Sunday Sweets Hitches A Ride

Hey, Hoopy Froods! Don't look now, but it's Towel Day!!
(By CakeCentral member JenLGAJ)
But Don't Panic!
Even if you forgot your towel, we've got you covered:
(By I Dream in Icing)
So you'll be safe from any Ravenous Bugblatter Beasts of Traal.
Now, let's fire up our electronic thumb and take a spin among Douglas Adams' stars!
(By Strawberry Lane Cake Company)
We'll look for land masses with lovely, crinkly edges, and we'll never, ever use the word "Belgium."
(At least not gratuitously.)
I promise, we'll have a whale of a time!
(By Gelly's Cakes)
Um, maybe I should rephrase that...
We'll flollop, willomy and glurry on Sqornshellous Zeta with Zem,
(By Guloseimas da titia Lilly)
...and his friends Zem, Zem, Zem, Zem, Zem, and of course, Zem.
Voon!
And maybe we can figure out where all the dolphins went.
(By Crunchies & Munchies)
It's been So Long...
Let's ask the mice, or Marvin the Paranoid Android!
(By Annica's Cakes)
Heck, he has a brain the size of a planet, so he ought to be able to figure it out.
And I'm sure we'll run into Agrajag again!
(By CakeCentral Member Ladybug Lady 13)
Really sorry about that, Dude. We didn't see you.
(You remember Agrajag, right? That poor creature who is continually reincarnated and then unknowingly killed -- every time -- by Arthur Dent? Of course you do...)
We'll stop at Milliways and dish with the Dish of the Day, before sitting down to a nice meal of...
um...
(By Debbie Does Cakes)
[*Gulp*]
...salad.
(By The Sugar Syndicate)
Definitely salad.
You don't mind traveling by Chesterfield sofa, do you?
(By CakesDecor member Coocakecachoo)
Any other mode of transportation is most definitely not Krikkit.
(Extra geek cred if you get the sofa reference -- I even managed to stump Jen!)
(Shhhhhh... Don't tell her I ratted her out...)
I promise we'll get you home in time for tea.
(By Cakes by Lorinda)
Or something almost, but not quite, entirely unlike it.
And maybe some cookies.
(By Cookie Cowgirl)
Because even though the mice have assured us 42 is the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything, a couple of Sweets couldn't hurt.
Be sure to check out our Sunday Sweets Directory if you want to see which bakers in your area have been featured here on Sweets!

So cute and cheery :D
Awesome cakes and cookies! I would hate to cut any of them. If anyone does not get the sofa reference, perhaps it is because it is protected by a SEP field. Try looking at it from the corner of your eye. I still haven't learned to fly because I keep not missing the ground. Ouch!
For the first time, I didn't catch a single reference (but I guess that isn't surprising, given they were single-source). But there were some nice cakes in there...
Thank you! This totally made my day! I haven't read the 'trilogy' in years. Guess it's time to revisit since the sofa reference slipped by me!
I was going to share some Vogon poetry but since it is the third worst poetry in the universe I didn't think it was fitting for such wonderfully sweet Sweets and so I will save that for the third worst wrecks in the universe.
Loved the sofa reference!
Happy Towel Day!
@Malia: it's from "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" a wonderful and amazing book by the late, great Douglas Adams. It's very easy to read, full of nonsense and shenanigans and incredibly funny...if you like intellectual humor. It's also very British, but that makes it even better. The Brits are so much more polite than us Yanks on this side of the pond.
Sharyn, once again, you my dear have posted a winner!!! LOVE IT. By the way, are you still struggling for a rhyme to Pan-Galactic Gargleblaster? Can't help you my friend. Also, have you seen a spare Babel Fish lately? Mine squiggled out and I can't find it anywhere, and these Arcturians keep misunderstanding my request for a towel and keep trying to use me for a chair...
Got the sofa reference. Big Adams fan here and I've read all the books, not just Hitchhikers. Thanks for these sweets. They were fabulous.
