What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Friday Favs 4/10/15

Some of my favorite new submissions this week:

You'll never guess what kind of party this cake was for. NEVER.

Unless maybe you can read.

Eric A. reports that someone is taking a bite INTO crime at his local grocery store:

And I shouldn't be finding this quite so funny, should I.

(Hey, we've all been there, random drive-by cake eater. We've all been there.)

Think Big Bakery doesn't read this blog? WELL THEY DO. Proof: they've finally agreed with me that most bakers can't even pipe a simple balloon, and have started providing plastic ones instead.

But don't you worry, guys: where there's a wreckerator, there's a wreck:

"They just have to add strings," they said.
"It'll be easy," they said.
"No WAY anyone could foul that up," they said.

Now, I know that Easter has already come and gone, but... hey, actually, that's a pretty good segue for this:

WHAT.

Suzanne assures me this is exactly how her "Easter Bread" looked straight out of the package. I don't know what they were going for - besides the obvious - but it certainly rose to the occasion, no matter how you slice it. (Maybe a cross? Thor's hammer? A bug-eyed, one-eared bunny? [....and now that's ALL you see. Ha!])

Note how I resisted making any egg jokes, you guys. NOTE IT.

And finally, over on Facebook a while back I shared this fun Godzilla Princess cake that ThinkGeek posted:

Well, CW reader David got a big kick out of it, and put in a request with his friends. But then, "they went one better," he says, "and had an even awesomer one made for my birthday."

I think Dave's right, you guys; this is pretty epic:

Hee!

May your weekend be as fun as a dino in a dress, everybody.

And thanks to Bethany P., Eric A., Taryn F., Suzanne C., & David E. for the Cinderella Toy Story.

Bwahaha that last one is hysterical. That Easter bread gives new meaning to he is risen

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

I wouldn't consider the Godzilla or Dino dress cakes as wrecks....they are actually pretty stinkin cute.

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered Commentermiss_paper

New favorite greeting: May your weekend be as fun as a dino in a dress!

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterjust me

On #4 that bread looks like the perfect symbol for the Pagan Goddess Ēostre the Pagan Goddess of Reproduction and Rebirth and hence how we got the name "Easter" from.

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterBigg3469

Um, at least they got Ohio State's color right!

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterbassgirl

Oh, the dino cake! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!

Must know why the baker of the Easter bread thoughtt that the circular things on the side were necessary. And what they're supposed to be.

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterTLC

Heh. Given that Easter has its roots in springtime/fertility celebrations, that Easter Bread is actually quite appropriate. Maybe the baker who packed it is a Wiccan or other neo-Pagan?

Rex wearing Bo Peep's dress, in cake! That is perfect on so many levels! Thanks for making my day,

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterShanti

It's a Cake-Rex!

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterRobynR

Oh, TLC. You know what they were supposed to be...

On second thought, perhaps the photo is upside down and the round things are ovaries and the longish part a poor attempt at a uterus (there simply wasn't enough room on the cake board for fallopian tubes.) Either way, that's one poorly conceived staff of life.

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

The Easter bread is supposed to be in the shape of a cross! Eep.
The Lord is my shepherd... (His) rod... comfort me.
Christos Anesti!

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterKim S.

So no one heard the muncher opening the container to nibble the cake corner? Those plastic nightmares are so loud, I am surprised security wasn't called before the person finished swallowing. And it is a testament to their bakery that more of it wasn't eaten. I am just sayin'.

I was quite relieved when I scrolled to the Barney cross-dressing cake. The cropped pic on Facebook lead me to think it was another baby shower cake with a dinosaur popping out from under mom's pink dress. Say... that's an idea!! Anyone having a baby shower soon?

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterKathleen D.

I might need to be friends with Dave's friends. Epic!

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

Awwww!!! I like the dino in a dress one! That is fantastic. :)

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterKerry

I notice how usually the worst cakes are saved for last- but those dino cakes are great! Nice way to wrap up the post :)

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterakathleen

Oh, how humiliating for those last two. I have a 14" jointed Godzilla on my mantelpiece. He's fiercely naked, and I wouldn't dream of putting clothes on him, but I did wire a pink silk hydrangea to the fingers of one hand/claw. As for the "happy bread twist": eggs aren't supposed to..er.. come with those....=^-.-^=

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

Yes, Rex is definitely a step up from Godzilla! Hilarious!

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterErica

I adore the dino-princess cakes, both of them. "Nobody puts Godzilla in a dress!"

As for the Easter-bread one, all that came to mind was "huevos rauncheros".

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterGoryDetails

so the Easter bread is for Princess Lay-ah?

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterRenee

Those dinosaur princess cakes are not rex at all. I am totally ordering one for my SO's birthday next year

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMegan

Number four does look like a "A bug-eyed, one-eared bunny"

I would like to believe that bread was actually meant to be of Bongo, I really really do...but somehow I know better.

