Sunday Sweets: Pretty Little Things

They say good things come in small packages, and today we're going to see if that applies to cake.
Because I'll be honest, I have my doubts. (More cake is always better, right?)
(By Eva Salazar)
OoooOOooooh.
Ok, this is some picture perfect draping, right here. And that bow! Ah!
(By Cotton & Crumbs)
OH SNAP. A flower topper that's the same size as the cake itself?! I'm officially starting to see the appeal of smaller Sweets.
(By Lael Cakes)
Oh, and hey, at this size I don't have to share, right? [grabby hands]
I was tempted to base an entire Sweets post around this next one:
(By Freshly Squeez'd - now Letterpress Bakery)
Oh my stars!
Absolutely heavenly.
And can we talk about this redonkulously adorable unicorn?
(By Bella Baking)
Now I want to stick cute unicorn heads and pudgy little feet on every one-tier cake I see.
Now prepare for a little dose of drama:
Because sweet scrolly hearts and rippling ruffles, this is STUNNING.
Are you onboard with one-tier Sweets yet? 'Cuz if not, this little confetti-and-balloons number should convince you:
Or this whale of a cake:
(By Whipped Bakeshop)
(The little water spout!!)
There's a new small cake trend out there that emphasizes a more abstract design, usually with colorful drips, flowers, and an assortment of pretty bits and bobs scattered around, like this:
(By The Little Cake Box)
...and lemme tell you, I LOVE IT. (Check out the upside down drips!)
In fact, here's my favorite good-thing-in-a-small-package this week:
(By Slice Artisan Cakes)
SO PRETTY!
Ok, bakers, you convinced me: sometimes small cakes ARE better.
Hope the rest of you enjoyed! Happy Sunday!

OMG the whale, Alaska star cake and unicorn cake are soo amazing :D
Making pudgy little animals out of one-tier cakes is officially my favorite new cake trend. So adorable! I saw Finding Dory yesterday, so now want a one-tier cake of every character, but especially the otters. And baby Dory. All of them!
Wow... Honestly, I am blown away by the bear constellation cake. What a beautiful idea, what a beautiful cake!!!
LOVE the star one by Freshly Squeezed/Letterpress! Gorgeous! I would love to see a whole post devoted to it.
The red "sweet scrolly hearts" are faux cinnabar.
The constellation bear cake is fabulous, but ohmygod I wanna hug the whale cake!
I think one was even fondant-free! Lovely!
Has there ever been a Sunday Sweets about cupcakes? Even smaller!
all the cakes are fantastic; but the first one is stunning
I second the desire to see a post devoted to the amazingness that is the constellation bear cake by Freshly Squeez'd/Letterpress Bakery. So stunning! And those adorable one tier animals (unicorn and whale) are so simple and yet so incredible!
No unattributed cakes this Sunday! I'll have to do my own chores instead.
These are all awesome. I do wonder if the cute little unicorn has a tail too!
Love ALL of these! The bear constellation and the first one are favorites.
How I love Sunday Sweets. Don't get me wrong - the disasters, especially those that involve baker's not understanding what part of the instructions actually go on the cake, are hilarious. But these pretty cakes make my heart sing.
I'm late to the party today but definitely in the "bear constellation" group-FABULOUS. (I assisted a caterer many years ago. I saw many dull, unimaginative cakes and a few that, while not technically wrecks, were ugly. Harsh but true. The most charming cakes were at a small Spring reception. Each table had a white on white cake, all buttercream, with a different flower on top. Each flower was hand-formed and almost the same diameter of the cake. Too beautiful for words to adequately describe, this was my introduction to little cakes. They can be amazing! Thanks for a brightener on a stormy Sunday.)
I love all of the cakes, and all for different reasons. If they wanted to nake a stuffed animal in the same dimensions as that whale cake, I'd buy it.
The idea of that bear constellation cake is so simple, yet so beautifully executed.
Lovely cakes, as always. :)
Jen- I hope it's okay to share this here, but I've basically been binge watching Indie films on Netflix all day... Have you seen Time Lapse or Timer? They are both very good! Time Lapse is a darker, suspense/thriller, while Timer is a romantic comedy, but both have a twist of sci-fi/"What would happen if...?" thrown in for good measure, and are well written, acted, & executed. I was secretly hoping the Sunday Sweets theme would be clocks, timers, time travel, etc, so I'd have a reason to bring up the movies! Oh, well... I couldn't resist mentioning them even though they were off topic!! Hope everyone has a great week!
That Ursa Major cake is officially my new favorite Sunday sweet. I'm in love!
The bear constellation cake is hands down my favorite. But the whale cake isn't too far behind!
The bear cake with Ursa Major and Ursa Minor on it is the kind of cake I wish someone would order me for my birthday. Stunning!
The only correct comment about the unicorn cake is "It's so fluffy, I'm gonna die!"
I also favor the constellation cake; it's amusing, elegant, shows great technique and it's deep blue, But even if these were all in a "small cakes" category to vote for, really, you'd have to have subcategories by style. And then there'd be ten winners here. A wishy-washy way to do things, but all are deserving.
Ahhhh, I needed these to restore my faith in cake decorators. Now ready for more wrecks!
I've gotta say that of all things, I admire the RESTRAINT shown in the first cake. It was perfection ... couldn't have added one more detail or taken one off.
I love the constellation cake by Letterpress Bakery. And now I want to know why Letterpress Bakery is called 'Letterpress Bakery', since my husband and I do some letterpress printing.
So So stunning!! I could never actually cut or eat them!
personally I love love love the one with the figs! Those figs are perfect! I can taste them just by looking at them. the Whale cake is great too. well all of them are it is Sunday's post after all. BUT those figs! WOW!
I wanna know what the rainbow fudge is on that last cake. No that's not a Ned Flanders style swear ;-D Look... there appears to be rainbow fudge mixed in with the macarons.
I don't like it. It reminds me of headache-inducing soap like Lush sells, or a craft a child makes by melting all their old broken crayons together.
Maybe if I knew it was delicious I would like it better. Any theories? Likely just white chocolate and dye huh?
Wouldn't you just be thrilled to have that second one as a wedding cake? I love the hand painted detail on it, and the flower makes it perfect. It would have to be for a small wedding obviously.
I'm quite liking the figs too.
That widdle whale!! I just want to hug it and kiss it and squeeze it!! (Yes, I realize that would ruin it. I said I want to, not that I would.)
These are so sweet, but I must admit that I had a passing thought that the last one was something closer to the wreck side. (ducking now). The previous cake was gorgeous in its simplicity, so the final one seemed overdone and a little sloppy. The individual elements might have worked, but together they formed a little mess. (sorry).
The playful cakes are all wonderful. Along with your other commenter, I want a stuffed animal form of the whale. So cute!
