pointless to even respond to trolls. It's not like they will respond back. Trolls nearly never do.

(topic) Ugh! gag gag gag... that cake looks like it would take a month going through you...

LOVE that this is the ad that showed at the bottom of my Google Reader display:

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNow That's A Trot!

I think I would like to meet the person that made this cake. Like, I wonder if they do this for every crappy event in their lives, almost like a diary. Hmm...cake diary, now that's a grand idea!

Oh, and my two cents--this totally sucks for all the people and animals down there. We were supposed to go to the Alabama coast for a family reunion but had to cancel because of the oil. The amount of revenue those people are losing is astonishing.

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKerri Dandurand

Hey Linda,

Oddly enough, and because I've met so many of you on our book tour, I usually assume that the readers of this blog and especially the commenters are well educated, thoughtful individuals. I assume, for instance, that Anonymous is probably a regular reader who is concerned that we're going down the political road and this concerns him/her.

I'm also aware that people tend to say things in an especially harsh way on the internet because they don't think anyone is listening and it's easy to hide behind the label of anonymous. The bad thing is that we read EVERY comment and usually take them to heart. And just so we're clear, Anonymous never intended for that comment to be published. He wrote it with the sole purpose of hurting us and making us feel bad. Kinda stinks.

Ah well. The life of a blogger.

For the rest of you, please know that we love and appreciate each and every one of you. You make it worth it.

john

I'm just curious as to whether the Baker lives in the New Orleans area, because I totally want one of these to bring to our Convention staff meeting this weekend (Our annual con is in Biloxi, on the beach).

People can complain about the politics of this cake all they want, but as one who lives in the crosshairs of this mess, I can say that this cake perfectly sums up the way many of us feel about the situation.

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRob the Webkahunah

Mmmm. Black icing. Not.

I have a picture of my son from a soccer party when he was 6 with black hands, black face, black teeth...and later on, well. Yikes.

I'd have to hack that end off and throw it away. I'm sure it would sliiiide right on in to the trashcan.

I wish our other messes were as easily cleaned.

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterConstance

...and the ad that showed up in the newsfeed was for a dividend fund to invest in the oil and gas industry. Got to love google ads sometimes.

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I don't think it's a "wreck" but I'm not sure I want to eat it. So it's "art?"

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNewsCat

I would like to know the baker's inner monologue here...
"I bet someone out there wants to throw an oil-spill party! They'll need a cake!"
Random.

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMaribe

That anonymous person saying the cake is political obviously has been living under a rock. HELLO! OIL SPILL. *shakes head.
I'm glad people are representing some of this stuff in cake form. =) Spread your thoughts. They should be doing more to get that oil out of the water

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSarahSarah

I love it...and I don't see the problem that people are having for Jen & John posting it. Maybe the "wreckiness" of it is where's the beach? It goes from water to grass. I live on the Gulf, in Florida, So I can very much appreciate the good humored stab at this horrible situation -- whoever you want to blame for it. To the people complaining...if you want to debate then go to a forum for that. If you want to "enjoy" the cakes then stay and laugh with the rest of us.

AWH, thanks John (the hubby of Jen)! Just keep the wrecks coming.

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterStella

If cake is the new waves of political protests, count me in! I'd much rather have political dialogue in tasty, frosted form than in shouty, angry signs and pundits form. :)

(And for the record I have a cousin who works on oil rigs out in the Gulf just like the one that had the explosion. Yet I still cracked a smile at this cake and post.)

I agree that this may be the most appropriate use of black icing ever and that the real wrecks may occur after eating...

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnne

Isn't anyone else bothered by the fact that this appears to be in a display case among other confections?!? I mean, apparently, some baker thought to him/herself... "Hm, the case needs...something. But what? What's missing? What haven't I done? What do my customers WANT?!?.... Hmmmm......... Ah HAH!"

BTW, Jen, this is my first post, and I just want to say THANKS! You brighten my day, every day. :)

WV: amagn: can be used in place of imagine and/or amazing. "I can't amagn what possessed this wreckerator to create (or should I say re-create) this disaster! Simply amagn."

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle

EPCOT!!!

Whiners, STFU. I love this blog. It makes me smile. Thanks, Jen & John.

