What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Dragon Con 2013

As you may recall from my extreme geek out earlier this week, John and I are at Dragon Con this weekend. Just think: at this very moment I could be passed out on top of a pile of Klingons, joining a conga line of kilted Storm Troopers, or even - EVEN - listening to the seventh Doctor play the spoons.

For those of you missing out on these kinds of experiences, don't fret. I am here to help. With cake.

Which is NOT a lie:

(By Cakes by Beth)

See? And isn't this just the prettiest Portal wedding cake you've ever seen?

All it needs are a bunch of potato-topped cupcakes.

John just discovered Breaking Bad about two weeks ago, and has already marathoned through three seasons of it. By my calculations, that makes me the last person left online who doesn't watch this show. But that's ok, because look at this cake RV:

(By Ava Rose Cakes)

Seriously, that is adorable. Who's a cute widdle mobile drug lab? Who is it? IT'S YOU.

Ok, now for some characters I think we can all recognize:

(Submitted by Aliza R. and made by Debbie Does Cakes)

Who else is hearing the original Mario 8-bit theme music in their head? Just me? (And how perfect is that controller?!)

And while we're having a virtual concert, let's throw in a little screechy soprano action from the original Star Trek series: "AhhhhAHHHahh-ahh-ahh-ahh-AHHHHH..." - you're singing along, right?

(Spotted via; baker unknown. Anyone recognize it?)

"Set phasers to STUNNING."

(Eh? EH?!)

Maybe you're more of a Star Wars fan, though - or just someone who appreciates cuddly little creatures who might try to kill and eat you:

(Found by Renee W., made by The Butter End)

So perfect! And I'm suddenly struck with the need to see a Fozzy Bear/Ewok mashup. "Ewoka-woka-woka!" (Why yes, it IS late and I AM a little punchy. Why do you ask?)

It seems every week here on Sweets there's at least one cake you just can't believe is cake. This week, this is that cake:

(By Antonella Di Maria Torte and Design)

You must be Joker.

We can't have Joker without Harley, though, so here's a little Harley Quinn as cute as Joker up there is creepy:

(By Rachel Manning Cakes)

That tufted quilting makes me want to poke the cake, Pillsbury-Dough-Boy style. And check out how the cake board covering looks like rumpled satin!

Now this is a brilliant Iron Man cake:

(By Brandie Lynn)

BRILLIANT, I say.

Listen!
Do you smell something?

(Photo by donnafab, made by Charm City Cakes West)

AAAA!! Totally amazing Slimer! Most Slimer cakes I see are... well, slimy, so I love that this one still looks like him without making us lose our appetite with dripping goo. Plus, DAT FACE.

Ah, but it gets better: Slimer is suspended over a trap, and both of them light up:

So. Cool.

Say, can't have a Dragon Con post without a dragon, right?

(Submitted by Chenaya and made by Mike's Amazing Cakes)

This wedding cake looks more like a porcelain sculpture! The couple loved Dungeons and Dragons, btw, which is why the dice are scattered around.

And finally, let's finish with something from another show everyone-but-me watches: Game of Thrones!

(By The Cake Mamas; Photography by Candice Benjamin Photography.
More pics of the incredible wedding here.)

'Course, I don't have to watch the show to tell you that is one GORGEOUS wedding cake. The map! The scales! The swords! And you should click the source link, too, because the bride's bouquet and floral crown are the stuff that fairy tales are made of. So pretty.

Hope you enjoyed my Dragon Con inspired Sweets, guys! And if you're here at the con, keep an eye out for me and John; we have free pins to give-away, and we love meeting you guys! (Or feel free to tweet at me if you haven't found us yet!)

I love the Star Trek cake--seeing the old time phaser really took me back--it could almost qualify as steampunk!

Loved the armor plating on the last cake!! Mad edible metal skills.

Also...
This seems like a good place to leave this.

(Warning, not only will the song be stuck in your head for hours, it WILL make you want to run right out, buy one and try it for yourself.)

Hope you are having a great time, you two!

I would like to offer my opinions on the dragon cake. One; it's GORGEOUS! And two; I believe the dragon is taking his turn at the dice. It looks like he's rolling...saving throw? or attack? (The couple looks pretty calm for an attack roll).

Happy September, everyone!

To answer your (rhetorical) question, I did hear the theme music to the original Mario Brothers game in my head when I saw the NES cake. Another great job!

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterwoodnwheel

I don't watch those shows either. LOL.

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDis Fan

My coworker is at Dragon con. The other day she was reading the list of people that were going to be there and the ONLY name I recognized was Cake Wrecks :).

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLeigh

I don't watch Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones, either! I think that makes three of us now. ;-)

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMarie

I have never seen "Breaking Bad" either, but I am addicted to GOT. Gotta see that, Jen.
Loved the cakes -- thanks!

