What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets That Defy Gravity

It's hard enough to make a gorgeous cake, but how about one that seems to float in mid-air?

(By Vicky Angel Cake Design)

What cakey voodoo is this??
Because I LIKE IT.

Yep, these frosted feats of engineering never cease to amaze me, so today, it's ALL floating voodoo Sweets, guaranteed to make your jaw drop.

(By Ponquecitos and Cakes)

A little birdy told me this is actually impossible. So 'fess up, bakers: how'd you do that?

(By Kaysie Lackey)

I know it's hard to look at anything besides that hilarious face, but check out the feet. There's only one touching the ground!

Or how about the ol' "invisible server" party trick?

(By Cake Heart)

If someone didn't startle their guests by letting go of that spatula handle with a flourish of jazz hands, then this cake was wasted. WASTED, I SAY.

Some fabulous piratey goodness:

(By Kara's Couture Cakes)

And I suppose this one isn't quite as gravity defying, but I'm including it anyway, because c'mon. It's Alice falling down the rabbit hole:

(By Fiona Black. Anyone have a website for her?)

Plus I love the upside-down cake design, the falling book pages, and the teeny room at the bottom!

But for a truly mad Wonderland cake, you can't beat this tea time treat:

(By Natalia Da Silva)

WOW.

Or how about this Beauty?

(By Truly Custom Cakery, now closed)

ALSO WOW.

This Angry Bird isn't even touching the board!

(By Pirikos)

The only support is through the slingshot!

This one looks more like an art gallery exhibit than dessert:

(By JT Cakes)

Gorgeous, and another one that had me scratching my head; still not sure how the supports on this work!

And finally, the one that made me gasp the loudest with sheer, "No, srsly, how'd they DO that?!" ness:

(By Yener's Way)

Drippy chocolate sauce has never looked more magical.

Hope you guys enjoyed today's floating fancies! Happy Sunday!

All gorgeous, but OMG those last two are amazing :O

Wow. Just when I think I can no longer be completely, mind-blowingly shocked by the ingenuity of cake artistry, this post comes along. These are amazing! Eat your heart out, David Copperfield!

Only one word for those cakes....INCREDIBLE!!!!!!

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterBigg3469

Unbelievable! Simply unbe-flippin'-lievable! Every single one of them. (I'll even forgive them for putting the finger stop on the phone upside down.)

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterLady Anne

How...? I mean.... How?
I keep telling my students that cake decorating involves chemistry, engineering, and physics but HOW do you defy the law of gravity?

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterFontLady

The last one looks like a regular cakestand that's just REALLY cleverly disguised. No less amazing, but to me that's the LEAST head-scratchy one :)

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

...how in the world...??

Amazing.

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSarabeth

Those are amazing! My son and I both gasped and said "Whoa...." at the sight of that Beauty and the Beast cake! Stunning! :)

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle

It's a simple matter of leverage/ physics/armatures. It's all completely credible...and edible, but I think that I'd wince to watch a knife approach them. They could be replicated in something permanent (such as bisque) and put on display. Maybe they have been! =^~.~^=

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

Un-freakin-believable!
The Beauty and the Beast one blows me away. The artistry and the feats of engineering in that thing!
But I have to say that my favorite cake is the Alice falling down the hole one. Even though it's not as "gravity defying" as the others. I love the unique creativity of it. It makes my book loving heart smile.

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSandy

Beautiful, but I'm suspicious of the first one--something looks like it's been photoshopped out???

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJean

I... just.. how..? Wow. Stunning cakes :-)

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterRachel CrazyMum

OMG!!! The horsie!!!!!! <3 <3 <3

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterVivs

Did these decorators spend a couple of semesters at Hogwarts learning levitation? Because that's the only thing I can think of to make these cakes work. Gorgeously awesome!

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterTLC

Even more perplexing they how they made them is how you would go about cutting and serving them.

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterParnassus

Wow - those are amazing!! My favorite is the second to last -- the squares with the tree. I mean -- I've seen cakes that are LIKE most all of the others, but I've never seen squares joined like that. How'd they DO that?? And that last one was really something, too. Thanks for sharing those -- they were fun.

