What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

The Presidential Sweet

This is a day for the history books, folks! Yep, that's right: today I opened a fresh tin of Godiva dark-chocolate-covered pretzels, and only ate two. I know: impressive, right?

Oh, and Barack Obama is being inaugurated as President of the United States. That, too.

Naturally, I want to join in all the patriotic fervor the best way I know how, so allow me to dredge up a mistake from the not-so-distant past:

Ta-da!

This election-night Wreck's irony is twofold: 1) it's from a bakery in Chicago, and 2) the wreckerator responsible made a point of telling Chelsea M. what a big Obama supporter she was.

[looking at cake again] Yeeaah. Kinda makes you wonder what it would have looked like if she didn't like him.

Of course, bakeries across Washington and the U.S. are pulling out all the stops in honor of today's festivities, so we have more current Wrecks, too. Here's one Greg P. spied:

"Change we can belive in!"

And another from Meghan G.:

Feeling a little seasick, Mr. President? Or perhaps you've spied my Godiva pretzels and are simply green with envy? [waggling eyebrows]

Some places are doing a better job, though: here's what the posh Willard Room Restaurant in D.C. has on display:

[tilting head] Huh. You know, Zach S., from where I sit it looks like the White House is leaning a little to the left.

[cymbal crash]

Thank you, thank you. I'll be here all week.

Oh, and here's a great example of American ingenuity: this is what Cate E. came up with when she needed to sell an overstock of Yule Log cakes left over from the holidays:

Obama logs! Or as she dubbed them, "Presidential InLOGuration Cakes". Heheheh.

And lastly, I'll leave you with Sierra Rein's find:

First thought: "Wow! So pretty!"

Second thought: "Whoah, is he... I mean, does it look like...Uhh...Yeah, maybe I better zoom in..."

"Oh, phew! Never mind!"

3rd thought: "Why am I suddenly reminded of Howdy Doody?"

4th thought: "Sheesh, this is a long post. I think I need a few more Godiva pretzels now." [wanders off in search of sweets]

...."You know, Zach S., from where I sit it looks like the White House is leaning a little to the left..."

-hehehe! You're correct.
Let's hope he brings about change in education (or not, for the sake of "Cake Wrecks"!

He's totally heil-ing Hitler in that one.....awww.

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJamie E

Well, now that President Omaba has made his speech about change we can belive in, I guess he has the right to sit on a cake and, um, er ... right.

The White House does look as if it's leaning to the left *wink* but that bobblehead creeps me out because until I enlarged the picture, I thought it looked like OJ Simpson. *shudder*

I sincerely hope better cakes are served at all the inaugural festivities.

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterScritzy

An Obama log, like a Lincoln log? That's taking it just a bit far...

And that last cake, it kinda looks like a 'hail' instead of a wave....

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterYa Chun

Yay for Obmoa hehehehe. Apparently he's your KKth president. (I say "your" cause I'm an Aussie.) Oh and watch out for those Michael Jackson moves.

WV: micsi - try not to micsi up the letters next time

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterWolvie Girl

UM.....yeahhhhh

that last one would be beautiful except for Mr. Pres.

Maybe he's thinking of Inauguration Night in the White House...

/wrong i know...

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterlittle gator

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I love your awesomely perverted mind, Beckster!

WV: moerwar Let's just not even go there.

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterThe Wacky Conservative

Is Obama in the last one giving the Nazi salute???

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMariam67

Those cakes are incredible. I'm a HUGE cake fan and that is why I cannot bake them here in the house as I know I would finish the entire thing in one day and my thighs have told me No way!

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterbernthis

Don't forget this one - http://wonkette.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/obama_cake.jpg

Oh, that one actually made me jump a little when I opened the link.

On the last one...if I had a little boy in my 1st grade class in that position it would prompt the, "Hands on your desk, please!" speech all primary teachers know so well. You normally don't eat any cupcakes from that child on his birthday either.

Good Luck President Obmoa.

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterflovolgal

Time to bring back the Obama cupcake mosaic. That was great (even if the colors were a little freaky).

The last one looks like an old jewish man saluting the very last person he would ever salute .. if you know what I mean......

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

That third cake is a hot mess...we wouldn't like our President when he's angry...

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Chocolate Pretzels. Yummmmm!
Oh yeah, nice post about the cakes....
.....Only one?

Peace I'm out and hungrey

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKimmygintx

My 6yo dd wants the seasick obama cake...and my 5yo ds says "no! it's too boyish!"

my kids seem to love the wrecks, no worries about us getting one, they'd seemingly like it even better!

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterbecka

Oh my, we have elected the first green president, this is a historical day.

LOVE it that the White House is leaning left :)

Kidding aside, today was simply amazing. I can`t stop smiling.

