What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: More Potter!

Once a week here on Cake Wrecks we post the best of the best of the best cakes out there. And most of the time, the comments go a little something like this:

"Oooooohh pretty!"

Last week, however, sparked a debate rarely seen in these parts, and instead of comments we got seven page dissertations on popular 20th century children's literature and its effect on modern culture and resulting religious, racial and socioeconomic implications. And guess who had to moderate all those comments? That's right: me.

Every.

Last.

Word.

So this week, we're going to look at some more Potter sweets, but we're gonna do it a bit differently. This week we're gonna look at the pretty pictures, and when we're done, we're gonna do our comments Twitter style, meaning 140 letters or less. Capisce? Everybody with me? Okay then. Here goes.

(Made by Yulia)

Ooooh, pretty.

(Made by WhiplashGirlchild)

Lookit the potion bottle! Cool!

(Made by Courtney Clark of Cake Nouveau)

Game of Quidditch, anyone?

(Made by Pricilla from Pricilla's Cottage)

Bernard, you lucky bum.

(Made by Chotda)

This is a Mandrake, and I'm pretty sure the pot is cake, too.

(Made by Springlakecakes)

It must have been deeply satisfying to take a bite out of the Monster Book of Monsters.

(Made by Britta)

It lights up! Like magic!

(Made by Deanna's Aunt Despina and found here)

Awww. Hedwig's looking charmingly chubby here.

And that wraps up our Potter Sweets - hope you all enjoyed!

As always, if you'd like to nominate a Sweet you can send it to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.

I'm curious about something...
Since the concept and execution of theme cakes is so widespread and popular, why aren't people/ businesses/whatever using the ideas in other food venues?
The possibilities could be mind-boggling!
Imagine:
Theme salads, or individual vegetables or fruits--genetically engineered to look like a popular cult figures...
Theme cuts of meat...
Theme cheeses...
The medium is the message, you know.
=^uu^=

WV: "ershi"--raw chocolate, wrapped in seaweed

Some people just need to get a life. I love the Potter cakes! We faithfully read you website everyday and just love it!

These cakes are all awesome! I wish I had the talent/imagination to make something like these!

WV is "ingestsl" I would like to ingest a slice of that Hedwig cake.

Harry's birthday is the 31st. Do we get more?:)

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Cooool! Looks like several someones have been working magic in the kitchen. ;)

Random Factoid of the Day: Male snowy owls are the all-white ones, not the females. Females have black oval-shaped spots on their feathers. Seeing as Hedwig is portrayed as an all-white female, I can only conclude Hedwig suffers from gender confusion. ;D

Janine, Janine! I so totally agree!

And Narnia cakes? Does such an animal exist? Books are awesome, any books, but I've been a CoN fan since back in the 70s. My dog is named Lucy. I didn't care for Susan all that much.

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterholly

Those are very cool! Still loving this theme ^-^

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEkio Locatiare

Donna said at 9:36 am what I was going to say now. And Twitter-style, I think I still have some letters lef

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEm

Wow that mandrake one really has that "That's a CAKE?!? Serious??" aspect to it.

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterXyie Fourseasons

This post made me read over the last Sunday Sweets posts for my amusement. Like so many other people, the mandrake is definitely my fave!

Someone mentioned Narnia cakes... I must agree, it would be great to see some (wrecky or not!).

wv: 'forma' -What a drunk wonder twin might say: "Wonder twin powersh, avictate! Forma... Gorilla!"

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMiniKat

Oh my gosh, I can't get over how adorable that little owl is on the first cake! I want it! These are so amazing - I think I like them better than last week's!

And a Rita Skeeter cake is an AWESOME idea! Or even better, how about an Umbridge cake! :p

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Didn't think you could top the "all Was Well" cake from last week, but that Mandrake cake is close! Squee!

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

I'm not personally a HP fan, but whatever floats your boat. The cakes are really cool, though - very well done!

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMamaOnABudget

I love love LOVE the house scarf on the Hedgwig cake! =D

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMelissa (& Billy)

I love that second cake.

The snitch is perfect, the potion bottle is so cool and it definitely looks like the book pages are fondant free (at least the top book sure does)!

WV: trimi - what you say to your hairdresser. "Just trimi."

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterbpddjeoomon

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnnie

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJohn and Sarah Sperry

I still say the Sorting Hat cake blows me away! And yes, I know it's not the same Sorting Hat cake. I'm partial.