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterUlrike

I love that cake! It's just as good as the Blue Tarp Christmas Village that sprang up in Lakeside Mall after Katrina. And while I'm not keen on black icing, it makes for a great touch in this case.

According to a local blog, the cake is from the Breaux Mart grocery store in New Orleans.

And both BP and Transocean are at fault in this debacle...and that's all I will say about that here.

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJacque

Maybe they should present this cake to Congress. They're the ones that won't let the companies drill on land where they can do it more safely and a spill wouldn't have the environmental impact it does in the water. Can't wait for gas prices to spike again. Thanks, Congress! and here's to black icing in your teeth!

@ Anon #1, you make good points, but this was not an intended political commentary (Jen even prefaced it with a disclaimer), but it is a wrecky cake. And it IS her site.

@ anonymous #1.... someone is a humor Nazi

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Awesome RSS feed add! Stay Classy, Cake Wrecks!

(Also my word verificationi word is "PHORT." Which just amuses the heck out of me for some reason.)

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterEG

It's brilliant, I love it. Anon, get a grip, this isn't a politicized attack cake.* I think you can have a sense of humor about a very bad situation like this without being disrespectful. This cake's in the same spirit as a hurricane party or that batch of Nurses' Week cakes Jen posted recently.

*Is anyone else picturing a cake with large pointy teeth now?

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterkar131313

Personally, I like black icing (frosting...whatever haha) - it's fun to freak people who weren't at the party out. What baffles me though, is who throws a party for an oil spill?

Oh, and I'm glad I'm not the only die-hard fan that works Alanis Morissette's lyrics into every situation I possibly can... ;) although I'm probably just delusional when it comes to her songs, sorry.

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLisa

Usually the part I love most about cake is the frosting but I think that is one cake that I would probably scrape off the frosting and only eat the cake...

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLisa M.

So funny, saw this and came here to email you about it..and there it was!

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMiss Didi

oh, and apparently the picture taker saw this for sale at a local grocery store in New Orleans--it wasn't commissioned at all, just inspired!

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMiss Didi

Needs plastic shorebird flotsam.

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSharon

Hey, J & J,

1. WHY should YOU feel bad????
Did YOU make the cake, and was it made to make FUN of the disaster?
2. Did YOU cause the oil spill?
3. This cake is someone's personal "artistic" (read the term loosely, as it is used loosely)expression of a current event, and probably came out of frustration, as well.
Freedom of expression is GOOD.
Cake is good...usually ;)

Feeling the need to politicize every stinking thing is CRAP.
(I'd even say "crude," but that could be seen as INSENSITIVE...)

Anonymouse can go get a sign and protest/boycott the bakery that made this thing if it'll make him/her feel better.
Sometimes a wack job is just a wack job.

=^e.e^=

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

Rob the W, the cake was found in the Breaux Mart on Magazine Street in New Orleans. A friend of mine took that picture. And yeah, it's a crazy thing to put on a cake, but we are feeling pretty helpless down here in the face of the oil disaster. Since the events of August 2005, satire - even crudely done satire - is something of a survival tool.

My advice? If you serve up the cake, get everyone to donate to the Greater N.O. Foundation's Gulf Oil Spill Fund, to Second Harvest Food Bank in New Orleans, which is supplying the fishermen and women on the southeast Louisiana coast with food, as they are now out of jobs, and to Gulf Aid. Look 'em up.

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLeigh C.

Is that Jell-O? What makes it look so, uh, gelatinous?

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAngela

The oil company had exhausted all current options and has begun collecting bags of hair to try and sop up the spill. I know, because my shop is doing it.

We're dog groomers. xD

Anyone who says this is attacking BP needs to read a little more. They caused an enormous oil spill, and they're response was first "let's poke some more holes!" and then "let'sdrop a big bubble over it!" and now it's kind of "...-shrug-"

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTaylor

I wrote a comment in which I pulled comments from people and criticized their views. I also included links to back up my statements. For some reason, the comment thingy isn't letting me send it (error messages), so the jist of what I was going to say is:

-I have commented once on this blog (yesterday, actually, I believe), but I find it necessary to comment again mainly because I work in politics and deal with this crap everyday so it's unfortunate to see a website like Cake Wrecks, that I read everyday and enjoy, start walking down a fine line of controversial and politically motivated issues.

