What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets Gets On The Map

Whether you're a bona fide globe trotter or just dream of visiting parts unknown, nothing says romance and adventure quite like travel.

(By Cakes 2 Cupcakes)

So it's no wonder you see everything from wedding to baby shower cakes featuring luggage, passports, globes - even adorable map pinwheels:

(By Plum Tree Cakes)

SO SWEET.

Here's an elegant nautical take:

(By Gateaux Inc)

And now a little of everything!

(Also by Gateaux)

The handpainted map really makes this compass cake:

(By The Sugar Studio)

With so many vintage styles out there, it's fun to see this quirky modern design:

(By Beau Petit Cupcakes)

And don't you just love those colors?

Here's the cutest little aviator:

(By Little Lady Baker)

The plane! The clouds! That perfect globe! So good.

This subtle wedding style has just the right touch of glam:

(By Alma Pasteles)

And my personal favorite:

(By The People's Cake)

Those birds of paradise flowers are perfect. PERFECT, I say.

And finally, a wedding masterpiece of vintage sweetness, pastel romance, and hot air balloony, globe-y goodness:

(By Roses and Bows Bakery)

Right? GLOBE-Y GOODNESS.

Happy Sunday, everyone!

I love the edible passports on cake #4! What a great detail.

I love all of these, but I have to admit that I do not like the top layer of the "quirky modern" one. The design overall is very cool, but with the clean lines, that top layer just looks sloppy and unfinished. I assume that it was supposed to be done that way, but for me, I think it ruins the whole look.

D'awww so cute love it :D the second one is my favorite :D

Love this theme! Cake number 4 is by Gateaux, Inc. :)

Oh, I love vintage maps! These are gorgeous. Thank you so much for sharing them!

The planking detail under under that second cake is very reminiscent of old sailing ship decks....

I could wax eloquent about a lot of details, but are the maps all printed edible wraps? how... bland.

Loving the little Fokker on the first one.

September 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterBrendan

I'm mad for the suitcases in #4 (now identified as created by Gateaux, Inc.).

The little aviator (or aviatrix <g>) is darling! (and I'm not just saying so because I am one ... OK, maybe I am saying so because I am one ... LOL).

And for the one time that I'd advocate for a cake decoration to NOT be edible--I sure hope that little Fokker is a model that Hunter can have as a keepsake.

Overall, what a feast for the eyes!

Oh my gosh, these are stunning. I must admit I'm completely taken by the map pinwheels ... Love the soft colors of the maps on that cake! Also love the nautical maps cake and the bird of paradise cake. So original and completely unexpected.

Awww...lookit! How cute! Is that a fighter plane of the Imperial WWI German Luftstreitkraefte on cake #1? What a creative way of making areal combat and World War I carnage look adorable, sweet, and harmless! And maybe little Hunter will grow up believing it.

(Just in case people can't tell, I'm being sarcastic. Bitterly sarcastic. Many Europeans would concur with me, by the way. Normally, I love this site, but I have little tolerance for insensitive representations of history.)

Gorgeous cakes! Shame on me for looking forward to the wrecked versions of each of these.

Woo! A cake I made is on Sunday sweets! I made the birds of paradise map cake while working for The People's Cake. I look at this website ALL THE TIME and am super excited to see my work!! That cake is also one of my personal favorites. Map cake for the win!

CORRECTION: obviously, I should have typed "aerial"--duh.

I love these, but it really bothers me that all the continents on the last one look right except for North America.

September 28, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterCthulhu

Great job, Jamie. The bird of paradise blossoms look just splendid. Even though I've always lived where they're common, they're still eye catching and seem exotic.

I'm with German Cake Enthusiast... the cakes are beautiful but I can't get behind the enemy aircraft on the first one. I guess now that all the American vets from that war are dead now it's OK? I don't think so.

The compass cake would have been truly awesome if the compass itself was handpainted and not an edible print.

What's wrong with the ASSMAN?

September 28, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterTed

I say this every Sunday and it's true once again! All through the week I laugh with the wrecky cakes. On Sundays I just say wow, look at that, wowie wow! My question this week with every picture has been, "Is that really CAKE!?" These are all wonderful! As usual - wowie wow! I enjoy Sunday Sweets so much! Thank you, Jen and John thoJ!