The petunias made me laugh so hard! I can't believe someone ordered that cake but now that I've seen them, I want that as a birthday cake!!
So long, and thanks for all the....pics. I would have loved to see a cake of the original Marvin somewhere.
Oh how it sneaks up on you. If it's Towel Day than it's also Lilac Day! See how they rise up… (It's a Discworld reference)
Is the sofa stuck in someone's staircase?
Great post! I have my towel ready. Wasn't there something going on at the cricket grounds today??
I celebrate being 100% Adams-free.
Nice cakes, though.
Epic references, Sharyn! Well done! Let's hope that none of those beautiful cakes attempts to fly by throwing themselves at the ground, then missing.
How did they make the texture on the towel?! It's brilliant!
Makes me want a piece of fairy cake... :D
Sarah's reference: I remembered only part of the Angels Song, and checked it on Wiki:
An old army song taught to the Watchmen and revolutionaries by Dai Dickins during the Glorious Revolution. It's just a slightly bawdy marching song, not at all sad in tune or lyrics, but it often brings tough and grizzled old soldiers to tears as they are reminded of those who aren't singing it with them. Nowadays, a few bars hummed or whistled, like a sprig of lilac in your hat, can point out that you were there, you tried.
The words go like this:
All the little angels rise up, rise up.
All the little angels rise up high!
How do they rise up, rise up, rise up?
How do they rise up, rise up high?
They rise heads up, heads up, heads up, they rise heads up, heads up high!
This is repeated with hands, arms, knees, and finally arse up.
Best Sunday Sweets EVER!
I need a bowl-of-petunias cake for my birthday, now.
BB, that was exactly the sofa I was thinking of (Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency)!
And a Happy belated Glorious 24th of May (oddly enough, I'd remembered that it was the same day as Towel Day. Ah well)!
I've been a fan of Cake Wrecks for years. Thank you so much for posting my cake, and not on a weekday! I made it for my best friend's 42nd birthday (of course). Happy Towel Day!
@Janessa -- white chocolate buttercream base, with finely grated white chocolate.
But... I thought we'd get the second half of Alphabetical Sweets this week.
Dearest Sharyn,
You've made me a happy wrecky fangirl today!!! The sofa reference is +1! All we need for the finish is a wee bulldozer with a wee-er Arthur Dent lying in front of it, complete with bathrobe!!
And thanks for all the fish!
The sofa bobs through while Arthur is trying to teach Neanderthals to play Scrabble, I believe... And I once dated a guy who used "Agrajag" as a password and got REALLY annoyed at me when I knew the reference, as he then had to change it. I totally want the dolphin cake, too. :-)
THE TEAPOT CAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh it is so lovely! I want it, but I could never eat it. I would just stare it daily and sigh.
an entire hitchhikers guide to the galaxy post just made my day! and of course I got the sofa reference!
The sofa, of course, belonged to Eddy.
*awards self geek creds*
Don't mind me, just waiting for the painkillers again... A good bit of Adams is just what I need! Hoopy!
Actually, Muria & BB, there's another sofa. Not stuck in Richard's stairwell, but swooping playfully over the fields of prehistoric Islington, where Arthur Dent has just decided he will Go Mad (a very wise choice, I recommend it to anyone).
I note there are no references from Mostly Harmless. Surely there's a Perfectly Normal Beast cake out there somewhere? Or a good rendition of the King? Or, for that matter, any references to Young Zaphod Plays it Safe. mmmMMMmm, byproducts! Actually, I don't want to see byproducts of any processes near my Sweets. Even if they are perfectly safe.
I *would* like to see a cake made of layers of shoes, perhaps with the archaeologists Lintilla digging into them! (If you don't get that, I'll just say the radio play has a rather longer sequence about the Shoe Event Horizon than the book - Find. Listen. Enjoy the Weird.)
Sharyn: Do what you do. Do it well. Win awards. (I hereby award you the Rory for the Most Gratuitous Use of the Word Belgium in a Serious Sweets Post.)