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterNerfbomb

I love that you included an awesome cake (and its inspiration) along with the wrecks today. After all, it stands to reason that at least one of your favorite submissions would be Sunday Sweets worthy. :)

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterDale

will someone please get me the dino in a dress cake for my birthday? Pretty please with sprinkles on top?

wait, sprinkles...

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterYota

I found myself curiously NEEDING Godzilla's nails to be painted pink or lavender to match the dress!
@mindy1: I'm glad I had no drink handy, that was totally a screen/ keyboard endangering comment!
@Bigg3469: Indeed, totally could have fit right into Spring fertility rituals, the name my clan uses is Ostara, but it is the same deity/ anthropomorphic representation of the rebirth that Spring brings.

Awww...I love that new Rex cake! I want one too!

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterDiana

56 years old and now, I want a dino cake for my next birthday. Thanks for promoting my inner kid!

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterNancy

The first one kinda makes me sad because the penmanship is so pretty!

And I cannot tell you how many people posted the Godzilla Princess cake to my wall. Seriously, I lost count. It was pretty awesome. And I'm pretty sure that's what I'll be having for my next birthday.

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterNagzilla

Oh I love that last cake with Rex! I so want that for my birthday now.

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSheila

@RobynR - Bwahaha.... It certainly is!! Well played. =-)

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSeabird

@RobynR you get ten points in my book for that one!

So, no one has commented on that LOVELY balloon cake yet. When I first saw it, I thought, "Hmmm....poop. No wait...it's a snail!" Wrong on both counts.

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJodi

Looks like Rex stole Bo Peep's dress!

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterLori

Pretty sure that bread is supposed to be some sort of Easter/Passover*/Ostara crossover. Pretty sure.

The hilarious thing is that Passover specifically forbids challah and all wheat products for 8 days. Except for the side rolls and the eggs and the sprinkles, the braided bread is pretty similar to a challah.

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSynnamin

I know all you who missed my Facebook comment are wondering "Which Godzilla design was used in that cake?"

It appears to be the one from Godzilla 2000/ ゴジラ ミレニアム because of the long purple dorsal spines. You're welcome.

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

That looks like a little more than a *bite* into crime; very nearly a slice of crime. Now we know why there's a half finished quart of milk in the dairy isle.

Bakeries should decide to go with free-range balloons. It would be safer for their wreck receiving customers (wreck-tomers, for short). ; - D

Too bad Rex's arms are so short. Bo Peep's staff in hand would have been that much more hilarious. I am slightly in love with that Godzilla. So. Awesome.

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJust Andrea

Cute, but shouldn't that be Buzz (Mrs. Nesbitt)?

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterDis fan

RobynR FTW!

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterKnittedbooties

On the balloon cake: Not a snail, a slug. Ugh. Love, love Rex in a dress!

April 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterNobodee Home

Love that adorable dino in a dress cake. Now I want one lol. The cake that got bitten or appears to be bitten.. who on earth would want it now? Lol the scary things people do at grocery stores.

April 11, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterArlene Marie

I had to come back for another peek at Cake-Rex...too stinkin adorable.

April 11, 2015 | Unregistered Commentermsanthrope

I foresee a dinos and monsters in dresses themed Sunday Sweets in the near future. My favorite of these two has to be the Godzilla, because his fierceness makes the princess dress all the more ridiculous.

April 11, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterCatTrampoline

Hey, that braided bread with Easter eggs baked right into it (yes, those are real Easter eggs) is actually an old European tradition from I forget exactly where. The sprinkles...not so much. (Ew.)

April 11, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJenny Islander

The Easter Bread is a tradition from the Orthodox Church - father in law is Greek Orthodox, and no, the sprinkles aren't normal.
Tomorrow is Orthodox Easter Sunday, thus, the crazy bread. Someone got the cross piece a bit low... I shared this on Facebook with a friend who got a huge kick out of the "risen" bread.
Christos Anesti is Greek for "He is risen." Alitos Anesti is basically, "Indeed, He is risen."
So has the bread, which seems to have been mixed up with a King Cake! 8)
For those of us who get both Western and Orthodox Easter, it's serious food party time.

April 11, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterKim S.

It's even more terrifying than the T. rex... the..

CAKE REX!!! >_D

April 12, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterDiane

I'm pretty sure that last cake is Edwina the Dinosaur:

April 13, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterCritter Girl

That "Easter Bread" obviously hearkens back to the origins of the holiday, when it was a pagan fertility celebration. (What could possibly be more fertility affirming than an obvious phallic symbol, other than appearing with symbols representing 'ladybits'. The name "Easter" even comes from the name of a fertility goddess, "Eostre". BTW, "Estrus" comes from the same name.

The Godzilla and T-rex cakes are just cute. Other than the subject matter being a little odd, but endearingly so, I don't think that either of those really qualifies as a wreck. They're both at least passably well executed. Given that the term "bridezilla" exists (and for good reasons), I'd be surprised if nobody has done a wedding cake along similar lines. (Wreckish or otherwise.)

April 14, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterrocketride

I love the last one! Cake Rex!