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMaureen

i don't watch those shows either - just not my thing.. did try GoT, but not nearly as good as the book, and THAT took me a while to get into (which is saying a lot, i have a voracious appetite when it comes to books).
LOVE LOVE LOVE the dragon cake, and the Joker cake :O wow. and yes i heard the music, in fact, i STILL have the mario theme playing in my head LOL

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commentertangaloor

OMG the breaking bad cake makes meth cookers cute :D and that dragon cake and game of thrones cake are AMAZING-I love seeing talented people at work

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

There are more of us who don't watch TV! It gives me more time to waste online.

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPastrychef

I don't watch "Breaking Bad", "Game of Thrones", I was hearing Mario's theme, singing along with Star Trek, and was amazed with the dragon cake. All in all, great Sunday treats. :) Hope a grand Dragontime was had by all!!!

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterlissafaith

Ahhh, if I had known you and your hubbie were going to be at dragon-con, I would have made an effort to go this year. I quit going several years ago, well frankly, if you seen one storm trooper/Klingon/Indiana Jones/well you get the idea, but you being there would have been the highlight for me being there, kinda of like meeting Stan Lee that one year they actually allowed him to roam the Con. Have a lot of fun and enjoy our city.

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSara

I haven't watched any of Breaking Bad, either. I do watch GoT, though, because my friends all hooked me on the books. You really ought to read the books if you consider yourself a geek. You'll fall in love and ALL THE FEELS.

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJen

Yeah, these are abso-tively gorgeous.... But that Star Trek shirt is from Next Gen, with that black yoke..... So, the Next Gen guy or gal collects antique weaponry, right?

No GoT or Breaking Bad here either and I'm ok with that :)

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRobynR

I don't watch Breaking Bad either. Love me some GoT though, mostly 'cause I loved the books first (which often doesn't bode well for the TV/movie version, but this one works). Also, if I ever get married I'm ordering my dragon cake from Mike's. Because if hypothetical-groom won't let me have a dragon cake then why would I marry him? ;-)

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterL

No "Breaking Bad" or "Game of Thrones" here.

Also, one of those characters on (and in) the NES is not like the others; if you said "the Capcom character", you're absolutely right!

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNyperold

Sadly the GoT wedding was just a photo shoot to advertise what those vendors could do, but that is a crazy amazing cake.

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKris

I've never seen Breaking Bad (nor will I) or Game of Thrones either, although I might end up watching the latter at some point.
LOVE the dragon wedding cake!!

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnnette

These cakes are awesome, especially the "Dungeons and Dragons" cake. I love dragons, and I have quite a few figurines, stuffed toys, and other decorations on display in my home. I actually had dragon bride and groom toppers on my wedding cake...my mom was just slightly horrified. (And Yes I sang the Mario theme in my head, lol)

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterladiebugg

That Trek one had better be a cellular peptide cake with mint frosting.

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKirian

Never seen Breaking Bad *or* Game of Thrones, but I have read GoT up to (but not including) the last one.

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterghoti

I don't watch Breaking Bad nor Game of Thrones either and have no desire to, so you're not alone :-)

Those are some awesome cakes though...and the Portal cake will make my sweetie happy :-)

@Kirian - so so true!!!!

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnma Natsu

don't despair, Jen, I don't watch Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones either!

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSueP

I love these sweets. The Game of Thrones cake is beautiful. You know the books are always better than the show anyway. But when you get a chance you should give it a try, that is an amazing series. Just know your favorites are never safe.

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDawn

On the one hand, my inner Mr. Monk compels me to point out that the Star Trek theme with that cake should have been both TNG and TOS since the uniform is TNG while the phaser is TOS. On the other hand, great-looking cake!!! (All of them - and the GOT wedding site was gorgeous, if only an ad - what an ad!)

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMindy

Just want to let you know that I don't watch "Breaking Bad" or "Game of Thrones" either. I survived "Firefly". I can't handle another series where your favorite characters get killed off willy-nilly.

That Joker cake... My mind shuts down at the thought of cutting into it and eating a big chunk of Joker's face. I think I could eat a realistic baby cake more easily and I don't want to think to hard about why that is.

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterGinger

Sorry, as soon as I saw 'Game of Thrones' and 'wedding' in the same paragraph I collapsed sobbing on the floor. You really, really need to read the books.

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterM

These cakes are gorgeous! I don't watch Breaking Bad, but I do watch GoT - although I record it so I can skip past all the scary/gory pars.

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEmily

You are not alone. I also do not watch those shows. But I gotcha beat: I also don't watch "Walking Dead"...much to my friends' shock & dismay.
...
..
.
I'm cool in other ways.

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSpacegeek Nat

What lissafaith said. (Don't watch BB or GOT, totally sang the TOS theme - hey, do ya know the poem that goes with it?! :0, etc...