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterun-bride

Oooooh...pretty! Add me to the mandrake cake fans!

And please, please, please do a post on Terry Prachett cakes!

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAlohaAroha

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTina

I like the first cake and specially the castle cake. So amazing, does it really light up?!

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSummer

Not a fan of Harry Potter, but those cakes are awesome creations, they're great.

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLorri Speirs

@ Send In the Clowns

That was irony, commenting on all the witless remarks made over the last few weeks about racism and witchcraft. I've made a couple of similar postings - see the Disney character thresd - showing that, if done correctly, it is possible to register offence at practically anything. Its a comment on how small minded some people seem to be and not meant to be taken literally.

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCapability Bowes

Awesome cakes... Esp the mandrake. :D

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered Commentersally

I adore Harry Potter, so to see it in any form [ESPECIALLY done well] is always exciting. These cakes are amazing, as are John and Jen (loved your responses last week :) )

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

I love these cakes! And the last ones too! My fav is the book with the glasses and Hogwarts scarf on it.

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNichole Loves Cake

It's not easy being a nerd. The Golden Snitch is my favorite but the first thing I thought (after "oooh preeetty!" of course) was "Hey! Snitches are gold balls with silver wings!"

The movies make the same mistake so I guess I'll just have to deal :)

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCookieput

I'm totally fascinated by teh light up cake. I wish I could see that one in person more than any of the others

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTrevor

You know, this weekend Sponge Bob Square Pants turned 10. Why on Earth give us more Harry Potter when there are probably some great Sponge Bob cakes out there? The ball feels missed.

GREAT CAKES! Still, my favorite Harry Potter cake on this blog to date was the Wizard's Chess cake. Wish there was a Tonks and Lupin cake..."

OMG!!! My idea for my wedding cake!!!Tonks and Lupin as the bride and Groom!!! Genius!

and these cakes....*runs around screaming* They are Awesome!!! Mandrake and the snitch!!!! the cakes captured my heart!! (and fed my already obsessive HP heart)

Ps: sorry for too much exclamation marks...

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPlue_plue

The mandrake is amazing!

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMercy's Maid

Harry Potter rocks, in a social, political, and religious sense :) I heart these cakes.

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRenny

All of the cakes are loooovely. I would second Anonymous- are there Discworld cakes out there?

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMorgan

I wasn't going to say anything, was just going to admire from afar...but oh, the monster book!! THE MONSTER BOOK! LOVE!

@ Capability Bowes

the thing about irony is that it has to be obvious to work - when you make a joke but forget to indicate that you are joking then you are the one being offensive.

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered Commenteroffended by C B

Nice HP cakes! I think it would've been kind of funny if there was a picture of a blank cake board and the baker said it was a cake of the invisibility cloak. Haha!

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMikkiMouse

Missed the fun yesterday!

Incredible cakes!

Still depriving my children of the sublime euphoria of Harry Potter.

WV: Ovessess. I think some people get too ovessessed with HP.

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterVillageMom

These cakes are awesome! I love the snitch and the mandrake best. And last week? The sorting hat cake, hands down.

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKelley

Oooh pretty!

I've loved your Sunday Sweets: Potter posts - you pretty much rock this blog.

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

1st Anon - There's a great http://homepages.tesco.net/~janefisk/discworld/discworld.htm" rel="nofollow"> discworld cake here.

I love the Monster Book cake especially.

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMarjorie

Those are just lovely, amazing works of art.

And yeah, we need an Alan Rickman cake. I would lick it endlessly and with great gusto. And no regret.

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSiressYorkie

I'd have so much trouble eating them. Then again, I'd have trouble eating many on this site, for other reasons.

Ver = anglin
I'm anglin' to keep MY cakes outta the gallery o' horrors!

@ Capability Blows,
Hey, *I* get that you were being facetious; it's your "small-minded" folks who likely don't appreciate the fun of it all.
What's a person to do? You can please some of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time. The first and last actually mean the same thing, but there it is. C'est la vie.

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

Hedwig appears to be channeling Molly Weasly there with her plump sternness :)
Beautiful and Brilliant, though I am still petitioning for HP wrecks!

July 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterChristina

For a second I thought the quittich ball was the Golden Uterus Award.
