Sunday Sweets: A Disney Movie Marathon
March 16, 2014 Have you guys seen that NY Times article about a family that learned to communicate with their autistic son Owen through Disney movies? If not, GO READ IT. Best thing I've seen online in ages.
And in the spirit of that sweet story, I bring you... THE SUNDAY SWEETS DISNEY MOVIE MARATHON!!
Let's kick it off with a few classics, shall we?

Cinderella's helpers really did have great taste; her original pink dress just doesn't get enough love these days, which is why I especially love this cake! The trailing "threads" and blue beads are a great touch.

Ok, I admit it: I honestly don't remember ever watching this movie. o.0 I wonder if it's on Netflix? Anyhoo, regardless, these characters look like collectible porcelain statues - and that bridge on the bottom tier? AMAZING.

At what point does your brain just short-out from the staggering amount of talent in these cakes? 'Cuz mine's long gone, and we still have four more cakes to go!
When John and I visited Disneyland, one of my favorite parts of the park was the giant whale's mouth you sail through during the Storybook Land Canal Boats. It's based on Monstro from Pinocchio, of course, but I never thought I'd see him in cake form!

The Wreck-It Ralph cake is wonderful...especially considering that there is a Wreck-It Ralph cake in the movie. I kind of expected this cake to match it identically...although I'm not complaining.
Aristocats was MY Disney Movie the one that I remember being new and not having to "take someone younger too see" so I didnt look like a baby. 1970 when I was ten years old....Its great fun and the songs are brilliant! its a sort of re-make of Lady and the Tramp but with felines...fabulous cast and such fun! The kittens are just adorable and Duchess and O'Malley are a cute couple.
I love all these cakes! And by the way, The Aristocats is on Netflix. :) The amount of talent in these cakes are astounding!
These cakes are all stunning, but it was the autism article that moved me the most. Thanks for both.
My all-time favorite is Disney's "Fantasia". The original, 1940 version. I saw it for the first time when I was about 5 or 6. Absolutely spellbinding!! I really think that seeing that movie kick-started my love of music (especially classical music). I recommend it to everyone, of any age! (A cake based on that movie would have to have LOTS of tiers!!!)

Having zero artistic talent myself, I am in awe of people who can make such masterpieces. On every cake, the thing I most admire is how they craft the faces to express such emotion. Fantastic.

My first Disney movie in the theaters was Bambi. My favorite cake in this series would be the Snow White cake, simply amazing!
I did read the article when it was in the paper. Wonderful story and now I'm waiting on the book's release to read more. These cake are amazing! Been a long time Disney fan. No way would I be able to cut into these. I also would display them under glass. :)
"The Aristocats" is one of my favorites. It IS on Netflix -- I really think you should see it.
These cakes are simply stunning - true works of art indeed.
I would like to make a suggestion to the Cakewrecks team - how about including the prices of these masterpieces? I think it would be very enlightening to your readers to see just how much money these cakes are worth.

So apparently @Sharyn isn't the only one that can get songs stuck in my head. I can tell you now that Ursula singing the Aristocats song really doesn't work. O.o
Monstro scared the bejeezus out of me when I was a kid and I can't watch Pinocchio to this day, but that cake is super adorable. But my fave has to be the Ursula cake. I'm in awe of the talent.

Ditto to Pancakes! above - I'd love to know how expensive some of these cakes are (although I realize that some are made specifically for cake shows). I attended a 2nd birthday party yesterday with an astoundingly beautiful Frozen cake, and I kept thinking what a waste to spend that kind of money on a toddler's birthday cake. Of course, I still totally appreciated the talent and skill it took to create.
It's funny you say that about Cinderella's pink dress, because my daughter LOVES it. More than the ball dress. She keeps asking me for a Cinderella doll with the pink dress, and I'm having trouble finding one.
It's hard to pick a favorite cake, but that Monstro one is so awesome.

Read this post with my 3yr old daughter who insisted that her next birthday cake be whichever cake we happened to be looking at. She especially loved the Cinderella cake, but then it's pink & she's a major girly girl ( no idea where she gets it, I refused to wear dresses past the age of 4).
I have been a huge Disney fan for as long as I can remember! I recall when "The Little Mermaid" came out it was touted it as an "instant classic". At 18 & having many Disney classics under my belt I was quite skeptical. Then I saw it. Love! I also vividly remember dragging my parents to go see "The Lion King" 'cause I didn't want to go alone. So there I was, 23, with my parents...along with a thousand little kids and their Mommy's & Daddy's and I couldn't have cared less how silly I'm sure I looked! Once that title sequence hit...amazing!
Probably can't name my favorite Disney movie, too many are wonderful in different ways. I do think "Lilo & Stitch" is underrated and never fails to make me laugh. :). I thought "Frozen" was beautiful, music & story a proud addition to the Disney family. But with a 3 yr old & a 7 yr old constantly belting out "Let It Go", this mom needs a break from it. Lol

These cakes are amazing, but I do have the sense that the Ursula cake is pretty close to having a wardrobe malfunction. She is showing quite a bit of side-"fondant."

I saw "The Aristocats" in the theater as a child. I own it today. It's the "forgotten" Disney movie that few remember. See it. You'll be glad you did.
That being said, I wasn't especially thrilled with today's theme. I love Halloween WAY more than Disney, but your posts are always great, and I love the "Sunday Sweets". As usual, "don't judge a book by it's cover". My brain had shorted-out at Raphunzel, and I scrolled the rest of the cakes slack-jawed in awe.
Please don't EVER stop.
@Tori, they're selling a singing Cinderella at the Disney Store right now that wears (an admittedly much less awesome version of) the pink dress. If a baker was able to accurately reproduce the way the cake in Wreck-It Ralph looked after Ralph smashed it, would it be both a well-done cake to be placed in the Sunday Sweets section, AND also a literal cake wreck?!
I can appreciate what has been done but anyone with any sculpting skill can easily make any one of these cakes. It should really come down to taste and more often than not these cakes taste subpar.
The Aristocats is the first movie I remember seeing (I was 3 or 4) -- I loved it so much I had a stuffed toy cat named Marie. They re-released the movie when I was in college and my mom, sister and I went and took a little girl we were babysitting -- I think she was a year old. She stopped crying and became transfixed once the jazz music began playing.
Everyone should go check out the FB page for the bakery that did the "Frozen" cake.... Pasteleria Dolci. They are out of Mexico. Their pictures of past cakes is AMAZING! So many that are true to character and theme. Possibly more "Sunday Wrecks" to come from this site.
One of the many things I love about Cakewrecks is that, unlike many blogs and forums, it is not only safe but usually wonderfully enlightening and enjoyable to follow any links or references presented, be it in the main article or the comments. I'm another Aristocats Fan. The music from that one is the Best. "Everybody Wants to be A Cat"
"We are Siamese" and "You must learn your scales and your Arpeggios" Had the album. Yup.
Cinderella cake is my fave. My heart just fell right on the floor when I looked at that one.

Coincidentally, I had "Everybody wants to be a cat" going through my head while I made breakfast this morning. It's been years since I've seen Aristocats, but I know I saw it as a kid (along with The Rescuers). I think I had the little book that came with a 45 record, too.

So many amazing cakes! I saw a Tangled cake at a toy store that I really want to send in, but I have to get pictures that do it justice! Also, it seemed like a lot of these bakeries were Italian. Do Italians have a Disney cake decorating gene?