Plus kudos to Merry, Kirian, & Mindy! :-) I completely missed the crossed streams & had to go back to check! But I kinda hope it's not a cellular peptide cake - chocolate goes waaaay better with mint frosting! :-)

And a belated Happy Anniversary to ya, Jen & Jon (thoj). We're at 21 over here (Wahoo! - our cake can have alcohol now! :) Oh, and our date is 3/21 - so it was the 21st on the 21st! Really cool, huh? <crickets chirping...>

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKarateLady

I half expected that Trek cake to have Marina Sirtis' screaming head attached to it... like in that one weird episode where Data tries out dreaming and has crazy nightmares because of some alien parasite thing he senses subconsciously.

Pretty sure that messed me up some as a kid.

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterGristle McNerd

You mos def should watch BB and GoT. They are awesome. Like these cakes.

September 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCynthia

Hey, if you're too tired and shagged out from D*C, I know a Klingon that wouldn't mind if you passed out on her sometime; you're one tlhIch nob 'IH be', li'l Mama, and I'm very cushiony. <<>;)

Cheers to the fellow hardcore Trekkers who were quick enough to point out the Trek cake being both Original and Next Gen; my Vulcan would scarf that down like a wild targ, if he wasn't so allergic to dairy. And Kirian made the "peptide cake" joke before I got the chance, too!

@ladiebugg: Hooray for personalized cake toppers! My Trek wedding (which was featured here back in 5/09) had my husband dressed as a Vulcan and myself as a Klingon, so I made a special topper with re-painted action figures of Sarek and B'Etor, who had a li'l piece of my veil on her head. :)

Aside to Jen (And All Whovians); Finally saw the TV movie from '96 with the Eighth Doctor (shudder) Yeesh, that was painful to watch, and not in an "MST3K/Bad Is Good/Enjoy the DEEP HURTING" kinda way, though Sylvester was wonderful, as always (What a dumbass way to go out, no wonder SO MANY Seventh fans were mad as wet cats!), and Paul McGann was lovely, with that enigmatic smile. Getting started tomorrow on his silver brocade waistcoat for my Doctors costume. Jelly Babies are on order and on the way; hope I can make them last til the con in October!

Your Nerdpal,

Storm

September 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterStorm

I don't watch TV, so that leaves me out of the appreciation of GoT and Breaking Bad, but not from appreciating good handwork.

September 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAlison in Indiana

I'm not alone in this world! I don't watch Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones either. I thought I was the only one. But about the cakes, WOW. Pure art. Beautiful!

September 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterFernanda

Thank god I'm not the only one who was bothered by the Next Gen uniform with the original series phaser! I called my husband in to commiserate with me and he just backed away slowly shaking his head. (And he calls himself a nerd! Hmph.)

And I haven't seen Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones either.

September 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterElizabeth

The screechy sounding soprano part on Star Trek, was in fact an instrument called a Theramin, not an actual human voice - It was played by waving your hands in the air, and depending on where your hand was in relationship to the antennas determined the pitch and volume. True Story - I'm not making this up.
That being said, of course we all sang along to the unearthly sound when the theme song started playing.

September 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSnicklefritz

What's up with the gear-covered layer in the Game of Thrones cake? Are there gears in Game of Thrones? (I also do not watch it, obv.) Isn't it set in a pre-mechanical historical period?

(I also don't watch Dr. Who. Why are people so fanatical about Dr. Who??)

September 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterVelma

What I love best about you, Jen, is that a line like "Can't have the Joker without a little Harley" goes unexplained and stated as if it's an obvious truth. Which it is. You are ftw.

September 4, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterErica

I don't watch Game of Thrones either (or Breaking Bad, or much TV at all). That is hands-down my FAVORITE cake design in the past 6 months! I'm a sucker for maps and swords.

September 5, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermouse

You see cute dice; I see choking hazard.

September 5, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterkayk

those last two cakes are amazing. especially that last one.

BTW i don't watch breaking bad or game of thrones either.

September 5, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterarchersangel

Is it just me or does the harley cake look like it is for a one year old.

September 6, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKip

@Merry from Annie's Book Stop, Sharon MA

Then it must belong to DAX as she did have such a collection.

September 6, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterIsolder74

OMG I'm sad I missed you guys! Hopefully you'll be there next year and I can tell you how much I love your site in person.

September 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCricket

If they're going to have a GoT *wedding* cake, they might as well go all the way. Make it red velvet.

September 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterFantasyFan

From one jen to another, you are not alone. I watch neither Breaking Bad nor Game of Thrones. I also don't watch True Blood, another everyone watches.

September 15, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermorgannagaia

I don't understand why the Game of Thrones cake has a...a....a....penis on it.
