The Problem With Phone Orders
January 23, 2009 [answering phone] "Cakey Cake Bakery, Jill speaking! How can I help you?"
"Hi, I need to order a cake for my boss. We have a photo of him playing golf that we'd like to put on it, though - can you do that?"
"Of course! Just bring the photo in on a USB drive and we'll print it out here."
"Great, I'll bring it by this afternoon."
Later...
"Hey, Jill, what am I putting on this cake?"
"Oh, check the counter; I left the jump drive out for you there."
[calling from the back room] "Really? This is what they want on the cake?"
"Yeah, the customer just brought it in."
"Okey dokey!"
Believe it or not, this is a TRUE story: Elisabeth R. worked at the office in question. Besides, how could I ever make up something this good?

Okay, so... I used to work as a packager/cleanup crew for a chain store bakery. Our store didn't have a photo cake machine and I had no clue about photo cakes at all. I took an order for a photo cake thinking there'd be outlining and detailing just like the USB cake. Luckily the decorator set things straight before feelings were hurt and lawsuits threatened.
...it may be the geek in me speaking, but I would *LOVE* a cake with a USB flash drive on it. I may request one the next time I have a cake-worthy occasion.
Even if it was a mistake, that cake is AWESOME.

Reminds me of a woman I knew who called a bakery and ordered a "scroll cake" for her son's Bar Mitzvah. She got a sheet cake with a very large picture of a squirrel on it.
At least there weren't any quotation marks!

All I can say is, it's a good thing she's good at decorating cakes. Otherwise, I fear she would be unemployed! :D

I'm not surprised at all. That actually makes MORE sense than when I handed a stack of CDs to the guys in my office's copy center, asked them to print all the files... and got back 7 pages with photocopies of the physical disks on them.

This one had me roaring with laughter for a good fifteen minutes! (I just found your blog, and am in LOVE!) A whole different interpretation to "drive".
I am rather amazed that a bakery that can do photos would have staff that didn't know about flash drives (or equivalent), but I'm assuming the staff specialize-- the person who hand-decorated the cake did do a good job copying the drive-- and so perhaps the decorator in question was a bit old-school.
And I do know quite a few techies who'd love appropriately decorated cakes, so anything's possible.
PS I'd definitely have paid for the cake-- it was sooooo worth it for the laughs. (Most of the bosses I've had would have been distraught at the idea of missing out on a cake like this!)

I actually have one of those jump drives(it's a camera memory stick reader, not a regular flash drive), and the cake is quite accurate, non-centered text and all.
As long as the boss has a sense of humor... ;)

The baker wasn't ENTIRELY blind.... He did ask if the customer REALLY wanted a flash drive on his cake. And plus, it is a very accurate USB. Although mine are more blue.

I quite like the flash drive cake as an idea for a cake. But in this instance it hasn't really worked! If one eats it, will it improve one's memory?

The only possible, conceivable way in which this could be any more epic (and literal) would be if the wreckorator had ceased to draw anything at all and instead simply centered the actual, physical USB.
To be honest, I half-expected the baker to put the ACTUAL flashdrive sticking out of the cake. This is fairly better (at least for Elizabeth! LOL)
what's funny now is how ancient that flash drive is.
I actually quite like the cake! I really would pay for a thumb drive cake. Heck, I'd pay for a thumb drive, period! LOL
That is the biggest jump drive I've ever seen.

I looked...and then I looked more closely...and then it took me twice as long as usual to scroll through and read the comments, because I was laughing so hard and so helplessly that my hand was shaking and my eyes were only half-open...