So long, and thanks for all the fish:

Too bad I've already passed my 42nd birthday (I know, I don't look it, right?). I would have loved any of these sweet cakes. Sadly, most of my family (with the exception of two sisters) are not geeks, and wouldn't have gotten the references.
Thank you so much for this post. i love all CW posts, but have special place in my heart for douglas adams. i'm off to fetch my towel. so long and thanks for all the fish.
How much I love this post and those cakes! Never have I wanted to eat my towel, but that one I'd risk getting down in the mouth. LOL Great job to Jen's "other half"....I'd forgotten the sofa for a second myself. I think it's time for another re-read -- whoop! *takes towel and flies off to read again before Z blows up the Earth.
So long, and thanks for all the fish!
I'm in love with that unfortunate bowl of petunias. I think it has a heart of gold.
We just got through reading the "trilogy" to the kids!! Well okay we just wanted to read it again but letting them hear it was a plus!
And that's his sofa, is it?
I am so glad those beagles caught the Chesterfield! I LOVE these sweets!
Absolutely love "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." Fantastic post. You have a lovely gift of drawing in your readers and cake enthusiasts! Thank you for your posts and web-site. I have been a loooong time addict of daily checking in on your site since almost the carrot jockey extravaganza. :-) Thank you for your web-site, it is the bright spot in my day.
after a not so great weekend at work, I finally have a chance to hop online and see the towel day posts.. and came across this. and how awesome is this?? You have totally made my day. LOVE LOVE LOVE all the references!
I had a Hitchhiker's guide cake for my 42nd birthday (complete with large friendly letters that said Don't Panic! on the top) along with Marvin cupcakes. This year (42.2) was a TARDIS cake - still somewhat DA related ;)
Thanks again, I love this blog, especially the Sunday Sweets.
I seriously just bought this dvd today! It has been too long since I have watched it and I am happy to say that by cake #6 I had figured out your theme. Well done!
Never have I wanted to eat a towel so much!
Brilliant post, thank you. Of course all these cakes are served in the restaurant at the end of the universe....
John, just curious, but have you read all 5 books in the trilogy?
I'm in tears
Only 41 comments? That's just not right!
There, that's better :)
not to mention freedom, truth, justice, reasonably priced love and a hard boiled egg.
I applaud your theme today, but I have to shake my head in dismay that you referenced that monstrosity of a farce of a movie recently put out by Hollywood that claims allegiance to the original Hitchhiker's Guide then destroys all semblance of respect by destroying the possibility of finally finishing the story as it was originally told and loved by fans since Douglas Adams decided that he wasn't going to allow the BBC to stop him from getting Arthur's story out there. Marvin was square, not round. That little round and adorable robot may be sad, but he is no Marvin! Marvin was just as depressing to look at as to listen to, Trish will never fancy Arthur despite having had a kid with him by accident and certainly never would have given up Zaphod for Arthur. The movie should be boycotted and never spoken of in geeky circles.
Sorry, can you tell I was very disappointed in how badly they ruined any ability to finally see the last 2 segments of the book/trilogy in live action mode with the way they re-wrote the plot?
Got the sofa reference though, sorry Jen!

OMGeeeeeeeee! I love the Marvin cake! And the Cookies! Oh, I would be in Hitchhiker Heaven if I could get my hands on those awesome treats.
Dah! I love it! I have to get me those hitchhiker cookies. Nom. :)
I claim my extra geek points. There was a short period where Ford abd Arthur existed as sofas due to give Improbability Drive as it was HIGHLY improbable for them to be sentient sofas.
Pot of petunias with "Oh no, not again" ... how perfect for a birthday cake. (At my age, anyway.)
I claim my geek points. Or, rather I claimed them back on prehistoric earth by not throwing the letter Q into a privet bush. And ate a rather important piece of fairy cake.
So man wonderful references! Eeee! I just reread the whole series about three months ago, so it gave me so many happy feelings.
