What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets Goes Under The Sea

Today Sunday Sweets really takes a dive...

(By Shani's Sweet Creations)

...into undersea sweetness!

Yep, we're going to celebrate all things beneath the waves, like colorful coral and friendly octopodes:

(By Jacqueline Marie's Custom Cakes)

Enormous hump-backed blue whales:

(By Ron Ben-Israel Cakes)

And a little of everything, like in this gorgeous hand-painted vignette:

(By My Sweet Cosette)

Wow.

Prefer something more cartoony and cute? GOT IT:

(By Fantasticakes Cecile Crabot)

Is it wrong to admit that *I* want this cake? Or at least all the googly-eyed creatures? SO CUTE.

Ooh, now check out this stylin' modern design:

(By Planet Cake)

That trail of bubbles? Genius.

Speaking of modern, I'm digging this abstract mermaid and starfish topper:

(By Gulnaz Mitchell Cake Design)

It almost has a stained glass feel to it, right?

LOVE the colors in this stack of sea urchins:

(By Cakelava)

If you look closely, you can see colorful little fish near the base, too!

Of course we can't have an "Under the Sea" theme without a certain red-headed mermaid:

(By Fabricake, based on the art of Tim Shumate)

She's just a bit more grown-up in this version. ;)

I like how the art is layered to give it depth, almost like a paper-cutting.

What else do you find under the sea? Ship wrecks and pirate treasure, of course!

(By Roses & Bows Cakery)

The aging on this is beeeeeaauuutiful. The sprinkling of sand! The curled up "map!" I even like the green snaily guy.

And finally, the ultimate undersea Coral Reef cake:

(By Cakes By Kim Simons)

Complete with a swimming sea turtle topper!

There's so much to see on this one, I'm *still* finding hidden fish. And do I spy little moray eels?
Sweeeeet.

Happy Sunday, everyone!

I cannot choose a favorite. The whale, cartoony cake and mermaid cakes are good, but they are all wonderful

Well, no Spongebob Squarepants but I guess that's OK since we still got GARY! I always love undersea themes, and these cakes make my heart sing. I'll probably be humming "Octopus's Garden" all day.

It took me a couple times through before I realized that the Ron Ben-Israel cake has "MAX" written out in the sea foam- just wow-

These are all so amazing and beautiful. I would hate to have to eat one of these.
The whale cake looks like it has "Max" written in the foam?

These are all beautiful, but what makes my word-nerdy self happiest is that you used "octopodes." <3

Octopi make me cry but Octopodes bode well for us being friends forever!

Very last photo: Is that a wee baby turtle under the big one? It almost looks it (right under its neck, to the left, near the piece of purple coral)!

That first mermaid cake is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen on Sunday Sweets and that's saying a lot. The pastel colors, the feeling of motion in the kelp and the mermaid's hair, the waves at the bottom...love everything!

Did you notice the 4th cake? The supports of the cake stand were wine glasses filled with sea shells. I couldn't pick a favorite cake. As usual on Sunday, they were all fabulous. But I noticed the wine glass idea and thought that was cool.

Simply LOVE the whale cake...

That said, these are all gorgeous. I also am partial to the "stain glass mermaid", the octopus cake and the stacked sea urchins cake. The detail is amazing.

my faith in creative cake decorators has once again been restored with Sunday Sweets. when i see the cakes, it magically makes the images from the other 6 days of the week disappear! beautiful cakes (especially the ones involving turtles) today.

One of my favorite posts! I love all of the cakes, just gorgeous!

Jumping on board (or maybe overboard) with the love for "octopodes"! Hooray for proper Greek pluralizing. :-) (Also, I want the turtles. All the turtles.)

The 7th cake is based on the artwork of artist Mandie Manzano. You can find her on FB at Mandie Manzano.

Here is a link to the original art.

All of the cakes are gorgous!

These are all exquisite. I think, maybe, my favorite is Planet Cake's tower with bubbles. (Ask me again in an hour and I'll pick a different one.)

Best cake stand, however, is a no-brainer. My Sweet Cosette's use of three water goblets, filled with sea shells is brilliant!

Wow! These are all too pretty to eat! There are some talented sculptors out there

It's the treasure chest cake a wedding cake? Looks like a bride and groom skull topper. Genius!

Thank you so much for including my mermaid cake! It is an honor to be featured alongside of all these amazing cake artists. AMAZING cakes - ALL of them!

What I want to know is how Ron ben Israel keeps that whale's tail from falling over? Wonderful, wonderful, every single one of them.

Full fathom five thy father lies;
Of his bones are coral made;
Those are pearls that were his eyes:
Nothing of him that doth fade,
But doth suffer a sea-change
Into something rich and strange.
Sea-nymphs hourly ring his knell:
Ding-dong.
Hark! now I hear them—Ding-dong, bell.

All fantastic, but the coral reef cake is incredible!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the towering modern cake with the bubbles!!!! That is so simple, yet so beautiful.

The skulls cake is definitely a wedding cake. To see all of the detail, visit the Roses and Bows website. There is more detail than can be described.