- This was an unfortunate accident, though BP isn't the only one to blame. In fact, offshore drilling is statistically safer than say carrying oil in big container ships that crash. The federal government was slow to respond (no surprise) and there wasn't enough resources to back up the plans in place (shocker).

- Also, I notice those calling out anonymous commenters only post their first name. LOL. I will not take more time to explain the idiocy.

- John, I love this blog and have read it for at least a year now, but I'm tired of the "Oh the trolls" mantra. I used to feel for you, now I'm just irritated. I agree with your assumptions in the first paragraph. I don't think Anonymous wanted to hurt you, I choose to believe he was like me, and would hate to see this blog turn into a political forum for any side of the aisle which is why I'm taking time out of my day to respond.

- This blog has gotten political before, and for someone like me who works in politics it sucks to see something that could turn to the political road, which this could.

- The ad isn't really all that ironic when you take into consideration word recognition technology.

- Commenters are already starting to taking about (paraphrasing) "that one politcal party that supports oil spills" LOL The links I have for you.

- And whoever said tl;dr, please. tl;dr your way through life, my dear. Ignorance is bliss. Nothing to see here, move on.

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLulzy Nicci

Lulzy Nicci,

I'm sorry you feel this cake is political. I was not aware that any political party was pro oil spill. It is a cake that is relevant, everywhere on the internet today, and frankly, in poor taste which makes it a wreck. Cakes are for celebration and there is clearly nothing to celebrate here.

I'm sorry that you were offended.

john

ps. Just so we're clear, I called no one a troll today. Not even those with whom I disagree. Good day.

John (and Jen),

I wasn't going to comment on this one, but reading others' comments I feel the need to leap into the fray.

(a) I love your site, and am very thankful to my friend who recently introduced me to it. I've been doing my best to pass the word on to others with a sense of humour!

(b) I think you guys handled the post perfectly-- the title and humour were clear that you weren't commenting on the disaster, the companies, action/non-action, etc. You were mocking a very poorly-done (lumpy icing!) cake that uses unappealing icing (black), is "anatomically" incorrect (no beach), may (or may not) be pointing the finger at the right firm, and appears to be celebrating a disaster. And you did it with your usually pun-erific style.

(c) To those trying to debate this: we don't have enough information yet to properly judge ANYTHING. Wait until it's over, the investigation and analysis are complete, reports are published, and you've read those reports. During a natural disaster, health emergency, war, etc, there's always conflicting evidence, incomplete information, etc. Sometimes those you thought behaved well turn out to have handled things badly, and those you thought didn't do enough (or do it right) weren't so bad after all. I don't know the oil industry at all-- but after SARS, H1N1, and other public health emergencies, I know very well how this applies. Wait until all the info's in until you pass judgment. I know that's an anathema in today's "why let a fact rule a perfectly good opinion"/"make the decision NOW!" culture, but it's key if we want to ensure that something like this never happens again.

[Feel free to keep this as private support, if you want to keep the discussion about cake rather than inappropriate debates. Or publish it if you want the debaters to see that many readers want to encourage your mocking of all things cake].

WV: nutarin. Don't let nutarin interfere with our mockery of poorly conceptualized and/or executed cakes!!

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAliza

That's SO weird that someone made an oil spill cake! I guess Hallmark will have to follow suit with an oil spill greeting card now.

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

My WV is wrequath, as in, "What kind of wrequath we here?"

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Hm.

Knickers=twisted?

Cool down, ma babies. Only a joke.

Oil is fantastic and I appreciate it...in cars. Not in the gulf. Sardonic cake is both a wreck and observant of this.

What? Joke too crude? Looking for more premium humor? Obviously you were lead to the wrong place. You think you could rig up an entry more relevant and less offensive? Maybe I'm a dipstick for saying all of this, but though I see the need to burn off some frustration at sarcastic cakes and commentary certainly there's no need for such fuming.

I didn't mean to barge in, but we all tank with someone sometimes, Jen (John and #1). It's okay, you guys always make the grade with me. I'm pretty low maintenance that way.

(yes, the last one was a bit of a stretch)

disclaimer: The comment herein was not designed to be taken in any seriousness. In case seriousness is taken please refer to bottle of pills labeled "chill." In case seriousness is taken of this disclaimer please relent reading of comment immediately. ...too late, it's over. ...maybe I shoulda put that at the beginning...

