The Far Side of the Wreck

I grew up reading The Far Side. My folks owned several of the books, and I can remember many happy nights curled up with the dry wit and bizarre observations of Mr. Gary Larson. I have no doubt this affected my own somewhat twisted sense of humor, because sometimes - usually after seeing something just a bit off - I'll hear an unmistakably Larson-esque narration start in my head.
You know, kind of like this:
Alone and outnumbered, C3pO did his best to blend in.
After a spritz of soda and a quick scrubbing, no one would ever guess at the dark events that transpired that fateful, frosting-filled night.
"So I says to him, 'Hey, Rabbit, it's my house and I'll hang a singing fish if I want to. And if you don't like his politics, find yourself another honey pot!'"
Bob surveyed his handiwork with pride. If only the Society of Delicate Penmanship and Context-Appropriate Color Coordination could see him now!
Buck couldn't help it: he laughed.
Unfortunately, the hunter's hearing turned out to be much better than his eyesight.
Thanks, Leah W., Julie B., Jaclyn B., Deborah F., & Matt W. You guys are far out.

Addition to #1; … but soon he realized 2 of the Gorillas were looking at him very strangely.
Ah, Jen, I also loved The Far Side. You've got his phrasing absolutely perfect!
You think it's easy being a vegan hunter?
One of my favorite replays. 'Cause I love Larson so much. Thank you!
This time I noticed the, "The moistest cake you've ever tasted!" sign. They take moist seriously at that bakery.
GREAT post Jen, I LOVE it when you do the Far Side of Cake...it's always a treat to see Gary Larson honored with an homage a la "wreckerator". I bet you ANYTHING if he knew he would totally laugh...
@ SuBee: ROFL!!!! THAT was priceless!
Being a huge fan of Gary Larson and the Far Side: Thank you :-)
Meanwhile, Chewbacca the ranch, I think they should call the golden-heads C2POs, because that's all there are of them. =^-.-^=
You'd think that moistness wouldn't be a selling point, given how unpopular the word "moist" is.
Those captions are so perfectly Far Side-y.
Although in fairness, cake #2 does say it's "The moistest cake you've ever tasted!" So of course there would be liquid on top.
hahahaha! Now I really want to know what happened that "fateful, frosting-filled night."
Ha ha ha :D
All the captions were hilarious! Bravo!
I love the Far Side. These Far Side posts are some of my favorite. keep them coming! they're perfect!
Pooh and Eeyore stared. Suddenly, the fish knew he was out of his depth.
Is "moistest" even a word? Shouldn't it be "most moist?"
Did u also notice some of the Chewbacca heads r upsidedown? Lol
Love love far side. One panel comics are the best Bizzaro is great too. These cakes are hilarious. Thanks for the laugh!
why are some of the "Cheweys" upside down?
Love the snarky narrative!
If you want to go way out past the Far Side, check out the British cartoonist Glen Baxter, master of the truly bizarre. I would love to see Cake Wrecks commentary in his style...though some of your entries already come pretty close.
Not only are those Gorilla heads instead of Chewbacca heads, but some of them are upside down!
Love the upside down Chewbaccas on the first one too.
Yes but why was the hunter on a skateboard?
Think Stacy should sleep with one eye open. I'm pretty sure Bob is a serial killer.
Anyone notice the random Vader in front of C-3PO? I guess Vader sort of looks like a gorilla...
His Midvale School for the Gifted diploma firmly in hand, Billy anxiously awaited the interview for the decorator position.
Loved this post! My husband graduated from high school with a girl who married Gary Larson and he showed up at their 20 year reunion. We sat at the table with them. He was actually very quiet and just kind of watched everyone the whole evening. I couldn't help but think he was gathering fodder for his next book . :-/
Today is the sweet grandbaby's 1 month birthday. I think he needs cake. Not one of these, however. They will likely make him cry.
Hey @Sharyn, is "moistest" really a word?
I love you. Buck and his laughter! and the fish - LOL!
Rabbit? That's Eeyore! He's a donkey, Rabbit is yellow.
C3PO then realized with a shock that Darth Vader was right below him!
Jen, I'm also a big fan of Gary Larson, and I greatly miss his cartoons. Love these posts (I know this one is a replay, but I'm sure we'd all enjoy a new one, too ;) )!
@Lulu: The "Midvale School" cartoon was one of my favorites, along with the Missile Factory and the Ball Bearings & Bananas Factory (look them up if you don't know what I'm talking about).
I too own several Far Side books. #4? Killed it!! Yes, we absolutely should be friends...see you in Sydney for a coffee!
Pooh was speaking to Eeyore, *about* Rabbit. Easy, Theardare. Nice kitty...
Never really got into the Far Side, personally. Don't get me wrong, I did appreciate a few of them, but to me it usually looked like he just chose stuff at random.
Gary Larson went to Washington State University, on the far side of the state (my alma mater, too). I figure all those miles and miles of wheat fields surrounding the campus contributed to his quirky sense of humor. Midvale School for the Gifted is one of my favorites, too.
Hi Josh in Champaign, I think you've misunderstood the caption under Pooh and Eeyore. Read it again and you will see that Pooh is reporting to Eeyore what he had previously said to Rabbit about having a singing fish. Rabbit does not have to be present for that conversation to take place. Of course we all know, including Jen, what Rabbit looks like.
Actuall there is another C3PO in the box, but who's counting...
Anytime two of my favorite things collide (CakeWrecks and The Far Side), I am thrilled.
Thanks for always getting it so right, Jen!
You're awesome!
You can see from Eeyore's pose how interested he is in Pooh's rant ...
The first one makes me laugh because there are 9 gorillas (2 of which are upside down), 2 C3POs, and one lonely Darth Vadar lol
Bravo, Jen! You have distilled Larson's captioning style down to its essence and have applied it to perfection! After drawing the reader in, you give them that wonderful "surprise" amusement that The Far Side always does after one mentally puts all of the weirdly shaped puzzle pieces of art and text together.
Thanks for the Far-Sided start to my day!
p.s. My hubby and I visited Lake Eola park this past weekend on a leisurely trip to the airport after a family visit on the east coast. Love that World of Beer patio view ;)
@Anne-Marie Those are some of my favorites also!
Cannot stop giggling. I love the Far Side and miss it dearly. These are hilarious.