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterfuzzandfuzzlet

The photo cake kind of looks like Obama (sorry: OBMOA) is trapped in the plastic container...trying to get out...but his hand just can't budge that darn top.

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterM. E. Lasse

I saw the last one and thought "Hi Silver, Away!"

The green one....The Incredible HulkObama.

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDonna

Congrats on your ToyFare feature! When I saw the little lingerie doll with her tiny censor bar on p.10, I was so excited that I had to rush over here and give you this air-five.

*high-five*

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMikki

White House leaning to the left! Good call, Jen. LOL

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

I wonder how Obmoa feels about the honoursome cakes

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

these are wonderful

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMad Hatter

Anon said: "Um,who is OBMOA? A Hawaiian president?????"

I'm so glad you said that. I was at a loss for words.

Up here in Canada we watched the ceremony at work. Funny, I've never watched a Canadian Prime Minister be sworn in. I think we need to up our showmanship here.

wvotd dines: So obvious I hope I don't need to provide a description of what the work means.

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHyena Overlord

I thought the last cake was in itself an pretty cake. But yeah, having a personal party and the heil Hitler was a bit unnerving!

Oh, I GET IT . . .leaning to the left. . . hee hee hee hee. . .

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Hmmm, looks like our new president is getting used to taking matters into his own hands on that last cake :)

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKate

1. That's the whitest black person i've ever seen
2. He looks like he's at a Nazi rally.

January 21, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMrs. Chaucer's Pirate

The second thought I had for the last cake was "Hale Hitler", I hope not!!

January 21, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLaufa

WOW..just wow.

January 21, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJess T

Laughing so hard at the Hilter-esque cake of Obama... wow. Seriously?

Also how did I not notice that it was Obmoa on the 1st cake? Wow. I'm almost as bad as the wrecker herself. I'll just blame it on the fact that I'm exhausted... from sleeping in due to 2 hour snow delay... Yeah... that's it...

January 21, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterT.

I thought those blue blobs with black tails in the first cake looked remarkably like sperm infiltrating egg cells.

I'm assuming the wreckerator was trying for balloons? Ick!

Best wishes to Obmoa. :)

January 21, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMeg

OK so the first cake looks like a couple of Smurf's had Diarrhea. Where they supposed to be balloons??

January 21, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGI Smith's

Yellow cake? Wouldn't marble have been more appropriate?

January 21, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCindy

Photo cake looks like Shrek's Jenny Craig after picture.

January 21, 2009 | Unregistered Commentercuriousceridwen

Yeah, I totally think the blue balloons on the Obmoa cake look like sperm. Nice.

Wow Wow Wow, holy man, look at those cakes.

January 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAsh

My husband works at the Willard. He said the cake was really quite impressive, and wasn't leaning... I think he was just indignant that it made your blog. :-)

January 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLarissa

My first thought on the last cake wreck... "Obama does a Michael Jackson dance move in celebration of inauguration!". A-hee-hee!!!

January 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTara MacDonald

Yeah, our OBMOA cake was a huge hit.
So glad y'all liked it too!
Everyone wanted to take pictures with it, so it took us forever to be allowed to cut it.

And it's not like the correct spelling of that name wasn't the most visible word in Chicago at the time, or anything...

January 23, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterChelsea

#1 Obmoa! XD

January 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNoelle

Some of these cakes are truly obamanations. I, too, saw sperm and a Nazi salute.

January 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMadeleine

That's hilarious. I actually saw that last Obama cake tonight after work. That specialty bakery is right down the block from the restaurant I work at. I also noticed it looked nothing like him. :)

February 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

That last Obama cake with him perched on top... I dunno, just the way he's sitting... kinda reminds me of Michael Jackson's crotch-grab dance move.

February 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I was in Kenya last month and was wishing I had my camera in the grocery store and had gotten pictures of the cakes for this site. All kinds of Obama cakes--and plenty that had him on it and said "Happy Birthday". They're quite proud of him there.

February 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTina Miles

Wow! That last one with the seated Michael Jackson crotch-grab combined with a Nazi Party Zeig Heil...VERY balls-y!
...sorry...
I think the cake creator is showing us a different side of Barack we never saw on the campaign trail and might never have imagined before (and hopefully never will again).
Bravo to the awesome-ness that is this fondant creation and to the boss who let it out of the kitchen for us to "enjoy"!

First off we would like to congratulate you on your fine public speaking skills. It looks like those who said the Obama Administration would strike while the iron is hot may have been correct, and the Administration may be doing it in a way that does not require them to even get a vote in Congress.

April 3, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEgy Azziera

That last pic/set is from a bakery in Bethesda, MD called Fancy Cakes By Leslie. Usually they are fantastic, but everyone was stopping and staring at that Obmoa one...
