What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha Haa!

Ho ho, heehee, haha, they're coming to take me away!!!

I'm not sure what these things are supposed to be, but they've been popping up at bakeries all across the U.S. lately. Could the carrot jockeys have some competition on their hands?

"Soon, your race of sugar-craving giant sloths shall be OURS. Thaaat's right, we're cute, aren't we? You want to take us hooome, and show us all your financial staaaatements."

These guys are going less for "cute" and more for "mortal terror":

"The claaaaaw! The claw will choose who will go, who will stay, and who will have his or her face rearranged."

Look, they even have a naval division:

"We're Popped-Eyes, the sailor blobs,
We're Popped-Eyes, the sailor blobs,
You won't want to finish,
'Cuz we taste like spinach,
We're Popped-Eyes the sailor blobs!"

Nancy H., Bridget D., Siiri L. & Heather K., I'll be happy to see those nice young men in their clean white coats. Really.

(Now we get to find out which of you were around in the 60s. Let the age-determining comments begin!)

UPDATE: The general consensus seems to be these are "frog cakes". More info here.

UPDATE UPDATE: No, they're not supposed to be Bob from Monsters vs Aliens. What, you think I would miss a kids' movie tie-in? Give me a little credit, eh?

I think thay are to represent the aliens from the new "Monsters and Aliens" movie.

@sending the clowns - so many of these comments have cracked me up, but yours especially. You come back now, y'hear?

I wasn't around in the sixties either but I love that song...

Where life is beautiful all the time...

March 19, 2009 | Unregistered Commentersharkiepatronus

MEEP!

March 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterFleetingeyes

I think they're adorable! I wish they had their demented cuteness grace my local baker's!

March 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPirka

They look so forlorn gazing up into the sky in their great numbers, while firmly wedged in their cupcake papers, whatever they are. "Eat us, eat us", they cry. "Are we not cakes?"

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJo-Anne

Definately a failed attempt at Frog Cakes. They are somewhat iconic over in S. Aus....

Althought I don't understand why anyone would make them look like that! No one ever stuffs them up here, they can't be that hard.

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAllylicious

they are from that animated monster movie

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Whatever they are, they're not actually that Bob character everyone else is mentioning, unless they're wrecky-Bobs... Bob has one eye. And no sailor hat that I know of, lol...

WV: depil... When are the men in white coats going to give me depil?

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLeanne

FROGS are not pink, blue, red, or purple. and last I checked, they had LEGS. I agree with Jen. these are just blobs coming to take us away or force us to eat spinach ;-)

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterErin

Well, I wasn't around in the 60's, but there is a relatively recent cover of the song, done by a band called Neuroticfish. Guess I must be the only EBM kid here, lol. Here's a link to listen to it (complete with video clips from Silence of The Lambs). Enjoy!

The second pic look like those creatures on a box of Nerds candy! I love your blog-it rocks!

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterShan31772

Okay, child of the 80s, had a few 60s/late 50s classics passed onto me, but I still am not sure of the "song" everyone is talking about.

Is the Purple People Eater one?

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered Commentertresjolie9

*laughs* I grew up on that song! My dad had the 45, and I remember flipping it over just to listen to the funky backward version!

My brother, former sister-in-law, and myself did it at karaoke a year and a half ago. Heh!

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDlinthe

The ones in the second one are a little known KGB torture technique. I want to stand in front of them and yell "STOP I will tell you want you want to hear just stop staring at my forehead!!!" and then I want to punish them for making me feel like I need to pluck my eyebrows by eating their googly eyes off their freaking faces while yelling "Now What are you staring at BIAYCH!!!! My forehead is of a normal proportion with the rest of my head!!!!"

Whew! Damn KGB. I have already said too much.

BTW. I love that song, I am an early 80's child, but my mom played that song and I used to think it was talking about my crazy family and I also wanted to grow up to be one of the basketweavers that sit and smile.

I guess these are a kind of cakey Rohrshach test: I thought the first batch looked like the aftermath of that safe-sex demo that is a new requirement in wreckerator school: "carefully slide the condom over the..." Yikes!

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterValerie

This is the funniest thing I have ever seen.

Question is, where do I buy a blob-shaped mold to make one?

Maybe they are B.O.B's from the upcoming "Monsters Vs Aliens" movie?

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

those are indeed frog cakes and they are synonomous with adelaide. people prefer the concept of frog cakes to the taste. traditionally, they're a big blob of fondant on a cupcake covered in green fondant and they suck

RMRR said, "Yiiiiip yipyipyipyipyipyip Uhhhh-hon Uhhh-hon.

That is all."

I loved those guys! I'd laugh hysterically whenever they hid behind their chins. :oD

These are very much like the (apparently very unfamous) 'frog cakes' that a bakery in South Australia makes. Everyone here in Australia would know that. Frogcakes.

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

They're supposed to be one of the characters from the new Monsters vs. Aliens movie- that big monster who is a blue blob!

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I grew up in South Australia and indeed ate many a frog cake. They were incredibly solid and sugary. And very consistent in appearance... unlike the wreck blobs in this post.