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterE.M. Green

Maybe the cake isn't criticizing BP at all. Maybe it is sincerely thanking them for putting up that yellow boom, which has clearly stopped the oil from drifting into the sea grass bed and that lovely white beach. I little plastic boat will be along in a minute to skim up the oil ;-)

Oh. Good. Grief. People, this is Jen & John's blog. They can put anything on it that they want to. I've seen some really gross cakes (did you see the Nurse day cakes?) that made me wish I hadn't looked. I've seen some of the prettiest cakes ever on Sunday Sweets. And I've seen cakes that I thought were in bad taste (i.e. yesterday's insult cakes). I still come here every day to see what new & strange cakes have been submitted. If you don't like what you see, it's like your TV. Turn it off. Or not. It's your choice, but give Jen & John a break. They do a WONDERFUL job here, and will continue to whether YOU in particular come around or not!
{Deep breath...} Sorry for the rant, but I've read this all day & can't believe how petty some people get. The middle school called, they want their drama back!

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKay

P.S. I'm REALLY looking forward to the Sunday Sweets this weekend. I'd be LOST without my daily dose of Cake Wrecks. ;)

WV: carre - Your loyal fans carre a lot about you, Jen & John!

The cheese stands alone, in this entry: way to 'refine' your point by only posting one cake (?)

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

If you get offended on a CAKE BLOG, I think you qualify as a Human Wreck. This is not the place to spew out political rants.

Anyway, the cake itself is OK until you get to the bottom part. Anyone that thinks black slimy icing belongs on a cake, no matter what the message is, should be forced to eat what they're frosting.

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBree

Have you heard the latest news? The oil spill has spread all the way to Epcot.

WV- Stanint: All this talk about oil and politics, I can't stanint any more.

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJaime

Wow, maybe this silly little CAKE should be on all of Sunday morning's Important Topics of the Week shows. Or on Frontline. Or even 60 Minutes.
Yeah-that's it! 60 Minutes! But only if Andy Rooney gets to do it.

=^@.@^=

Does this mean you'll have to start prefacing your all of stuff with something like this:

RATED C
...for cake and commentary. View at your own risk.

??????????? =^e.e^= ????????????

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

Hey, sendingtheclowns, what kind of English is this:

"your all of stuff with something like this" ?

Geez, I'd say that sounds dyslexic, but it might offend someone. Like a dyslexic in an spill oil.

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

I actually daresay I admire the baker. For all that I wouldn't touch the cake, I'm pretty sure the wreckiness is intentional. I... like it?

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMiriam

Alas, those who decorate cakes do, those who don't, must analyze and sometimes criticize.

The next time someone says: "Let them eat cake" in response to an ecological disaster or revolution .... hopefully there is some black shiny icing available because it really does look appropriately disgusting.

wv: makeye

He stood in the corner trying not to makeye with the compelling, yet disgusting, piece of social commentary formerly known as cake.

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCake as Commentary

I'm from Louisiana, and I live in Southern Louisiana.

This kind of thing is what you can expect from us coona**es. When things get really bad, we don't cry, we make fun of it.

I think this cake is brilliant and you can bet this will be a highly copied cake in Louisiana.

And yes, yes, those of us in the petroleum industry or with relations in the petroleum industry DO blame BP - we know what their safety and QA practices are like and have been like. There's drilling for oil and then there's drilling for oil SAFELY.

Insinuiating that we're all to blame because we all use petroleum products is like saying that we're all to blame for a drunk driver killing someone because we all drive cars.

Okay, okay, rant off. Just saying, that in Louisiana at least, we know how to make (and take) a joke!

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I can't believe that people somehow think that because of one post Jen is going to start posting tons of political commentary. Yes, I can just see it, anti-Bush and anti-Obama cakes, every day! It's only logical that after this one, single post, they go full-time into political postings, just to piss people off! We should post here to warn them against it! John and Jen, this blog is about CAKES!!!! I mean, I know this post was about a cake, but remember, stick it to cakes, but if a cake possibly makes a statement besides "I look like poo," it's bad and shouldn't be posted! I would hate to log onto this site one day and see a cake that doesn't look like a giant turd, after all.

May 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLindsey

I had no idea that the oil spill was a political controversy! Are there certain right wing groups who think we should have more oil spills?
