11 Neon Cakes For Our Inner 90s Kids
March 31, 2019 If you love Lisa Frank, know what slap bracelets are, and have ever in your life worn neon paint-splattered clothing, then my friends, this is your safe space.
I'll start.
For my first day of 6th grade I wore a skirt made up of 3 ruffly layers. They were: fluorescent pink, fluorescent yellow, and a fluorescent green so bright I swear it provided its own light source.
And yet, somehow, this cake is EVEN PRETTIER:

You don't see many cakes with bright BRIGHT colors, so I'm all in on this current neon/fluorescent trend.
(Fun fact: I just fought with spellcheck for 35 seconds over how to spell "fluorescent.")

The same year I wore that neon skirt, my middle school's official colors were hot pink and teal. HOT PINK AND TEAL, you guys. Now that is the "good ol' days."

Along with that rockin' neon skirt, I also wore home-made, neon pink splattered shoes. Meaning my mom and I threw paint at a pair of knock-off Keds, because the ones I fell in love with at the local Flea Market were too expensive.
I loved those shoes, but they didn't even come CLOSE to how pretty this is:

I can't say that I was a KID in the 90s; more disco-y, but the theme-y seems dreamy! I can't even pick a favorite; maybe they could all be hung in a net from the ceiling ....and let them all drop like confetti on NEW CAKES' EVE!

90s? I recall these hideous colours being in style in the 1980s. The only cake I like in this bunch is the Russian one, with the subdued colours that look like , as you said, the Aurora Borealis. The rest are making me feel ill.

I would not have expected neon cakes to be so gorgeous!!! And I need someone to make me some sugar bubbles - I NEED to eat them! I'm a bit older than you, so my fashion memories of junior/high school are 80's nearly-neon: turquoise and hot pink! I loved my turquoise converse high-tops, even though they were without any cushioning and a pain to wear. I also made lots of Cindy Lauper-inspired skirts to go with them, and lace tops to go over tank tops...
Ohmygosh this post. It makes me want to tightly roll my jeans at the ankles, except I never quite got the hang of that.
I'm pretty sure I had that same skirt. It was pretty floofy and went well with my white shirt with matching neon decoration.
How about Hypercolor? Nothing like Hypercolor pants that made your butt glow pink (the rest of the fabric was purple).
One more...the bottom layer of that last cake, I had a pair of shoes that looked like that--black Keds with colorful little dots. I kept them in my locker at school in case I forgot sneakers on gym day. What's funny is that one of the boys usually forgot *his* shoes and would need to borrow them. This one's for you, Nick.

I wanted a tiered neon skirt like that SO MUCH! I did layers of neon T-shirts, with the cuffs rolled up so the undershirt would give a pop of contrast, and also layered slouchy socks. And the socks would have to be mismatched so the outer color on one foot was the inner color on the other foot and vice versa. And now I want to go shop for some eye-searing COLOR!
I really like the backdrop of flamingos, but wouldn't want to pick feathers out from between my teeth; and I love the glassy, bubble-baubles on the 8th (or 4th from last)....I love Sweets! You all (or Jen, today) are so awesome and it must be SO much fun to pick these every week. Looking forward to the next, and hope to see you in the wrecked week ahead.

Best/worst 90s fashion memory in the comments,huh? Okay; a looong crocheted *belt*-of sorts-that I wore with my jeans...and leather thongs that I constantly fell off of or tripped over when my feet wouldn't cooperate.
But I am not ever-EVERagain setting one foot in those wooden torture devices made of wood and leather ...supposedly wonderful and my feet hurt just thinking of them. =^-.-^=
Love them. After the winter we had here in WI, loving those bright colors! But, on the 5 year olds cake, couldnt they find room for just 2 more little rose pops? So, like, ( "like" was the insertion word in the 80s and 90s, right? LOL) 5 years old? Not the 3 they put on there. Otherwise all were so cute.
Neons definitely began their popularity in the '80s! Back then, we called them Day-Glo colors. I didn't realize at the time it's actually a trademarked brand of fluorescent pigments. I remember one of the girls in my class walking outside after school on a sunny day, wearing a Day-Glo orange sweatshirt. She dang near blinded me!
I remember neon in the 80s more than the 90s. I had a neon shirt that changed color with the temperature. I only wore it once though because it just changed around my armpits and under my bra line.

I had that skirt, too!! Though I think neon orange was swapped out for the green in mine. My elementary school colors were also hot pink and teal. The hot pink came out as red on all the stuff they made though.
On New Year's Eve, 1990, I dressed up in a white tux with top hat and came and gloves. Added hot pink cummerbund and fluorescent pink Sox! Ha!
I had a multi-coloured-paint-splattered drop-waist dress in the early 90s. My mother, with true 1960s-home-ec diligence, starched and ironed it every time I came home from boarding school. By the end of term, most of the starch would be gone and I could almost wear it comfortably. Except for the "look at me" colour scheme. The 90s were a BAD decade for introverts to dress in! My mother thought black wasn't appropriate for a child to wear, so I couldn't go goth. My grandmother gave me a neon-splattered midriff-revealing puff-sleeve crop top. Eeek! (Put it on once, took it off again, gave it to an extrovert friend.) I was so relieved when pastel and florals came back in vogue.
Aaaack!! Love this post's gorgeous cakes and especially for your memories, fellow Jen! Fun fact - as a Jennifer slightly older than you, I was always surrounded by Jens in my 80s classrooms, since so many parents used the movie Love Story to name their daughters. 😄
My fave outfit was a lace tank under a deep v-neck neon turquoise sweater with 2 wrists loaded with stretchy bracelets, finished with bright pink and white checkerboard vans! It was a LOT of look, but I loved it! 😉

Thank you for this post! I needed this...have been reminiscing lately about 90s neons, and miss the childhood days when everything was bright and colorful. Especially being an adult in the 21st century when everything, literally everything (read: cars, office color schemes, even baby items) is gray. WTH America!?
I had a red knit dress with a dropped waist and multiple rows of skirt flounce. I accessorized with a side ponytail, a barette with multiple colors of ribbon starched into corkscrew curls (remember those?) and an 'edgy' pair of earrings that looked like zipper pulls.
I remember neon in the 80's with 'jelly' shoes. I think my sister and I had them in every color!
Hot pink and teal were your school colors? All I can think is, your football team must have been awfully brave.
I was a 90s kid and the color schemes used then would make me feel uneasy... Except for the teal & pink one. I don't know why, I love this color association. So nice to see it back.