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMaureen S

I can just hear it now... "After all the money your mother and I spent on your Engineering degree, you want to be a BAKER?!?" Money well spent, I'd say! ;-)

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterPam

And from a practical point of view, how the heck do you cut into those cakes without shattering them? They are mind-boggling to look at both from the standpoint of sheer artistry and the laws of physics, but I'm glad I don't have to portion them out.

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterdrgns4vr

Witchcraft. Truly amazing.

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJessica H

For all of the people wondering how the tree cake is supported: There are basically stairs beneath it! That's also the reason why the cake board extends so far to the right: so the stairs don't topple over under the weight of the cakes on the steps.

I applaud the artistic composition of the rabbit hole cake! Might not technically be floating, but the play on dimensions is marvelous!
Also the Cheshire Cat cake: pieces of the cake served on the plates as cake, so meta!

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterlcp

My first thought was of the Duke of Weasleton (that's Weselton!) crying "Sorcery!" :)

I find it ironic that gravity is having no effect on these cakes, and yet a profound one on my jaw! These are amazing!!

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJules

I know a bit of physics and I can technically tell how most of these are staying up but my mind still doesn't quite believe it... and can I say that I LOVE how little slices of the Chestershire Cat Teapot are on the saucers of two of those cups. Sunday Sweets make my week!

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered Commentermsanthrope

Great cakes. Have been following Kara and JT for a while. You can buy the tutorial to make these types of cakes on JT website. Happy cakeing!

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered Commentersuzannne

"Flourish of jazz hands" Seriously, I love your commentary. Please never stop.

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara

Just imagine the wreckitude that could happen to the last cake. In my mind, Wreckerators would have poops all over that cake.

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterTess

@Lady Anne (re: upside-down finger stop): So it is! Nice touch! (Too bad that they didn't go ahead and have the numerals in the opposite order as well!)

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

The rainbow splatter paint and pizza cakes are magnificent !!

Amazing stuff! The "impossible" telephone would have a "7" shaped wire armature attached to the base (coily for the vertical part) running up the wire and across the handpiece. It'd need some kind of support from the crosspiece though so that you didn't get a sad mess of cake falling off it.

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJames

This is my FAVORITE Sunday Sweet post! These are beautiful works of art! I really enjoyed this one! I wish you had more to put up. I can't choose which one's my favorite cake. Wow!

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterNashia

I know it is the least "gravity defying" but the Alice cake is my favorite! It is ingenious!

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterAli

Does the last cake also have a monogrammed "CE" on the base? Clever!

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterPam

I'm so in love with that race Horse cake!!!!

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterHeather M

The first cake not only defies gravity, but glows in the dark (blacklight) too. It isn't photoshopped. There are pics of it at a birthday party on the baker's FB page.

February 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMandyLyn

IF you could bring yourself to cut these, how would you do it without collapsing the whole thing? Scratching my head in awe.

February 16, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterNobodee Home

What is the point of photoshopping a cake to be able to float? Literally look at the background of the first cake between the plate and the first tier. How it's all smudged and a different color and you can't even tell what's going on with the white things coming off the plate on the right side. The cake is stunning, but what is the point of a poor photoshop job and what exactly was removed? Perhaps the things holding it up?

[Editor's note- What? I'm all about calling out photoshop but this is honestly just a poor quality photo. The cake supports are in the green splashes of icing under each cake. Any smudgyness is our fault for reducing the picture size so it will load faster. Check out the baker's site for better quality images. -john (thoJ)]

The boards at the bottom are all very heavy, I bet

February 16, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterdiddleymaz

That last one could have gone SERIOUSLY wrong in the hands of wreckreators...I saw it and had horrible flashbacks of croquembouches gone awry, or other suggestive chocolate dipped balls...heh heh, balls

February 17, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSavannah

There is a lot of very strong metal under most/all of those...

February 18, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterLisa

What's with cogsworths face?