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Loved the "claw" reference. Hilarious!!!

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I'm guessing that they are related to the "Aliens vs Monsters" Movie coming out soon. The blue ones look like a creature named Bob.

theyre frog cakes!!! people have wedding cakes made from them in Adelaide, Australia - my mum always wanted 1 of her girls to have them as a wedding cake!!! (people do it)
they have the fake cream stuff in them too

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

They could be from the Monster Vs. Alien movie that's comin out next week! Hard to tell though.

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRachel

The creatures in the bottom picture are characters from Webkinz, an online game for kids. I think they're called Zackys or Zingos or something...I've got no clue what in the world the top ones are...?

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

A bakery near me used to make cone-shaped "goblins" that my mom would get us every year for Halloween when I was little. They were very tasty, but upon reflection, seemed like cupcakes with TONS of icing.

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterm.e.

Sadly I would still eat them. :)LOL

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered Commentertwinklescrapbooks

Nope, not frogs, Monsters vs Aliens cakes.

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLisa

I used to work in the bakery of a local supermarket chain, and we would make these froggie cupcakes every year for Easter (Don't ask my why Easter). We used blue and brown M&M's for eyes.
Once we messed one up really bad, so we gave it red eyes and rolled it a joint. His name was Doobie Frog and he lived in my freezer for three years.

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterchelsea

Jen,

I'm pretty sure the one with the sailor hat is supposed to be "Quack" from "Peep and the big wide world" a cartoon on TLC.

Or it could be a science experiment gone horribly horribly wrong.

Looks like someone has already mentioned this, but I just wanted to agree, these have got to have been inspired by our South Australian frog cakes! I love them, so sickly sweet and full of thick cream! You have to check out the wiki page about them, you will see what we mean!

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterapparentlyjessy

I immediately thought of Larry the Cucumber from VeggieTales. There is one song that they sing, called "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything". VeggieTales is cute, these are not. Yikes!

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTeresa

I think those are the blob guy, Bob, from the new "Monsters vs Aliens" movie. Seriously--look...

Dr. Demento. That's all I have to say. :)

March 21, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLoth

I remember being creeped out by that song too. And does anyone else remember that the flip side (OK, how many of you are old enough to *remember* records and flip sides....) was backwards?

My first thought on seeing the cupcake blobs was "Wow, it's
http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schlock_Mercenary/" REL="nofollow">Schlock!" Which, considering how often his appearance is compared to poo, is not a good thing....

March 21, 2009 | Unregistered Commentercygirlkat

When I was a kid I always got a frog cake after visiting the dentist. The real (Australian) ones are made with a sort-of hard sponge, artificial cream, and a sweeter-than-usual fondant. I sometimes see them here in Gelson's bakeries.

March 21, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermog78

has to post cuz wv is liper...a viper that has lost it's teeth

still wants cake. saw nic ccc today...cc around the edge, centre was flat with three disney princesses...was cute..but I was enamoured with cheesecake so I didn't take a pic. Besides, was a ccc.

March 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHyena Overlord

I was just gonna say, as soon as I saw those, I knew they were Frog Cakes. I lived in Adelaide, South Australia for the last year, and I'd never seen them anywhere else. I tried one, they're not too bad, but the cake is a bit too dry for my taste. I was disappointed that it wasn't icing inside, just cream. :( But yeah, how cool to see that just after getting back to Canada! :)

March 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSara

omg my dad used to play that song in the car when i was a kid. "i'm in love with a little red tricycle..."

for the record, i was born in 74!

March 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKaren Sugarpants

Those green ones sure could be put to work in a Mucinex-D commercial...

Okay, the second photo of multi-colored blobs are clearly Boobahs, as seen on PBS in the past. They come in 5 colors: blue, pink, purple, yellow and orange. (Yes I have too much time on my hands, I work for PBS)

March 23, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

The red, blue and purple ones look like the little guys from Nerds candy. If that's what they are supposed to be, then I like them...if not, definitely wrecktastic.

March 23, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEric

I've seen these things for year. I live in NYC and there is an Italian bakery nearby and I remember walking by growing up wondering what the frig those are. I believe they are marzipan, in NYC at least.

March 23, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAC

what are the green things supposed to be?The Society to Save Endangered Species was formed by Fred Smilek and two of his colleagues; Charlie Mack & Jonathan Korny. Fred Smilek stays active in raising awareness for this cause. [www.fredjsmilek.com]

I'm voting that they're a contemporary representation of Flubber.

March 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJoy

I wasn't around in the 60s, I'm a 90s child. But I know the song well =D
They're coming to take me away haha, they're coming to take me away haha, heehee, hoho, to the funny farm, where life is beautiful all the time, and I'll be happy to see those nice young men in their clean white coats and they're coming to take me away hahaa!

March 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLacy

They are most definitely trying to imitate the Spongmonkeys (you know...from the Quiznos commercials a few years ago). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZrks-BPeLQ

Oh...and I didn't know that was really song. I thought it was something my mom made up many years ago...oh my.
