November 16, 2014 Last Monday was Sesame Street Day, so how about a little belated 'Street partying? Besides, the gang's all here!

When I was about 5 years old, my mother came to me and told me that there was a "new TV show for children" that was getting ready to start. She took me by the hand and sat me down in front of our old B/W TV set and I watched the very first Sesame Street ever!! It's amazing to think that 45 years have gone by already. Thanks, Jen, for posting these beautiful Sesame Street character cakes! Brings back a lot of great memories!!

So here in Utah we're all excited because Sesame Street is coming to be part of the annual Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas concert. I have no idea if the characters will sing, or narrate stories, or what (probably both), but I am so excited to see them in person! I'm secretly hoping they'll somehow figure out a way to toss "Rubber Ducky" into the mix (best song ever!).
These cakes are darling and I honestly can't choose a favorite. I want to hug them all!
So the one thing that stands out to me most is that you mentioned your age. 39? Really? I always figured you guys were both much younger than me, and now I find out John is the same age I am? Mind blown.
I love Big Bird's layered "feathers" on the last cake, too, john (thoJ)--I think they give the cake a bit of an Art Deco look! So,"Pino", huh?At least they left him his yellow eyebrows. (Now I'm wondering if the Dutch Cookie Monster is yellow...)
I remember when Sesame Street debuted. I was in kindergarten in the fall of 69, and a couple weeks away from turning 5. My mom rushed me into the house when the bus dropped me off and ushered me into the livingroom to watch this innovative new kid's show being produced by our regional PBS station, WGBH. It was the talk of the school; everyone raced home to watch it, even the teachers.

These are amazing, what a wonderful trip down memory lane. I could never imagine eating any of them though! Yes, I say that every Sunday. So, here's a dumb question, if you fell in love with some of these adorable fondant figures on a cake, is there a way to keep them? Freeze, shellac, something? Also, excellent G.I.Joe reference! :)
Love these cakes - and I'm so glad it wasn't just an Elmo fest. I want that Cookie Monster cake! Hey John, I think if you trash-talk with Oscar The Grouch it means you really get along great! Now that I think of it, I'm super impressed he can trash talk at all without swearing! Oscar win!
That blue big bird could be from big birds scene in Follow That Bird. He had the li g ht on him to make him look blue....

Man, that second one reminds me of a cake I had for my - 2nd? 3rd? - birthday, now I want to go dig through my parents' photo albums to see if I can find it. Fortunately for my childhood, there was a really great cake decorator in the next town over who left my friends and I with great memories of character cakes. :-)
I grew up watching Sesame Street, and now it's one of the only shows we let our three year old watch. I just showed him these cakes. He identified each character as I scrolled down, then told me very seriously, "I love these cakes, Mommy."

I am actually from Holland and yes big bird is blue here and called Pino.
I made a sitting Pino,just like the picture,for my daughter's 2nd birthday and she loved it and wanted to cut him and eat him straight away haha!

Pino is not the Dutch version of Big Bird, but a relative. This was demanded so upon the start here in the Netherlands by the American Sesame Street. He is a different color in every country. No, Cookie Monster is still blue. But we only see him from the original clips. Different to the U.S. Sesame Street, in the street the main characters are Tommie, a dog like puppet, Ieniemienie (ittybitty), a mouse and good friend of Tommie. Purk the piglet is one of the youngest inhabitants. I think most countries have their own muppets, and they buy to then dub some clips.
I don't watch it anymore, but it's a very popular program here. I grew up watching the Dutch and sometimes the German version.
These are all super adorable, but my favorite has to be the Cookie Monster cake with Cookie Monster eating the 1 cookie. That expression! Awwww.
I am a bit puzzled as to what the hanging things are on the rainbow cake with Elmo and Big Bird. They look a little bit wrong. Also, since the description under the cupcakes says that the marshmallows are packing peanuts, now all I see are severed muppet heads on cupcakes, ready to be sent to someone. Perhaps as a warning? Dundundunnnn.
I'm 44, am I too old to have a Cookie Monster cake for my next birthday?

So cute! I have been known to follow Cookie Monster's example myself. I also loved the G.I. Joe reference. I say that all the time and nobody ever gets it. Must be hanging with the wrong people! :)
I'm 33 and I too would love to hug Big Bird. He was my idle as a kid to see how the tall awkward character got by while being tallish and awkward. (I'm now six foot and people seem to think that's tall for a lady.)

Different countries have different characters and sometimes different names for the same characters. On South Africa's Takalani Sesame, Elmo is called Neno. When I lived there for a short while, I never could stop calling him Elmo and I really missed Big Bird and the other characters I grew up with. It was good, but just wasn't the same.
Too much Elmo, not nearly enough Grover. But still, pretty cute.
Grover was always my favourite and I'm disappointed there isn't a Grover cake. I'm glad he has a supporting role in the last cake, but c'mon: where's the Grover love???

These are fantastic. My dad worked for Wisconsin Public Radio and Television. He sat at the transmitter and made sure everything was broadcasting (this was before computers doing this). We would visit him when he was stationed at the station nearest us. So when I was in kindergarten and you have to tell your class what your parents do, I told my class that my dad got paid for watching Sesame Street.
